Exciting Milestones: From Media Features to Creative Workspace Transformations
It’s been an absolute whirlwind of activity and exciting developments around here! I’ve been bursting at the seams with news, so much so that my social media channels have been buzzing while the blog patiently awaited its update. But fear not, dear readers, I’m here to unpack all the incredible progress and share a glimpse into the ongoing journey of transforming not just a house, but a life, with creativity, grit, and a shoestring budget. So, grab your favorite beverage, because we’re about to dive deep into a series of thrilling updates that have truly set the tone for an incredible season ahead.
1. Featured on Business Insider: Our DIY Journey in the Spotlight
Two weeks ago, a truly remarkable opportunity presented itself during a lunch break that I won’t soon forget. I had the distinct pleasure of chatting with Mandi from Business Insider. To my complete surprise and utter delight, she expressed interest in interviewing me about my approach to home renovation. Specifically, she wanted to know how I manage to tackle ambitious DIY projects with a seemingly impossible combination of zero free time and a notoriously tight budget. It felt surreal to discuss the very challenges and triumphs that define this blog’s core mission – proving that beautiful, functional spaces are within reach for everyone, regardless of their financial or time constraints.
The anticipation for the article’s publication was palpable, but even I was caught off guard when it suddenly appeared last week. Seeing my name and the story of our “ugly duckling” house featured on such a prominent platform was an incredible moment of validation. It’s hard to describe the rush of emotions – from the soaring highs of “Oh my gosh, that’s really me!” to the fleeting pangs of “Hmm, someone still thinks my house is ugly” – all within a matter of minutes. But truly, the overwhelming feeling was one of immense pride and gratitude. This feature isn’t just about me; it’s a testament to the power of perseverance, creative problem-solving, and the belief that every home, no matter how humble its beginnings, has the potential to become a beautiful sanctuary. I wholeheartedly encourage you to check out the article here and see how our budget-friendly DIY philosophy resonated with a wider audience. It truly was an unbelievably cool experience!
2. Pinterest Explodes: A Community of Inspiration Takes Flight
In what felt like a parallel universe of exciting developments, my Pinterest account has experienced an astonishing surge in growth. It’s been nothing short of phenomenal, akin to watching a marshmallow expand in a microwave – only, instead of sticky sweetness, it’s a tidal wave of new followers! While the initial “bajillion” might be a slight exaggeration born of sheer excitement, the reality is equally thrilling: we’re talking hundreds of thousands of new followers, a number that continues to climb at an exhilarating pace. To be more precise, the count is rapidly approaching or has already surpassed 250,000, and it’s growing significantly every single day.
The exact reason for this sudden explosion in popularity remains a bit of a mystery to me, but the excitement is undeniable. There’s a profound sense of joy in knowing that the DIY projects, design ideas, and renovation tips I share are resonating with such a vast and vibrant community. While the immediate implications of such growth are still something I’m trying to wrap my head around, it’s incredibly validating to think that there are now so many more people who connect with the “ugly duckling” philosophy. Pinterest has always been a fantastic platform for visual inspiration, and seeing so many people engage with our content motivates me to continue creating and curating even more valuable resources. It’s a powerful reminder that every small step in a renovation journey can inspire countless others, fostering a truly global community of dreamers and doers. I’m eager to explore how this expanded reach can further empower fellow DIY enthusiasts and help more people transform their own homes into spaces they truly love.
3. The Great Office Overhaul: From Chaos to Creative Hub
Now, for a more personal, yet equally significant, achievement: I cleaned! Yes, you read that right. I finally tackled the daunting task of organizing my office space, and frankly, it feels like a monumental triumph worth celebrating. For far too long, this crucial area of my home – where so much of the blog’s creative energy is supposed to flow – resembled less of a functional workspace and more of a forgotten storage unit or, dare I say, a semi-permanent trash dump. The transformation, though still ongoing, has been incredible. It’s evolving into a semi-finished, inspiring environment where ideas can truly flourish, and projects can take shape without being buried under clutter.
This cleaning frenzy wasn’t just about tidying up; it was a strategic move to visualize the future of this space. As part of this process, I brought in key design elements to test out the aesthetics. I placed one of the chair legs and the fabric intended for the new cushions directly on top of the new rug. This allowed me to get a real feel for how the colors and textures will interact, ensuring that the overall design direction is still aligned with my vision. While I’m not entirely 100% certain of every single choice yet – the iterative nature of design often means refining as you go – I’m pressing forward with confidence. Creating an organized and visually appealing workspace is paramount for productivity and creativity, and this significant step brings me closer to having a truly dedicated and inspiring hub for all future DIY endeavors and blog content.

4. Professional Poses: Capturing New Blog Headshots
A blog is more than just words and pictures; it’s a reflection of the person behind it. And sometimes, that reflection needs a fresh update! This past weekend, I teamed up with my wonderful real-life friend, Lindsey, also known online as Redhead Baby Mama, for a much-needed blog facelift. My current sidebar photo is a relic from my college days – and while it holds a certain nostalgic charm, it’s definitely time to introduce a more current and professional representation. (Side note: my driver’s license photo from when I was 18 is surprisingly flattering, a rare feat for any ID, so I’m holding onto that one for as long as humanly possible!)
Lindsey is an absolute gem, not only because she’s the amazing mom to my favorite redhead under the age of five (over five, it’s a toss-up between her husband and the lead singer of Eve 6, for vastly different reasons, of course!), but also because she possesses an extraordinary talent for costume design and, crucially for this project, the ability to pose like a seasoned professional. I have a lot to learn in front of the camera, but her expert guidance was invaluable. She patiently helped me navigate through various expressions and postures, ensuring we captured at least one or two shots where I didn’t look perpetually hungry, adorably chipmunk-cheeked, or on the verge of a sneeze – common perils of an amateur photoshoot! The plan was to have them edited and ready for this post, but you’ll have to bear with me for just a few more days. I promise the wait will be worth it, as I’ll be sharing not only the professional shots but also some of the hilarious, “silly ones” where we might have gotten a little carried away towards the end. Get ready for some genuine laughs and a fresh new look for the blog!
Looking Ahead: Maintaining Momentum Before School & Beyond
With just a couple more weeks remaining before I head back to school, the goal is to keep this incredible momentum rolling. There are still a few more projects and updates I’m eager to complete and share before the academic year begins – and, of course, before my absolute favorite season, football, kicks off! Balancing these exciting DIY endeavors with upcoming studies will be a challenge, but one I’m determined to meet head-on. The energy from these recent successes, from the Business Insider feature to the explosive Pinterest growth, is truly infectious and fuels my drive to continue pushing creative boundaries.
So, if I seem a little distant or less responsive in the coming weeks, please know that I’m dedicating my time and energy to diligently working on new content and transformations, striving to have even more exciting reveals for you soon. Your continued support and engagement mean the world to me, and I deeply appreciate you being a part of this journey. For real-time snippets, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and updates that sometimes hit social media before they make it to the blog, please join our growing community on Facebook and Twitter. We love connecting with fellow DIY enthusiasts and sharing the daily adventures of an “ugly duckling” home. More amazing content and transformations are just around the corner, so stay tuned!
