From Drab to Dazzling: Our Entryway & Living Room Paint Transformation

For many of us, the idea of a “day off” conjures images of leisurely mornings, perhaps a good book, or pursuing a beloved hobby without the demands of work. Yet, in the bustling world of homeownership and DIY, a day off often transforms into a dedicated work session on the house itself. That’s certainly my reality! Instead of purely relaxing, I find myself diving into projects, tackling tasks that breathe new life into our home. Maybe I’ll squeeze in a quick nap or a walk with the dog, allowing myself a few precious moments for leisure reading before inevitably returning to the rewarding, albeit demanding, world of do-it-yourself endeavors. It’s a cycle familiar to many homeowners – the relentless pursuit of making a house truly feel like a home, one project at a time.

Today, with a rare “day off” on the calendar and glorious natural light flooding in, I’m seizing the opportunity to photograph a few projects I’ve been eager to share with you. Much of my DIY work happens under the cloak of night, which, while practical for getting things done, isn’t exactly ideal for capturing those stunning “before & after” moments. Dim artificial lighting simply doesn’t do justice to paint colors or the subtle nuances of a room’s atmosphere. This challenge became particularly evident when trying to showcase our entryway, living room, and hallway – spaces previously painted in a ubiquitous tan. At night, this color, once chosen for its warmth, transformed these areas into what felt like a cavernous, somewhat unwelcoming tunnel. Just take a peek down the stairs – you can almost feel the lack of light, made even more authentic by the boxes I temporarily placed to prevent our furry friend from stepping on freshly painted steps. It illustrates perfectly the kind of visual struggle we were experiencing.

The Perfect Tan That Wasn’t Quite Right

Let me be clear: I don’t inherently dislike the original paint color. In fact, it’s a truly lovely tan – perfectly balanced, without those tricky yellow or pink undertones that can make a neutral shade go awry. Many of you have even asked for its name, which, by the way, is Valspar’s Sandy Shell, color-matched at Home Depot to Behr paint. It’s a classic for a reason. However, the consistent issue, especially as evening settled, was the overwhelming darkness it cast throughout the house. The lack of ambient light, combined with the depth of the tan, created an atmosphere that, frankly, started to feel a bit eerie. It lacked the brightness and airiness I craved, suggesting that a lighter, more vibrant color would be a much better fit for the overall feel and functionality of the space.

This realization often comes with time. It’s a common piece of advice for new homeowners, and one I’ve learned to truly appreciate: live in your house for a while. Give yourself time to experience each room in different seasons, at various times of day, and under both natural and artificial light. Only then will you truly begin to understand its rhythms and what changes will genuinely enhance your living experience, saving you the headache and expense of going through four different paint shades (a mistake I’ve certainly made more than once!). This journey of discovery has led me to repaint my study-o, tackle the stairs, and now, once again, embark on painting the living room. When I first moved in, I chose an awful yellowy beige that cast a sour pallor over everything. It was a steep learning curve that eventually led me to Sandy Shell, which, while an improvement, still wasn’t the ultimate solution.

Today, my focus is shifting to a smaller nook area, a cozy corner that often goes unnoticed but holds immense potential for adding character and functionality. Of course, the immediate environment during paint prep is rarely glamorous – please excuse the dusty mess on the floor! It’s an unavoidable hazard of the trade, a temporary inconvenience on the path to lasting beauty. The meticulous preparation, from taping to patching and sanding, is crucial for achieving a flawless finish, and sometimes that means embracing a little bit of temporary chaos.

This systematic approach, tackling one area at a time, ensures that each part of the house receives the attention it deserves, contributing to a cohesive and beautiful whole. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, but every completed section brings a wave of satisfaction and renewed motivation.
