This year, I’m taking a moment to put my tools down a day early to fully immerse myself in the holiday spirit, offering a heartfelt wish for a Merry Christmas to all.
The journey of transforming a house into a cherished home is an ongoing adventure, often messy, always rewarding. As I look around, the remnants of a year’s worth of projects are still visible – a scattered tool here, a stray piece of sandpaper there. But amidst the gentle chaos, a profound sense of accomplishment settles in. The “Ugg-Duck” (my affectionate term for this evolving home) has witnessed countless hours of dedication, turning dreams into tangible spaces.
The spirit of the holidays, however, often calls for a charming blend of effort and ease. Even with projects on pause, certain festive touches have been meticulously placed. Tiny stockings, undeniably adorable, hang with care, their diminutive size a stark contrast to the colossal new smart TV now gracing the living room wall. It feels good to finally give the broken one the boot, ushering in an era of crisp visuals and seamless entertainment, just in time for holiday movie marathons.
The preparatory chores are mostly done: Mount Washmore has been conquered and neatly folded, and all gifts are wrapped and tucked away. It’s a rare moment of calm, allowing me to sink into my beloved (and inevitably dog-hair-covered) couch. A quick pat confirms Charlie, my furry companion, has certainly made himself comfortable here recently, leaving his mark. But even this small inconvenience can’t diminish the overarching feeling of gratitude.

The most important things are indeed in place: everyone is healthy and happy, and there’s a certain comfort in knowing the fridge is well-stocked. The relief of no more classes to attend and, perhaps most gloriously, no more goddamn tests, is immense. This newfound freedom not only allows for a much-needed brief rest but also opens up more time and mental space for the creative pursuits and DIY projects that fuel my passion.

Mastering tools like the router for smoothing countertop edges not only made projects more efficient but also opened up a world of possibilities for future endeavors. The confidence gained from handling these tools is immense and empowers me to tackle even more complex tasks.
A memorable visit from my uncle proved incredibly helpful, contributing to the monumental task of cleaning up the kitchen. This collaborative effort culminated in the installation of the stunning walnut butcher block countertops. Oh, the sheer beauty of them! It was a project that elicited genuine swoons and drools, instantly elevating the kitchen’s aesthetic and functionality. The rich texture and warm tones of the walnut have truly made the kitchen a showstopper.
