Mastering DIY: The Grand Finale of Our Laminate Flooring Installation Project
It’s with immense satisfaction and a collective sigh of relief that we can finally wave sayonara to the numerous boxes of laminate flooring that have been occupying our living space for weeks. The installation, a monumental undertaking that has truly transformed our home, is officially complete!
More accurately, I should say Scott is finished. This is truly a project for which I can claim absolutely no credit, as it has been all Scott from start to finish. His dedication and hard work have paid off, and I know he is incredibly relieved to see this challenging task through to completion.
The Journey of Transformation: From Piles to Perfection
Embarking on a large-scale home improvement project like flooring installation is always an adventure. It begins with meticulous planning, selecting the perfect laminate that balances aesthetics with durability, and then facing the reality of countless boxes and the intricate process of laying each plank. We chose laminate for its attractive appearance, mimicking natural wood without the higher cost and maintenance, and its relative ease of DIY installation compared to other flooring types.
Planning and Preparation: The Foundation of Success
Before a single plank was laid, there was a significant amount of preparation involved. This included clearing out furniture, ensuring the subfloor was clean, level, and dry, and allowing the laminate planks to acclimate to our home’s temperature and humidity. This crucial step prevents warping and ensures a snug, long-lasting fit. It’s these behind-the-scenes tasks that often go unnoticed but are absolutely vital for a successful outcome.
The Installation Process: A Test of Patience and Skill
The actual installation involved carefully measuring, cutting, and clicking each plank into place. Working around doorframes, tricky corners, and heating vents requires precision and patience. Scott tackled these challenges head-on, meticulously ensuring that every seam was tight and every plank was perfectly aligned. There were undoubtedly moments of frustration, as any DIYer can attest, but these were overcome with perseverance and a steady hand. The transformation of each room, piece by piece, was incredibly rewarding to watch unfold.
Managing the Remnants: From Leftovers to Leaps of Joy
Upon completion, we were left with two full, unopened boxes of laminate, which will thankfully be returned to the store. This not only saves us money but also ensures that materials are not wasted unnecessarily. However, the smaller, random excess pieces and those inevitable “oops” cuts found a more dramatic, and perhaps more satisfying, fate: the fire pit!
As you can see in the photo, Scott had a tremendous amount of fun taking out any lingering aggression on these leftovers! There’s something incredibly therapeutic about safely disposing of project scraps, especially after weeks of intensive labor. It’s a symbolic act of closure, turning waste into warmth and clearing the physical and mental clutter of a demanding project.
“It’s therapeutic, I tell ya.”
The Stunning Transformation: A Glimpse of the New Look
And just for good measure, to truly sate your curiosity, I’m excited to share a dramatic before and after comparison. While I wish I could unveil the kitchen — it looks sooo good! — it’s currently buried under a mountain of materials related to our powder room renovation, not to mention a pile of dirty dishes. So, for now, you’ll have to settle for the impressive transformation of our entryway, which truly sets the tone for the rest of the renovated space.

I know what you might be thinking: the walls look a bit warped. Rest assured, they are indeed a tad wonky, a charming quirk of an older home, but the camera tends to exaggerate it. I don’t actually live in a place designed by Willy Wonka, thankfully! The new flooring instantly modernizes the space, creating a clean, cohesive look that flows beautifully throughout the house.
The Final Touches: Beyond the Flooring Itself
With the main floor installation complete, we’re now moving onto the crucial finishing touches that truly tie the entire project together. One significant detail is the closet door on the left of the entryway. It had to be removed to ensure a seamless floor installation beneath it. While it’s off its hinges, it’s the perfect opportunity to give it a fresh coat of bright white paint, making it look crisp and “spiffy.” I’ll be using my trusty “keg” horses for this task, which always prove invaluable for painting doors and other large items.
The Importance of Shoe Molding
The final, vital step remaining is the installation of the shoe molding. This isn’t just a decorative element; it serves an important functional purpose. Shoe molding, or quarter round, covers the expansion gap left between the new flooring and the baseboards. This gap is essential for allowing the laminate to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity without buckling. Properly installed shoe molding provides a polished, professional finish, sealing the edges and completing the look of the floor.
Once the shoe molding is in place, this big, FAT project can finally be officially checked off our daunting home renovation list! The sense of accomplishment after such an extensive DIY endeavor is truly unparalleled.
The Benefits of DIY Home Improvement
Undertaking a DIY project like laminate flooring installation offers numerous advantages beyond just cost savings. It instills a deep sense of pride and accomplishment, allowing homeowners to truly personalize their space. Laminate flooring itself is an excellent choice for many reasons:
- Durability: Modern laminate is highly resistant to scratches, dents, and stains, making it ideal for busy households with pets or children.
- Aesthetics: It beautifully mimics the look of hardwood, tile, or stone, offering a wide array of styles and colors to match any decor.
- Easy Maintenance: Cleaning laminate floors is a breeze, usually requiring just a broom, vacuum, or damp mop.
- Affordability: It’s a cost-effective alternative to natural materials, providing a high-end look without the premium price tag.
- DIY Friendly: Many laminate products feature click-lock systems, making them suitable for enthusiastic DIYers to install themselves.
Beyond the material benefits, the experience of transforming your own home, learning new skills, and overcoming challenges is incredibly rewarding. It fosters a deeper connection to your living space and builds confidence for future projects.
