Navigating the Nuances of DIY Framing (and Why “Good Enough” is Often Perfect)

Bringing this beautiful print to life on our wall wasn’t without its minor challenges. I decided to use an old RIBBA frame I had on hand, which I distinctly remembered as black, only to discover it was, in fact, a very dark gray. A small detail, perhaps, but one that nudged my perfectionist tendencies! Then came the wrestling match with those notoriously stubborn frame prongs on the back. Why do they always seem to bend in the opposite direction you intend? It’s a universal DIY struggle, I think.

The original mat that came with the frame also wasn’t quite right for this print. Instead of trying to force it or buy a new one, I experimented. I simply flipped the mat over and laid the print directly on top, using the frame’s backing board. To my surprise, the grayish tone of the backing created a really interesting contrast against the print’s white edges. It wasn’t the traditional, perfectly matted look, but it was unfussy, a little bit edgy, and conveyed a sense that I had put thought into it. For now, it’s absolutely perfect. Sometimes, “good enough” truly is just right, allowing you to enjoy your new decor without getting bogged down in endless adjustments.
