Primary bedroom progress shot from a new angle

Honestly, curating and editing “reveal” photos is one of the most challenging aspects of the entire process. You pour so much effort, time, and love into reaching this point, and naturally, the number of photos you want to share feels directly proportional to the sheer amount of work it took to get here. Every angle, every detail feels crucial to conveying the journey and the current state of the space!

A Look Back: The Evolution of Our Primary Retreat

To truly appreciate how far we’ve come, let’s take a nostalgic journey back to the primary bedroom’s humble beginnings. It’s always rewarding to see the transformation from its original state, highlighting the drastic changes that have unfolded.

From Bare Bones to a Blank Canvas

When I first moved in, the room was, to put it mildly, a blank canvas with very little character. It served its purpose, but it certainly didn’t inspire. There was a lack of defined style, and it felt more like a temporary space than a true sanctuary. This initial state, while functional, laid the groundwork for the many creative ideas that would eventually blossom.

The Gray Phase: A Chapter of Neutrality

Later, I transitioned the room to gray walls. For a long time, this neutral palette was perfectly acceptable. It was calm, sophisticated in its own way, and provided a muted backdrop for daily life. However, despite its pleasantness, I never truly felt a strong motivation to fully finish the room. It lacked that spark, that personal touch that transforms a mere room into a truly cherished space. The gray served its purpose, but it didn’t ignite the passion for completion that I knew a bedroom should inspire.

A Bold New Direction: White Walls and Striking Black Trim

The turning point arrived within the last year when I made the decisive choice to completely refresh the space. I opted for crisp white walls, immediately transforming the room into a brighter, more expansive haven. To add a dramatic and sophisticated contrast, I introduced nearly-black trim. This combination has breathed new life into the room, infusing it with a modern yet timeless appeal that I’ve been craving.

I anticipate questions about the exact paint colors, so let me share the details upfront. For the striking trim, I used Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black. It’s a true, deep black that offers incredible definition without being overly stark. For the walls, the journey to finding the perfect white was an unexpected one. After testing numerous shades that developed strange undertones in this particular room’s lighting, I stumbled upon a simple white straight out of the Behr paint can. It was a complete accident, but this specific shade of white proved to be the only one that remained consistently clean and true, devoid of any unwanted color shifts. Sometimes, the best discoveries are made by chance!

A Furry Co-Star: Stella Takes the Spotlight

This time around, our beloved Stella made sure to get into the mix and claim some well-deserved spotlight. Our other furry friend, Charlie, had quite the starring role during the DIY floating platform bed plans reveal, so it was only fair that Stella had her moment to shine in these updated shots, adding her charming presence to the evolving space.

Beyond the Bedroom: An Updated Hallway Nook

The renovation isn’t confined solely to the primary bedroom; the surrounding areas, even small nooks, are also getting a thoughtful refresh. I’ve got a semi-updated hallway pic to share, showcasing a charming little vignette that adds character and balance to this transitional space. It’s often these smaller details that truly elevate the overall feel of a home.

This particular door in the hallway is slightly off-center, which can sometimes create an imbalance in the visual flow. To counteract this and add a touch of intentional design, I felt it was necessary to introduce some visual interest to the left side. I added a lovely wooden art piece that I’ve been holding onto, perfectly complementing the new aesthetic. To provide balance and a touch of organic warmth, I incorporated a beautiful hanging plant.

For those curious about the plant, it’s a vibrant Golden Pothos. This choice was deliberate, as it’s known for its hardiness and ability to thrive in various light conditions. It should be absolutely perfect for the amount of light this spot receives, especially now that the light is beautifully diffused by the new frosted window film on the adjacent window. This film allows ample natural light to filter through, illuminating the hallway without the harshness of direct sun, a vast improvement from the darker hallway of before. Fingers crossed it continues to flourish!

Future Visions: The Road Ahead for Our Bedroom Sanctuary

While this is a significant halfway point, there are still exciting plans on the horizon for the primary bedroom. You might not see it clearly in the photos, but there are subtle pencil markings on the door, outlining where I envision a beautiful mirror will hang, flanked by carefully chosen door molding. I absolutely cannot wait to get that molding tacked on and apply the final coats of paint, truly elevating the architectural details of the space.

One final picture, because I believe this one truly emphasizes the next big project: that back wall is practically begging for something spectacular! It’s currently a blank slate, but I envision it transforming into a stunning focal point. My plan is to create a captivating feature wall, likely incorporating a bold color or a unique texture to add depth and personality to the room. This will serve as the perfect backdrop for a custom-built headboard that will be both stylish and uniquely ours.

Beyond the aesthetic upgrades, functionality is also a key consideration. I’m excited to build out some integrated drawers for bedside storage, ensuring that essentials are always within easy reach while maintaining a clean, uncluttered look. To complete the bedside setup, I plan to install two elegant wall lamps. These won’t just be for aesthetics; they’ll serve a practical purpose, providing focused lighting for my cross-stitch projects, allowing me to enjoy my peaceful hobby while my partner, K, can still get a few extra winks without disturbance. More detailed updates on all these exciting elements will follow as soon as we can get them all done.

Balancing Passions: Outdoor Projects and Beyond

The arrival of spring and the official end of winter mean a shift in focus, and we’ll soon begin splitting our time once again. While the bedroom remains a priority, the longer daylight hours beckon us towards outdoor adventures and other significant projects. This means dedicating time to various outdoor projects, continuing the captivating Ruby camper renovation, and meticulously figuring out the intricate details of my garage workshop. Each of these endeavors presents its own set of challenges and rewards, contributing to the ongoing evolution of our home and lifestyle.

Sigh… it looks like my streak of unfinished projects may continue for a little while longer, but at least this current state of the primary bedroom feels like a wonderfully comfortable and functional stopping point. It’s reassuring to know that if the remaining tasks need to be broken up or paused, we have a beautiful and usable space to enjoy. And on the bright side, longer daylight hours mean more time for everything! Keep an eye out for another exciting Ruby update, coming your way next week. Until then, have a good one!
