Hello, fellow home design enthusiasts! It’s been a whirlwind of activity behind the scenes, both personally and professionally. While my colossal house-selling to-do list keeps me hopping from room to room, leaving little time for new project reveals just yet (and a much-needed birthday vacation meant a brief pause!), I have some truly exciting news that I simply couldn’t wait to share.

The moment we’ve all been anticipating has arrived: my brand new season on SheKnows TV’s Homestretch is now officially LIVE! I first teased this back in March following my last trip to Arizona, and this time, I’m committed to delivering a comprehensive recap. Expect a full behind-the-scenes look next week, alongside a retrospective on my debut as a TV designer from Season 7, to bring you fully up to speed on all the adventures.

To say I’m juggling a lot of content creation would be an understatement; I’m feeling a little behind, but the excitement for these reveals is keeping me energized!

A Glimpse into the Transformation: Season 9’s Grand Challenge

Before diving into all the detailed recaps, let me give you the essential lowdown on the incredible challenge that Season 9 presented. This project pushed creative boundaries and tested our ability to deliver maximum impact under significant constraints. Here are some of the bigger details you need to know:

The Canvas: A GIANT Living Room

Our focal point for this season was an absolutely massive living room. When I say huge, I mean it – a sprawling space that, while offering immense potential, also presented unique challenges. Large rooms can often feel cavernous and impersonal without thoughtful design. The goal was to transform this vast area into a cozy, functional, and aesthetically pleasing heart of the home, a true sanctuary for its inhabitants. Turning a blank, intimidating expanse into a warm and inviting living space with limited resources required strategic planning and a keen eye for maximizing every square inch.

The Family: Candice, Jason, and Adorable Maddox

The stars of this episode are the wonderful couple, Candice and Jason, alongside their incredibly sweet and utterly adorable baby, Maddox. Seriously, this little guy is a scene-stealer! Designing for a young family meant considering more than just aesthetics; functionality, safety, and durability were paramount. We aimed to create a space where they could relax, entertain, and most importantly, watch Maddox grow and play safely. Understanding their lifestyle and needs was the foundation of our design strategy, ensuring the makeover truly reflected their personality and supported their daily lives.

The Constraints: A Tight Budget and Even Tighter Timeline

• The budget: A mere $2,000. For a “GIANT living room,” this budget is incredibly challenging. It forces creative solutions, smart sourcing, and often, a lot of DIY elbow grease. Every dollar had to be meticulously planned and stretched to its absolute limit to achieve a dramatic transformation.
• The time limit: A staggering 2 days. This isn’t just a design challenge; it’s a logistical sprint. From planning to shopping, execution, and styling, every minute counts. The pressure is immense, but it also sparks an incredible level of efficiency and teamwork.

The Problem: A Multifaceted Design Dilemma

This living room wasn’t just large; it came with a laundry list of design hurdles:

• Massive TV and Giant Window: The presence of a huge TV coupled with an equally immense window created significant glare issues, making comfortable viewing nearly impossible during certain times of the day. Effective window treatments were essential, but they had to be functional, aesthetically pleasing, and budget-friendly.
• Pet Safety Concerns: A family dog that had previously jumped through the window posed a serious safety risk. This meant we needed a robust, yet stylish, solution to block the window effectively without compromising light or the room’s overall feel.
• Lack of Baby-Proofing: With baby Maddox starting to move around, the room wasn’t prepared for his explorations. Sharp corners, unstable furniture, and general clutter needed addressing to create a safe and nurturing environment for a crawling infant.
• Aesthetic & Functional Deficiencies: Beyond the specific safety and glare issues, the room lacked a cohesive design, clear zones for different activities, and a sense of warmth. It needed a complete overhaul to become the vibrant family hub it deserved to be.

Solving these complex issues within a tiny budget and a two-day limit was the ultimate test of creativity and resourcefulness. While the episodes offer a glimpse, my upcoming detailed recaps will dive much deeper into the behind-the-scenes strategies and ingenious solutions we employed to tackle each of these problems head-on.

The Friendly Rivalry: My Competitor, Dani Fiori

Adding another layer of excitement (and a little competitive pressure!) to this season was my talented competitor, Dani Fiori from Sweet Dani B. Now, you might be thinking, “Sweet Dani B? Isn’t that about cookies?” And you’d be right – her blog is famously known for its incredible cookie artistry. But don’t let that delightful detail fool you for a second! Dani is an absolute powerhouse in the design world. She boasts a freaking Emmy Award for her work as a set stylist on The Martha Stewart Show. This means she brings a wealth of experience in creating stunning, camera-ready spaces under tight deadlines, making her a truly formidable and inspiring opponent. The friendly competition pushed us both to deliver our absolute best, making for some truly engaging television.

The Homestretch Experience: Behind the Lens

Undertaking another room transformation in such a condensed timeframe was undeniably exhausting, but I can honestly say it was also an absolute blast! The energy on set is always electric, and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. The crew was just as amazing and supportive as they were during my first season, creating a fantastic working environment even amidst the high-pressure schedule. Their professionalism and enthusiasm are truly infectious, making the intense production schedule feel much more manageable and enjoyable.
