Life, as we all know, can throw some curveballs when you least expect them. About a year ago, Em navigated through a particularly challenging and rather unpleasant divorce. The details are, as one might imagine, far from glamorous – perhaps best described as an “emotional dumpster fire.” However, true to her resilient spirit, Em has embraced the philosophy that the best revenge is truly living well, and she is executing that mantra flawlessly. It fills my heart with immense joy to share that Em recently achieved a significant milestone: she bought her very first house! This accomplishment marks not just a new address, but a powerful new beginning, a testament to her strength, determination, and unwavering optimism.

It’s a wonderfully charming little place, brimming with potential and character, and she’s already envisioning all the ways to make it her own. Embracing this spirit of providing things that are “forgotten until desperately needed on moving day,” I wanted to go a step further for Em, especially given her status as a proud owner of multiple energetic dogs. On the day of our visit, I experienced a rare and heartwarming moment: Lemon, usually quite reserved and a bit shy, actually approached me for a quick, unsolicited cuddle before retreating to her preferred corner. It was a delightful surprise, showcasing the unique and often contrasting temperaments of these two sisters, even after all these years. Perhaps it was the excitement of their new surroundings, the fresh scents of their new backyard, or maybe, just maybe, she was truly thrilled about the thoughtful gifts for keeping her new home clean despite her muddy paws! Our canine family expanded even further on this eventful day! My mother, still grieving and ever pragmatic, was absolutely adamant: she and Dad would not adopt another pet until she officially retired. She firmly believed in dedicating full attention to a new family member. However, despite her firm declarations, I knew deep down it was only a matter of time before Em, who dedicates her time to volunteering and fostering dogs regularly, would slowly but surely wear her down. Em wasn’t even subtle about her mission; and truth be told, I wasn’t exactly trying to stop her – after all, I’m a huge dog lover myself! This quiet campaign for a new furry friend eventually paid off.
Mom is still a little shy of retirement, but when Em suggested they simply “go meet” a rescue dog named “Clyde,” it was, as they say, all over. One look at that adorable face, those innocent eyes, and their resolve melted faster than ice cream on a summer day. Adopting from a rescue center is a truly rewarding experience, giving a deserving animal a second chance at a loving home. We had a brief family debate about changing his name, as he was still very much a puppy and open to a new identity. I was strongly campaigning for Oliver or Ollie, names I thought suited his playful demeanor, but ultimately, my parents settled on the perfectly fitting name, Buddy. And “Buddy” he became, instantly fitting into their lives as if he’d always been there.
Now, my parents are completely smitten, utterly wrapped around Buddy’s little paw. It’s genuinely hilarious to witness, as they dote on him as if they’ve never owned a dog before, finding joy in every new discovery he makes. Their daily routines revolve around his needs and endearing quirks, which are plentiful for a tiny dachshund! He might be small in stature, but he certainly makes up for it with an abundance of personality and attitude. For instance, we’ve recently discovered his peculiar aversion to school buses and trailers – barking indignantly at them as they pass by with surprising conviction for such a little guy. It’s these charming little eccentricities that make him such a unique and beloved member of our family, bringing endless laughter and companionship.
As part of my gift drop-off mission to Em’s new place, I made sure to swing by my parents’ home and bestow upon Buddy a special gift of his own from Swiffer.
