Welcome back to the latest chapter in our home transformation journey! Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on a room that has, for far too long, been overlooked: the primary bedroom. But prepare yourselves, because this neglected space is finally getting the attention it deserves, starting with some exciting new additions and a clear vision for its complete metamorphosis. Get ready to dive into the initial steps of our primary bedroom redesign, where comfort meets high-contrast style!
Of all the spaces within this home, the primary bedroom has undeniably been the most deferred project. It’s a common tale in many renovation stories – the private sanctuary often takes a backseat to more public-facing areas. However, that era of neglect is officially over. We’re embarking on a significant overhaul, and I’m thrilled to share a sneak peek at our progress and the design inspirations driving this exciting transformation.

When I first purchased this house, I had grand ambitions for every room, the primary bedroom included. My initial enthusiasm led to a quick refresh – a fresh coat of gray paint, a few foundational furniture pieces – and then, as often happens in the world of DIY, life, and other urgent projects intervened. The primary bedroom became a holding pen for future dreams, a canvas left unfinished while attention shifted to more pressing, visible areas of the house. It’s a testament to how easily a personal retreat can fall down the priority list when there are so many other projects vying for time and resources.
Primary Bedroom: A Look Back at 2009
To truly appreciate where we’re going, it’s helpful to remember where we started. This image captures the primary bedroom in 2009, with its original blue walls and a rather uninspiring brown carpet. It was a blank slate, certainly, but one that lacked character and the warmth of a true sanctuary. This “before” snapshot serves as a powerful reminder of the journey we’ve undertaken and the dramatic changes yet to come.

However, with K now having officially moved in, we both recognized that this winter presents the perfect opportunity to finally dedicate some serious attention to our shared sleeping quarters. I must admit, it’s still not at the absolute top of our project list – we have other ongoing renovations, such as the guest bedroom and the Murphy bed built-ins, that demand completion first. Yet, given the significant amount of time we spend here, we both agree that creating a truly comfortable and visually appealing space that fosters relaxation after a long day is paramount. It’s about designing a retreat that genuinely serves its purpose: a haven for rest and rejuvenation.
Unveiling Our Vision: High-Contrast Black and White Bedroom Design Inspiration
Our design philosophy for the primary bedroom centers around a sophisticated high-contrast black and white palette, infused with natural textures and global influences. This approach aims to create a serene yet striking environment that feels both modern and deeply personal. We’re drawing inspiration from various sources to craft a cohesive look that marries functionality with undeniable style. The goal is to achieve a balance between minimalist aesthetics and inviting warmth, making it an ideal space for winding down.

Major Update #1: Crafting Our King-Sized Floating Bed
One of the most significant initial changes we undertook was addressing the very heart of the bedroom: the bed itself. With Stella, our newest furry family member, joining UDH and being granted full bed-sleeping privileges, there was no way our other dog, Charlie, was going to be excluded. This delightful development meant one thing: we desperately needed more space. I, personally, enjoy spreading out while sleeping, and our canine companions insist on snuggling right up against me, which, while endearing, can feel a bit stifling. The solution? We decided to design and construct our very own custom king-sized floating bed. This innovative design not only provides ample sleeping space for us and our beloved pups but also maintains an airy, uncluttered feel in the room, preventing it from appearing too heavy or cumbersome. We’re still fine-tuning the detailed plans for this DIY project, but rest assured, they will be shared soon!
Our next phase for the bed involves integrating a beautiful live-edge headboard and wrapping the same wood species around the base for a seamless, custom look. This will require a bit of saving, as quality larger wood slabs can easily command prices upwards of $1,000, and finding the perfect piece is a quest in itself. I’ve been exploring various online sources like Berkshire Products on Etsy, but we’re also open to sourcing locally if we can connect with the right supplier who offers unique, high-quality wood. The intention is to create a truly unique focal point that celebrates natural beauty and craftsmanship.

Once the bed frame was complete, my excitement to begin decorating was palpable. I immediately retrieved a cherished Moroccan wedding blanket, which had been patiently tucked away in my closet for years, always envisioned as a cornerstone of my primary bedroom design. I acquired this exquisite piece over seven years ago from a unique shop operating out of Marrakech, founded by a Morocco-based blogger who has since transformed into a textile connoisseur. It was a significant investment, something I saved diligently for, always intending it for this very room. Its sentimental value means I wasn’t willing to use it until the rest of the bedroom truly began to coalesce.
Since its purchase, the market has seen a surge of retail stores producing more budget-friendly, knockoff versions (and I’ve even linked to one above for those seeking a more accessible option). However, my blanket is a genuine vintage investment piece, incredibly heavy and rich with history. I carefully draped it over our new bed, with Charlie, ever the willing model, posing majestically. At this stage, almost everything else you see in the photos is a placeholder, awaiting the arrival of the carefully selected furnishings that will complete the room’s aesthetic.

The current wall color is also on the chopping block. While I genuinely loved the gray hue (Montpelier Ashlar Gray by Valspar, which appears to be discontinued now), the room now yearns for a brighter, more expansive feel. K is particularly keen on transitioning the walls to a crisp white, complemented by dark trim. This idea resonated immediately with me; it not only creates that coveted high-contrast look but also provides a perfect backdrop for heavier blackout curtains and other dark accents, such as the Tricorn Black paint I recently used outdoors near our fire pit and deck. This shift will dramatically alter the mood of the room, bringing a fresh, modern energy while enhancing its functional aspects.
Rugs, as anyone who has shopped for them knows, can be quite an investment. Therefore, Labor Day sales became my strategic moment to shine this year! With multiple retailers offering impressive discounts of 50%, 60%, and even 70% off, I embarked on a rigorous comparison-shopping mission. My efforts yielded incredible bargains: not one, but two rugs for the primary bedroom, a chic new rug for the dining room, and another for the guest bedroom. For our primary sanctuary, I secured a generous 8×10 jute rug, perfect for layering, and a smaller 5×7 shag-like rug to provide plush comfort at the foot of the bed. This layering technique adds both visual interest and practical softness underfoot, crucial for a bedroom.

This was my inaugural experience attempting to lay a natural fiber rug of this size and material. It arrived with a distinct, somewhat hay-like aroma, but thankfully, that dissipated naturally over the course of a few days. Getting it to lay perfectly flat presented a couple of interesting challenges: first, the natural fibers tend to stretch, making it tricky to maintain consistent tension without pulling it too tight or leaving it too loose. Second, our two resident “helpers,” Stella and Charlie, decided it was an excellent new game to sprawl out directly on the rug as we meticulously tried to smooth out every wrinkle. Despite their adorable antics, we eventually prevailed against our little stinkers!

After successfully positioning the larger jute rug as the foundational layer, we then carefully unrolled the more decorative black and white shag-like rug on top. From the moment I first laid eyes on this rug, I was captivated by its unique pattern and texture. K, however, required a bit more convincing. I’m incredibly relieved and happy that he ultimately trusted my vision (despite a minor initial hesitation!). The moment it was in place, it was clear: it’s absolutely perfect, adding just the right touch of modern global flair and softness.

Once K saw the rugs laid out together in the room, his initial reservations vanished, and he became a true convert. In fact, he now comments daily on how much he appreciates the new rugs and how well they complement each other. This kind of shared enthusiasm is incredibly encouraging, especially as we navigate the exciting challenge of designing a space that authentically reflects both of our styles and ensures mutual happiness. It’s a collaborative process, and moments like these reaffirm we’re heading in the right direction.
As these initial photographs illustrate, we’re currently in the process of selecting and adding new bed linens. I promise a fresh update once we have everything perfectly coordinated (and no, I’m not a fan of that temporary blue fitted sheet – new king-sized sheets are definitely on the shopping list!). The addition of these beautiful new rugs has already infused the room with immense style and character, and I’m eagerly looking forward to introducing even more thoughtfully chosen elements to complete this exciting transformation!
Deep Dive into Other Primary Bedroom Design Inspiration Elements:
Our mood board isn’t just about the big pieces; it’s about a holistic design that considers every detail. Here’s a closer look at some of the other inspiring items we’re planning to incorporate:
Monstera Plant (also affectionately known as the “Swiss Cheese Plant”) — I’ve been eyeing one of these for ages! While I sometimes chastise myself for falling prey to plant trends, I truly don’t care in this instance; these plants are simply stunning and bring such a vibrant, organic sculptural element to any space. A large Monstera will add a vital touch of living greenery to our high-contrast bedroom, softening the lines and bringing nature indoors.
Black and White Pillows — While many of the pillows featured on our inspiration board are from accessible retailers like Target (making them easy for you to shop via the links above), I’m also considering sourcing a few one-of-a-kind, artisanal pieces if I can find the perfect supplier. The idea is to layer different textures and subtle patterns within the black and white spectrum to create a rich, inviting bedding ensemble that feels both sophisticated and cozy.
Abstract Paintings — When I broached the topic of art with K, his initial, rather whimsical response was “Parks and Rec-style nude portraits,” clearly referencing these iconic pieces. While amusing, I think I’ll take the lead on this particular aesthetic decision! He did suggest a diptych or triptych for the large blank wall closest to his side of the bed. However, multi-panel art can sometimes lean towards the generic or tacky if not executed well. So, I’m leaning towards taking a page out of the Emily Henderson playbook, focusing on pieces that can stand alone but still feel cohesive. K had a brilliant counter-suggestion: that I paint a series myself using a consistent color palette, allowing them to hang together as a collection but also possess individual merit. Alternatively, we might consider a few striking black & white engineer print portraits of Charlie and Stella. While that idea would be fantastic in any room, given the strong black and white scheme we’re already establishing, incorporating some colorful (yet soothing and relaxing) abstract art might be the better choice to provide a much-needed pop and visual interest.
New Ceiling Fan — For a significant period, I had envisioned a grand, oversized light fixture as the crowning jewel of this room. However, practicality must prevail. This room tends to get quite warm, and a functional ceiling fan undeniably contributes to a better night’s sleep. My mission now is to find a stylish ceiling fan that expertly prioritizes comfort and air circulation without completely sacrificing aesthetics. This will undoubtedly be a challenging hunt, as so many options are either visually unappealing or prohibitively expensive. Nevertheless, I remain optimistic that the perfect blend of form and function exists out there!

And as for our furry companions, Stella and Charlie, they appear to be absolutely smitten with their new plush rugs. You can bet your bottom dollar that we’ve liberally applied Scotchgard to these beautiful additions to ensure they remain pristine and resilient against all the charming chaos our dogs undoubtedly bring!

So, there you have it – a comprehensive update on the exciting beginnings of our primary bedroom redesign. While there’s still much more to come, including finalizing paint colors, selecting artwork, and adding the finishing touches, I am absolutely thrilled with the direction this room is taking. It’s incredibly satisfying to see this long-neglected space finally receiving the thoughtful attention and stylistic vision it truly deserves. Stay tuned for future updates as we continue to transform this primary bedroom into a true sanctuary!
