Designer Look for Less: Our Nate Berkus Hurricane Vase Hack

Have you ever walked into a store, spotted a beautiful home decor item, only to gasp at the price tag? We certainly have! That’s exactly what happened when we first encountered Nate Berkus’s line at Target. Nate Berkus, a true icon in interior design, consistently brings accessible yet incredibly chic pieces to the market. While his collections offer fantastic value, we’re always up for a challenge to replicate high-end looks for even less. We like to imagine ourselves as good buddies with Nate (we even filmed a few episodes for his show!), so we’re pretty sure he wouldn’t mind us taking inspiration from one of his stunning creations.

Our inspiration for today’s project stems from a particularly gorgeous jute-wrapped hurricane vase from his collection. It retailed for $25+, which, while reasonable for a designer piece, felt like an exciting opportunity for a DIY ‘knock-off.’ We knew we could create something equally stunning, if not more personalized, for a fraction of that cost. The beauty of DIY isn’t just about saving money; it’s about the satisfaction of crafting something with your own hands and infusing your unique style into your home. This project is a testament to that philosophy – achieving a sophisticated, custom look without the hefty price tag.

After a little creative brainstorming and a trip to our favorite budget-friendly stores, here’s the dazzling result we came up with:

Isn’t it absolutely awesome? We are completely in love with the vibrant colors and the high-end aesthetic it achieves, especially considering it cost us less than $10 to make! This DIY hurricane vase is not just a centerpiece; it’s a conversation starter that proves luxury can be affordable and attainable for everyone. It’s perfect for adding a pop of color and texture to any room, whether you’re aiming for a coastal vibe, a cozy rustic feel, or just a touch of modern charm.

Essential Supplies for Your Designer DIY Hurricane Vase

Supplies for DIY hurricane vase project

Gathering the right materials is the first step to any successful DIY project. The beauty of this hurricane vase hack is that the supplies are not only affordable but also readily available. Here’s a detailed list of what you’ll need to create your own stunning piece of home decor:

  • Rope of any kind: The choice of rope is where you can truly personalize your vase. We found this fantastic multi-colored utility rope at a dollar store, which was a total score! Jute, cotton, or even sisal rope would also work wonderfully, offering different textures and aesthetics. Consider the thickness and color palette that best suits your home decor.
  • Ribbon: A sturdy ribbon is essential for covering the seam of your rope. We opted for navy grosgrain ribbon because of its appealing thickness and its classic, high-quality feel – plus, it complements the colorful rope perfectly! Choose a color that either matches or provides a striking contrast to your rope.
  • Large Hurricane Vase: This is the foundation of your project. We were lucky enough to find ours at Target for an incredible $2! Keep an eye out for clear glass hurricane vases at discount stores, thrift shops, or craft supply stores. The size you choose will dictate the overall presence of your finished piece.
  • Upholstery Tacks: These small but mighty details add a sophisticated, finished touch to your vase, mimicking the look of designer hardware. You can find them in various finishes (brass, silver, antique bronze) at hardware or craft stores.
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: Your trusty hot glue gun will be your best friend for this project. Ensure you have plenty of glue sticks on hand, as you’ll be doing a fair amount of gluing. Always exercise caution when working with hot glue.

These specific colors of rope were absolutely calling our name! The vibrant mix makes this hurricane vase incredibly versatile. It will undoubtedly look fantastic with holiday decor, adding a festive touch, but it’s also perfectly suited to brighten up your home year-round. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different rope colors and textures to match your personal style and existing decor.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Elegant Rope-Wrapped Hurricane Vase

Creating this stunning designer-inspired hurricane vase is simpler than you might think. Follow these easy steps, and you’ll have a beautiful, custom piece of home decor in no time!

1. Prepare Your First Rope Segment

Begin by taking your chosen rope and wrapping it tightly around the base of your hurricane vase. This first piece will serve as your template and the bottom-most layer. Once you’ve made a full circle and the ends meet, carefully cut the rope so that the two ends align perfectly. The goal here is a snug, even fit around the base. Ensure there’s no slack, as a tight wrap will result in a professional finish.

2. Secure the Rope Ends to Prevent Fraying

Rope, especially utility rope, can fray quite easily once cut. To prevent this and ensure a clean look, wrap a piece of regular tape tightly around each cut end of the rope. Don’t worry about the tape being visible; it will be completely hidden by the ribbon and other layers later on. This small but crucial step will make the entire assembly process much smoother and your finished product more durable.

3. Cut Remaining Rope Segments

Using the first cut rope piece as your template, measure and cut the remaining rope into as many strips as you’ll need to cover your hurricane vase. The number of strips will depend on the height of your vase and the thickness of your rope. Consistency in length is key for a uniform look. After cutting each piece, remember to wrap the ends with tape, just as you did with the first segment, to keep them from fraying.

4. Apply the First Layer of Rope

Now, it’s time to start adhering the rope to the vase. Starting at the very bottom, apply a generous line of hot glue around the entire base of the hurricane vase. Work quickly but carefully. Immediately take your first length of prepared rope and lay it around the glued base, pressing firmly to ensure it adheres well. Once the rope meets, put a small dab of hot glue on both ends and press them together to create a seamless join. This bottom layer needs to be secure as it sets the foundation for the rest of your design.

5. Layer the Remaining Rope Segments

Continue this process with all the remaining rope segments, stacking them snugly one above the other. It’s crucial to ensure that the ends of each new rope layer match up with the seam of the previous layer, maintaining a consistent vertical line down the vase. To conserve glue and prevent bulk, we only applied hot glue strategically: a dab at each end of the rope at the seam, a line along the back of the rope (opposite the seam), and then another small dab on the other side of the seam. You don’t need to glue all the way around each rope segment once the first base layer is secure. This method provides enough adhesion while keeping the process efficient and economical. We used 10 pieces of rope stacked on each other for our vase, but you’ll need to adjust this number based on the height and width of your specific hurricane vase to achieve the desired look.

6. Cover the Seam with Ribbon

Now for the elegant finishing touch: covering that vertical seam! Slightly pull the top piece of rope away from the glass. Run a thin line of hot glue behind it, starting from the top. Then, carefully tuck one end of your chosen ribbon behind the rope, pressing it into the glue. Continue running a thin line of glue down the entire length of the seam, pressing the ribbon firmly into place as you go. We used navy grosgrain ribbon because we appreciate its thickness and the refined look it offers – it’s a favorite of Nate’s, too! Don’t worry if a little glue gets on the glass; warm water and gentle scrubbing will easily remove it once dry.

7. Finish the Ribbon Underneath the Vase

To ensure a neat and secure finish, flip your hurricane vase upside down. Carefully cut your ribbon to the desired length, allowing just enough to fold and glue to the underside of the vase. Apply a line of hot glue to the underside and firmly press the ribbon down. Be mindful not to leave too much excess ribbon or use too much glue, as this could create an uneven surface and make your vase wobble. A clean, flat base is essential for stability and a polished look.

8. Add Decorative Upholstery Tacks

The final touch that truly elevates this DIY piece is the addition of upholstery tacks. These small details add a touch of sophisticated hardware, mirroring the high-end look of the original designer piece. However, nothing is ever as straightforward as it seems in DIY, and we found our tacks were a bit too long. Our solution was to carefully cut off the back pin of each tack using heavy-duty wire cutters. Once trimmed, we added a small dab of hot glue to the back of the tack and pressed it firmly through the ribbon, ensuring it laid flush and securely against the rope. Space them evenly along the ribbon for a balanced, elegant pattern.

Ta-da! And there you have it – your very own designer-inspired rope-wrapped hurricane vase! We have to admit, Mr. Berkus, while we adore your original, we’re a little partial to our vibrant, budget-friendly version. Thank you for the wonderful inspiration! This project is a fantastic example of how creativity and a little elbow grease can transform simple materials into a stunning statement piece for your home.
