The Unseen Face

Every significant home improvement project has its initial phase that’s far from glamorous – the messy, chaotic, and often downright ugly beginning. While everyone dreams of the beautiful “after” shots, the journey to get there is often fraught with dust, disruption, and unexpected discoveries. For us, that journey has plunged our home into a temporary state of disarray, as our beloved kitchen undergoes the much-needed makeover it truly deserves. We’re skipping past the good and the bad for a moment to focus on the raw, authentic start – the ugly truth of renovation.

Currently, our kitchen is a full-blown construction zone, rendering it practically unusable for its primary purpose. The demolition phase, while exhilarating in its promise of new beginnings, has left us with a giant mess. This means our culinary adventures have been temporarily put on hold, forcing us to get a little creative with our daily meals and embrace a new routine. The thought of cooking anything beyond a microwave meal in this environment is simply out of the question for the foreseeable future, adding an extra layer of challenge to our ambitious DIY kitchen remodel.

The initial steps of our kitchen flooring installation have begun with the preparation of the subfloor and the laying of the underlayment. This crucial stage ensures a stable, even surface for our new flooring. To help the underlayment properly adhere and settle, we employed a rather unconventional yet highly effective method: using stacks of canned foods as temporary weights. It’s a testament to the ingenuity often sparked during DIY home improvement projects – sometimes, the simplest solutions are found right in your pantry! This creative use of household items highlights the resourcefulness often required when undertaking a full-scale home renovation.

Despite the ongoing chaos, we are making significant headway with the flooring installation, one plank and one challenge at a time. This progress, however, didn’t come without its share of heavy lifting. Before we could even think about laying down new floor surfaces, we had to meticulously move around all the major kitchen appliances. The refrigerator, surprisingly, proved to be a fairly manageable task to relocate. Once it was out of the way, I seized the opportunity to continue the vital task of caulking around the perimeter of the room. This meticulous attention to detail is crucial for preventing potential moisture problems and ensuring the longevity of our newly installed kitchen flooring, a small but impactful step in our comprehensive kitchen remodel.

While the fridge presented a relatively straightforward move, the oven was an entirely different story – it was just plain grody. We had made an effort to sweep and thoroughly clean the immediate area when we initially swapped out the old stove. However, the true horror lay hidden beneath. Removing the aged linoleum from underneath this heavy appliance required me to (ahem) actually touch the floor here. This particular corner of our old house renovation unveiled a level of accumulated grime that frankly, was beyond anything we had anticipated. It’s moments like these that truly define the “ugly” side of home renovation projects, reminding us that transformation often means confronting unpleasant realities.

Prepare yourselves, because what I am about to share is arguably the most unflattering, stomach-churning photograph I have ever posted on this blog – seriously. For those who remember the infamous fingernail story, that anecdote predates my very first blog post. However, since embarking on this renovation journey and committing to documenting every step, I’ve decided to pull back the curtain and share even the absolute worst of the nasty discoveries for all to see. I won’t pretend that sharing such a candid, unsightly image doesn’t make me a little nervous, but if all I ever showed you were perfectly staged, pretty pictures, I would only be telling you about ten percent of the whole, authentic story of our kitchen transformation. The reality of DIY home improvement often includes these less-than-glamorous moments, and it’s important to capture the full scope of the experience.
Clearly, the previous occupant of our house had some serious issues with using cleaning agents – anything containing bleach, ammonia, or even simple vinegar seemed to be off-limits. The sheer accumulation of grime and stains under the oven was truly appalling. BLECH. You’d better believe that the complete removal of that stained, disgusting linoleum was followed by an intense, thorough scrubbing (again, and then some more scrubbing!), and finally, a restorative coat of Kilz primer. This multi-step process wasn’t just about preparing for our new kitchen flooring; it was about sanitizing, deodorizing, and reclaiming a truly repulsive space. The relief that came with seeing that area clean and prepped was immense, allowing me to sleep a heck of a lot better knowing that particular nightmare was finally banished. This thorough cleaning and sealing is a critical step in any old house renovation, especially when dealing with such unexpected discoveries.
With the challenging linoleum removal complete and the area meticulously cleaned, we’re now one significant step closer to having a kitchen that’s actually worth cooking in. And it’s a good thing, too. After a wonderful vacation that involved plenty of indulgence, we’ve accumulated some unwanted souvenirs around our midsections. Being forced to rely solely on takeout meals throughout this renovation isn’t exactly helping our quest for healthier eating habits. The motivation to get this kitchen finished and functional is strong, driven by a desire to get back to home-cooked meals and a more balanced lifestyle, making this kitchen transformation even more imperative.

The sheer volume of dust and debris generated by this kitchen renovation forces us to keep the doors and windows open constantly. Thankfully, it’s October, and the weather has cooled down significantly, allowing us to go without air conditioning for a little while. This natural ventilation is a blessing, helping to dissipate the pervasive renovation dust that seems to settle on everything. The only member of our household not entirely enjoying the bustling goings-on in the kitchen was Colby, our canine companion, who was only permitted to supervise our progress from the safety and relative cleanliness of the patio. His watchful eyes, however, served as a constant reminder of our domestic disruption.

After six solid hours of diligent work, the kitchen isn’t entirely complete, but we’re undeniably getting there. The transformation is tangible, and the vision of our new, functional kitchen is slowly but surely coming into focus. Barring any unforeseen and serious issues with the fridge or gas connection, we confidently anticipate completing the main kitchen floor installation within the next week. Just thinking about reaching that milestone makes me want to do a happy dance! The overwhelming sense of relief that will accompany a fully installed floor will be immense, marking a major triumph in our DIY kitchen remodel. This progress fuels our motivation to push through the final stages of what has been a challenging yet rewarding home improvement project.

Oh yeah, but we’re not quite done yet. There’s still more to tackle before our dream kitchen is fully realized – but every step, even the ugly ones, brings us closer to the finish line. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting renovation journey!
