Embracing the Haven Hangover: A Deep Dive into the DIY Blogging Community
Fresh off the heels of the exhaustive DIY conference known as Haven, I find myself in that familiar state of post-conference bliss mixed with utter exhaustion. Fortunately, for me, this incredible event unfolds annually right here in Atlanta, sparing me the extensive travel logistics that many attendees face. However, even without the long journey, if you’ve never experienced the intensity of a major conference, trust me when I say: I am utterly tired. My entire yesterday, the first full day back home, was dedicated to sprawling out in bed with Charlie, recovering from what I’ve affectionately dubbed “The Haven Hangover.” This peculiar state of fatigue impacts even non-drinkers, though I must admit, a few beers certainly played their part in my personal recovery process this time around. It’s a testament to the energy, networking, and pure creative exhilaration that a conference like Haven packs into just a few days.

Three Years and Counting: Why I Keep Coming Back to Haven
Having previously shared my insights and highlights from year one and year two of the Haven Conference, I felt compelled to offer a more personal reflection this time. My goal is to articulate precisely why, after three consecutive years of attending the same conference, I still eagerly returned, and how my experience and motivations have profoundly shifted with each passing event. It’s not merely about the sessions or the swag; it’s about the evolving connections, the deepening friendships, and the unique sense of belonging that only a niche community can offer. This year, the focus was less on business and more on the invaluable human connections forged within the vibrant DIY blogging world.

What Exactly is the Haven Conference? A Hub for DIY Home Bloggers
The Haven Conference was founded just a few years ago by a group of visionary, seasoned bloggers who recognized a distinct need for a conference tailored specifically to their niche. While other notable blogging conferences exist, such as SNAP! and Alt, they tend to cater to different segments of the creative community. For instance, SNAP! often focuses on crafts and lifestyle, while Alt leans towards higher-end design and fashion blogging. The very name “SNAP!” with its all-caps and exclamation point, probably hints that it might not be the ideal fit for a power-tool-wielding, dirt-under-the-fingernails DIY enthusiast like myself. Haven, however, proudly stands as the premier gathering exclusively for DIY home bloggers and anyone deeply invested in this dynamic genre. It’s a space where those who transform houses into homes, one project at a time, can connect, learn, and grow together.

The Diverse Voices of DIY: Who You’ll Meet at Haven
Despite what might seem like a highly specific niche – “DIY home” – the Haven Conference consistently draws a surprisingly vast and diverse array of blogger types. It’s truly fascinating to witness the breadth of talent and passion under one roof. You’ll encounter bloggers who are simply astonishing at styling and showcasing their magazine-worthy room makeovers, like the creative minds behind The Hunted Interior. Then there are those who excel at organization and crafting a functional, beautiful home perfectly suited for their family, much like the expertise shared by Organizing Made Fun. The conference also hosts masters of furniture rehabilitation and thrifting, epitomized by blogs such as Vintage Revivals. And let’s not forget the home renovation experts, who might spend their time enthusiastically checking out the latest eye protection styles and delving into innovative DIY-friendly concrete solutions, echoing the spirit of Pretty Handy Girl. And then, there’s always me – the one who mostly just wants to play with power tools and enjoy a refreshing beer, reveling in the practical, hands-on side of DIY. It’s this rich tapestry of skills and interests that makes Haven such a vibrant and inspiring gathering.

At its core, Haven serves as an invaluable real-world nexus, allowing a multitude of bloggers who primarily interact online to finally converge in a single physical space. It’s an opportunity for face-to-face conversations, spontaneous collaborations, and the deepening of connections that virtual interactions simply cannot replicate. And, yes, it also provides a unique chance for a little bit of face time with prominent figures in the home improvement world, like Mike Holmes and Chip Wade, adding another layer of excitement and learning to the experience.

This year also brought a delightful new addition to the conference atmosphere: an abundance of baby snuggles, further solidifying the sense of community and shared life experiences among attendees.

Beyond the Screen: The Power of Real-Life Connections for Bloggers
I’ve been immersed in the blogging world long enough to witness its transformation from a somewhat obscure hobby into a ubiquitous activity that seemingly everyone engages in today. Despite its widespread adoption, it can still feel a bit peculiar to bring up blogging in conversations with non-blogging friends. Mentioning it on a first date, for example, often elicits an anticipated eye-roll, or at best, a polite but unenthusiastic “oh… that’s neat.” Furthermore, explaining the crucial need to pause a DIY project mid-way to capture a photo of its half-finished state – simply “because blog” – often falls on deaf ears outside our specific community. There’s a subtle, yet profound, disconnect when others don’t fully grasp the unique demands and intrinsic value of documenting one’s creative process for an online audience.

However, for three precious days each year, the Haven Conference creates a sanctuary where a vibrant group of individuals truly gets it. Every dinner conversation, every interaction with a vendor representative, and every class attended is built upon a shared, fervent passion for DIY and blogging. The sessions are meticulously designed to address what matters most to us: from mastering strategies for building a more user-friendly blog and exploring the latest power tool innovations, to gaining invaluable hands-on training for superior photography – encompassing both styling techniques and essential camera knowledge. We all converge in this one special place, which means you get to finally meet the people whose work you admire, and they get to connect with their own inspirations. In this exchange, countless new friendships blossom. And this year, forging and reinforcing these genuine connections was precisely my primary motivation for attending. It’s a space where the shared understanding eliminates the need for explanation, allowing for deeper, more authentic interactions centered around our common interests.
The Evolving Haven Experience: From Networking to Deepening Friendships
In previous years, my Haven experience was heavily focused on traditional networking. I dedicated considerable time to engaging with vendors, seeking out and introducing myself to the “big blogs” whose work I deeply admired, and diligently attending blog-savvy classes designed to elevate my platform. After all, a conference is an ideal setting to establish new professional relationships or simply express gratitude to representatives with whom you’ve previously collaborated. Blogging, in many aspects, is a business, and strategic networking remains an undeniably crucial element (a path I would still wholeheartedly recommend to any new blogger just starting out). Yet, this year, my priorities shifted significantly. My blog has matured to a point where it contributes a meaningful portion of my income, and while networking is still vital, my intrinsic desire lay elsewhere. Given only three precious days to spend with some of the most wonderful people I now find myself texting on a daily or weekly basis, cultivating those genuine friendships became my sole focus. I wanted to move beyond mere professional pleasantries and dive into authentic, unfiltered connection. We talked a little about blogging, of course, but primarily, we reconnected with the core reason I started blogging in the first place: the pure, unadulterated joy of connecting with others who truly understand the unique journey of DIY and sharing it online. They don’t tire of me talking about my latest projects and ideas. We shared the good and the bad, celebrated the wonderful opportunities that arise from this path, and eagerly discussed our next plans – what we’re going to build, where we’re going to go. And sometimes, this meant even falling awkwardly on the dance floor in front of a table full of handsome Ryobi tool representatives, a testament to the uninhibited fun and comfort found among true friends.

Learning & Laughing: The Human Element of Conference Memories
Yep, that rather embarrassing dance floor incident certainly happened. I was in the process of gracefully (or so I thought) stepping off the dance floor when a friend playfully hip-bumped me, catching me completely off guard. My attention was clearly elsewhere at that precise moment (and no, it wasn’t Jessica, bless her heart). I could easily deflect blame – point fingers at my friend’s playful nudge, my inherent clumsiness, or perhaps the few Coronas I’d indulged in to summon the kind of confidence this “white girl” needs to “Get Low” so many years post-college. Regardless of the exact cause, the undeniable truth is that on the final night of the conference, I spectacularly ate it while wearing a white dress, right in front of a table brimming with attentive guys. And let’s be honest: hiring that many good-looking dudes to assist at a conference primarily attended by 400+ women simply cannot be a mere coincidence; it’s a strategically brilliant move!
But you know what? As my friends rushed to help me up, I was already on the verge of tears – from laughing so hard at myself. We were having an absolutely fantastic time, and the sheer joy of seeing each other after a year apart was palpable. The goodbyes that followed were noticeably longer and tinged with more sadness than usual, filled with promises and plans for visits that would extend beyond the once-a-year conference. It was exactly as I had hoped it would be, a perfect culmination of friendship, laughter, and shared understanding. These are the moments that truly define the Haven experience for me now – less about the formal learning and more about the invaluable human connection and the unforgettable memories we create together.
The Future of Haven: Embracing New Roles and Possibilities
In all honesty, I’m genuinely uncertain whether I’ll return to Haven next year in the same capacity. The structured classes, while always informative, are increasingly becoming less of the core reason for my attendance. My focus has shifted from being a student to perhaps, a contributor. I’ve been contemplating the idea of switching roles and attempting to teach a class instead. The thought has sparked my creativity, leading me to ponder potential topics. “How to Not Fall on the Dance Floor” inexplicably springs to mind as a viable option – and why not? I have an entire year to perfect my footwork and perhaps even develop a comprehensive prevention strategy! More seriously, I’d love to share insights on practical DIY skills, advanced power tool techniques, or even the evolving landscape of long-term blogging. The desire to give back to this incredible community, sharing the knowledge and experiences I’ve gained over the years, is becoming a stronger pull than merely attending. Regardless of my future role, the profound sense of connection and the vibrant spirit of the DIY blogging community will undoubtedly continue to draw me back, even if it’s just for those lingering, heartfelt goodbyes.
