My Tiny Laundry Room Makeover Project for Online TV Episode 1

Back in late 2013, a truly exciting opportunity presented itself: the chance to live out a long-held fantasy of becoming one of those dynamic DIY designers often seen on television. The very thought of navigating the inevitable chaos, grappling with stringent budget limitations, and working under an extremely tight timeline filled me with a mix of exhilaration and disbelief. It seemed utterly wild, yet incredibly tempting. Frankly, I couldn’t fathom why anyone would entrust me, of all people, with such a monumental task. But when SheKnowsTV extended an invitation to join the cast of an online season of Homestretch as a featured designer, I enthusiastically accepted. Part of me, though, fully expected them to realize their “mistake” at any moment and send me packing on the next flight home.

From the window seat – journeying to a DIY home makeover adventure

This incredible journey led me to meet a wonderful couple grappling with a common homeowner’s dilemma: finding practical solutions for their incredibly small laundry room. What began as a simple need quickly evolved into one of the most challenging yet profoundly rewarding DIY projects I’ve undertaken to date. The hard work paid off, transforming their cramped space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing area. Upon my return, I was bursting with anticipation to share all the behind-the-scenes details and the stunning laundry room makeover pictures with my readers.

However, the nature of television production meant I had to patiently wait for the episodes to be edited and released before I could reveal the final makeover photos. This delay unfortunately pushed the recap post further and further down my editorial calendar. As I resumed my regular projects at home and the holiday season approached, finding the perfect time to revisit and adequately describe this experience became increasingly difficult. Despite having gone on to complete a successful second season on a different room with another fantastic couple, this initial project remained a story untold.

Recently, with a lull in my current kitchen makeover endeavors (waiting for those walls to be finished and painted!), a perfect window opened up to finally offer a proper, in-depth recap of both this initial laundry room transformation and the subsequent living room project. Today, I’m thrilled to begin this series by pulling back the curtain and sharing some highlights and candid behind-the-scenes insights into what it was truly like to be on camera as a DIY designer. There’s far too much to cover in a single post, especially once we dive into the intricate details of all the design decisions. Therefore, I’m structuring this as a multi-part series, starting with the fascinating prelude to the design. In a forthcoming post later this week, I’ll share practical tips on how to maximize organization and storage in even the smallest of rooms. Get ready to enjoy this exciting journey!

Stepping Into the Spotlight: My Filming Experience

It turns out my initial hunch about the “nuts” part of television production was entirely accurate. Being in front of the camera for two consecutive days, enduring non-stop filming with constant interruptions, was an experience like no other. We faced countless re-takes, on-camera interviews, and the frustrating necessity of halting power tool usage because microphones and loud saws, as I quickly learned, are indeed mortal enemies (#themoreyouknow). This was, without a doubt, one of the most intimidating challenges I’ve ever faced, and I honestly felt on the verge of tears at least half the time. While I might not have shown it, I carry a significant amount of camera anxiety, which is precisely why I’ve been actively practicing live streams recently to build my comfort level. Before delving into the makeover specifics, I must extend immense gratitude to the entire SheKnowsTV crew; they were absolutely amazing. Despite the growing lump in my throat and the fear of embarrassing myself with what I perceived as complete ineptitude, they provided unwavering support and precisely the kind of encouragement I needed to push through and embrace every challenge they presented.

The requests were certainly ambitious:

“Two days for a complete room transformation? Absolutely! Even though I’d never completed a project of this scale in such a short timeframe, let alone navigating the unique stop-start rhythm of filming the entire process. And all this learning, of course, under the unblinking eye of the camera.”

“A budget of just $2,000 for a top-to-bottom room makeover? Consider it done! Despite never having precisely budgeted for an entire room renovation before, I was eager to see what magic could be created.”

The reality is, as a dedicated DIYer, my usual approach often involves a degree of improvisation. While I conduct extensive research to feel adequately prepared for any project I undertake, most of the creative endeavors I share on this blog are entirely new experiences for me. That sense of discovery and learning is a significant part of the fun, but it also means that I am, without a shadow of a doubt, *not* an expert. The daunting prospect of appearing on camera, expected to instruct others in DIY skills while acutely aware of my own non-expert status, was profoundly terrifying. This feeling was compounded by the fact that I was competing against another talented DIYer who, despite being a wonderful blogging friend I’d known for years (which did offer some comfort in agreeing to the challenge), was an absolute powerhouse builder. I’m sure many of you will recognize her incredible work.

So, there I was, plunged into this exhilarating yet nerve-wracking situation. Less than a week after signing the contract, I was whisked away to sunny Scottsdale, Arizona, for filming. My arrival at the airport was met by a private driver – an entirely new and rather exciting experience for me at that point. This glamorous touch was just the beginning of a whirlwind adventure.

I was lodged in an absolutely stunning resort hotel, a luxurious perk that, unfortunately, I only got to truly enjoy for about an hour each night before succumbing to exhaustion from the demanding filming days. It was a beautiful place, a welcome haven even if fleetingly experienced.

For the first time, I found myself sitting in a makeup chair, being prepped by a professional artist – a truly surreal moment! Who would have thought a DIY enthusiast like me would ever experience such pampering?

Then came the less glamorous reality: wearing a
