Embarking on a significant backyard leveling project has been an monumental journey, and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief as it moves from my daunting to-do list to a celebrated accomplishment. It’s not just the physical labor that feels complete, but the act of documenting every step, compiling these transformative before and after photos, and finally sharing the accompanying video. After more than six years of chronicling the evolution of my “Ugly Duckling House,” these detailed recaps are absolutely essential to my sense of project closure and personal satisfaction.

For years, the idea of tackling my uneven backyard, complete with a persistent sinkhole, felt like an insurmountable challenge. This dream project, a true wish-list item since I first moved into the UDH, was repeatedly deferred due to a trifecta of concerns: time constraints, financial investment, and a profound lack of experience in literally manipulating the earth to my will. The sheer logistics alone were enough to induce analysis paralysis. Calculating the necessary cubic yards of fill dirt, figuring out how such a massive quantity of soil would even be distributed across my property, navigating potential county approvals, and estimating the project’s duration all seemed incredibly intimidating. Each detail piled up, creating a compelling list of reasons *not* to start. Without a clear vision of the finished landscape, procrastination became an easy default.
Yet, here I am, not just talking about it, but showing you the results. I assure you, with the right approach and equipment, you absolutely can tackle a project of this scale. I did it, and the experience was truly awesome.

A Comprehensive Look at My Backyard Transformation Journey:
To fully appreciate the scope of this backyard transformation, it’s worth a quick recap of the initial planning and preparation. In a previous post, I detailed how this entire undertaking suddenly materialized. A crucial first step involved understanding the root cause of the sinkhole – often, as in my case, buried debris from past construction. Selecting the right equipment was paramount; a backhoe from Compact Power Equipment Rental proved to be the ideal choice for its versatility. Equally vital was contacting 811 (“Call Before You Dig”) to identify and mark any buried utilities, a non-negotiable safety measure. Sourcing and arranging the delivery of vast quantities of fill dirt also required careful coordination. These preparatory steps, though seemingly minor, lay the groundwork for a successful and safe project.

The second phase focused on the “before” state of the yard – a true testament to its “ugly duckling” moniker. We examined the various prerequisite projects that had to be completed before the heavy machinery could even arrive, such as significant pine tree removal. Learning to operate the backhoe was an adventure in itself; initially clumsy, I gradually gained confidence, feeling the machine respond to my commands. This stage also saw the strategic recruitment of friends for “free labor” – a fun, collaborative effort that made light work of some of the more tedious tasks. Their presence not only provided much-needed assistance but also added a great deal of camaraderie to the endeavor.

By the time I left off in previous updates, the yard was already undergoing a dramatic transformation. I found myself standing in areas previously deemed too dangerous or inaccessible due to the gaping sinkhole. The sheer volume of fill dirt required multiple trips from my driveway to the backyard, a logistical dance necessitated by low power lines that prevented larger trucks from entering further. However, by the end of days two and three, the visible changes were profound, particularly in the previously neglected back-left corner of the yard.

Starting on Thursday morning, it took nearly two full days of dedicated work to distribute the entire first massive truckload of fill dirt across the yard. Operating the backhoe became a rhythmic ballet of scooping, transporting, and carefully maneuvering the earth. For my neighbors, witnessing this operation was quite the spectacle. I’d ride the powerful machine, scoop up dirt, and meticulously navigate it to the back, eliciting grins and thumbs-ups from dog walkers, and utterly confusing the kids getting off the school bus. The powerful engine roaring, the bucket churning the earth – it was an undeniable presence in the neighborhood.
After diligently compacting the sandy fill dirt – primarily by lowering the backhoe’s front bucket and pressing it along the ground – a new realization struck: I would definitely need a layer of nutrient-rich topsoil to successfully establish new grass. As my neighbor wisely pointed out, all this effort could be undone by rainfall erosion without the stabilizing effect of a healthy lawn. I promptly called the soil suppliers for a second load, only to hit a snag: they were closed for the weekend and couldn’t deliver until Monday morning. This was a definite disappointment, especially since I had a crew of friends lined up for that evening to help move more dirt. With the essential topsoil delayed, we pivoted. Instead, my friends cheerfully tackled the arduous task of removing the numerous roots left over from last year’s significant pine tree removal. It turned a minor setback into a productive, root-clearing session that everyone seemed to genuinely enjoy!

Sunday, lacking fresh deliveries, was primarily dedicated to detailed compaction and grading. I focused on fine-tuning the levelness of the yard and scooping up any remaining dirt piles from the driveway – the one area where compaction seemed to happen with annoying ease. I also took the opportunity to fill another sunken spot in the front yard, a practical step that would simplify future mowing. Additionally, I dug up the last of the unwanted plants I intended to clear out. The resulting pile of vegetation was laughably enormous; it was hard to believe all that organic clutter had resided in my yard!

Crucially, I meticulously piled and separated all removed organic matter. The original sinkhole problem, I discovered, stemmed from buried construction debris when the house was first built. To prevent a recurring issue, I was exceptionally cautious, ensuring every large branch, root, and bush was removed, leaving behind only thoroughly compacted, clean dirt. This rigorous approach to debris removal is vital for the long-term stability of the re-graded landscape.
Finally, the much-anticipated topsoil arrived, allowing me to complete the final layer of this extensive project. The process of distributing this rich, dark earth was the satisfying culmination of days of hard work. My final Day 5 reflections were captured in another Facebook Live video, marking the near completion of the major earth-moving phase.

My canine companion, Charlie, initially seemed a little bewildered by the drastic changes, much like someone renovating her personal “bathroom.” However, she quickly adapted, and now appears to thoroughly enjoy the expanded, explorable terrain of the backyard.

Once my rental period concluded, it was time to arrange for the equipment pickup. The process was straightforward: a thorough hose-down to clean the machine and a full tank of fuel, and it was ready to be returned. A bittersweet farewell to my powerful new assistant!

I understand that for some, the visual transformation might not appear as dramatic as other home makeovers. However, I assure you, after enduring months of carefully navigating around a giant, treacherous pit behind a tree, the ability to walk freely across my *entire yard* is nothing short of monumental. This project represents a reclaiming of space, a profound increase in safety, and an immense boost to the yard’s usability. The most incredible side effect of resolving this foundational issue was the sudden rush of inspiration for the rest of the backyard’s design. The mental block was gone, and plans started flowing freely! I felt like Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams; once the initial groundwork was laid, the rest of the vision emerged.

It’s been a couple of months since the major leveling, and with the old pine straw now cleared, I’m bursting with ideas for the next phases. My favorite new development? That formerly overgrown, inaccessible back corner is now the absolute perfect spot for a garden shed – a truly functional and aesthetic improvement that was simply impossible before.

At Compact Power Equipment Rental’s request, I compiled the highlights of my week-long heavy equipment experience into a concise YouTube video, featuring plenty of “me in action” footage. If you encounter any issues with the embedded video below, simply click the provided link to watch it directly (and consider subscribing for more DIY videos!). I’ve also uploaded the previous Facebook Live videos to a single playlist for convenient viewing.
Let’s take one last look at the dramatic transformation. Here’s the “before” – a treacherous, craggy, scraggy mess, hindering usability and safety:

And now, the stunning “after” – an aerial view revealing a functional, level landscape! As the yard was meticulously leveled, one stubborn “ground” stump became evident; it was simply too large to remove with the backhoe alone. My current plan is to utilize it as a burn pile for a while, slowly reducing its size before proceeding with the next phase of landscaping. The yard still maintains a subtle slope, a deliberate design choice to ensure natural water drainage from my property to my neighbor’s, without disrupting established runoff patterns. I’m particularly proud of preserving this critical aspect of environmental flow.

While I’ve already begun sowing grass seed, transforming the entire area into a lush, green lawn will be a longer, ongoing process. There’s still so much left to do, but the most daunting hurdle has been cleared.
