Where Memories Reside, My Future Begins

From Ugly Duckling to Dream Home: My DIY Renovation Journey Begins!

Every home has a story, and I’m finally ready to share mine. Thanks to a friend’s inspiring idea and the invaluable encouragement from my loved ones, I’ve decided to channel my long-standing obsession with houses into something tangible and shareable: a dedicated blog chronicling my very own home renovation adventure. This isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s about transforming a house into a home, one DIY project at a time.

A charming house viewed from the street, ready for a makeover.

The genesis of this endeavor is quite straightforward. Like many, I grew weary of pouring money into rent with nothing to show for it. Fueled by savings and the timely first-time homebuyer incentive of 2009-2010, I took the plunge and purchased my own home. It’s a charming, albeit somewhat neglected, property nearing its third decade. I’ve quickly discovered that this house possesses a distinct personality—a bit cranky, visibly tired, and undeniably in dire need of a comprehensive makeover.

Over the coming months, and quite possibly years, my mission is to lovingly transform this “ugly duckling” into a space that truly reflects my vision and fills me with immense pride. A place where I can joyfully entertain guests, knowing every corner tells a tale of transformation. A significant portion of this journey will be tackled through DIY projects, and I’m committed to documenting every step, including a dedicated section for “lessons learned” after each undertaking. Given my self-professed clumsiness, I anticipate a fair share of humorous mishaps for onlookers and moments of utter frustration for me. However, I’m not embarking on this adventure alone. My incredible partner, Scott, and my ever-supportive parents have graciously offered their assistance whenever needed, a gesture for which I am profoundly grateful.

This blog commences a few months after I officially moved in, meaning several initial projects are already under my belt. To provide a complete narrative, I’ll take you back to the very beginning, detailing the early stages, the initial challenges, and the misadventures that defined my first few months as a homeowner. And, of course, expect plenty of photographic evidence of my progress!

A Glimpse into the Past: Before the Transformation Began

Stepping into this house for the first time was an experience. The previous owner, whom I’ve affectionately dubbed “Old Lady” (a title confirmed by neighbors who described her as quite the recluse), had clearly settled into a lifestyle that didn’t prioritize cleaning or modern aesthetics. While the initial photos are a bit fuzzy, taken not with my camera but offering a crucial historical record, they vividly illustrate the home’s state at the time of purchase. Considering that most houses within my constrained budget were far worse off, this property truly felt like a diamond in the rough. One thing was abundantly clear: she certainly had an affinity for the color blue!

The living room, for instance, was a veritable sea of blue: a blue couch, blue curtains, a blue planter, a blue rug, and even blue artificial flowers. It was a monochrome statement that spoke volumes about its past.

The kitchen, a place meant for culinary creation, proudly showcased its “state-of-the-art” 1970s design, complete with tired cabinets and fixtures that had seen better decades. It was a space begging for a modern touch.

Even the primary bathroom, intended as a luxurious sanctuary, was a relic of its time, featuring outdated tiles and fixtures that contributed to the home’s overall sense of weariness.

And what about the primary bedroom? You guessed it: more blue! It was a consistent theme throughout the home, leaving no doubt about the previous owner’s favorite hue.

The Initial Overhaul: First Steps to a Cleaner Slate

The moment Scott and I moved in, the real work began. As a thoughtful housewarming gift, my parents arranged for a professional carpet cleaning. While a temporary solution, it was much needed. The previous owner’s neglect extended to basic maintenance, as evidenced by years of uncleaned air filters. This meant dust constantly recirculated, settling on every surface and deeply embedding itself into the already aging 70s brown carpet. Despite the cleaning, the carpet’s original hue remained stubbornly intact, reminding us that a full replacement was a priority (hopefully by May!).

After the carpet received its much-needed clean, our focus shifted to a thorough deep clean of the entire house. We meticulously cleaned out every air duct and wiped down every surface, determined to banish the lingering dust and stale air. The old curtains, left behind by the “Old Lady,” were promptly taken down, not only to flood the rooms with much-needed natural light but also to serve a new purpose: they became impromptu drop cloths for our upcoming painting projects—a fantastic, unexpected freebie!

Before any wall painting could commence, however, we had a more pressing issue to tackle: the ceilings. Although I couldn’t detect a smoker’s odor, the pervasive yellowing on every ceiling provided undeniable evidence. This revelation prompted my inaugural trip to Home Depot, where I stocked up on several gallons of crisp white ceiling paint. We proceeded to paint every single room. Our strategy was simple: since we planned to paint or replace nearly everything eventually, we forewent tedious taping and excessive worrying about the existing carpet, focusing instead on efficiency and comprehensive coverage.

The transformation of the ceilings was immediately dramatic. Below is a striking photo illustrating the worst affected area. In the kitchen, after removing two large, clunky ceiling fans, the stark contrast between the newly painted, pristine white ceiling and the deeply yellowed, protected area beneath the fan cover was astonishing. The fresh white paint not only significantly brightened each room but also noticeably diminished the lingering “old-house” smell, instantly making the space feel cleaner and more inviting.

The Living Room’s Evolution: A Tale of Two Tints

With the ceilings gleaming white, Scott and I turned our attention to the living room walls. I envisioned a warm, inviting tan that would beautifully contrast with the soon-to-be-painted white trim. Given that the living room walls seamlessly extended into the hallway and up the stairs, I decided to purchase a 5-gallon drum of Valspar’s “Fresh Bread” to ensure perfect color consistency throughout. On the paint chip, it was exactly what I wanted. On my walls? It was unmistakably gold. Not the subtle, warm tan I had agonized over for days. The frustration was immense, realizing I had just invested a significant sum in a large bucket of paint that simply wouldn’t work.

My next attempt at selecting the perfect wall color, after much deliberation, surprisingly led us back to Scott’s initial instinct. You know how it goes: I spent over a week sifting through an endless array of “beige” and “tan” swatches, meticulously narrowing down my options. Meanwhile, Scott walked into the room, pointed to a single swatch, and declared, “That one.” And, of course, he was right.

So, it was back to the store, where we ultimately settled on Waverly’s “Sandy Shell” (also a Valspar paint). However, I learned a valuable lesson in paint procurement. Instead of purchasing it at Lowe’s, where Valspar is typically sold, I opted for Behr paint at Home Depot. Behr offers excellent coverage, is often more budget-friendly, and, crucially, can be custom-matched to any competitor’s paint swatch. This savvy move saved us approximately $45 on the 5 gallons, a saving that could then be reallocated towards the upcoming trim paint. It was a small victory, but a victory nonetheless in our budget-conscious renovation.

Revitalizing the Heart of the Home: The Kitchen Begins

The kitchen, without a doubt, presents the most significant challenge and requires a tremendous amount of work to bring it into the 21st century. It’s currently a blend of outdated design and functional shortcomings, but I see immense potential.

Kitchen Before the Upgrade

Take a look at the kitchen in its original state, clearly demonstrating the need for a major overhaul.

While I have a plethora of exciting ideas for this space, comprehensive budgeting takes time and careful planning. Our first major strategic purchase for the kitchen involved replacing the appliances. A swift trip to Brandsmart, followed by a mere 20 minutes of decision-making, resulted in the removal of the old, broken dishwasher and its replacement with a sleek, contemporary black model. We also acquired a brand-new black gas stove, instantly elevating the kitchen’s functionality and aesthetic.

The plan was to eventually replace the refrigerator, but an exceptional deal, coupled with attractive Energy Star credit incentives, accelerated that timeline. I seized the opportunity to purchase a new stainless-steel refrigerator, while the old one found a new home in the garage, serving as extra storage. During the appliance delivery, a minor but memorable hiccup arose: the new refrigerator wouldn’t quite fit under the existing cabinets. However, the difference was minimal, and with a bit of careful sanding on the offending cabinet edge, it slid into place perfectly, a testament to quick thinking and a bit of DIY improvisation.

Reflecting on Progress and Envisioning the Future

And there you have it – the beginning of my home renovation journey! Even with just two rooms seeing significant improvements, the transformation is palpable. Walking into my house now, compared to even a month ago, brings a profound sense of satisfaction. It feels cleaner, brighter, and infinitely more welcoming. The impact of a few coats of paint and some strategic appliance upgrades is truly remarkable, leaving me incredibly excited for the next chapter of projects. This is just the start of creating the home I’ve always envisioned.

Thank you for joining me on this adventure. Stay tuned for more updates, challenges, and revelations as I continue to peel back the layers of this 30-year-old house and infuse it with new life!
