This project not only maximized light exposure for my green companions but also added a stunning focal point to my newly designed home office. The Journey to a Brighter Office: From Dining Room to Plant Haven
As many of you might recall from an earlier post detailing our gender-neutral nursery design, our growing family necessitated a significant reshuffle of our living spaces. With the arrival of our little one, my upstairs spare bedroom office needed to be converted into a nursery. Meanwhile, the guest room already served dual functionality as my husband Kyle’s office (a common scenario for many working from home these days), making my office the most practical room to relocate.
The solution? The dining room. It was a space we rarely utilized to its full potential, making it an obvious and excellent candidate for my new home office. This relocation wasn’t just about finding a new desk space; it was an exciting opportunity for a complete design overhaul – a chance I’d never pass up! Embracing change and reinventing spaces is one of my favorite aspects of DIY and home design.
My design journey for the new office began with a bold color block treatment on the walls, adding a modern and artistic flair. But I knew the room needed another signature feature, something truly custom that would bring life and nature indoors: a dedicated display for a multitude of houseplants. The demand for these plans on my social media, especially during Instagram stories where I often share sneak peeks, was overwhelming! Collaboration and Craftsmanship: Bringing the Vision to Life
The most compelling feature of the dining room was its expansive window overlooking the backyard – a perfect canvas for creating a fun, nature-inspired build. This project’s timeline serendipitously aligned with WorkbenchCon 2022, providing an incredible opportunity to collaborate with a fellow DIY enthusiast. My dear friend, Anika from Anika’s DIY Life, joined me to transform this vision into a tangible reality. Her expertise and enthusiasm were invaluable.
Over two productive days, Anika and I tackled both the wall painting and the construction of this unique wall-slash-window feature, meticulously following the plans Kyle and I had developed. You might notice some unfinished walls in the background of a few photos; that’s because the final painting touches, including the crown molding installation, were completed after the conference. But rest assured, every detail was finished to perfection! I often joke about never finishing projects, but this one was an absolute triumph. DIY Window Plant Shelves: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating these custom window plant shelves is a fantastic way to maximize vertical space and bring more greenery into your home. While the full, detailed cut list and material specifications are included in the paid plans, I want to emphasize that this was a custom-built project. This means that precise measurements for widths and lengths will need to be adjusted to perfectly fit your specific window dimensions. This customization is, of course, one of the greatest advantages of DIY – crafting something perfectly tailored to your space!

Project Overview and Preparation
Time needed: Approximately 2 days (though with good planning and a helper, you might finish faster!)
This timeline is based on my experience, which included filming and working through a new design. For a seasoned DIYer, or with the help of a friend, you might shave off some time. Remember, these plant shelves are designed for a custom fit within your window frame, so precise measurements and adjustments to the plans are crucial for a seamless integration into your unique space.

Step 1: Carefully Remove Existing Window Trim
Our project started with the advantage of having detailed plans, which simplified the cutting process significantly. To integrate the new shelves and their supports seamlessly, we first had to address the existing window trim. This involved carefully removing the top and side pieces of the trim. We used a multi-tool equipped with a wood-cutting blade to precisely cut a small section of the chair rail on either side of the window. This created the necessary space for our new built-in window insert. Importantly, the window sill was left intact, as our design was specifically engineered to build around it, preserving its structural integrity and minimizing unnecessary demolition. Always exercise caution when using power tools and wear appropriate safety gear.

Step 2: Cut and Assemble the Robust Shelf Supports
Each shelf support is constructed from two side pieces and four middle pieces, forming the sturdy foundation for the long shelves that will rest on top. Anika, with her masterful use of a Kreg Jig, demonstrated how to attach these pieces using pocket holes, wood glue, a drill, and clamps. We strategically positioned the pocket holes on the top of each middle piece, ensuring they would be completely concealed once the main shelf was placed over them – a clever trick for a clean, professional finish. During this phase, I encountered a minor setback: my initial middle pieces were cut too shallow to accommodate the combined depth of my window sills and shelf widths. This necessitated using L-brackets to provide additional stability. However, I’ve since refined the plans to reflect a deeper support construction, eliminating the need for L-brackets entirely. This experience highlights the iterative nature of DIY – learning and improving with each project! If you’re new to the Kreg Jig, Anika’s excellent course on mastering pocket holes is a resource I highly recommend.

Step 3: Cut and Precisely Insert the Inner Window Wrap
The entire structural integrity of these shelves hinges on the inner window wrap, which fits snugly within the existing window frame. Achieving a perfect, tight fit here is paramount. Therefore, I cannot overstate the importance of measuring the inside dimensions of your window multiple times before making any cuts. A practical tip: cut your pieces slightly longer than your measurements suggest, then make incremental, blade-width cuts on one end until you achieve that ideal, friction-fit. Once the fit is perfect, secure this inner wrap to the wood studs surrounding the window using screws. To maintain a clean aesthetic and hide the screw heads, strategically place them in areas where one of the assembled shelf supports (from Step 2) will eventually be positioned. This ensures a professional and seamless appearance.

Step 4: Enhance with Custom Outer Window Trim
Following the installation of the inner wrap, we moved to the exterior trim. While I opted to keep the bottom sill of my original window intact, I removed the existing trim from the left, right, and top sections. In its place, I added new pieces of wood around the window’s edge, creating an alternative trim that perfectly complemented the new plant shelf structure. This step is crucial for achieving a cohesive, built-in look. When selecting your trim pieces at the store, invest extra time to pick out the straightest, finest quality wood. This foresight will prevent unsightly gaps caused by bowing or twisting wood, ensuring a polished finish. For attachment, I used small brad nails to minimize visible surface marks, creating a clean and subtle fastening.

Step 5: Securely Insert the Assembled Shelf Supports
With the window wrap and trim in place, it was time to install the main shelf supports. Anika and I worked together to install the two end supports first, securing them into the corners/sides of the window wrap. We then carefully measured and centered the middle support, ensuring perfect alignment across the window. This approach makes it easier to achieve symmetrical placement. Each support bracket was then secured with long screws directly into the window frame, ensuring maximum stability. A critical step here is the “wiggle test”: firmly grasp each installed support and try to wiggle it. If you detect any movement, add more screws, tighten existing ones further, or consider reinforcing with additional L-brackets (though with the updated plans, this should be less likely). Ensuring these supports are rock-solid is vital for the safety and longevity of your plant display.

Step 6: Place the Shelves and Arrange Your Plants
This is undoubtedly the most rewarding stage – where your hard work culminates in a beautiful, functional display! I intentionally cut each window shelf to be slightly longer than the window’s width, allowing them to extend aesthetically past the frame on both sides. If your space is more constrained, you may need to trim your shelves shorter to facilitate easy insertion. Alternatively, you could install the shelves concurrently with their supports (as described in Step 4), or even assemble the entire unit as one piece before inserting it, though this method often requires an extra pair of hands for stability during installation. A unique choice I made was not to permanently secure the shelves to their supports. This allows me the flexibility to occasionally flip the wood. Exposure to sunlight can cause one side of the shelves to dry out faster, potentially leading to cupping or warping over time. Flipping them helps distribute this exposure evenly, prolonging their lifespan and maintaining their flat profile. Finally, adorn your new shelves with your favorite planters and pots. I personally love these small, self-watering pots, which are ideal for many of my low-maintenance houseplants, creating a lush, vibrant indoor garden.
