Bringing Ruby Home: A Pivotal Step in Our Vintage Camper Renovation

After a significant wait following Episode 3, I’m absolutely thrilled to share this update, and I promise more frequent installments are on the way! This episode marks a truly pivotal moment for Ruby: she finally made it home! For an intense and productive 36 hours, our vintage travel trailer proudly sat in our driveway, allowing us to tackle an incredible amount of work. Our main objectives for this crucial visit were a comprehensive exterior pressure wash and an initial exploration into aluminum polishes to see if that iconic, mirror-like shine was even attainable. And I’m delighted to report: it absolutely is!

You definitely won’t want to miss the exciting sneak peek of the transformation captured in today’s video. While the static images are compelling (and I know I say that every time!), there’s an incredibly satisfying moment at the video’s conclusion that I’m eager to showcase – one that I hope will inspire as much awe in you as it does in me!

Navigating the Common Challenges of a Vintage RV Restoration Project

In our last update, we successfully relocated Ruby from its deep woods location in Americus, GA, to a rental lot significantly closer to our home. This reduced our daunting 4+ hour drive to a much more manageable 20 minutes. While solving the distance problem was a huge win, this new arrangement introduced its own set of practical challenges, many of which are typical for any extensive DIY camper renovation:

  • Logistical Limitations of Towing: We currently don’t own a truck powerful enough to tow Ruby on a regular basis (a future post will delve into this!). This means we constantly face a dilemma: work on the trailer at the lot (which lacks essential power and water hookups) or rent/borrow a suitable truck to move it to a location that provides these utilities.
  • Dependence on External Utilities: Any task requiring an electrical outlet or a water hose automatically necessitates towing Ruby to our house or another equipped site. Otherwise, we are confined to using battery-operated tools, which, while convenient, aren’t always sufficient for the heavy-duty demands of a full restoration.
  • The Cost and Planning of Transport: The process of renting or borrowing a truck is both time-consuming and financially taxing. Consequently, every move Ruby makes requires meticulous planning and a substantial, fully dedicated block of time to ensure we maximize the effort and cost involved.
  • Ongoing DMV and Registration Headaches: We’re still actively resolving lingering DMV and tag issues. An unfortunate error in paperwork by a police officer means we have at least one more trip to the DMV ahead of us before we feel entirely confident in towing Ruby to various locations without concern.
  • Exploring Portable Power Solutions: We’ve received several suggestions on social media to invest in a power inverter, which could draw power from our car battery. This is a purchase we’re carefully researching, as certain expenditures in a restoration project like this are meant to be long-term investments. We’re committed to making a quality choice rather than cutting corners.

Earlier this year, we had some success with handwashing Ruby’s aluminum exterior. However, the obvious truth (and frequent feedback from our followers!) was that a pressure washer would be significantly faster and more efficient. Even without one available back in Americus, we knew a proper, deep pressure wash was an indispensable final step before attempting any further exterior work, particularly polishing. To achieve that brilliant aluminum polish, every last speck of grime and oxidation simply has to be meticulously removed!

The Big Day: Pressure Washing Ruby’s Exterior for Restoration

Not long ago, we carved out an entire weekend specifically for this crucial task. Our strategic decision was to bring Ruby to the Ugly Duckling House (UDH) for maximum ease and access to utilities. After securing a rented truck and carefully hooking up the camper (a process we’re still mastering, as the video humorously shows!), we finally had her home in our driveway. The excitement was absolutely undeniable, as you can clearly see from the photo below!

My sheer excitement was palpable the moment Ruby finally arrived in our driveway!

Why can’t Ruby be parked at our house permanently?

This is a very common and understandable question. While I don’t contend with an HOA and generally have a lot of freedom for DIY improvements on my property (a perk I’ve certainly enjoyed!), our county imposes strict regulations regarding the permanent parking of recreational vehicles like Ruby. For instance, it would require a dedicated gravel or paved spot in the backyard. Creating such an area, complete with proper gate access, would unfortunately mean dismantling several structures I’ve already painstakingly built. Therefore, the monthly cost of renting an off-site space, while not ideal, currently remains the most practical and legally compliant solution.

We’ve enjoyed a long-standing and proud partnership with Stihl for our outdoor equipment needs. This year, I enthusiastically enhanced our arsenal by adding their RB 200 Easy Start Pressure Washer. My prior experience with pressure washers was limited to a memorable incident years ago where my dad and I managed to break one (the brand escapes me, thankfully!), so I was truly determined to learn the ropes of this machine and maximize its potential for Ruby’s revival.

Day one of Ruby’s visit was primarily consumed by the logistics of the journey itself – navigating back roads to get her home safely, which took longer than anticipated. However, day two was entirely dedicated to mastering the power washer. Once we got the hang of the STIHL RB 200, the cleaning process proceeded with remarkable speed and efficiency! Its user-friendly design and robust performance made quick work of decades of accumulated dirt and oxidation.

Essential Information About the STIHL RB 200 Easy Start Pressure Washer

  • Variable Nozzles for Diverse Tasks: The STIHL RB 200 comes equipped with three distinct spray nozzles: 65, 25, and 15 degrees. It’s crucial to remember that the narrower the angle of the spray, the more concentrated and powerful the pressure. The 65-degree nozzle provides a wider, lower-pressure spray, ideal for general rinsing or applying cleaning solutions, while the narrower options are for more stubborn dirt.
  • Integrated Detergent Injection System: A highly convenient feature is the machine’s integrated tube that connects directly to the soap container. This system automatically feeds and mixes the detergent with the water, completely eliminating the need for tedious pre-dilution. Always verify that your chosen cleaning solution is compatible with a direct-feed system for optimal results and safety.
  • Critical Motor Protection: To prevent damage and ensure longevity, it’s imperative to maintain a constant flow of water through the pressure washer when it’s running. We diligently ensured not to exceed the recommended 1-2 minutes of idling without actively spraying. If we needed to pause for any reason, we would simply turn the machine off to protect the motor.

How to Safely Pressure Wash a Vintage Aluminum Travel Trailer: A Step-by-Step Guide

Estimated Time Needed: Approximately 2 hours (for a full exterior clean)

Pressure washing a vintage camper, especially one with delicate aluminum panels like our Spartan Manor, demands a careful and systematic approach to prevent any damage. It is always best to work in small, manageable sections, commencing from the roof and meticulously working your way down. Prior to beginning, it is absolutely crucial to perform a pressure test on an inconspicuous area to ensure the spray setting will not harm the aluminum surface.

  1. Step 1: Proper Setup of the Pressure Washer

Connecting your pressure washer is a straightforward process. You’ll typically have two main hoses: one connecting your outdoor faucet to the pressure washer’s water inlet, and another connecting the pressure washer’s high-pressure outlet to the spray handle. Ensure that all connections are tightly secured to prevent leaks and maintain optimal pressure. Before starting the machine, always confirm that your water source is fully open.

Connecting the water supply and high-pressure hose to prepare the unit for operation.
  2. Step 2: Integrating the Cleaning Detergent

With the STIHL RB 200’s efficient direct-feed system, the convenience of not having to pre-mix your cleaning solution is a huge advantage. Simply open the bottle of your chosen pressure washer-safe soap and insert the end of the machine’s integrated soap tube directly into the detergent. We discovered that the tube can sometimes float, so we attached a small copper weight to its end to ensure it stayed submerged at the bottom of the bottle, maximizing every drop of soap.

  3. Step 3: Apply Soap and Allow it to Dwell

Utilizing the low-pressure (65-degree) nozzle, evenly spray the cleaning solution across the camper in manageable sections. Ensure thorough coverage, allowing the soap to cling to and penetrate the dirt and grime. For the specific soap we used, a dwell time of just 5 minutes was sufficient to effectively loosen the accumulated dirt. It’s important to monitor the surface and avoid letting the soap dry, especially on warm or sunny days.

Evenly applying the cleaning solution to a section of the trailer’s exterior.
  4. Step 4: Thoroughly Rinse the Camper

Once the detergent has had adequate time to work, switch to a higher-pressure nozzle (such as the 25-degree or even 15-degree, always testing on an inconspicuous area first to gauge its effect on the vintage aluminum). Begin rinsing from the top of each section and systematically work your way downwards. This ensures that all dislodged dirt and soap residue are completely washed away, preventing streaks. For proper storage and to ensure no soap remains in the machine’s internal tubing, we recommend placing the end of the soap tube into a clear container of clean water and running the machine until the water spraying out is completely clear. This also streamlines future use!

That’s truly all there is to achieving a remarkably clean exterior! Using a pressure washer is one of those deeply satisfying experiences; it’s a tool that invariably makes me feel a bit silly for having waited so long to incorporate it into my DIY projects. There’s a particular kind of magic in watching layers of dirt and grime literally melt away, instantly transforming surfaces. It genuinely feels like wielding a powerful wand – albeit one that guarantees you and everything in its vicinity will get soaked! I’m already brimming with ideas for future pressure washing projects around our house, including the deck, concrete driveway, and front porch. I would love to hear your suggestions too! I’ll be updating this post with a comprehensive list of project ideas based on your comments, as the versatility of this machine is truly astounding.

With the pressure washing complete, Ruby’s exterior was left squeaky clean – a pristine canvas from the wheels all the way up to its roof!

A pristine roof, a clear indication of a successful deep clean.

A critical word of caution: Attempting to spray the roof of a tall trailer with a power washer while standing on a ladder is highly dangerous and can very easily cause you to lose balance. Always exercise extreme caution and explore safer alternatives for reaching high areas, prioritizing your safety above all else.

The Quest for Shine: Testing Aluminum Polishes for a Vintage RV Exterior

With Ruby unexpectedly squeaky clean and our pressure washing tasks completed ahead of schedule, we seized the golden opportunity. Before returning the camper to its storage lot, we decided to immediately dive into testing various aluminum polishes. Our trip to the local auto parts store yielded several creams and sprays. However, we quickly learned an important distinction: many sprays marketed for aluminum, particularly on tires, are specifically designed for coated aluminum only. This significantly narrowed our options for Ruby’s bare, vintage aluminum, leaving us with two primary contenders to test:

  • Mother’s Mag & Aluminum Polish
  • Blue Magic Metal Polish Cream

Both products were affordably priced at under $10, and while the market offers more specialized and high-end polishes, these were the best readily available options for our initial experiment. Our expectations were quite modest; we genuinely hoped for little more than a slight reduction in the pervasive haze on the aluminum. What we achieved, however, was nothing short of astonishing.

Important Sidenote: Always wear protective gloves when applying polishes! This simple step ensures your safety and prevents potential skin irritation from the compounds.

Both polishes follow a similar application protocol: you apply the product, rub it onto the surface, allow it to “work” until it typically turns black (an indication of it lifting oxidation and grime), and then meticulously wipe it off in a circular motion with a clean, soft cloth. To our utter astonishment, we achieved a genuine, undeniable reflection! Beyond simply creating a shine, both polishes also proved incredibly effective at removing stubborn rust streaks that had marred the aluminum panels for decades. We were absolutely thrilled with these immediate and dramatic results.

The incredible, mirror-like reflection we achieved with just a simple polish test – a truly motivating sight!

Comparing the Aluminum Polishes: Mother’s vs. Blue Magic

In terms of raw performance and the quality of the shine produced, both Mother’s Mag & Aluminum Polish and Blue Magic Metal Polish Cream delivered remarkably similar, impressive results. The primary differentiating factor we observed was the scent. Blue Magic possesses a very distinct, strong metallic odor that we found quite potent, even when working outdoors in the open air. This noticeable fragrance has led us to prefer Mother’s polish for subsequent applications, finding it a significantly more pleasant experience overall.

It’s crucial to clarify that this initial polishing effort is not the final, mirror-like finish we ultimately envision for Ruby. This phase was more of an exploratory experiment to answer the question: “How good can we get this looking with minimal immediate cost and effort?” We fully understand that achieving an ultimate, show-quality shine will require a more elaborate, multi-step polishing kit and process down the line. This entire vintage RV restoration is a continuous learning curve, and each step provides new insights and refines our techniques. We are also simultaneously working on restoring Ruby’s windows with a specialized plastic renewal kit, details of which I’ll be sharing in an upcoming update!

Polishing Techniques and Future Tool Upgrades for Vintage RVs

After successfully testing a few small spots by hand, our ambition naturally grew. We initially intended to polish an entire panel using Kyle’s dad’s old polisher, which we had a stroke of luck discovering amongst a box of older tools found inside the camper. However, we quickly encountered a significant hurdle: we possessed only one buffing bonnet (the fluffy white cover), and it was likely as aged as the tool itself. Its inefficiency meant we quickly reverted to manual hand polishing for the remainder of our test sections, realizing the bonnet simply wasn’t up to the task.

Kyle’s dad’s vintage polisher, a potentially helpful find, but clearly in need of new buffing bonnets.

While manual polishing proved effective in the test areas, it was undeniably an intense arm workout! It immediately became clear that hand-polishing the entire surface of the Spartan Manor would be an incredibly arduous, if not nearly impossible, feat for our long-term plan. We promptly made a mental note (which swiftly transformed into an online order) to acquire a fresh supply of buffing bonnets and, crucially, to invest in a more modern, battery-powered polisher. I’m genuinely excited to share updates on our new polishing tools and the refined techniques we’ll employ in the very next installment of Ruby’s Revival!

The Potential: Looking Ahead to Ruby’s Brilliant Future Shine

Our precious weekend with Ruby in the driveway, while incredibly productive, flew by far too quickly. We had to swiftly pack up our progress and return the camper to its storage location, ensuring we could return the rented truck the following morning. But oh, that undeniable shine! I found myself repeatedly petting and staring at the gleaming aluminum. The sheer potential that newfound glimmer hinted at was, and still is, incredibly motivating. It truly is astonishing what an unexpected leap forward in a challenging project can do for your morale and enthusiasm, isn’t it?

The unmistakable shine, a compelling glimpse into Ruby’s polished future, fills us with renewed determination.

When aspects of a project surpass your expectations, my best advice is always to fully embrace that surge of energy and motivation. It’s precisely this positive momentum that will powerfully carry you through the inevitable tough, painstaking slogs that lie ahead – such as the daunting task of polishing literally every other panel of this vintage RV after that initial, exciting test spot!

Motivating view of the cleaned and partially polished vintage trailer
This significant progress provides essential fuel for our determination as we navigate the long restoration journey ahead.

Although our productive weekend came to an end, it left us profoundly motivated. It immediately spurred me to purchase a brand-new polisher and a generous supply of additional bonnets. More importantly, it helped us formulate a strategic game plan for more frequent, incremental visits to the camper throughout the week. The core idea is simple: achieve steady, panel-by-panel progress by committing to visiting Ruby once or twice each week until the extensive polishing is fully complete. I’m absolutely delighted to report that we’ve been incredibly diligent in upholding this commitment, and you might have even caught some exciting sneak peeks on our Instagram! Expect many more detailed updates before the year draws to a close.
