A Toast to the Enduring Facade

As the calendar pages turn, I find myself standing on the precipice of a significant milestone next week: my thirtieth birthday. This marks the final year of my twenties, a decade often associated with youthful exuberance and boundless energy, yet I confess, the prospect of getting older doesn’t fill me with the same anticipation. It might be perceived as shallow or even short-sighted, but the truth is, I struggle with the visible signs of aging. I often find myself editing photos, wishing away tired eyes or subtle lines, a constant internal battle against the march of time. I know, intellectually, that much of it is mind over matter, a mental hurdle I haven’t quite cleared in recent years.

Ironically, this sentiment hit me differently the other day when I referred to my “old” house, only to realize it’s merely two years my senior. This humorous juxtaposition served as a poignant reminder. While I may not be able to stop time, I certainly can exert control over how I maintain myself and my surroundings. Thankfully, my skincare routine is far more diligent than the previous owner’s exterior house maintenance, or I might be displaying just as much wear and tear as its façade. This thought sparked a new perspective, transforming a moment of self-reflection into a pragmatic approach to both personal well-being and home improvement.

But enough with the existential musings! This isn’t meant to be a somber pre-birthday introspection. In fact, quite the opposite. I’m here to share a rather unconventional birthday wish, one that truly reflects my priorities as a dedicated homeowner and DIY enthusiast. For my upcoming birthday, I’ve asked my family for the most valuable gift imaginable: their manual labor. Yes, you heard that right – I’m requesting a collective effort to tackle some long-standing exterior projects, turning celebration into productive collaboration. It’s a testament to the idea that sometimes, the best gifts aren’t bought, but built, together.

Transforming the Exterior: A Birthday Wishlist of Home Projects

For many DIY homeowners, the journey of transforming a house into a dream home is a continuous one, often filled with both triumphs and challenges. My own “ugly duckling” house has been a labor of love, but certain projects require more than just enthusiasm; they demand extra hands, specialized skills, or simply the strength that a 5’2″ individual might lack. This year, my birthday offers the perfect catalyst to rally support for three key exterior endeavors that will not only enhance my home’s curb appeal but also significantly improve my quality of life.

Exterior Project #1: Conquering the High-Reach Exterior Trim

Completing the exterior trim has proven to be one of the most persistent and physically demanding challenges of my DIY journey. Just over a year ago, with the invaluable help of my Dad and a kind neighbor, we managed to paint the main body of the house. Since then, the task of meticulously finishing the trim work has fallen squarely on my shoulders. However, as someone of modest stature, maneuvering heavy, unwieldy ladders against the house’s exterior presents a unique set of difficulties, particularly when aiming for those hard-to-reach areas.

I own an excellent extendable ladder, which I still love and frequently use for various projects. Its versatility and stability are commendable, but it only extends to a maximum of 12 feet. This height is sufficient for many tasks, but it regrettably falls short of reaching the absolute highest points required to complete the intricate trim work around the eaves and peaks of the second story. To access these critical areas, I possess a much longer and significantly heavier ladder, one that can indeed reach the very top of the house.

However, employing this larger ladder introduces a considerable safety concern. My neighborhood features homes situated relatively close to one another. If, by some misstep or loss of control – a distinct possibility given my lower center of gravity – the ladder were to swing outwards, there’s a significant risk of it impacting and potentially damaging a neighbor’s property. This is a liability I’m simply unwilling to bear for the sake of a paint job. The visual impact of unfinished trim, while frustrating, pales in comparison to the potential for property damage or injury. Therefore, assistance in safely positioning and securing this longer ladder is paramount and sits at the very top of my birthday wishlist. Once the ladder is safely in place, I have no qualms about ascending it and meticulously applying the paint myself; it’s the initial struggle of getting the ladder safely to the wall that requires an extra pair of strong, steady hands.

Completing this exterior trim is more than just an aesthetic upgrade; it’s about protecting the structural integrity of the house from the elements and achieving a polished, finished look that significantly boosts curb appeal. A uniform exterior not only looks better but also contributes to the overall perceived value of the home. With this task checked off, the entire exterior of my home will finally present a cohesive and well-maintained appearance, something I’ve been striving for since moving in. The satisfaction of driving up to a fully painted and trimmed house will be a birthday gift in itself.

Exterior project #2: Revitalizing the Brick Border and Cultivating Phlox

Another crucial item on my birthday project list is the significant spruce-up of the right side of the house. Last year, in an effort to regain control over wildly overgrown bushes, I undertook what I affectionately (or perhaps not-so-affectionately) termed a “hack job.” While it was a marked improvement from the untamed jungle that existed before, the bare patches left exposed over the winter months unfortunately became fertile ground for tenacious weeds. Now, these areas look just as scraggly, if not more so, than they did initially, creating an unkempt and uninviting appearance.

On the bright side, many of these weeds are relatively easy to remove by hand – with the notable exception of the remnants of that notoriously hard-to-kill bamboo. Moreover, all the established bushes are now thriving, vigorously sprouting new leaves and exhibiting a much more controlled growth pattern; they’re simply obscured by the overwhelming presence of weeds. My vision for this area includes replacing the barren ground between these rejuvenated bushes – areas once completely consumed by sprawling branches – with vibrant creeping phlox. This choice will introduce a much-needed splash of color and texture to an otherwise dull and neglected space. (Spoiler alert: The phlox plants have already been purchased and are eagerly awaiting their new home; I simply ran out of energy after a debilitating sneezing fit on Sunday to continue planting!)

The primary assistance I need here involves the decorative brick border that the previous owner installed to delineate the lawn from this planting area. The entire line of bricks is currently quite wonky and uneven, making it difficult to discern (you can just barely make out the scalloped tops in the photo below). This haphazard alignment creates a significant problem when I’m mowing the grass, as the uneven surface often snags the mower blades or makes it impossible to achieve a clean edge. Digging out and meticulously straightening these bricks will not only provide a crisp, clean border but also make future lawn maintenance significantly easier and more efficient. A well-defined garden bed will enhance the overall neatness of the yard, creating a polished look that complements the new phlox plantings.

On a related, albeit frustrating, note, this particular area also seems to be a magnet for neighborhood litter. For reasons I cannot fathom, the garbage collectors in my area are prone to sloppiness, allowing bits of trash to escape their trucks. Invariably, these stray pieces of refuse find their way into this small, somewhat secluded section of my yard. It’s particularly irritating because I know with absolute certainty that it isn’t *my* trash. These are containers and brands I don’t use, indicating they originate from elsewhere in the neighborhood, and yet I’m constantly tasked with cleaning them up. Part of my motivation for tidying up this area and making it visually appealing is a hope that a well-maintained space will be less perceived as an acceptable dumping ground. While I’m not yet ready to lodge a formal complaint with the waste management company, I believe that the less my yard appears neglected, the less others will assume it’s permissible to let their litter accumulate here, perhaps even prompting them to pick up any stray debris they might see.

Exterior Project #3: Building the Backyard Fence for Privacy and Peace

The time has unequivocally arrived to finally bring order and definition to my backyard, and the cornerstone of this transformation begins with a new fence. Specifically, a sturdy, attractive wooden fence. As the existing photograph clearly illustrates, a somewhat dilapidated metal fence currently borders this side of the house. Beyond its unsightly appearance, this metal barrier offers minimal privacy and does little to contain my energetic dog, Charlie. When she ventures into the backyard, she has an unobstructed view of people walking along the street in front of the house. This immediately triggers her protective instincts, leading to incessant barking, which, in turn, inevitably drives *me* to distraction. A new fence isn’t just an aesthetic upgrade; it’s a critical component for both my peace of mind and Charlie’s well-being.

Fortuitously, last year my sister and her husband installed a beautiful wooden fence in their own backyard, and they ended up with a significant surplus of high-quality materials. My ever-helpful Dad assisted them with their installation, then promptly loaded the leftover lumber and supplies into his truck and deposited them in a pile in my backyard last fall, right around the time I was busy with classes. To this very day, those materials remain precisely where they were left, a testament to good intentions awaiting action.

While I am incredibly grateful for these free fencing supplies – a genuine cause for celebration for any budget-conscious DIYer – the inconvenient truth is that this sizable pile of materials is currently quite visible from the street. It detracts from the overall appearance of the property and signals an unfinished project. Therefore, my final and perhaps most ambitious birthday request is for some much-needed assistance in putting these valuable supplies to good use by installing the new wooden fence. Ideally, I would love to be present for the entire installation process, eager to learn every step of building a fence from the ground up. However, a significant portion of my upcoming summer weekends will be dedicated to school commitments, making extended hands-on participation challenging. From a practical standpoint, I would much rather return home one weekend to find the fence completed, rather than waiting for a rare window of opportunity where I could be around to snap progress pictures.

A new wooden fence offers myriad benefits beyond just containment for Charlie. It will provide much-desired privacy from neighboring properties and the street, transforming the backyard into a more secluded and tranquil sanctuary. It will also significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of the outdoor space, creating a more finished and inviting environment for entertaining or simply relaxing. The durable nature of wood, properly treated and maintained, also ensures a long-lasting and robust boundary. This project is a major step towards making the backyard a truly functional and beautiful extension of my home.

The DIY Journey: Embracing Help for Sanity and Success

So there you have it: three distinct exterior projects that I’ve identified as prime candidates for a collaborative effort, tasks where an extra set (or even a third set!) of hands would make a truly monumental difference. While my birthday serves as an excellent impetus to kick-start these endeavors, I’m fully aware that even with help, these projects will likely span several weekends to reach full completion. Are you laughing at the perpetually “in progress” state of my house yet? It’s a common refrain among DIY enthusiasts: the truth of the matter is that in the world of home improvement, every decision you make to work on one specific area inevitably means you are choosing *not* to work on something else that also desperately needs attention. It’s a constant balancing act, a continuous prioritization of tasks.

This dynamic also highlights a crucial aspect of “do-it-yourself” projects: they aren’t always, or exclusively, “just by yourself.” While the spirit of DIY is rooted in self-reliance and learning new skills, there are moments when acknowledging limitations and seeking assistance is not only wise but essential. I suppose if I were stubborn enough to insist on completing every single task entirely solo, I theoretically could. However, considering I’ve been looking at a scraggly, half-finished yard for three years, and am *still* diligently chipping away at interior renovations, I’ve come to a profound realization: accepting a “shortcut” in the form of a little help will go an incredibly long way for my overall sanity and the timely completion of these vital projects. It’s a strategic move to preserve my mental well-being and accelerate my home improvement goals.

That’s not to say that I don’t intend to tackle aspects of each area independently whenever possible. There are numerous preparatory tasks and smaller details I can handle on my own before the cavalry arrives. By diligently completing the groundwork beforehand, I can ensure that the assistance I receive is utilized as efficiently as possible, stretching their valuable time and effort even farther. Stay tuned for upcoming posts detailing some of these solo prep efforts, as some are already underway even as I type this.
