Ready Set Build

Welcome back to the thrilling saga of home transformation – it’s time for another electrifying update on the Dueling DIY staircase competition! If you’re passionate about home improvement, DIY projects, or simply enjoy watching dramatic makeovers unfold, you’re in the right place. We’re on a mission to revitalize our staircase, turning a functional but uninspiring feature into a true focal point of our home. And if this happens to be the only staircase competition you’ve ever followed, consider your lifestyle choices perfectly validated – because this one’s packed with progress, practical tips, and a touch of real-life DIY grit.

Mid-Project Momentum: Significant Strides in Our Staircase & Living Room Makeover

This past week has been a whirlwind of progress, paint, and unexpected helpers. We’ve pushed through major milestones on the stairs, and even embarked on a crucial side project that’s dramatically altering the ambiance of our main living areas. The energy in the house is palpable as the vision for a brighter, bolder interior begins to materialize.

Adding to the excitement, I had a very special visitor swing by, offering an extra set of hands and invaluable moral support:

A Fresh Perspective: Brightening the Living Room and Hallway with Benjamin Moore White Dove

While my main focus is on the staircase, the opportunity to tackle a long-standing interior design challenge presented itself. My wonderful mom arrived eager to contribute, but I was hesitant to involve her directly in the Dueling DIY staircase competition itself, fearing an accidental disqualification (which would be truly pathetic for the host!). So, I enlisted her expertise for a crucial adjacent project: transforming the living room and hallway walls. This literally became a ‘side project’ that perfectly complements our staircase renovation.

Out with the Old: Addressing the “Cavern Effect”

For several years, our living room and hallway have been adorned with a pleasant tan wall color – specifically, Valspar’s Sandy Shell matched to Behr paint. While a lovely hue in its own right, the limited natural light in the living room, combined with this color covering nearly half of our lower floor, created an unfortunate “cavern effect” after dusk. The space often felt darker and smaller than it truly is, lacking the vibrancy I desired. It was time for a change, not just to update the aesthetic, but to fundamentally alter the mood and perceived spaciousness of these key areas. A lighter color, I reasoned, would not only reflect more light but also introduce a beautiful contrast with our existing furniture and flooring, laying a perfect foundation for future pops of accent color.

In with the New: Embracing the Versatility of White Dove

The chosen savior for our dimly lit spaces is none other than Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. This isn’t just any white; it’s a beautifully balanced, warm white with the slightest hint of gray, making it incredibly versatile and inviting. I’ve had great success with White Dove in our primary bathroom, appreciating its ability to create a clean, crisp look without feeling stark or cold. It’s the perfect neutral to uplift the space. Mom, with her meticulous touch, began the transformation by expertly “cutting in” – painting the edges and corners – on the wall directly adjacent to the staircase. This strategic starting point allowed us to immediately visualize the impact of the new color in relation to the main project.

This initial wall served as a crucial trial run, helping me determine if White Dove was indeed the right choice to extend throughout the entire living room and beyond. The immediate contrast between the old tan and the fresh White Dove was striking, confirming that we were heading in the right direction to achieve a lighter, more open feel.

The Main Event: Dramatic Staircase Transformation Takes Shape

With the living room’s brightening project underway, it was time to redirect full attention back to the beating heart of the competition: the stairs themselves. This is where the real drama unfolds, transforming a mundane element into a statement piece. The vision is clear: a striking black and white staircase that exudes modern elegance and timeless appeal.

The Art (and Agony) of Taping: Precision for Professional Results

Let’s be honest: taping is arguably the least glamorous, most tedious part of any painting project. I’ve developed a certain proficiency as a painter largely because I intensely dislike taping, motivating me to achieve cleaner lines freehand. However, for a high-impact project like a staircase, meticulous taping is non-negotiable. The goal is sharp, crisp lines where the white risers meet the black treads, and for that, tape is our best friend. So, with a deep breath and a renewed sense of purpose, I trudged through the painstaking process, ensuring every edge was perfectly masked. It’s the foundation for a truly professional finish.

Carefully taping the stair treads

The Foundation: Gray Primer for Deep Black Treads

Once the taping was complete, it was time for the primer. Applying two coats of a high-quality gray primer served a dual purpose. Firstly, it provides an ideal, uniform base for the subsequent black paint, ensuring excellent adhesion and a smooth finish. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly for a deep color like black, a gray primer significantly enhances the final color’s richness and opacity, requiring fewer coats of the top paint. As the gray settled, I could already begin to visualize the dramatic contrast – the future black treads standing proudly against the pristine white risers and banisters. The anticipation was building.

The First Brushstrokes of Drama: Black Paint on Every Other Tread

The moment of truth arrived as I began applying the first coat of black paint. The transformation was immediate and incredibly satisfying! (A quick note on the paint itself: it’s a fast-drying formula, which is a blessing, and I promise to delve into the specific paints and colors used in a detailed post soon). However, the reality of painting a functional staircase in a busy household meant I couldn’t simply power through all the coats at once. Logistical challenges, primarily involving my beloved dog’s need for outdoor access, necessitated a strategic approach.

Painting every other stair tread black

My solution? Painting every other tread. This ingenious (if slightly slower) method allows half of the stairs to remain accessible, ensuring the dog can come and go without stepping on wet paint. To give the freshly painted treads an extra layer of protection during their critical drying time, I placed boxes at the bottom of the stairs, creating a temporary “no-paw zone.” It’s a delicate dance between progress and practicality, but entirely necessary to keep our furry friend happy and our paint job pristine.

Canine Critiques and Paw Prints of Progress

As expected, the new black steps initially sparked some apprehension in our resident four-legged critic. She approached the dramatically altered staircase with caution, clearly pondering these mysterious dark new surfaces. However, as is often the case with pets during home renovations, her initial wariness eventually gave way to her usual joyful (and sometimes messy) enthusiasm. A charming white paw print on a fresh black tread served as a humorous, albeit slightly frustrating, reminder of her active participation in our DIY journey. It’s a badge of honor, really, a testament to living through the renovation process!

Looking Ahead: The Final Stretch and Sustained Motivation

Beyond an evening dedicated to some hardcore exam studying, my goal for the remainder of the week is to continue the stair painting momentum. This involves a quick clean-up of the treads (thanks to those unavoidable paw prints!) and then tackling the other half of the stairs, ensuring every tread gets its rich, black finish. While there’s still a significant amount of work ahead – including painting the banisters and applying final coats – the visual progress we’ve made so far is incredibly motivating. Seeing the dramatic change with each brushstroke fuels the psyche and reminds me that the stunning finished product is well within reach.
