As the academic year draws to a close, with summer finals looming large, my mind finds itself in a curious state of simultaneous focus and delightful distraction. While textbooks and lecture notes demand my immediate attention, there’s an undeniable buzz of anticipation for an event that truly ignites my passion: the highly anticipated Haven Conference. This isn’t just any gathering; it’s the singular blogging conference I’ll be attending this year, and for very compelling reasons that resonate with anyone juggling a full-time career with a burgeoning passion project.
The decision to commit to just one conference is a strategic one, shaped by the realities of my professional life and personal philosophy. Firstly, despite having an incredibly understanding boss, my full-time job often leaves us understaffed. Securing extended time off for what might be perceived as a “conflicting interest” can be a challenging negotiation. Secondly, the financial investment required for these events is substantial. Beyond the ticket price, there are travel, accommodation, and the opportunity cost of lost work hours, making careful selection paramount. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I thrive in environments where I feel a sense of familiarity and genuine connection. There’s a profound comfort in knowing “where the bar is” – a metaphor for understanding the lay of the land, recognizing faces, and feeling empowered to engage in authentic, impactful networking rather than simply stumbling through unfamiliar territory.
Navigating the Haven Conference: From Awkward Beginnings to Confident Connections
For those who might be new to this blog or simply enjoy a good laugh at my expense (and honestly, who can blame you?), my initial foray into the Haven Conference experience was, to put it mildly, a masterclass in awkwardness. You can revisit the rather cringeworthy recap of my first year here. The condensed version? I was utterly starstruck, overwhelmed by the presence of so many industry luminaries, and suffered a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease. It was a valuable, albeit humbling, learning experience that underscored the importance of preparation and a healthy dose of self-awareness.
This year, however, I’m approaching the conference with a newfound sense of preparedness and strategic intent. One key decision was to stay at the conference hotel with a roommate, ensuring I wouldn’t miss out on the invaluable after-hours schmoozing. These informal gatherings, often extending late into the night, are where some of the most genuine connections are forged – conversations about shared experiences, blogging challenges, and undoubtedly, a few discussions about men and spirits! My fantastic roommate for this year is Pamela from PB&J Stories. Her suggestion that we both equip ourselves with one of these ingenious “Vino2Go” cups immediately confirmed my excellent choice in rooming partners. Naturally, I opted for the “Brew2Go” beer version, but we’re certainly sharing the same spirit of conviviality (pun absolutely intended!). It’s worth clarifying, despite my frequent mentions of enjoying a good beer, I’m far from my college-era consumption habits. I’m a self-proclaimed lightweight, preferring to savor quality brews at a much more leisurely pace. These small details, like a fun, branded cup, often serve as excellent icebreakers and conversation starters, embodying the relaxed yet purposeful atmosphere of the conference.
Beyond the Screen: The Tangible Power of Business Cards
The immediate catalyst for sharing all this excitement today, rather than next week, is the arrival of my much-anticipated business cards. Delivered last night from Moo.com (an affiliate partner whose products I genuinely adore!), a staggering 700 cards arrived, ready to make their debut. Yes, you read that right – seven hundred business cards, meticulously designed for two distinct purposes.
The first batch consists of 400 standard-sized cards, destined for bloggers and vendors I’ll encounter at the conference on behalf of The Ugly Duckling House. What truly amused and slightly unnerved me upon opening the box was their unique presentation: 400 iterations of my face, peering out from their neatly stacked rows. It’s a bit freaky, certainly humbling, and undeniably memorable. This year, I consciously decided to feature my face prominently on the cards. In an industry where online personas can sometimes obscure real-life recognition, I wanted to ensure that attendees could easily put a face to the blog name. This strategic choice also serves a humorous purpose, perhaps pre-empting any repeat instances of being affectionately (or awkwardly) dubbed “The Ugly Girl” – a title I’m perfectly fine with, now that I’m better prepared!

A business card, even in our increasingly digital world, remains a powerful networking tool. It’s a tangible representation of your brand, a physical reminder of a connection made, and an extension of your professional identity. For a blog like The Ugly Duckling House, which is so deeply rooted in personal projects and a unique voice, having a business card that truly captures that essence is paramount. The bold choice of featuring my likeness is a deliberate effort to create an instant, personal connection, setting the stage for more meaningful conversations at the conference and beyond. It’s about building brand recognition not just for the blog, but for the person behind it.

Launching a Dream: Sweet Theory Designs Takes Flight
The second batch of cards comprises 300 minicards, representing my exciting new venture: Sweet Theory Designs. This “budding little side business” has been simmering for a while, mentioned in passing here and there, but now it’s truly taking shape. Over the past three years, I’ve immersed myself in the intricate world of blog design, tirelessly teaching myself to code and master platforms like Blogger and WordPress. This journey has evolved from simply designing my own space to genuinely enjoying the process of teaching others, leading to plans for one-on-one coaching sessions.
With a handful of satisfied clients already under my belt, the next significant hurdle was creating a logo – a surprisingly arduous task when it’s for yourself. The perfectionist in me, coupled with the knowledge of endless design possibilities, made it a constant battle of tweaking and refining. But it’s finally done, and these minicards are the physical manifestation of this leap of faith. I’m seizing this opportunity at the conference to give Sweet Theory Designs a real shot, handing out these cards to potential clients and collaborators, eager to see where this path will lead. It’s a heady mix of excitement and genuine apprehension. The thrill of pursuing something I deeply love is undeniable, yet it’s tempered by the very real fear that others might not embrace it or take it seriously. Adding to the pressure, the new website isn’t quite complete, but I’ll be dedicating this weekend to bringing it to fruition, hopeful it will be ready just in time.
The Power of Community: Celebrating Shared Success
Speaking of new, exciting, and perhaps slightly terrifying endeavors, it’s a powerful reminder that the blogging world thrives on community and mutual support. One of the most cherished aspects of having this blog is the incredible network of friendship and encouragement I receive from fellow bloggers, not to mention the unwavering support from all of you, my amazing readers – you truly ROCK, no exaggeration, I adore you all. In that spirit of camaraderie, I couldn’t conclude without extending a heartfelt shout-out to my wonderful friends at East Coast Creative.
These two phenomenal blogging divas have poured their heart and soul into countless amazing home transformations, showcasing their immense talent and dedication. Their hard work culminated in a truly remarkable milestone earlier this month when they premiered on television with their very own show, aptly titled Knock It Off. Their journey from successful bloggers to television stars is not just a personal triumph for them but an inspiring testament to the incredible potential within the blogging community. They are incredibly deserving of this tremendous success, and their show is a must-watch for anyone interested in creative design and budget-friendly makeovers. If you haven’t had the chance to experience their magic yet, I highly recommend you watch the episodes online, as I frequently do. And to the ladies of East Coast Creative, if you somehow manage to squeeze this into your undoubtedly busy schedules, my warmest congratulations to you both!

The energy surrounding the Haven Conference, the launch of Sweet Theory Designs, and the inspiring success of friends like East Coast Creative all underscore a vital truth about the creative journey: it’s a blend of personal passion, diligent work, strategic planning, and the unwavering support of a community. As I navigate my final exams and prepare for the bustling days of the conference, I carry with me not just business cards, but also a renewed sense of purpose and immense gratitude for the vibrant world of blogging that allows such dreams to take flight.
