Alongside my incredible southern sweetheart, I chronicle our adventures as first-time homeowners tackling DIY projects over at Dream Home DIY. I’m 25 years old, and having grown up as a military brat, the concept of a “forever home” holds a profound meaning for me, one that I’m eager to share with you.

Our exciting journey commenced in the summer of 2010, specifically in June, when we sealed the deal on our charming two-story Colonial house. It was a momentous occasion, a significant step towards a dream we had long cherished. This isn’t just a starter house to us; it’s the canvas upon which we plan to paint the landscape of our lives. We envision transforming every corner, every room, and every inch of this property into the quintessential “forever home” we’ve always dreamed of.

This house, in its modest beginnings, has no idea what exciting transformations and heartfelt memories await it! Our unwavering intention is to infuse every fiber of its being with a lifetime of shared moments, laughter, and love. It’s destined to be the place where we grow old together, where our family blossoms, and where countless stories will unfold within its walls. More than just a structure, it’s the foundation for our future, a sanctuary filled with the warmth of a life well-lived.

My childhood was a testament to constant change and new horizons. With my father serving a distinguished 25-year career in the military, our family moved frequently across the United States. From the vibrant shores of Hawaii to the sunny expanse of California, then to the historic charm of Virginia, and back again to Hawaii – my memories are scattered like beautiful postcards across this diverse country. While each move brought new experiences and broadened my perspective, it also instilled a deep longing for a place to truly call home.

Although the spirit of a nomad still gently nudges within me, there’s an undeniable feeling of “rightness” in the decision to plant deep roots within a community. And what better place to do so than in a welcoming, charming Southern community? Here, life moves at a different pace, and human connections are cherished. It’s a place where genuine warmth radiates, where neighbors wave at strangers on the street, and where a victory by the hometown high school football team can set a joyous, unified mood for the entire Fall season. This sense of belonging, of shared pride and simple courtesies, is precisely what we craved.

Beyond the immediate comforts and community spirit, there’s a deeply personal reason driving this desire for a permanent home. I’ve always envisioned a place where my future children could return to, years down the line, and smile with that sweet grin of remembrance as they recall all the hidden memories those four walls would contain. A stable, loving home base, rich with family history, is a legacy I am determined to create. This vision fuels every hammer swing, every paint stroke, and every thoughtful decision we make in our renovation journey.

With our vision firmly in mind, we hit the ground running! We understand that transforming a starter house into a dream home is not an overnight task. Our grand ideas may realistically take years to accomplish, demanding patience, perseverance, and a constant learning curve. But isn’t that the beauty of it? A house is truly never “complete,” is it? It’s a living, evolving space that reflects the lives within it, constantly adapting and improving.

At this very moment, we are knee-deep in a significant living room remodel. Our primary goal here is to redefine the space, meticulously creating distinct dining room and living areas within what was once a single, undifferentiated zone. This involves not only careful planning but also the hands-on construction of new architectural features, including an impressive in-progress archway. This archway isn’t just a structural element; it’s designed to provide a graceful transition between the two functional spaces, adding character and an open yet defined feel. The process has involved everything from framing new walls to tackling drywall, a task that has truly tested our novice DIY skills but also rewarded us with immense satisfaction.

Another major project currently underway is a much-needed front porch revamp. The porch is the first impression our home makes, and we wanted it to exude warmth and curb appeal. This transformation involves extensive preparation, from thorough cleaning and sanding to the meticulous application of new paint and stain. We’ve chosen colors and finishes that complement the Colonial architecture, aiming for a classic yet fresh look that truly welcomes guests. The process of stripping away old layers and applying fresh coats has been transformative, not just for the porch itself, but for our confidence as DIYers. It’s amazing what a little elbow grease and the right products can do to rejuvenate a space and enhance a home’s exterior appeal.

These current projects are just the beginning; we have more DIY adventures planned than you can shake a stick at! On the horizon, our blueprint for the future is even grander and more exhilarating. We envision a fabulous kitchen remodel, transforming it into the heart of our home with modern functionality and timeless style. This will likely involve a complete overhaul – new cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and perhaps even reconfiguring the layout to create a more open-concept space perfect for entertaining and daily family life.

The primary bedroom and bathroom are also slated for a significant reconfiguration. We dream of creating a serene, spa-like retreat, a true sanctuary where we can unwind. This might involve expanding the bathroom, incorporating luxurious fixtures, and optimizing the bedroom layout for both comfort and aesthetics. Beyond the interior, our plans include constructing new decks, perfect for outdoor living and entertaining, which will seamlessly connect our indoor and outdoor spaces. Landscaping will also play a crucial role, transforming our yard into a beautiful and functional extension of our home.

And there’s more! Extensive painting projects will continually refresh and update every room. We’re eager to dive into furniture construction and re-facing, adding personalized touches and handcrafted charm throughout the house. In the longer term, we even envision future additions to accommodate our growing family and evolving needs, alongside the construction of garages for practical storage and vehicle shelter. Each of these projects, no matter how big or small, represents a step closer to our ultimate goal.

Our philosophy is simple: Day by day. Project by project. Remodel by remodel. As two novice DIYers, we are learning, growing, and building our skills with every challenge we face. We’ve embraced the journey, understanding that the process itself is as rewarding as the finished product. This methodical approach ensures that we tackle each task with care, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality, even as we navigate the inevitable surprises that come with home renovation.

We are well on our way to achieving the most important goal of all: to “Turn Our Starter Home Into Our Dream Home…One DIY at a Time.” This isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s the guiding principle of our entire endeavor. It encapsulates the patience, dedication, and sheer joy we find in slowly, deliberately, and lovingly crafting the home of our dreams.
