Behind the Blog: Life Updates & Upcoming DIY Adventures

Life behind the blog has been a whirlwind of activity lately, making the past few months (April, May, June, and likely July!) exceptionally busy and incredibly exciting. As many of you know, our creative projects often intertwine with major life events, and this season is no exception.

Settling into a New Home: A Grand Family Adventure

First and foremost, we’ve found our new home! This is a significant milestone for our family, marking the beginning of a huge transition. The coming summer months will be largely dedicated to preparing for this big move. While it means a period of intense planning, packing, and a little bit of stress, it’s also filled with immense joy and anticipation for the new memories we’ll create. You can catch a sneak peek at our new house here. We truly appreciate all your good vibes and shared excitement as we embark on this new chapter.

Reviving Ruby’s Revival: Our Vintage Camper Renovation

Simultaneously, our moving plans have put one of our biggest ongoing side projects, “Ruby’s Revival,” into overdrive. For those unfamiliar, Ruby’s Revival is our cherished 1946 vintage camper renovation project. Each spring, I dedicate several weeks to bringing this classic beauty back to life. With a 478-mile journey to our new property on the horizon, the pressure is on to get Ruby into “road-ready” and aesthetically pleasing shape. This means I’m currently throwing myself wholeheartedly into a flurry of DIY projects, maximizing every spare moment and inch of our current rental space. It’s certainly a “money pit” project, demanding both time and resources, but the passion for transforming this vintage gem continues to fuel every sticky, grimy, and ultimately rewarding part of the process.

Staying Consistent: Your Monthly Cross Stitch Patterns

Amidst all these personal transitions, rest assured that the creative flow here at the blog continues! You might notice that some posts are backdated (hello, May!), a direct result of these significant life changes. However, I want to emphasize that all of our 2023 cross stitch patterns are pre-created and ready for release. Our system ensures that a new pattern goes live in the free library on the first of each month, regardless of when the accompanying blog post is published.

So, if you’re an existing subscriber and don’t see the monthly pattern post immediately, don’t worry! You can always use the special password provided in your subscriber emails to log into the Cross Stitch Patterns Library and grab the latest design. For example, June’s pattern will be available within the first day or two of the month, even if the blog post detailing it is still in the works.

A Backlog of DIY: More Exciting Content on the Way

With the recent focus on moving and Ruby’s Revival, a fantastic backlog of other DIY content has accumulated. I’ve been diligently working on a basement remodel over the past few months, which promises to be a treasure trove of tips and inspiration. Additionally, I’ve completely restructured the house tour page in anticipation of showcasing more subdivided spaces and projects in our new home. There’s a wealth of creative content heading your way, so stay tuned!

Introducing the Spotted Moth Cross Stitch Pattern: April’s Free Design

Alrighty, with all the life updates out of the way, let’s dive into April’s captivating free pattern: the Spotted Moth! I was immediately drawn to its simple yet striking aesthetic, making it a perfect candidate for translation into a charming cross stitch design. The original illustration’s color block, paint-by-numbers style aesthetic translates beautifully into a cross stitch, offering a relaxing and satisfying project for stitchers of all levels.

Essential Cross Stitch Supplies for Every Enthusiast

To embark on your cross stitch journey or to enhance your current projects, having the right tools is paramount. Here’s a curated list of frequently used supplies that will make your stitching experience smooth and enjoyable. These are the tried-and-true items I rely on for all my projects.

  • Embroidery Hoops: Essential for holding your fabric taut, ensuring even stitches and preventing puckering. Available in various sizes and materials like wood or plastic.
  • Needles: Specifically, tapestry needles with blunt tips are ideal for cross stitch as they glide through the fabric weave without splitting threads. Different sizes are available for various fabric counts.
  • DMC Embroidery Floss: The gold standard for cross stitch threads, known for its vast color range, durability, and vibrant sheen. Each skein is comprised of six strands, which you typically separate for stitching.
  • Aida Cloth: The foundation of your project, Aida cloth is a popular woven fabric with a clear, open weave that makes counting and stitching squares easy. It comes in various “counts” (stitches per inch).
  • Needle Minder: A magnetic accessory that keeps your needle safe and secure when you take a break, preventing it from getting lost in your fabric or falling on the floor. You can even DIY your own!
  • Threader: A handy little tool that simplifies the often-frustrating task of getting floss through the eye of a needle, especially helpful for those with vision challenges or less nimble fingers.
  • Thimble: Protects your finger from repeated needle pokes, especially useful when working with thicker fabrics or pushing the needle through tightly woven areas.
  • Magnifying Glass: Indispensable for working on higher count fabrics or for stitchers who need a little extra help seeing the small squares and holes clearly.
  • Stitch Scissors: Small, sharp scissors designed for precision cutting of embroidery floss, essential for neat work.
