Elevate Your Space: Discover the Charm of DIY Hanging Fabric Hoop Decor

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the subtle sources of inspiration hidden in plain sight. Especially when navigating the bustling aisles of boutique stores or quaint local shops, our gaze often remains fixed at eye level, making us susceptible to missing out on truly innovative and enchanting decor ideas. Imagine strolling through a stylish boutique, captivated by the meticulously arranged displays, only to realize the real magic lies above. It was precisely this “look up” moment that unveiled a captivating decor concept to me, one that promises to transform any space with effortless elegance: hanging fabric hoops.

My initial encounter with these decorative wonders occurred during a recent visit to a local shop. At first glance, the concept seemed simple, almost unassuming. However, the moment my eyes truly registered the intricate beauty suspended overhead, I knew I had stumbled upon something special. Photos, as I’ve learned, often fail to capture the true essence of certain crafts. While digital images can convey the basic structure, they rarely do justice to the interplay of light, texture, and movement that brings these fabric hoops to life. In person, they created a truly memorable impression, sparking an immediate desire to recreate their charm.

The strips of fabric used in the boutique display possessed a beautiful, subtle sheen that caught the ambient light, creating pockets of soft luminescence. Interspersed within these fabric strips were delicate, glittery ribbons that added an unexpected touch of sparkle. It was these shimmering elements, particularly, that elevated the entire arrangement. The light danced and twinkled around and through each hoop, casting a warm, inviting glow that was simply irresistible. This enchanting visual immediately brought to mind festive occasions, making them a perfect candidate for stunning New Year’s Eve decor or any celebration where a touch of glamour is desired. The glittering areas weren’t just decorative; they were transformative, turning simple fabric into an artful display of light and movement.

Why Fabric Hoop Decor is a Game-Changer for Home Styling

Beyond their initial captivating appearance, hanging fabric hoops offer a multitude of benefits that make them an ideal choice for both temporary party decor and permanent home accents. Their versatility, ease of creation, and capacity for customization are truly remarkable, offering a fresh perspective on creative home styling.

A Feast for the Eyes: The Aesthetic Appeal

The beauty of fabric hoop decor lies in its simplicity and the dynamic visual interest it creates. Unlike static wall art, these hoops introduce movement and a soft, ethereal quality to any room. The gentle sway of fabric strips and ribbons adds a dynamic element, making the decor feel alive and responsive to its environment. The varied textures and subtle sheen of different fabrics contribute to a rich visual tapestry that can complement various interior design styles, from bohemian and rustic to minimalist and modern. They add a much-needed layer of softness and texture, breaking the monotony of hard lines and flat surfaces often found in contemporary homes.

Unexpected Elegance from Simple Materials

One of the most appealing aspects of this craft is its ability to transform everyday, often overlooked materials into something genuinely elegant. Embroidery hoops, typically associated with traditional needlework, are repurposed as sophisticated frames. Fabric scraps, which might otherwise end up in the discard pile, become the flowing, textural heart of the design. This blend of humble beginnings and refined outcome is what gives fabric hoop decor its unique charm, proving that true elegance doesn’t always require expensive materials.

Seasonal & Event Versatility

While the glittery version immediately suggests festive celebrations like New Year’s Eve, the potential for customization means these hoops can adapt to any season or event. Imagine soft pastels and floral patterns for spring, vibrant hues for summer garden parties, warm earth tones for autumn, or crisp whites and silvers for winter wonderlands. They can serve as charming backdrops for baby showers, romantic accents for weddings, or playful additions to a child’s bedroom. Their ability to be easily changed and adapted makes them a truly sustainable and flexible decor option.

The Simplicity of Creation: Your Guide to DIY Fabric Hoops

Perhaps the most compelling reason to try this project is its remarkable ease of construction. With minimal supplies and just a few minutes, you can craft a beautiful piece of decor that looks far more intricate than the effort it requires. It’s a fantastic project for crafters of all skill levels, offering immediate gratification and a tangible sense of accomplishment.

Materials You’ll Need

The beauty of this DIY project lies in its accessibility. You likely already have many of these items stashed around your house, making it incredibly budget-friendly and eco-conscious.

Embroidery Hoops: These are the foundation of your decor. Available in various sizes (from small 4-inch hoops to large 12-inch or even bigger), they can be found at craft stores or online. Consider using different sizes to create a dynamic cluster. Natural wood hoops offer a rustic charm, while painted hoops can blend seamlessly with your chosen color scheme.

Fabric Scraps: This is where your creativity truly shines! Old t-shirts, worn-out scarves, leftover fabric from sewing projects, even retired bed sheets can be repurposed. Consider fabrics with different textures: soft cottons, flowing silks, sheer organzas, or even textured linens. You can cut them into neat strips for a uniform look or tear them for a more bohemian, frayed edge aesthetic. Aim for strips that are roughly 1-2 inches wide and varying lengths, typically between 18-36 inches, though you can experiment for different effects.

Ribbons & Embellishments: To add that extra sparkle or textural interest, raid your leftover gift-wrapping supplies. Glittery ribbons, satin ribbons, lace trims, jute twine, or even strings of beads can be woven in with the fabric. The key is to select materials that complement your chosen fabric palette and desired aesthetic.

Scissors: For cutting fabric and ribbons.

Optional: Hot Glue Gun: While tying the strips is often sufficient, a dab of hot glue can help secure fabric and ribbons more firmly to the hoop, especially for designs that will be handled frequently or need to withstand drafts.

Optional: Fishing Line or Decorative String: For hanging your finished hoops. Clear fishing line creates an invisible suspension, making the hoops appear to float, while decorative string can become part of the design.

Step-by-Step Assembly

Making these decorative hoops is incredibly straightforward, often taking less than five minutes per hoop once your materials are prepared.

Prepare Your Fabric Strips: Gather your chosen fabrics and ribbons. Decide whether you want clean-cut edges or a more organic, torn look. Cut or tear your fabrics into strips of varying lengths and widths. Having a mix adds visual interest. For instance, a few longer, wider strips combined with shorter, narrower ones and some glittery ribbons.

Attach Fabric to the Hoop: Take an embroidery hoop and separate its two rings. For ease, you can often leave them together. Start tying your fabric strips and ribbons around the inner ring (or both rings if they are together). A simple knot, like a larks head knot (folding the strip in half, placing the loop over the hoop, and threading the ends through the loop), works beautifully and is secure. Alternatively, you can simply tie a double knot.

Arrange and Fill: Continue tying strips around the hoop, pushing them close together to create a full, flowing effect. Experiment with spacing and layering different textures and colors. Ensure the fabric hangs evenly from all sides or create a deliberate asymmetrical design. Mix in your glittery ribbons or other embellishments as you go, ensuring they are distributed throughout the hoop for maximum impact.

Secure and Hang: Once you’re happy with the fullness and arrangement, tighten the screw on the embroidery hoop if you separated the rings. If desired, add a dab of hot glue to secure any knots that feel loose. Attach a length of fishing line or decorative string to the top of the hoop’s screw mechanism for hanging.

Unleashing Your Creativity: Styling & Customization Tips

While the basic concept is simple, the opportunities for personalizing your fabric hoops are endless. This is where you can truly make them your own and integrate them seamlessly into your home decor.

Color Palettes: Monochromatic to Bold

To keep the look refined and cohesive, a monochromatic color palette is often recommended. This creates a sophisticated, understated elegance where texture and movement become the main focal points. However, don’t shy away from exploring other options! Complementary colors can create a harmonious yet vibrant display, while bold contrasting colors can make a strong artistic statement. Consider the existing colors in your room to ensure your hoops enhance, rather than clash with, the space.

Texture Play: Mixing Materials for Depth

Beyond color, texture is key to creating rich, engaging decor. Combine silky satins with rustic burlap, sheer chiffons with robust cottons, or delicate lace with sturdy denim. The interplay of different textures adds depth and visual interest, inviting the eye to linger and explore the details of your creation. Think about how light will interact with each fabric—matte finishes absorb light, while shiny materials reflect it, creating dynamic highlights.

Varying Sizes & Depths for Visual Interest

Instead of just one hoop, consider creating a cluster of several hoops of different sizes. Arrange them at varying heights and depths to create a captivating sculptural effect. This technique adds dynamism and makes the display feel more intentional and artful. You can hang them individually or connect them with small loops of string to create a cascading mobile.

Placement Ideas: Where to Hang Your Creations

The beauty of hanging fabric hoops is their adaptability to various spaces:

Wall Art: Hang them individually or in clusters on a blank wall to add texture and a focal point.

Window Accent: Suspend them in front of a window to catch natural light, creating beautiful shadows and a soft, filtered glow.

Ceiling Mobile: For a truly ethereal effect, hang multiple hoops from the ceiling at different heights, creating a whimsical mobile that can define a space, such as a reading nook or a child’s nursery.

Party Backdrop: Create a stunning, temporary backdrop for celebrations and photo booths.

Above a Bed or Sofa: They can soften the look above large furniture pieces.

Beyond the Party: Embracing Sustainable & Temporary Decor

In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and mindful consumption, fabric hoop decor shines as an example of eco-friendly crafting. It’s not just about making something beautiful; it’s about making conscious choices.

Cost-Effectiveness and Upcycling

One of the most appealing aspects of this project is its minimal cost. By utilizing fabric scraps, old clothing, and ribbons you already possess, you’re not only saving money but also engaging in a form of creative upcycling. This reduces waste and gives new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded, aligning perfectly with sustainable living practices.

Effortless Transition and Storage

Unlike more permanent decor, these fabric hoops are incredibly easy to part with or reconfigure after an event. If made for a party, they can be quickly dismantled, stored away for future use, or even donated. Their temporary nature means there’s no guilt associated with changing your decor frequently, allowing for seasonal updates or thematic shifts without significant investment or commitment. They are light, easy to store, and simple to refresh for a new look.

The Hidden Power of Observation: Look Up, Look Around

My initial discovery of these charming fabric hoops serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of observation. In our busy lives, it’s easy to rush through spaces without truly seeing what’s around us. Taking a moment to “look up,” or simply to pause and observe, can unveil countless sources of inspiration for our homes and lives.

This project beautifully illustrates that the best decor ideas aren’t always found in catalogs or on perfectly curated social media feeds. Often, they emerge from unexpected places, from the details of a boutique display to the natural beauty of the world around us. The key is to cultivate an observant eye, to appreciate the interplay of light, texture, and form, and to then translate that inspiration into creations that reflect your unique style.

So, the next time you find yourself in a new place, whether it’s a shop, a cafe, or even an outdoor setting, do yourself a favor: look up, look around, and let your curiosity guide you to new and exciting decor possibilities. You never know what beautiful, easily achievable idea might be waiting for you to discover and bring home.

*For some reason, I felt the need to add “that’s what she said” on the end of that. I’m now going to start using “twinkle” as a euphemism for… well, not quite sure yet. Feel free to invent it for yourself as well.

Embarking on a kitchen renovation journey is always an exciting prospect, promising a blend of aesthetic transformation and functional enhancement. For me, this kitchen redesign marks the third significant interior project on my list this year, following the recent refresh of the stairs and living room, and the ongoing progress in the dining room. While there’s still some time before the kitchen takes center stage, my mind is already buzzing with design ideas, particularly focusing on the cabinets. The kitchen’s strategic location, just beyond the prominent black and white staircase visible from the entryway, immediately sparked a key design concept: balancing the strong monochromatic contrast of the stairs with a sophisticated two-tone approach for the kitchen cabinetry. This means pairing crisp white upper cabinets with a darker hue on the lower half. This concept not only creates visual harmony with the adjacent spaces but also introduces depth and a personalized touch to the kitchen itself. To guide this vision, I’ve been diligently gathering inspiration, and I’m thrilled to share some fantastic two-tone kitchen cabinet ideas that have truly captured my imagination. From one kitchen reno enthusiast to another, let’s dive into the world of dual-toned kitchen design!

Why Two-Tone Kitchen Cabinets Are a Modern Must-Have

The popularity of two-tone kitchen cabinets has soared in recent years, becoming a cornerstone of contemporary kitchen design. This trend offers a refreshing departure from single-color schemes, introducing dynamic visual interest and an opportunity to infuse personality into one of the most important rooms in the home. Beyond mere aesthetics, two-tone cabinetry serves several practical purposes. It can help delineate different zones within an open-concept kitchen, make a smaller space feel larger by drawing the eye upwards with lighter top cabinets, or ground a large kitchen with darker lower cabinets. The flexibility in color combinations allows homeowners to achieve a range of styles, from sleek modern to cozy farmhouse, making it an incredibly versatile option for any home interior. This approach is not just about choosing two colors; it’s about thoughtful design that considers light, space, and functionality, ultimately creating a kitchen that is both beautiful and uniquely yours.

Striking Contrast: Two-Tone Kitchen Cabinet Ideas with Black and White

When it comes to high-impact design, few combinations rival the timeless elegance and bold statement of black and white. Pinterest is awash with examples of two-toned kitchens, and the stark contrast of a white and black cabinet combo frequently catches my eye. There’s an undeniable allure to this classic pairing, one that immediately elevates a space with sophistication and drama. The crisp white upper cabinets reflect light, making the kitchen feel brighter and more spacious, while the true black lower cabinets provide a strong anchor, adding a sense of depth and luxury. This duality is visually stimulating and can transform an ordinary kitchen into an extraordinary one.

While the bold contrast of true black and white makes my heart skip a beat, I do consider the practicalities for my own space. This particular darker shade of black, as seen in some inspirations, might be too overpowering for my relatively small kitchen, potentially making it feel more enclosed rather than expansive. However, the example above showcases how thoughtful material choices can mitigate this. The intricate veining of the marble backsplash, for instance, provides a ton of depth and dimension, which I think truly makes this potentially modern kitchen feel incredibly cozy and inviting. It breaks up the starkness and introduces organic movement. Furthermore, the sleekness that stainless steel appliances bring to this space adds a contemporary edge, while a carefully placed dark wood table in the middle introduces a “we-live-here” vibe, injecting warmth and a lived-in feel that balances the polished elements. This combination illustrates how different textures and finishes can work in concert to create a cohesive and appealing design, even with such a strong color palette.

Subtle Sophistication: Two-Tone Kitchen Cabinet Ideas with White and Light Gray

For those who prefer a softer approach to contrast, the combination of white and light gray offers a wonderfully subtle yet equally stylish two-tone option. This pairing creates an airy, serene, and sophisticated atmosphere, making it a popular choice for homeowners seeking a tranquil culinary haven. Light gray lower cabinets offer the perfect balance of visual weight without the intensity of a darker shade, making the kitchen feel grounded yet open. White uppers, as always, contribute to an expansive and bright feel, ensuring the space remains luminous.

In some inspirations, the upper cabinets might read a bit more beige than pure white, which can be a fantastic option for adding a touch of warmth if bright, stark white isn’t quite your aesthetic preference. A lighter shade of gray on the lowers, while undeniably chic, might pose a slight challenge for someone like me who tends to be a haphazard cook. Light colors on lower cabinets and countertops can be more prone to showing spills and splatters, requiring more frequent cleaning to maintain their pristine appearance. Along those same lines, while white countertops are undeniably beautiful and contribute to the overall light and airy feel, they might not be the most practical choice for my lifestyle. However, the advantage of keeping everything in such a light, neutral palette is the incredible freedom it provides for seasonal decorating. If introducing vibrant pops of color through accessories, dishware, or fresh flowers is your jam, a light gray and white kitchen acts as the perfect canvas. The simplicity of a white backsplash is definitely something I’d like to integrate into my own space, as it offers a clean, continuous look. Upon a closer look at certain designs, it’s intriguing to note how some designers opt to paint just the kitchen island in a contrasting color. This approach is another brilliant and budget-friendly way to bring a pop of personality and definition into the kitchen without committing to a full two-tone cabinet scheme throughout the entire space. It’s a clever trick to consider for adding impact economically.

Bold and Beautiful: Two-Tone Kitchen Cabinet Ideas with Navy

For those daring enough to inject a touch of rich color into their kitchen, navy blue offers a sophisticated and incredibly versatile option for two-tone cabinetry. Paired with white or a lighter neutral on the upper cabinets, navy creates an elegant, classic, yet undeniably modern look. It’s a color that exudes depth, luxury, and personality without being overly vibrant or distracting. Navy lower cabinets are particularly effective in anchoring a kitchen, providing a robust base that contrasts beautifully with lighter elements above, making the space feel both grand and inviting. This color choice speaks to a sense of timeless style and can significantly elevate the overall aesthetic of your home.

Can we just take a moment to swoon over this stunning example? The design elements here are simply breathtaking. I absolutely adore that the upper cabinetry extends all the way to the ceiling, creating not only an impressive visual statement but also offering an abundance of storage space – a dream for any kitchen. This clever use of vertical space can also be a fantastic way to disguise unsightly ductwork or plumbing, transforming what could be an eyesore into a cohesive and intentional design feature. The textures introduced by the high-gloss subway tile backsplash add a layer of sophistication, reflecting light beautifully and contributing to a sense of contemporary chic. The thoughtful selection of hardware further enhances this modern aesthetic, acting as jewelry for the cabinets. If I weren’t so firmly set on incorporating butcher block countertops into my kitchen, these luxurious marble countertops would undoubtedly be a frontrunner. Their natural beauty and elegant veining perfectly complement the rich navy, adding a touch of classic grandeur to the modern design. The synergy of these elements – the ceiling-height cabinets, the lustrous subway tiles, the carefully chosen hardware, and the exquisite countertops – creates a kitchen that is both functional and profoundly beautiful, a true testament to the power of color and material integration in design.

My Personal Favorite: White Uppers with Dark Gray Lowers

After much deliberation and exploration of various two-tone kitchen cabinet ideas, I’ve narrowed down my absolute favorite combination: crisp white upper cabinets paired with sophisticated dark gray lower cabinets. This specific blend strikes the perfect balance between classic brightness and modern depth, offering a versatile aesthetic that can complement a wide range of interior styles. Dark gray, unlike stark black, provides a softer yet equally grounding presence, creating a sense of understated elegance. It’s practical, hiding everyday scuffs and dirt more effectively than lighter colors, which is a huge bonus for a busy kitchen. The white uppers ensure the kitchen remains light and airy, preventing the darker lowers from overwhelming the space, especially in a smaller footprint. This combination feels inherently balanced and chic.

When I visualize this white and dark gray cabinet scheme alongside the butcher block countertops I’m planning to use – replacing my existing painted ones – the combination truly solidifies as my top choice. The warm, natural tones of the butcher block will introduce an organic texture and a touch of rustic charm that beautifully complements the modern sophistication of the gray and white. This pairing promises to create a kitchen that feels both contemporary and inviting, striking that desirable balance between sleek design and lived-in comfort. The dark gray provides a neutral base that grounds the space, while the white keeps it feeling expansive and fresh, and the butcher block adds that essential element of warmth and natural beauty. This cohesive vision ensures that every element works together to create a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing kitchen environment that will undoubtedly become the heart of my home.

Elevating Kitchen Details: Window Treatments and Trim

Beyond the cabinetry, crucial design elements like window treatments and trim play a significant role in defining the overall character and finish of a kitchen. The window above the sink, often a focal point, particularly needs a little something extra to truly stand out and integrate seamlessly into the overarching design theme. For this particular window, the inspiration image below is currently at the top of my list, offering a simple yet impactful solution that aligns perfectly with my aesthetic vision. This approach addresses a common design challenge in kitchens: the narrow strips of wall space often found on either side of a window, which can make traditional tile backsplashes look awkward or unfinished. Instead of grappling with where the backsplash tile should stop and the upper wall area begins – a decision that can often feel more difficult than it needs to be – I plan to beef up the molding around the window. This strategy creates a strong, architectural frame that immediately draws the eye, providing a polished and intentional look. It’s a way to define the window area as its own distinct feature, adding character and visual weight without the complexity of tiling in tight spaces. The enhanced molding will contribute to a more custom, built-in feel, elevating the humble window to a true design statement.

The chosen window design also offers a fantastic opportunity to further emphasize the desired white and black color palette within the kitchen, much like the example pictured. My existing window frames are already housed in black metal, a feature I genuinely like and have no plans to replace. This provides a natural starting point for reinforcing the contrasting theme. By incorporating a robust white molding around these black frames, I can create a striking visual interplay that mirrors the proposed two-tone cabinetry and ties back to the black and white staircase visible from the kitchen entrance. This consistent color story throughout the home creates a cohesive and thoughtful design narrative. I believe this deliberate focus on architectural details, coupled with the chosen color scheme, will perfectly capture the “cottage-y” feel I envision for the house’s overall aesthetic. It’s about creating a space that feels curated and cozy, where every element contributes to a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. The interplay of classic architectural details with modern design choices will result in a kitchen that is both charming and highly functional.

Conclusion: Embrace the Two-Tone Trend in Your Kitchen

Ultimately, the journey of designing a kitchen, especially when exploring vibrant trends like two-tone cabinetry, is deeply personal and incredibly rewarding. The ability to mix and match colors, textures, and materials opens up a world of possibilities for creating a space that not only looks stunning but also reflects your unique style and needs. From the bold drama of black and white to the subtle elegance of gray, and the rich sophistication of navy, two-tone cabinets offer an unparalleled opportunity to infuse character and functionality into the heart of your home. It’s a design strategy that breaks monotony, adds depth, and can truly transform the perception of space.

What do you think of this versatile trend? Are you drawn to the striking contrasts or the more subdued harmonies that two-tone cabinets offer? Have you already embraced this style in your own home, perhaps by painting your wood cabinets with crisp white uppers and a completely different, darker hue on the bottom? I’d love to hear about your experiences and see your inspirations. Sharing our renovation journeys helps us all discover new ideas and overcome design challenges. The beauty of two-tone design lies in its boundless creativity, allowing each homeowner to craft a kitchen that is truly their own masterpiece. So, whether you’re planning a full overhaul or just looking for a fresh update, consider the transformative power of two-tone kitchen cabinets – a design choice that promises both enduring style and practical appeal.

Mastering Home Decor Shopping: Your Ultimate Guide to Flawless Color Matching and Smart Organization

Embarking on the exciting journey of home decor, especially after the foundational work like painting is done, often feels like the most enjoyable phase. However, this ‘decor phase’ frequently presents a challenge that can quickly turn excitement into frustration: the elusive art of color matching. How often have you fallen in love with a piece in a store, only to bring it home and discover it’s subtly (or not-so-subtly) the wrong hue—too yellow, too pink, or simply clashing with your existing palette? The discrepancy between store lighting and the natural or artificial light in your home is often the culprit, leading to countless disappointing returns and wasted time.

For anyone who considers themselves detail-oriented, a perfectionist, or simply someone who appreciates harmony in their living space, this common hurdle demands a strategic approach. Over time, I’ve refined a system designed to keep me perfectly organized and prepared while out shopping, without the burden of hauling around bulky binders or overflowing my purse. Allow me to share what has become my indispensable ‘secret weapon’ for stress-free decor shopping:

Your Essential Home Decor Organizer: The Accordion Folder

At the heart of my organizational system is a simple, compact accordion folder. These handy folders, often marketed as “coupon folders” in big-box stores like Walmart or grocery stores, are also readily available in most office supply stores. Their design makes them perfect for holding a variety of samples without taking up excessive space. They are precisely the right size to comfortably accommodate paint chips, small countertop or flooring samples, fabric swatches, and even those larger-than-life coupons from stores like Bed Bath & Beyond (which can be folded to fit). The key here is portability and accessibility, ensuring you have all your vital references at your fingertips.

What to Stash in Your Decor Dossier: A Comprehensive Guide

Each pocket within my accordion folder is meticulously labeled for a specific room in my house. This systematic approach ensures that whether I’m browsing for a living room accent or a bathroom fixture, all relevant samples are immediately accessible. Here’s a detailed look at what makes this folder an invaluable tool:

Paint Chips: The Foundation of Your Color Palette

For rooms that have already been painted, I keep only the exact paint chip representing the color on my walls. This single chip is your steadfast reference point. For upcoming projects, this is where a world of possibilities resides. As I browse hardware stores or paint departments, any paint choice that catches my eye is simply dropped into the relevant room’s pocket. This allows me to collect a range of potential hues without committing, giving me a physical palette to consider later. Comparing these chips against each other, and more importantly, against the items you’re considering purchasing, is crucial. Remember, the way a color appears can drastically change under different lighting conditions—from fluorescent store lights to warm incandescent lamps at home, or bright natural daylight.

Fabric Swatches: Ensuring Textural Harmony

Color isn’t the only element that needs careful consideration; texture and pattern play a significant role in a room’s overall feel. I often include fabric swatches from existing sofas, curtains, or even throw pillows in my folder. This ensures that any new textile purchase—be it a new set of cushions, drapes, or an upholstered accent chair—will complement rather than clash with the fabrics already present in the room. Even small samples can help gauge how patterns will interact and whether the textures create a harmonious balance.

Material Samples: The Details That Define a Space

Beyond paint and fabric, the materials and finishes of various decor elements are critical. I include small samples or even just reference chips of metal finishes (such as a silver/pewter chip to remind me of the nickel finish in my bathroom, or a brass swatch for my kitchen hardware), wood stains, countertop materials, or even flooring samples. These seemingly minor details contribute immensely to the cohesive aesthetic of a room. Having them on hand allows for real-time comparison with potential purchases, from light fixtures to cabinet pulls or decorative trays.

Room Measurements: Preventing Costly Sizing Errors

The rear pocket of my folder is dedicated to miscellaneous but absolutely critical items, primarily room measurements and receipts. Knowing the exact dimensions of walls, window frames, doorways, and the specific areas where you intend to place furniture is paramount. Will that gorgeous console table fit in your entryway? Will the new rug fill the living room space appropriately? Having these numbers readily available eliminates guesswork and prevents the immense hassle of purchasing an item only to find it doesn’t fit. While some prefer storing measurements digitally on their phones (a practice I’m integrating more and more), a physical backup can still be invaluable, especially when battery life is a concern or you simply prefer a tangible reference.

Receipts & Project Notes: For Tracking and Ideas

Keeping receipts for decor purchases in the folder provides an immediate record for potential returns or warranty issues. Furthermore, I often jot down notes, ideas, or even rough sketches directly onto slips of paper and keep them in the relevant room’s pocket. This ensures that inspiration caught on the go doesn’t get lost and connects directly to the project it pertains to.

The Transformative Power of Preparedness: Benefits of Smart Decor Shopping

The primary purpose of this meticulous organization, beyond satisfying my inherent desire for order, is to empower me with the exact items and information needed at the precise moment of decision-making. If the store’s lighting differs dramatically from my home environment, it becomes far less of an issue when I have the actual paint sample right there to compare. I can hold it up against that throw pillow, against the new lamp base, or even against my chosen wallpaper pattern, ensuring a seamless visual match.

This organized approach translates into tangible benefits:

Eliminate Guesswork: No more “I think this might work” purchases. You’ll make confident decisions based on actual comparisons.

Save Time and Money: The most immediate and significant benefit. Avoiding returns saves countless hours of driving back and forth, repacking, and standing in line. It also prevents the financial hit of items that might not be returnable or restocking fees.

Reduce Stress: The decor process should be enjoyable. Having your references handy removes a huge layer of anxiety, allowing you to focus on the aesthetics and joy of transforming your space.

Achieve Cohesive Design: By constantly cross-referencing, you ensure that every new addition harmonizes with the existing elements, contributing to a truly cohesive and aesthetically pleasing interior design.

Efficient Shopping Trips: Instead of multiple trips for one item, you can often knock out several purchases in a single, well-planned excursion.

Advanced Tips for the Detail-Oriented Decorator

Precision Paint Matching: The Code is Key

One particularly valuable time-saving and accuracy-boosting feature of my folder concerns paint matching. For several projects, including my living room, primary bedroom, and craft room, I initially selected Valspar paint colors but had them matched to Behr paint (a decision based on brand trust, as detailed in this post). If I were to need more paint of the exact same color down the line, relying solely on a physical chip for a re-match could lead to subtle variations. Even with the most sophisticated color-matching software, there’s always a slight chance the hue could be ever-so-slightly off from the original mixture.

To circumvent this potential problem, I employ a simple yet highly effective trick: I mark the back of the paint chip with the specific color code found on the label of the paint can. While peeling off the entire label proved unsuccessful (and messy!), jotting down the code directly onto the chip works perfectly. When I need more paint of that precise shade, I simply present this code to the paint clerk. This ensures they are recreating the identical mixture from the original formula, guaranteeing an exact match every single time. This small step can save immense frustration and ensure color consistency throughout your home, especially for touch-ups or expanding a painted area.

The Indispensable Measuring Tape: Small Tool, Big Impact

Another often-overlooked but incredibly useful tool for any decor enthusiast is a compact measuring tape. While most people likely have a standard, heavy-duty tape measure for DIY projects, fabric stores (and even stores like Walmart) sell much smaller, lighter versions. These are designed to be compact enough to fit conveniently in your purse or the small pocket of your decor folder without adding significant weight or bulk.

This little lifesaver is invaluable for more than just picking out furniture. Imagine eyeing a beautiful set of baskets—will they fit on your existing shelves? What about that piece of wall art; is it the right scale for your entryway? How much fabric do you need for a small DIY project? A compact measuring tape provides instant answers to these questions, preventing those “I hope it fits” purchases that often end in disappointment and returns. It’s a small investment that yields huge returns in convenience and accuracy for everything from furniture to decorative accents and even ensuring proper curtain lengths.

Beyond the Folder: Integrating Digital Tools

While the physical accordion folder forms the bedrock of an organized decor strategy, it’s wise to complement it with modern digital tools. Many excellent apps now exist for taking and storing room measurements, creating digital mood boards, or even virtually previewing paint colors on your walls. The beauty lies in integrating these methods: keeping physical samples for accurate color and texture comparison, while leveraging digital tools for spatial planning and inspiration management. This hybrid approach offers the best of both worlds, ensuring you’re equipped for every decorating challenge.

Your Decorating Journey: From Vision to Reality

Transforming your house into a home you truly love doesn’t have to be a minefield of mismatched colors and ill-fitting furniture. By embracing a proactive and organized approach to your decor shopping, you move from guesswork to informed decisions. This system, built on the simple yet powerful principle of having the right information at the right time, ensures that every purchase brings you closer to your ideal living space, rather than adding to a pile of returns.

Now, I’d love to hear from you! What are your tried-and-true methods for making sure you don’t have to return every beautiful piece you buy? What indispensable tools do you carry with you on your decor adventures? Share your wisdom and spill your secrets!

Unwinding, Grooving, and the Art of Self-Care: Finding Joy Beyond the Daily Grind

After a week filled with practical home improvement projects, often involving sawdust, paint splatters, and the occasional splinter, it’s truly invigorating to set aside the tools and simply embrace a moment of pure enjoyment. Today, as we usher in the weekend, seems like the perfect opportunity to let loose, shed the week’s stresses, and indulge in some much-needed fun. Does anyone else feel that irresistible urge to just get up and dance?

There are some songs that simply burrow into your brain, take root, and refuse to leave. Lately, I’ve found myself completely captivated by one particular track – to the point where I literally cannot stop listening to it. The rhythm is infectious, the melody utterly captivating, and the urge to move to its beat is, frankly, uncontrollable. Every time I press play, a spontaneous dance party erupts, usually involving some rather enthusiastic wiggling. This happens quite often, I must confess, making my living room a frequent venue for impromptu dance-offs.

Diving into the “Blurred Lines” Phenomenon: Music, Controversy, and Pop Culture Influence

The song in question, as many of you might recognize, is Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” featuring Pharrell Williams and T.I. It’s a track that dominated airwaves and became a cultural touchstone for quite some time, sparking conversations, igniting dance floors, and even stirring up a fair bit of debate. Here are a few personal observations and thoughts about this particular music video and the broader impact of such a catchy, yet often controversial, pop anthem:

The “Safe” Version vs. The Unrated Cut: It’s crucial to note that the version embedded above, and the one I’m referring to, is the ‘safe’ or edited version of the “Blurred Lines” music video. For those unfamiliar, an unrated version also exists, which garnered significant attention and discussion for its explicit content. While I haven’t watched the unrated version myself, the cultural buzz surrounding it made its content fairly easy to deduce. The existence of these two versions highlights an interesting aspect of modern media consumption and artistic expression – how content is tailored for different audiences and platforms, and how public perception can be shaped by these choices. It also speaks to the ongoing dialogue about censorship, artistic freedom, and the portrayal of women in music videos, all topics that the “Blurred Lines” phenomenon brought sharply into focus.

Lyricism and Catchphrases: Beyond the infectious beat, some of the lyrical elements of the song are surprisingly memorable and even endearing. One line that particularly sticks with me is, “What rhymes with ‘hug me’?” It’s a playful, almost whimsical moment in a song that otherwise delves into more suggestive themes. This snippet of dialogue showcases how clever songwriting can embed memorable phrases that resonate with listeners, contributing to a song’s overall stickiness and replay value. Good pop songs often have these small, unexpected hooks, whether they are lyrical gems or unique melodic turns.

Halloween Costume Inspiration Strikes: As a fan of creative expression, especially when it comes to seasonal festivities, this video immediately sparked a brilliant Halloween costume idea. I’m almost certain I’ve found my next ensemble! The challenge now lies in sourcing the perfect accessories. My vision includes embodying the spirit of the video, perhaps as one of the whimsical characters. The real quest, however, will be finding a realistic-looking lamb prop to carry around – or, failing that, I might need to scour local thrift stores for a fantastic metallic tracksuit to channel my inner Pharrell Williams. Given that Pharrell and I both share a distinctive dimpled smile, I’m confident I could pull off the look with a certain flair. This creative spark just goes to show how pop culture, even through music videos, can ignite imagination and inspire playful self-expression, particularly around beloved holidays like Halloween.

Anticipating the Ultimate Dance Party at Haven: Speaking of infectious beats and shared joy, I’ve already made a mental note to inform my dear friend Pamela: prepare for an epic dance party at the upcoming Haven Conference! This isn’t just any gathering; it’s a chance for like-minded individuals to connect, learn, and, most importantly, celebrate. Our dance-off will definitely feature “Blurred Lines” as a cornerstone track, but it absolutely won’t be alone. Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” is another non-negotiable addition to our playlist. These songs are more than just tunes; they’re anthems that evoke a sense of carefree fun and camaraderie, perfect for creating lasting memories at such a vibrant event. The power of music to bring people together, break the ice, and foster a sense of shared community is truly remarkable, and conferences like Haven provide the ideal backdrop for such experiences.

The Dream Mashup: “Blurred Lines” Meets Macklemore’s “Can’t Hold Us”: My creative musings don’t stop at costume ideas or party planning. I’ve also been fantasizing about the ultimate musical fusion. Imagine a Glee-style mashup – a grand, high-energy rendition – combining the irresistible groove of “Blurred Lines” with the explosive energy of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s “Can’t Hold Us.” Just thinking about the potential synergy between these two tracks, their distinct beats, and powerful vocal performances, sends shivers down my spine. I honestly believe such a mashup would transcend mere entertainment; it would be a transcendent musical experience, capable of moving even angels to tears. This idea highlights the endless possibilities within music production and remixing, where different genres and styles can be blended to create something entirely new and emotionally potent.

Beyond the Hammer: Embracing Self-Care and Balance in a DIY Lifestyle

Shifting gears from music and party planning, this week also saw a crucial departure from my usual home improvement endeavors. While I absolutely love diving into projects and transforming spaces, the reality of DIY often involves getting a little (or a lot) messy. My days are frequently spent covered in wood splinters, paint, and general project-related grime. It’s a badge of honor in a way, but even the most dedicated DIY enthusiast needs a break. So, in a much-needed act of self-care, I took a delightful detour to the salon. It was a wonderful opportunity to step away from the physical demands of renovation, unwind, and indulge in a bit of pampering.

The photograph below, a somewhat more polished profile shot, serves a specific purpose for this blog. It’s an intentional effort to counterbalance the multitude of images where I candidly appear as what I affectionately refer to as a “ponytailed hot mess” – the unfiltered reality of tackling ambitious home projects. The balance, as it stands, is still heavily skewed; I’d estimate the ratio is currently around 157 ‘hot mess’ photos to a mere 2 ‘salon-fresh’ ones. But, hey, progress is progress, no matter how small! This simple act of balancing my online persona reflects a broader theme in my life: the constant pursuit of equilibrium between the rewarding, often gritty work of home improvement and the essential, rejuvenating practice of self-care. It underscores the importance of taking moments to recharge, ensuring that the passion for creation doesn’t overshadow personal well-being. It’s about showing the full spectrum of a DIY lifestyle – the raw, authentic effort and the well-deserved moments of refined relaxation.

Join the Groove: Share Your Favorite Jams and Embrace the Car Dance Party

Now, I turn the microphone over to you, my fantastic readers! In the spirit of sharing joy and infectious rhythms, I’m eager to hear about your current musical obsessions. Are there any songs that have recently captured your attention and found a permanent loop in your playlist? Tracks that you simply can’t stop listening to, prompting spontaneous dance moves whether you’re alone or in good company? Music holds an incredible power to uplift, motivate, and transport us, and discovering new favorites from others is always a treat.

So, as you prepare to wrap up your day and head home, I encourage you to transform your commute into a personal “car dance party.” Crank up your favorite tunes, let the rhythm take over, and allow yourself a moment of unadulterated musical bliss. It’s a fantastic way to de-stress after a long week, shake off any lingering tension, and transition into a more relaxed mindset for the weekend ahead. Whether it’s a nostalgic classic, a chart-topping hit, or an indie gem, let the music move you. Share your picks in the comments below – let’s build an ultimate playlist of unstoppable grooves!

And with that, I say: Go forth, dance freely, and have a fantastic weekend!

Our heartwarming “Be Kind” rainbow cross stitch pattern, a perfect addition to any loving home.

The Power of Kindness, Stitched with Love

The phrase “Be Kind” resonates deeply, especially when we consider the little ones in our lives. Our son, Ellis, now eight months old, is growing rapidly and beginning to understand simple words. As he navigates the world, learning everything from how to gently pet our dog (rather than grabbing a handful of fur!) to interacting with others, “be kind” has quickly become a frequently used and cherished phrase in our home. This pattern serves as a beautiful, constant visual cue for this essential life lesson, something we hope will encourage empathy and gentleness as he grows.

Beyond its personal significance, the timing of this pattern’s release holds another special meaning. Landing at the beginning of Pride Month, the vibrant rainbow colors of the design take on an even richer layer of symbolism. They celebrate diversity, love, and acceptance, aligning perfectly with the overarching message of kindness. This makes the “Be Kind” cross stitch pattern not only a charming piece of decor but also a small, handcrafted beacon of hope and unity, suitable for anyone who believes in the power of an inclusive and compassionate world.

Imagine this cheerful piece adorning a nursery wall, offering a splash of color and a gentle reminder every day. The joy of creating something by hand for a loved one is immense, and we can’t wait to share the finished, hand-stitched piece in Ellis’s nursery. It’s more than just a pattern; it’s an heirloom of values, a piece of art that speaks volumes without saying a word, and a testament to the beauty of thoughtful craftsmanship.

Discover Your Next Project: About This Colorful “Be Kind” Cross Stitch Pattern

This “Be Kind” cross stitch pattern has been thoughtfully designed to be both enjoyable to create and visually stunning upon completion. Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or just starting your cross-stitching journey, the specifications below will help you prepare for a rewarding crafting experience:

Designed for 14 count Aida: Aida fabric is the most popular choice for cross stitching, and 14 count means there are 14 squares per inch. This count offers a good balance between stitch visibility and detail, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced crafters. It results in a piece that’s detailed but not overwhelmingly tiny.

Full counted cross stitches only: This pattern exclusively uses full cross stitches, simplifying the process. There are no half stitches, quarter stitches, or backstitches required, making it a fantastic project for those new to cross stitching or anyone looking for a relaxing, straightforward stitch.

DMC floss colors: 15: The design incorporates 15 distinct DMC embroidery floss colors. DMC is renowned for its high quality, vibrant colors, and consistent shades, ensuring your finished piece will have a rich, lasting appearance. The variety of colors is what brings the beautiful rainbow effect to life.

2 strands per stitch: For optimal coverage and a plush, defined look, we recommend using two strands of DMC floss for each stitch. This common practice ensures your Aida fabric is beautifully covered and your colors pop.

Size: approximately 6.6 in. x 4.7 in. (16.7 cm x 12 cm): When stitched on 14 count Aida, the finished pattern will be a charming size, perfect for framing, incorporating into a pillow, or even adding to a tote bag. Its compact dimensions make it a manageable project that can be completed relatively quickly.

92 x 66 stitches: This indicates the total stitch count, providing a clear idea of the project’s scope. It’s a satisfying number of stitches that allows for intricate color blending without becoming a multi-month commitment.

Essential Cross Stitch Supplies to Get Started

Before you begin stitching your “Be Kind” pattern, gathering the right tools will make your crafting experience much smoother and more enjoyable. Here’s a list of frequently used cross stitch supplies, along with a brief explanation of why each item is indispensable:

Embroidery Hoops: These circular or oval frames hold your fabric taut, making it easier to achieve even stitches and maintain consistent tension. They come in various sizes, so choose one that comfortably fits your project.

DMC Embroidery Floss: As mentioned, DMC is a top-quality brand known for its vast color range and durability. Having all 15 specified colors ensures your rainbow design shines vibrantly.

Needles: Specifically, blunt-tipped tapestry needles are preferred for cross stitching. Their rounded tips glide through the holes in Aida fabric without splitting the threads, and their large eyes make threading easier.

Aida Cloth: This specialty fabric, with its evenly spaced squares, is the foundation for your cross stitch. The “14 count” specified ensures the perfect canvas for your “Be Kind” pattern.

Needle Minder: A small magnetic accessory that keeps your needle safely attached to your fabric when you take a break, preventing lost needles and accidental pokes. You can even DIY your own for a personal touch!

Threader: A handy tool that helps push embroidery floss through the eye of a needle, especially useful for those with vision challenges or when using multiple strands of floss.

Thimble: Worn on your finger, a thimble protects it from repeated needle pushes, which can prevent soreness and calluses during longer stitching sessions.

Magnifying Glass: For intricate patterns or if you simply prefer a clearer view, a magnifying glass can greatly reduce eye strain and improve precision, especially with smaller counts.

Stitch Scissors: Small, sharp scissors are essential for neat thread trimming close to your fabric, ensuring clean finishes and preventing tangles.

Life as a DIY enthusiast and blogger is a constant dance between creative visions, meticulous planning, and the delightful chaos of multiple projects. For long-time readers, you know my modus operandi: I’m never content with just one project. It’s not merely a case of avoiding boredom; rather, delays are an inevitable part of any significant undertaking. Instead of getting stuck, I find joy in pivoting to another task, keeping my momentum and spirits high. Often, there’s also the strategic aspect of sponsored projects that remain under wraps, requiring a holding pattern until they’re ready for their grand reveal. Right now, I find myself in one of those exhilarating yet anxious “limbo” phases, particularly as the due date for our baby draws ever closer.

To channel some of this restless energy and maintain accountability, I thought it was the perfect time to pull back the curtain and give you an exclusive preview of the top five projects currently dominating my to-do list. These aren’t just minor updates; they are significant transformations that will redefine our home and, in some cases, our daily lives.

Speaking of our impending arrival: our November 5th due date is practically here! It’s bewildering how a global pandemic can make time crawl at a glacial pace, yet the countdown to welcoming a new human being feels like a giant whoosh, accelerating past me at an unimaginable speed. The only logical conclusion I can draw is that time itself isn’t real when you’re anticipating such a monumental life change!

The rush I feel is largely due to the sheer volume of decisions associated with baby preparation – an astounding 8,452 little choices, down to the most minuscule detail. We’re talking about an entire room’s worth of furniture and all its accompanying essentials: the crib, mattress, sheets, and countless other accessories. Then there are the daily vitamins and medicine reminders (a topic I’ll delve into further in a dedicated pregnancy recap post), the baby’s wardrobe, capturing those first precious photos, meticulously crafting a birth plan, a seemingly endless stream of doctor’s appointments, daily kick counts, and the quest to find the perfect pediatrician. It’s a truly comprehensive list, and it occupies a significant portion of my mental bandwidth.

Unlike typical DIY deadlines, which often offer a degree of flexibility, this particular deadline is unequivocally fixed. I suspect our baby would be a far more formidable critic than even the most persistent internet troll if I were to let him reach his first birthday without a fully prepared room! The good news is that we’re making substantial progress, albeit progress that feels somewhat scattered. Our efforts are dictated by practicalities: what’s dry, which parts are ready for assembly, and so on. This makes the entire process feel a bit awkward, with so much change happening but nothing entirely “finished.” To keep myself on track and to offer you a glimpse into the whirlwind, I’m publicly sharing my current top 5 to-do list here for all to see.

Our Top 5 Home Renovation and Preparation Projects

These projects are more than just cosmetic updates; they’re essential steps in transforming our house into a more functional and aesthetically pleasing home, especially with a new addition on the way.

1. Crafting the Dream Nursery

Admittedly, the baby will initially be in a bassinet in our bedroom, so technically, the nursery isn’t an absolute must-have by the due date. However, the emotional significance of having this space prepared is immense. Our immediate goal is to finalize the new drywall this weekend and commence painting. It’s an ambitious timeline, but achieving this milestone will contribute significantly to that feeling of being “ready.” Many of the baby’s items are currently boxed up, awaiting the clearance of all dust and construction debris before they can find their permanent home.

The nursery isn’t just a room; it’s a sanctuary in the making, a place where dreams will be nurtured. Every brushstroke and every piece of furniture placement is a step towards creating a warm, inviting, and safe environment for our little one. The completion of this room will be a huge mental hurdle cleared, allowing us to focus more purely on the joys and adjustments of new parenthood.

2. The Multi-functional Guest Bedroom and K’s Office

K’s office, situated directly across the hall from the new nursery (formerly my old office), is separated by the guest bathroom, which, thankfully, I gave a quick refresh earlier this year. This versatile room serves not only as K’s workspace but also as our guest bedroom. We previously installed a space-saving Murphy bed and have been diligently working on the built-ins that flank the bed. I’ve secured a sponsor for this project, which serves as an excellent motivator, ensuring I dedicate focused time to completing several aspects this month and next. I am particularly eager for the final reveal of this transformation.

This project holds significant personal importance for K, who not only meticulously crafted all the 3D models for the built-ins but also anticipates hosting his parents here. They plan to quarantine before the baby’s arrival to ensure a safe visit. We completed the Murphy bed installation quite some time ago, and bringing all those video edits together for a comprehensive post will be a substantial accomplishment in itself, truly showcasing the evolution of this vital room.

Regarding the evolving color scheme: My initial vision for the built-ins leaned towards the medium green wall color I selected during a “Dueling DIY” challenge for this room. Unfortunately, the paint was mixed with an excessive blue undertone, so I decided to use it as a kind of primer to avoid purchasing more. Ultimately, I made the strategic pivot to a richer, darker green (Magnolia Home 1905 Green) for the built-ins, complementing it by painting the remaining walls a creamy white. This will significantly brighten the space and create a more sophisticated, welcoming ambiance. This will mark my first attempt at indoor spray painting, which brings with it a mix of nerves due to the extensive preparation required, but also immense excitement for the professional finish and the final reveal.

3. Elevating Interior Doors with Style

I am on the brink of sharing this project, and the anticipation is almost unbearable! I previously offered a brief tutorial on Instagram, but a more comprehensive version, complete with detailed pictures and video, is nearing completion for the blog. After years of living with bland, flat-panel hollow-core doors, I’m transforming them by adding trim and updating their colors throughout the house. The doors within the bedroom spaces are being painted a striking Tricorn Black, offering a bold, contemporary contrast.

For the rest of the house, I’ve opted for a muted, warm gray (Rockport Gray HC 105 by Benjamin Moore). I am absolutely enamored with this shade; it possesses a magical quality, seamlessly harmonizing with every other color scheme I’ve chosen for the various rooms. This gives me confidence that it will continue to complement any future decor changes. The impact of these refreshed doors on the overall aesthetic of our home is far greater than I initially anticipated, adding a layer of sophistication and bespoke craftsmanship.

This particular project has created a classic “domino effect,” or as we DIYers call it, “project creep.” Enhancing the doors has naturally drawn my attention to the surrounding door trim, suddenly highlighting every ding and scuff that has accumulated since their original painting. This in turn prompted me to touch up the stairs, ensuring the main hallway feels complete and cohesive once the trim work is finalized. To truly perfect the look, I’m also eyeing a new set of elegant door handles, which will provide that crucial finishing touch.

4. Building a Bespoke Changing Table

Perhaps it sounds a little ambitious, but we made the deliberate decision to build the baby a custom dresser that will double as a changing table, rather than purchasing a ready-made one. K, with his impressive design skills, conceptualized a fantastic blueprint, and I’m incredibly eager to showcase it to you all! The design emphasizes a super-swift assembly, and we already have all the necessary pieces cut and prepared. They are patiently awaiting the completion of the nursery drywall so we can assemble it directly in the room, where we’ll have ample space to work.

This custom build is more than just furniture; it’s a labor of love that perfectly marries functionality with personal style. Building it ourselves allows for specific dimensions and features that wouldn’t be available off the shelf, ensuring it perfectly complements the nursery’s design while serving its practical purpose for years to come. The anticipation of seeing K’s design come to life is truly exciting.

5. Transforming the Dining Room into My New Home Office

With my upstairs office being repurposed as the baby’s nursery, a significant logistical challenge arose: relocating all my blogging essentials. This includes a vast array of photography equipment, my desk setup, computer gear, vlogging equipment, art supplies, a collection of books, and all my paperwork. This entire operation demanded a new, dedicated space.

After careful consideration, the dining room emerged as the only viable option. It’s traditionally the least-used room in our house, making it a prime candidate for conversion. Furthermore, it boasts a large, inviting window, which I can position my desk against to enjoy ample natural light and a pleasant view. I’m already envisioning a stunning installation of long plant shelves in front of it, bringing in some much-needed greenery and a touch of biophilic design.

This image captures the dining room from a few Christmases ago. It’s clear I don’t just use the room infrequently; I also rarely photograph it!

In the initial haste of moving things around, the dining room has, predictably, transformed into a veritable disaster zone! It’s currently a chaotic mess, further compounded by stacks of nursery items patiently awaiting their final destination. Looking at it, the task of organization feels monumental. However, I did manage a swift preliminary reorganization this past weekend (not yet pictured), so I’m optimistic I’ll have some positive updates to share once the nursery drywall is complete and we can strategically relocate items.

This transition is about more than just moving boxes; it’s about creating a productive and inspiring workspace. A well-organized office is crucial for maintaining my creative flow and managing the blog effectively, especially as I navigate the exciting journey into motherhood. I’m confident that with a clear vision and some focused effort, this dining room will soon evolve into a highly functional and beautiful new hub for my work.

6. Bonus Project: Strategic Content Creation for Maternity Leave

I know, I promised five projects, but there’s a crucial sixth undertaking that transcends a specific room or build, consuming a colossal amount of my time and mental energy: the monumental realization that I am going to be a MOM! My blog is not just a hobby; it’s my business, and I operate as its sole employee. While K is an invaluable asset for larger projects these days, I don’t have virtual assistants or a team to seamlessly take over during my maternity leave as I adjust to motherhood. (Truthfully, I’d love to find someone already familiar with the blog, but that search will undoubtedly take time).

To ensure continuity and maintain reader engagement, I’m diligently preparing a pipeline of content. This includes several videos and posts I aim to release over those first few months (think exciting Ruby polishing tutorials and demo updates!), along with wrapping up various brand partnerships to alleviate any potential stress during my recovery period. The bottom line is that I anticipate a period of recovery and stepping away, but I’m uncertain how much content I’ll manage to prepare in advance.

The silver lining is that I serendipitously laid some groundwork for this possibility last year. When I developed my “25 DIYs of Christmas” series during the holidays, I did so with the foresight that I might need a break this winter. My initial expectation was simply a break for the sake of rest, but it has perfectly aligned with the timing of adjusting to newborn life. Consequently, I’m now focused on getting all those videos ready to launch on YouTube in a concentrated blitz, mirroring last year’s blog series. There will also be a couple of new, exciting projects woven into the schedule. I’m also exploring the idea of reposting some of my older, cherished content that new readers might have missed – a common strategy among bloggers that I’ve yet to fully embrace!

So, there you have it: a comprehensive overview of everything currently occupying my mind as I concurrently prepare for the baby’s arrival, navigate a seemingly endless string of doctor’s appointments (so many appointments… more on that later!), and manage life amidst a global pandemic. It’s a lot, to say the least! Now it’s your turn: what exciting projects or life transitions are you currently working on?

Weekend Home Projects & Happy Puppy Updates: A Journey of DIY and Pet Care

As the weekend approaches, a familiar buzz of excitement fills the air – not just for relaxation, but for the satisfying prospect of tackling various home improvement projects. While today might not bring a grand reveal, rest assured, my weekend agenda is packed with ambitious plans to make significant progress on our ongoing house transformation. If all goes according to plan, and I can maintain the focus required for such endeavors, I anticipate having a plethora of exciting updates and big reveals to share with you all by next week!

Gearing Up for Weekend Home Transformations

Every homeowner knows the joy and challenge of a good DIY project. This weekend, I’m setting my sights on crossing several key items off my home improvement list. These aren’t just minor touch-ups; we’re talking about tangible steps toward making our house even more of a dream home. Whether it’s finally getting around to painting that accent wall, tackling a long-overdue organization project in the garage, or perhaps even embarking on a small-scale repair that’s been lingering, the satisfaction of seeing these tasks completed is immense. Planning is crucial for any successful home renovation. Before diving in, I’ve dedicated time to outline each step, gather the necessary materials, and mentally prepare for the effort involved. This foresight helps to minimize surprises and maximize efficiency, ensuring that the precious weekend hours are utilized effectively. The thrill of visualizing the “after” picture is a powerful motivator, pushing through the initial hurdles of preparation and the inevitable minor setbacks that come with any DIY journey. We aim for not just functional improvements but also aesthetic enhancements that reflect our evolving style and comfort needs. From choosing the right color palette to selecting sustainable materials, every decision contributes to the overall character and value of our living space. This dedication to detail is what transforms a house into a truly personalized home.

For many, weekends are a golden opportunity to become “weekend warriors,” dedicating time and energy to projects that enhance their living environment. These projects, big or small, contribute to a sense of accomplishment and can significantly improve daily life. Imagine the impact of decluttering a chaotic space, repairing a creaky floorboard, or adding a touch of personalized decor. Each completed task brings us closer to our vision of an ideal home. The process itself, while sometimes challenging, is incredibly rewarding. It’s an opportunity to learn new skills, problem-solve creatively, and invest personal effort into creating a space that genuinely reflects who we are. Moreover, successfully executing DIY projects can be a significant cost-saver compared to hiring professionals, allowing you to allocate your budget towards even more ambitious endeavors or other life necessities. It’s a testament to self-sufficiency and resourcefulness. So, stay tuned, because next week promises to be an exciting one, filled with the tangible results of this weekend’s dedicated work and the transformation of our living spaces!

Celebrating Charlie’s Health Milestones: A Happy Vet Visit

Beyond the sawdust and paint swatches, life also involves the delightful chaos of our furry companions. And speaking of delightful, I couldn’t resist sharing a rather amusing, yet incredibly important update regarding our beloved pup, Charlie. She had another check-up at the vet this morning, a routine visit that brings both anticipation and a touch of anxiety for any pet parent. However, I am absolutely thrilled to report fantastic news: Charlie is not just doing well, she’s thriving! Over the past week, she has gained over a pound, a significant and welcome milestone for a growing puppy. This healthy weight gain is a testament to her excellent new appetite, even if it doesn’t quite show on her still-petite frame just yet. We’ve been carefully monitoring her diet and ensuring she gets all the essential nutrients for proper development, and it’s clear her body is responding beautifully. A puppy’s early months are critical for establishing a strong foundation for lifelong health, making regular vet visits and attentive nutritional care paramount.

Furthermore, I’m overjoyed to confirm that those worrisome, cold-like symptoms she exhibited previously have completely vanished. The relief of knowing she’s breathing freely and showing no signs of discomfort is immense. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly puppies can pick up minor ailments, and how important it is to address them promptly with professional veterinary care. Her energy levels are through the roof, her coat is shiny, and her eyes are bright – all indicators of a truly happy and healthy young dog. She’s back to her usual playful self, full of boundless energy and an infectious zest for life, which brings so much joy to our household. Watching her explore, play, and interact with the world around her, free from any discomfort, is truly one of the greatest pleasures of pet ownership. Every wag of her tail and every happy bark is a testament to her improved well-being and the successful care she has received. This journey with a new puppy is filled with learning curves, but seeing them flourish makes every effort worthwhile.

Navigating Vet Visits with a Wriggling Wonder

Despite her overall improvement, Charlie remains a puppy through and through, especially when it comes to vet visits. The experience, while vital, can often be a mix of comedic moments and gentle coaxing. This morning was no exception. She truly took her shots like a champ, which is always a relief for both pet and owner. Distraction is key, and a well-timed, delicious cookie proved to be the perfect diversion; she happily chomped away, seemingly oblivious to the quick prick. This positive reinforcement strategy is something we’ve been working on, making vet visits less about fear and more about positive associations, even if she still casts a look my way that says, “Why on earth did you bring me here?!” It’s a common sentiment among pets, and understanding their perspective helps us to be more patient and empathetic during these necessary appointments. Preparing your puppy for vet visits involves not just physical health, but also mental and emotional preparation to minimize stress and foster cooperation.

Getting a wiggly puppy to cooperate on an examination table is an art form in itself. Charlie wasn’t particularly keen on being up there, making it a bit of a challenge to keep her still for a thorough check. Her playful protests and attempts to explore every inch of the table are typical puppy behavior, but they certainly add an extra layer of complexity to a vet’s job! We gently reassured her, keeping her calm with soft words and comforting touches, while the vet expertly conducted the examination. Creating a positive experience at the vet from an early age is paramount for building a pet’s trust and ensuring future visits are as stress-free as possible. It involves everything from making the car ride pleasant to bringing their favorite toys and treats. These small efforts can significantly reduce anxiety for both the puppy and the owner. Each vet visit is not just about physical health, but also about reinforcing the bond of trust and care between a pet and their human. A calm demeanor from the owner can also significantly influence a pet’s behavior, creating a more relaxed environment for everyone involved.

*Sidenote: All of these photos were taken with my phone, and of a wiggling pup. Sorry for the lack of quality. Capturing a fast-moving, curious puppy can be quite the photographic challenge, especially in a dynamic environment like a vet’s office.

Charlie’s “Help” and the Joy of Pet Companionship

Now that she’s feeling fantastic and bursting with energy, Charlie has resumed her self-appointed role as my “assistant” on various household projects. Her idea of helping, however, often involves supervising from a strategically comfortable spot or, more commonly, enthusiastically “helping” to open boxes – mostly by trying to chew on the flaps or wrestling with the packing tape. It’s a delightful, albeit sometimes slightly unproductive, form of companionship that adds a unique charm to the otherwise mundane tasks of home improvement. Having a pet around during DIY projects can be both amusing and a test of patience. Their curious noses and playful paws can sometimes get in the way, but the warmth and joy they bring far outweigh any minor inconveniences. Whether she’s chasing a dropped screw across the floor or simply napping peacefully nearby, her presence makes every project feel a little less like work and a lot more like a shared adventure. It’s these unexpected moments that often become the most cherished memories of home life.

Pets enrich our lives in countless ways, offering unconditional love, endless entertainment, and a constant reminder to enjoy the simple moments. Charlie’s playful antics and affectionate cuddles are a perfect antidote to the stresses of daily life, and they certainly make the home renovation journey more enjoyable. Balancing the demands of home projects with the needs of a lively puppy requires good time management and a sense of humor. But the reward – a beautiful home and a happy, healthy pet – is undeniably worth every effort.
The inspiration for this project, often referred to as a wooden couch sleeve or sofa arm table, stemmed from a common household need and a desire to make practical use of readily available materials. While on a recent trip to the hardware store for some wood stain, I spotted slim pine boards that seemed destined for this exact purpose. These boards were just the right length to be cut into thirds, providing the perfect starting point for what quickly became one of my favorite scrap wood projects to date.

Why You Need a DIY Sofa Armrest Tray Table

A DIY sofa armrest tray table is more than just a decorative piece; it’s a game-changer for anyone who loves to relax on their couch. Here’s why this project is a must-try for enhancing your living space:

Space-Saving: Unlike bulky traditional side tables that consume valuable floor space, this ingenious armrest caddy sits directly on your sofa arm. This makes it an ideal solution for smaller living areas, apartments, or any room where maximizing space is a priority.

Convenience at Your Fingertips: Imagine having your essentials—a refreshing drink, the television remote, your phone, or a captivating book—all within easy reach. No more stretching awkwardly or risking accidental spills by placing items precariously on cushions.

Protects Upholstery: Actively safeguard your beloved furniture from unsightly condensation rings, drips, or accidental spills. The stable, dedicated wooden surface of your armrest tray table acts as an effective drink holder for your sofa, prolonging the life and pristine condition of your upholstery.

Infinitely Customizable: This project offers an exciting canvas for personalization. Match it seamlessly to your existing decor with your choice of wood species, stain color, paint finish, or even by adding unique features like carved recesses or phone slots.

Budget-Friendly: Often constructed from scrap wood or inexpensive timber, this DIY armrest tray table is remarkably economical compared to purchasing specialized furniture items. It’s a smart way to add functionality without breaking the bank.

Beginner-Friendly Woodworking: With its straightforward cuts and simple assembly process, this project is perfect for those new to woodworking. It requires only basic tools and techniques, promising a high sense of accomplishment for novice DIYers.

Materials & Tools for Your DIY Armrest Tray Table

Gathering all your materials and tools beforehand will ensure a smooth and efficient building process, allowing you to focus on the craft. One of the many advantages of this project is its flexibility – you can often utilize items you already have on hand or find inexpensive options at your local hardware store, making it a truly accessible DIY.

Wood of your choice: This is a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into scrap wood pieces from previous projects, making your armrest tray table sustainable and even more cost-effective. Pine is a popular choice for its affordability, lightweight nature, and ease of cutting, sanding, and staining. However, if you prefer greater durability and a more premium aesthetic, hardwoods like oak, maple, or walnut can also be used.

Wood glue: A high-quality wood adhesive is absolutely crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and longevity of your tray table. Look for a strong PVA wood glue that offers a robust bond.

Pencil: An indispensable tool for precise measurements and clearly marking your cut lines before you begin sawing.

Miter saw or table saw: These power tools are essential for making accurate, straight, and clean cuts on your wooden planks. A miter saw excels at cross-cuts (cutting across the width of a board), while a table saw is ideal for ripping boards to specific widths. If you don’t own these, many lumber yards or hardware stores offer cutting services for a small fee.

Orbital sander: For achieving a smooth, professional finish that is crucial for a surface that will be frequently touched. An orbital sander significantly speeds up the sanding process compared to hand sanding.

Sandpaper: You’ll need a selection of grits. Start with a coarser grit (e.g., 80 or 100) to quickly remove imperfections and shape the wood, then progress to finer grits (e.g., 180 or 220) for a silky-smooth, ready-for-finish surface.

Measuring tape: Accuracy is paramount in woodworking. A reliable measuring tape ensures all your pieces fit together perfectly.

Safety gear: Always prioritize your safety when working with power tools and finishes. This non-negotiable kit includes safety glasses to shield your eyes from debris, hearing protection to guard against loud machinery noise, and a breathing mask, particularly when sanding or applying stains, to prevent inhaling dust and harmful fumes.

Wood stain & polyurethane (poly): Or another sealant of your choice. The stain adds color and depth to the wood, enhancing its natural beauty. The polyurethane or clear coat provides a durable, protective layer against moisture, scratches, and daily wear. Consider a stain color that harmonizes with your existing decor. This particular stain is a personal favorite for its beautiful, rich finish.

Clamps: Indispensable for holding your wooden pieces securely together while the wood glue cures and dries. Clamps ensure a tight fit and a strong, lasting bond, which is fundamental to the stability of your armrest tray table.

How to Make This Sofa Armrest Tray Table in 3 Easy Steps

Crafting your very own sofa armrest tray table is an immensely satisfying process that can be broken down into three straightforward and manageable steps. Even if you’re a novice in the world of woodworking, these detailed instructions will guide you confidently toward a successful and rewarding outcome, resulting in a functional and stylish addition to your living space.

1. Measure and Cut Pieces

Accurate measurement is the absolute cornerstone of this project, ensuring a perfect fit and a professional appearance for your armrest caddy. Begin by meticulously measuring the exact width of your sofa or chair armrest using your measuring tape. This critical measurement will directly determine the inner width of your U-shaped tray table. To ensure an easy yet snug fit that can be placed and removed without struggle, add approximately a quarter of an inch (around 6mm) to this measurement. This slight allowance is crucial to prevent the tray from being too tight or difficult to slide over the arm. Next, you’ll need to determine the overall length of the top piece of your tray table. This length should be the armrest width (including the quarter-inch allowance) plus the combined thickness of the two side slats. For instance, if your armrest is 8 inches wide and your side slats are each 3/4 inch thick, your top piece should be approximately 8 + 0.25 + 0.75 + 0.75 = 9.75 inches long. The two side slats themselves should be cut to a length that allows them to extend down the sides of the armrest by a few inches, providing sufficient stability without touching the floor.

Once your measurements are precise and marked clearly with your pencil, it’s time to make your cuts. Use either a miter saw or a table saw to achieve clean, straight cuts on your chosen wood pieces. Precision here contributes significantly to the final look and ease of assembly. Always remember to prioritize safety above all else: wear your safety glasses and hearing protection, ensure your hands are clear of the blade’s path, and follow all manufacturer guidelines for operating your power tools. A good rule of thumb in woodworking is to “measure twice, cut once” to avoid errors and wasted material.

2. Secure Pieces Together

With all your wooden components precisely cut, it’s time for the exciting assembly phase. This step transforms your individual planks into the functional U-shaped armrest tray table. Begin by applying an even, thin layer of high-quality wood glue to the edges where the two side pieces will meet the underside of the top piece. Ensure thorough coverage for a strong bond, but be careful not to apply an excessive amount, as too much glue will squeeze out and create a messy cleanup. Carefully position the two side planks, standing them upright, onto the marked edges of the top piece, aligning them perfectly to form the desired U-shape that will snugly cradle your sofa arm. Once the pieces are aligned, immediately use several clamps to hold them firmly in place. Apply enough pressure to ensure a tight, gap-free bond, but avoid over-tightening, which could potentially dent or damage the wood. Any excess glue that squeezes out should be promptly wiped away with a clean, damp cloth before it dries, as dried glue can be difficult to sand and can interfere with the final finish.

Allow the glued assembly to dry completely according to the specific wood glue manufacturer’s instructions. This usually requires several hours, but for maximum strength and durability, extending the drying time, perhaps overnight, is always recommended. While optional, some DIYers might choose to reinforce the glue joint by adding a few small pin nails or staples. These can help hold the pieces while the glue sets, though for a properly clamped and dried joint, wood glue alone provides an incredibly strong and lasting bond, as proven by the long-term stability of the tray tables made for this project.

3. Sand, Stain, and Protect

The final crucial step involves refining the aesthetics and providing lasting protection for your newly constructed armrest tray table. Begin by thoroughly sanding all surfaces of the assembled piece. Start with a medium-grit sandpaper (typically around 120-150 grit) to effectively smooth out any minor imperfections, rough edges, saw marks, or residual dried glue. Once these initial flaws are addressed, transition to a finer grit sandpaper (180-220 grit) to achieve a remarkably silky-smooth finish that will be pleasant to the touch. Pay particular attention to all edges and corners, as these areas are frequently handled. After completing your sanding, it is absolutely essential to wipe down the entire piece with a clean, slightly damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth, to remove all traces of sawdust before you apply any finish. This ensures proper adhesion and a blemish-free appearance.

Once the wood is perfectly clean and dry, it’s time to apply your chosen wood stain. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully for the best results, which typically involve applying the stain evenly with a cloth or brush and then wiping off any excess after a few minutes to achieve your desired color intensity. Allow the stain to dry completely, which can take several hours depending on the product and environmental conditions. Finally, apply a protective topcoat such as polyurethane (poly), lacquer, or a clear varnish. This protective layer will seal the wood, providing a durable, water-resistant surface that is easy to clean and effectively guards against spills, scratches, and daily wear and tear. Apply two to three thin coats, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly according to product instructions. For an exceptionally smooth and professional finish, lightly sand with a very fine-grit sandpaper (around 220-320 grit) between coats, then wipe clean before applying the next layer. This meticulous finishing process not only enhances the natural beauty of the wood but also ensures your DIY armrest tray table will withstand years of regular use, maintaining its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Customization Options for Your Perfect Couch Caddy

One of the greatest joys and advantages of undertaking a DIY project like this is the boundless freedom to customize it to your exact preferences, aesthetic desires, and functional needs. While the basic U-shape design is wonderfully functional on its own, there are myriad ways to enhance and personalize your armrest tray table, making it a truly unique piece:

Refined Edge Treatments: Elevate the look and feel of your tray table by using a router to create elegant chamfered or rounded-over edges. This not only provides a softer, more professional appearance but also helps prevent dings and splinters, making it more comfortable to use.

Integrated Drink Security: For ultimate stability and spill prevention, consider routing out a precise round circle or carving a square recess on the top surface. This creates a dedicated, secure spot for your coffee mug, glass, or water bottle, significantly minimizing the risk of accidental tipping.

Smart Tech Slots: Design and add a thin, shallow slot for your smartphone or tablet, allowing it to stand upright and easily accessible. For added convenience, you could even route a small channel or drill a discrete hole for a charging cord, effectively transforming your armrest into a convenient, clutter-free charging station.

Remote Control and Organizer Pockets: Keep your living room essentials neatly organized by attaching a small wooden box or even a stylish fabric pocket to the side of your tray table. This is perfect for stashing remote controls, reading glasses, or other small items that often go missing in couch cushions.

Unique Wood Combinations and Patterns: Unleash your creativity by experimenting with different types of wood for the top and side pieces. This could create a stunning contrasting effect, intricate patterns through marquetry, or a charming mosaic look. Utilizing reclaimed wood can also infuse your piece with character, history, and a rustic charm.

Personalized Finishing Touches: Beyond traditional wood stains, the finishing possibilities are vast. You could paint your tray table to perfectly match your room’s existing color scheme, apply a distressed finish for a popular vintage or shabby-chic aesthetic, or even use a clear epoxy coating for an ultra-durable, high-gloss surface that truly stands out.

Enhanced Stability with Non-Slip Features: For superior grip and to prevent any sliding on smoother armrests, consider adding self-adhesive felt pads, thin strips of rubber, or even small silicone feet to the underside of the side slats. This not only secures the tray but also protects your furniture from scratches.

These extensive customization options ensure that you can tailor your armrest tray table precisely for relaxing, working, or anything else you might need, making it an incredibly versatile and truly indispensable addition to your living space. The paramount feature remains its remarkable ease of use and the fact that it ingeniously requires no extra floor space, unlike a traditional, bulky side table.

This entire project is remarkably quick to set up, often requiring less than ten minutes for the cutting and initial gluing phases. The majority of the project time is dedicated to patiently waiting for the wood glue, stain, and protective polyurethane coats to dry and cure properly. Therefore, always be sure to consult and adhere to the specific instructions provided on the back of your product cans for accurate drying times to ensure the best results and durability. I was so delighted with the functionality and aesthetic of the first armrest caddy I made that I immediately crafted a second one for my living room, and my dad has been persistently asking me to make some for his own home ever since! While square armrests are undoubtedly the most ideal and straightforward fit for this particular design, it can theoretically function quite well for even rounded couch arms, provided that the side pieces are cut long enough to ensure sufficient stability and a secure grip on top of the armrest. Indeed, I’ve even observed attractive rounded versions of these sofa arm tables available for sale online, particularly on artisan marketplaces like Etsy, showcasing the design’s adaptability.

While I admittedly picked up a perfectly good, new board specifically for the initial creation of this project, meaning it wasn’t strictly a “scrap wood project” in that specific instance, the inherent beauty and cleverness of this design lie in its perfect suitability for utilizing smaller, leftover pieces of timber from other, larger woodworking endeavors. In that sense, it truly embodies the spirit of scrap wood repurposing. This particular endeavor is undoubtedly a “pin-spired” project, as I first stumbled upon the brilliant concept and enthusiastically pinned the original idea several months prior to embarking on my own version. My motivation to go ahead and finally complete this project was further significantly amplified after seeing other fantastic interpretations, such as the impressive version generously shared by Merrypad. It’s truly fascinating to observe how a single, clever idea can organically spark so much creativity and inspire so many personalized variations across the DIY community!

Ultimately, whether you choose to call it a couch arm table, a wooden sofa armrest table, a couch sleeve, or simply a convenient drink rest – the precise nomenclature matters significantly less than the incredible utility and practical benefit it consistently provides! This project stands as a testament to the powerful principle that often, the most straightforward and simple ideas can yield the most useful, long-lasting, and highly satisfying results in home improvement.

And its remarkable usefulness has truly stood the test of time, proving its enduring value! Here’s an updated picture from 2016 of my living space, clearly showcasing that these custom-made armrest tray tables are still very much a beloved and frequently utilized part of my home setup. Whether they’re holding a steaming morning cup of coffee to kickstart the day or a relaxing evening glass of wine to unwind, their sheer convenience and unwavering functionality are simply unmatched. They seamlessly integrate into the rhythm of daily life, consistently proving to be one of those small, seemingly minor DIY projects that ends up making a profoundly significant difference in comfort and practicality.

A common and excellent question that has frequently arisen since this project was originally posted is whether scrap plywood can be effectively used as an alternative to solid wood. Absolutely! Plywood can indeed be a fantastic and practical alternative, especially if you happen to have suitable pieces readily available from other construction or crafting projects. However, there is one crucial consideration when opting for plywood, particularly for a surface that will routinely hold beverages: the importance of sealing it exceptionally well. Plywood layers are inherently more susceptible to moisture absorption than solid wood. If not properly and thoroughly sealed, prolonged exposure to moisture (from spills, condensation, or humidity) can cause the layers to swell, warp, and even delaminate over time. This would unfortunately undermine the very purpose of this simple design, which relies on a flat, stable, and durable surface. Therefore, if you choose to utilize plywood, ensure you invest extra care and attention in the sealing and finishing steps to guarantee its longevity and functionality!

The spirit of Thanksgiving often brings with it the joy of gathering, the warmth of shared meals, and the beauty of a festive table. While the main course usually takes center stage, a thoughtfully decorated table can elevate the entire dining experience, making it truly memorable. This year, with the dinner preparations expertly handled by my mom, I found myself with the perfect opportunity to channel my creative energy into something equally important yet often overlooked: the centerpiece. The challenge? To craft something stylish, seasonal, and significant without spending a fortune or countless hours.

And so, the idea for a last-minute, dollar store Thanksgiving centerpiece was born. This project proves that you don’t need a hefty budget or extensive crafting skills to create a beautiful focal point for your holiday table. In fact, with a bit of ingenuity and a quick trip to your local dollar store or even just a rummage through your own home, you can assemble a charming display that looks far more expensive than it is. Let’s dive into how you can transform simple, everyday items into a show-stopping piece that will impress your guests and bring a touch of autumn elegance to your Thanksgiving feast.

Crafting Your Rustic-Chic Thanksgiving Centerpiece: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating this centerpiece is not only incredibly cost-effective but also remarkably simple. It’s perfect for those who appreciate handmade touches but might be short on time, or for anyone looking to add a personal flair to their holiday decor without the stress. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the components and the straightforward process.

Step 1: The Foundation – A Versatile Basket

Every great centerpiece needs a strong foundation, and for this project, a simple basket serves as the perfect starting point. The beauty of using a basket is its inherent warmth and rustic charm, which perfectly complements the autumn aesthetic of Thanksgiving. You might already have one tucked away in a closet or storage, making it a free find!

When selecting a basket, consider its size relative to your table and the other elements you plan to include. A shallow, wide basket works wonderfully for arrangements, allowing items to be spread out and easily admired. This type of basket offers ample space to nestle your candle holder, berry stems, and other decorative elements securely. If you don’t have one on hand, keep an eye out at thrift stores, yard sales, or even the dollar store, where you might find basic options that can be easily elevated with a little paint or embellishment. The key is its natural texture and ability to hold your chosen items securely, providing a cohesive and inviting base for your entire display.

Step 2: Illuminating Elegance – The Twine-Wrapped Candle Holder

Candlelight adds an undeniable ambiance to any gathering, and Thanksgiving is no exception. The soft, flickering glow creates a cozy and intimate atmosphere, perfect for a holiday meal. Instead of a plain candle holder, we’ll give a dollar store find a custom, textured look using simple twine. This step adds a handcrafted appeal and a touch of organic warmth that perfectly suits the holiday, making a generic item feel truly unique.

Start with a basic glass or metal candle holder from the dollar store. Opt for a simple shape, as the twine will be the star of this transformation. For the twine, any natural jute or craft twine will do – often available in large spools for just a dollar or two. Using a hot glue gun, apply a small dot of glue at the very base of the candle holder and secure one end of the twine. Begin wrapping the twine tightly and evenly around the holder, working your way up. Apply small dots of hot glue periodically (every few wraps or so) to ensure the twine stays in place and doesn’t unravel. I wrapped mine about 20 times, covering the entire visible surface from base to rim, to create a cohesive, rustic texture that feels warm and inviting. This simple technique instantly transforms an ordinary item into a bespoke decorative piece, adding visual interest and a cozy, handcrafted feel to your centerpiece.

Step 3: Finishing Touches – Ribbon and Fall Berry Stems

With the main components in place, it’s time to infuse the centerpiece with vibrant fall colors and textures. This is where the arrangement truly comes to life, bringing in the rich hues of the season and adding that final layer of visual appeal that ties everything together. The careful selection and placement of these elements will give your centerpiece a polished and festive look.

First, select a ribbon that complements your overall Thanksgiving decor and personal style. A plaid, burlap, or satin ribbon in classic fall colors like deep red, burnt orange, golden yellow, or olive green would work beautifully. Consider the texture of the ribbon – a wired ribbon will hold its shape better, while a softer satin will drape elegantly. Tie a simple bow or knot around the twine-wrapped candle holder, allowing the ends to drape gracefully down the sides. This small detail adds a refined touch, introduces another layer of texture, and helps to visually tie the whole design together, drawing the eye towards the flickering candlelight.

Next, introduce fall berry stems. Artificial berry stems are ideal for their longevity and vibrant color, requiring no maintenance throughout the holiday season. You can often find excellent deals on these at dollar stores, craft stores, or discount retailers like Walmart, especially as autumn decor goes on sale. For this project, four berry stems at $1 each from Walmart provided ample volume and color, proving that you don’t need to splurge for impact. Arrange these stems strategically around the base of the candle holder within the basket. Fan them out to create a lush, full appearance, ensuring the berries are visible from all angles. The rich red or orange of the berries provides a striking contrast against the natural textures of the twine and basket, perfectly embodying the bountiful spirit of autumn. You can gently bend the wires of the stems to position them exactly where you want, creating a dynamic and inviting display.

Cost Breakdown: An Unbeatable Bargain for Your Thanksgiving Table

One of the most impressive aspects of this DIY centerpiece is its incredibly low cost. Achieving such an elegant and custom look for so little is a testament to smart shopping, creative repurposing, and the power of DIY. You’ll be amazed at how easily you can stay within budget while still creating a visually stunning holiday display. Here’s how the expenses added up, demonstrating true value:

$0 Basket: A fantastic find from home, proving that you don’t always need to buy new. Before heading to the store, always check your own cupboards, attic, or garage for forgotten treasures that can be repurposed. If you do need to purchase one, look for affordable options at thrift stores, dollar stores, or even discount home goods retailers.

$1 Candle Holder: The basic foundation for our unique twine-wrapped accent, a dollar store staple that can be found in various shapes and sizes. Opt for a clear glass holder for versatility, or a simple ceramic one.

$0 Twine and Hot Glue: These were items already owned, showcasing the benefit of having a basic craft supply stash. However, both can be easily sourced from a dollar store or craft store for a minimal cost, often just a few dollars for a lifetime supply for small projects. A small spool of jute twine and a pack of hot glue sticks are excellent investments for any DIY enthusiast.

$4 for 4 Berry Stems: Purchased at $1 each from Walmart, these stems add significant visual impact and vibrant seasonal color, instantly elevating the entire arrangement. Always keep an eye out for similar deals at clearance racks, seasonal sales, or other discount stores like Target or even craft stores using coupons.

Total Investment: $5

Yes, you read that right – a grand total of just five dollars for a centerpiece that looks like it could have cost ten times that amount! This budget-friendly approach allows you to save your money for other Thanksgiving essentials, like that delicious turkey, a festive beverage selection, or extra pies to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. It’s a smart way to maximize your holiday budget without sacrificing style or impact.

The beauty of this project is not just in its affordability, but also in its accessibility. Anyone can recreate this look, regardless of their crafting experience. It’s a wonderful way to add a personalized, handmade touch to your holiday without the stress often associated with elaborate decorations. This centerpiece proves that elegance and charm don’t have to come with a high price tag. Instead, they can be found in the simplicity of repurposed items and thoughtful arrangement, transforming your Thanksgiving table into a welcoming and festive gathering space for family and friends. The natural textures and warm colors create an inviting ambiance that perfectly encapsulates the gratitude and warmth of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Extending the Theme: Personalized Place Settings with Pumpkins

Beyond the central focus of your magnificent centerpiece, extending your decor theme to individual place settings can create a cohesive and incredibly inviting table. Small, thoughtful touches often make the biggest difference, transforming a basic meal into a truly special occasion. And once again, smart, budget-conscious shopping comes into play, proving that elegance doesn’t require extravagance.

For this Thanksgiving table, miniature decorative pumpkins were the perfect addition to each guest’s place setting. These charming little accents were found on clearance for an incredible $1 for an entire box at Walmart – a true decor steal! These small treasures offered a wonderful, affordable opportunity to enhance each guest’s experience and contribute to the overall festive atmosphere. Placing one pumpkin on each plate instantly elevates the place setting, adding a festive, autumnal touch and a subtle nod to the bountiful harvest theme. Not only do they look delightful, but guests can even take these home as a small keepsake or party favor, serving as a charming reminder of the joyful gathering.

This simple addition transforms a basic plate into something special and intentional, making each guest feel uniquely welcomed and considered. It shows attention to detail without requiring a significant investment of time or money. When looking for similar items, keep an eye out for clearance finds post-Halloween or late in the fall season. Alternatively, consider using small gourds, acorns, pinecones, personalized leaf cutouts, or even small, neatly folded fabric napkins tied with a sprig of rosemary or a cinnamon stick to achieve a similar charming effect. The goal is to create a harmonious visual flow across the entire table, making every element contribute to the warm, inviting, and festive atmosphere that defines Thanksgiving.

The Power of Thrifty & Timeless Decor: Beyond Thanksgiving

The true brilliance of this budget-friendly approach lies not just in its immediate impact on your Thanksgiving table, but in its incredible versatility and reusability. When you invest in timeless, adaptable pieces, your decor extends its value far beyond a single holiday, providing beauty and function throughout the year and for future celebrations. This smart strategy not only saves money but also encourages a more sustainable approach to home decorating.

This centerpiece, crafted from simple, neutral, and easily separable components, is a prime example of such adaptability. Each item can be easily separated and repurposed for future celebrations or integrated into everyday home decor. The basket, for instance, is a highly functional item that can become a stylish storage solution for blankets or magazines, a charming fruit bowl on your kitchen counter, or a versatile base for a different seasonal arrangement – perhaps filled with spring flowers or summer seashells. Its natural texture makes it a timeless piece.

The twine-wrapped candle holder, with its rustic charm, fits perfectly into farmhouse, bohemian, or even minimalist decor styles year-round. It could be used on a mantelpiece, a bookshelf, or as part of an outdoor dining setup. For a quick refresh, it could even be given a coat of metallic spray paint (gold, silver, or copper) for a more formal, elegant look, or a pop of vibrant color to match a different season or holiday. The possibilities are truly endless with such a versatile base.

Think about its potential for Christmas decor! Those berry stems, perhaps with a quick touch of silver or gold spray paint on the beads or berries, can be incorporated into a festive Christmas wreath, a lush garland draped over a doorway, or even a different holiday centerpiece featuring evergreen branches and pinecones. The miniature pumpkins, if stored carefully, can be brought out again next year for Thanksgiving, saving you from purchasing new ones. Alternatively, they can be used in a fall-themed craft project, added to a seasonal vignette, or even given to children for play. This modular approach to decoration maximizes your initial investment and significantly minimizes waste, aligning beautifully with a more sustainable and eco-conscious lifestyle.

This entire project underscores a vital lesson in home decorating: last-minute and budget-friendly absolutely do not equate to bare, boring, or expensive. Instead, they open the door to creative solutions that often yield the most personal, charming, and meaningful results. Embracing a DIY ethos, especially with items sourced from dollar stores or what you already own, allows for incredible flexibility, a unique aesthetic that mass-produced decorations simply can’t replicate, and the deep satisfaction of creating something beautiful with your own hands.

So, as you can see, a stunning and heartfelt Thanksgiving table is well within reach, even with limited time and resources. This project is more than just about saving money; it’s about infusing your home with personal charm, celebrating the autumn season in style, and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere for your loved ones. We encourage you to try your hand at this simple DIY, or use it as inspiration to create your own unique, budget-friendly holiday decor. Happy crafting and Happy Thanksgiving!

It feels truly incredible to pen this sentence today: we are celebrating a full decade of DIY adventures with Ugly Duckling House! What an extraordinary journey it has been, transforming a passion into a thriving small business, and for that, I am profoundly grateful.

On April 1, 2010, I officially launched Ugly Duckling House. While the specific choice of April Fool’s Day remains a charming mystery even to me, I can unequivocally state that this decade has been far more fulfilling and fun than foolish. From humble beginnings, this blog has blossomed into my own entrepreneurial endeavor, a testament to the power of perseverance and a shared love for home improvement.

First and foremost, my deepest gratitude goes out to all of you who have followed along, supported, and engaged with Ugly Duckling House over the years. This community, comprised of dedicated readers and inspiring peers, has been the cornerstone of its growth. Whether you’ve been a loyal follower since the very first post (hello, Mom!) or you’re new to my signature approach — a blend of candid honesty, occasional snark, and a perpetually paint-splattered enthusiasm for figuring things out together — your presence has made all the difference. Every winding path, every triumph, and even those frustrating moments of throwing tools or succumbing to a floor-bound tantrum, have contributed to a decade of learning, improving, and mastering the art of DIY. This journey has been about not just learning *how* to DIY, but how to DIY *better*.

As we mark this significant milestone, it feels appropriate to reflect on some of my most cherished projects, which I’ll delve into below, and to cast a gaze forward at the exciting plans for the coming year. However, I would be remiss not to acknowledge the undeniable shift in circumstances from what I initially envisioned for this celebratory post. We all understand the unspoken global situation, and I’m deliberately choosing not to use certain terms, as I’ve learned it can unfortunately impact the visibility of content and even ad revenue for many favorite blogs this season. I’ll touch briefly on how you can support content creators like me at the end of this post, but for a more comprehensive guide, this article from Chris Loves Julia offers excellent insights.

To be entirely transparent, it doesn’t quite feel like the “right time” for overt celebration. Much of March left me feeling overwhelmed and fatigued by the constant influx of new information, prompting a much-needed mental break. I actually have several exciting announcements slated for release this summer and fall, all of which now feel either premature or simply inappropriate given the current climate. Yet, a full decade is a monumental achievement I’ve eagerly anticipated for a long time. So, I decided to approach this post by contrasting my original celebratory expectations with the necessary adjustments prompted by these challenging times. My intention is certainly not to complain, but rather to acknowledge these realities, process them, and then pivot forward. In these uncertain days, I consider myself incredibly fortunate if my family and friends remain safe and healthy at home.

My initial plan involved a charming little cake with candles, a perfect photo opportunity for this post. However, with our efforts to minimize store visits, I’ll be picking up a cake mix in the coming weeks to bake one at home. Someday soon, I hope K and I can enjoy that celebratory dinner out.

I also intended to treat myself to a special piece of jewelry – a ring or necklace – as a tangible reminder of this decade of entrepreneurial accomplishment. Instead, I’m redirecting the funds I had earmarked for this purchase to two impactful nonprofits: one directly addressing the current crisis, and another dedicated to Alzheimer’s research, a cause close to my heart for my Granny. Knowing that many fundraising events have been canceled, resulting in significant shortfalls for these organizations, I believe this is the most meaningful way to celebrate and contribute simultaneously. If circumstances improve, I might save up again later in the year for a personal keepsake.

Given the pervasive uncertainty surrounding the rest of this year, my primary hope remains for everyone’s safety and well-being. The enduring mission of Ugly Duckling House has always been to empower you with DIY skills while keeping an eye on the budget. Therefore, I plan to continue sharing inspiring stay-at-home project ideas, helping you finally tackle that scrap wood pile I *know* you’ve been accumulating, providing a constructive outlet amidst the current anxieties. This month, look forward to several project roundups and recaps designed to help you populate your to-do lists, alongside discussions about some major exterior overhauls for the house. But first, let’s revisit some highlights…

A Look Back at Some of My Favorite DIY Projects and Blog Posts!

Mastering Wallpaper Removal and Skim Coating Walls

While these weren’t necessarily the most *enjoyable* projects to execute, they stand out as some of my earliest foundational tutorials. They truly helped me define the essence of Ugly Duckling House: meticulously detailing my DIY processes, sharing invaluable lessons learned, and empowering others through practical, actionable guidance. These posts laid the groundwork for how I structure all my future how-to content, becoming a core part of the blog’s identity.

The Transformative Kitchen Makeover

Ah, the kitchen! This was undeniably a long-term endeavor (a common theme for many of my projects, I admit), but the effort was unequivocally worth it. I still adore the classic combination of white upper cabinets and elegant gray lowers. Although, if I were to choose again today, I might be tempted by the bold statement of black lower cabinets! Regardless, the current scheme still brings me immense joy and perfectly illustrates the incredible power a few cans of paint hold in transforming a space. This year, I’m contemplating a fresh coat of paint for the kitchen walls (a challenging task after all that wallpaper removal), aiming for a more neutral palette to create a warmer, more inviting atmosphere, moving away from the existing pale blue.

Revitalizing the Laundry Room: Functionality and Style

Upon moving into this house, the laundry room was, to put it mildly, quite dreadful. But with a vision and elbow grease, we completely reimagined it! This space received a brand-new floor (a project that definitely tested my arm reach!), shiny new appliances, and a smart reconfiguration of the awkward back shelf. We maximized storage with stylish floating shelves, making the room both practical and aesthetically pleasing. The final touches in this room were some of the fastest I’ve ever completed, largely thanks to a sponsor’s tight 48-hour deadline – a true testament to how much I appreciate sponsors for keeping me focused and motivated on a project!

The Art of Wall Carving: A New DIY Passion

This particular project, my carved wood wall art, unveiled a completely new passion for me: I absolutely adore wood carving! It’s a meditative and rewarding craft that allows for incredible creativity. Since this initial piece, I’ve already embarked on several more carving projects, and I’m eager to share them with you all very soon, showcasing the versatility and beauty of this art form.

Building a Functional and Stylish Floating Deck

A few summers ago, I was determined to expand our outdoor living area by building a floating deck adjacent to our existing concrete patio. The goal was to create more space for entertaining and relaxation in the backyard, and I successfully brought that vision to life! This project has been an enormous success on both the blog and my YouTube channel, and I’m incredibly pleased that so many of you have found the tutorials helpful and inspiring for your own outdoor projects.

*I’m still actively working on the shed series, which was also a significant build during that same summer. The sheer volume of footage from those intense project days, coupled with the desire to tackle new content, led me to enlist K’s help. It’s been a wonderful collaborative experience, and I’ve enjoyed teaching him the intricacies of blog content creation, from filming to editing!

The Dramatic Black and White Stair Makeover

I absolutely adored this staircase transformation project, not just for the stunning visual outcome, but also for the memorable banter and “shit-talking” I shared with my dear friend Kit throughout the process. Truly, one of the most unexpected and cherished benefits of starting this blog has been the incredible friendships it has fostered.

Launching the Popular Cross Stitch Series

My very first cross stitch pattern, shared a few years ago, took an entirely unanticipated turn. What I initially thought would be a standalone, niche post garnered significant attention, leading me to develop it into a hugely popular monthly series. The sheer number of people downloading my free patterns has been astounding and incredibly rewarding! This unexpected success has sparked ideas for a potential membership program, offering exclusive patterns and early access to dedicated stitchers. While it will take some time to roll out, I’m also actively developing a beginner’s guide post and video tutorial to teach the basics of cross stitch, which will always be a free resource, not a paid workshop.

Ruby’s Revival: Restoring a Vintage Camper!

Of course, I couldn’t possibly leave Ruby out of this celebratory reflection! Our beloved 1946 Spartan Manor vintage camper is undergoing an incredible transformation. We’ve made fantastic progress on Ruby these past couple of months, commencing with intensive demolition and the initial stages of polishing. I’ll soon be sharing mini-updates on the demo and, hopefully, completing that eagerly anticipated first polishing video so you can witness her remarkable journey. K has already advanced to phase 2, meticulously sanding out scratches and meticulously planning his strategy for a more elaborate, deep-shine polishing effort.

Squirrels Are Assholes: A Relatable Homeowner Saga

This particular post holds a special place in my heart, primarily because it perfectly encapsulates those moments when homeownership can push you to the brink of sanity. Especially when your abode comes with uninvited, mischievous guests determined to wreak havoc. It’s a reminder that not all home projects are glamorous, but they are certainly always an adventure!

And these are just a handful! So many more projects, tips, and tutorials await you. You can find a complete chronicle of this past decade’s DIY endeavors right here in my archives—perfect for those days you feel like diving into ten years’ worth of blog posts!

Exciting Things to Come for Ugly Duckling House!

For a considerable period during the early days of Ugly Duckling House, my DIY adventures were entirely solo. My driving motivation was to empower all the single individuals, regardless of gender, demonstrating that owning a home and tackling its challenges is entirely achievable, even without immediate assistance. I aimed to be a supportive voice, offering encouragement and practical advice. I openly shared my personal triumphs and struggles, and I was content with the organic growth of my little corner of the internet.

A few years ago, my life took a wonderful turn when I met Kyle, whom I affectionately refer to as “K” on the blog, partly to grant him a degree of separation from my online world. He has a fulfilling career as an engineer, which he loves, but we also share a genuine passion for tackling projects together. K brought along his absolutely adorable furball, Stella, adding even more joy to our lives. After he moved in, we naturally embarked on several more ambitious home improvement projects as a team.

I’m highlighting K’s involvement again because the remainder of 2020 will prominently feature his contributions! Expect more updates on Ruby, our vintage camper (which belonged to his grandfather, making its restoration even more meaningful), exciting outdoor builds, and the much-anticipated completion of his office/guest bedroom (especially critical now that he’ll be working from home for the foreseeable future!). We also have a few other surprise projects and collaborations in the pipeline. It might sound cheesy, but I truly found an incredible partner who consistently makes me laugh, and I fully intend for him to stick around! Thank you all for so warmly welcoming him and getting to know him a little better through our Ruby videos.

The Primary Bedroom Feature Wall: A Sneak Peek!

This is one project I’m absolutely bursting to share with you, but we’re just a few supplies shy of its full completion. Consider this a tantalizing sneak peek of the transformation underway!

The Dining Room Transforms into My Dream Office

Spending more time at home recently has led to a pivotal realization: our dining room is severely underutilized. Yet, it boasts a beautiful, large window that offers delightful views and abundant natural light, a perfect setting for productivity. Consequently, I’ll soon be converting this space into my dedicated home office. This transformation will provide a pleasant separation from Kyle’s conference calls upstairs in the guest bedroom (which, coincidentally, also needs to be finished!), preventing me from feeling cooped up on the upper floor and creating a more balanced work-from-home environment.

Expect even more updates on Ruby (K is incredibly eager to continue working on it these days!), further enhancements to the garage workshop, and of course, more heartwarming pupdates on Charlie and Stella. I genuinely can’t wait to share all these exciting developments with you!

A Note on Supporting Blogs & Other Content Creators in Challenging Times:

Hopefully, this brief interlude won’t feel too long! It’s an open secret that individuals like myself generate income through various channels: advertisers (like the ads you see in the sidebar), sponsorships for specific projects, and commissions from products we recommend. I’ve always believed in complete transparency regarding these revenue streams, even though discussing them can sometimes carry a risk (I’ve observed some creators being unfairly accused of a “money grab” for addressing it, which seems odd given that *everyone* is discussing the diverse impacts on businesses right now). Bloggers and “content creators” (a broader term encompassing YouTube and Instagram) typically operate as small businesses, often run by just one person or a small handful. In my case, it’s primarily me, though I do hire other small businesses for specialized tasks such as accounting and web maintenance.

Industry experts are forecasting that many advertisers are likely to significantly cut their budgets, which is completely understandable given the economic climate. This comes at a time when blogs themselves *could* potentially see an increase in visitors, with more people at home seeking engaging content and DIY inspiration (I certainly hope this is the case, as I’m always thrilled to provide that sense of familiarity and practical ideas!). I’ve already heard of one major retailer canceling their advertising contracts for the year, and some affiliate programs have been placed on indefinite hold. This situation oddly reminds me of the early days of blogging, where everyone was scrambling to figure things out on the fly. So, I’m not panicking; rather, I’m staying vigilant, paying close attention, and striving to make smart, informed decisions.

I bring this up because I believe it’s important to extend grace and understanding to your favorite content creators (within reason, of course—if they’re acting selfishly or jeopardizing others, your frustration is absolutely valid!). The sentiment circulating around the online “water cooler” (pun intended!) is that many creators feel an awkward pressure to “pretend things are normal” and maintain their regular content schedule, or to “be productive,” when they might genuinely need to step back and process. There are numerous free ways you can offer valuable support: visit blogs directly rather than relying solely on a feed reader, subscribe to their newsletters, follow them on social media, watch their videos on YouTube, share their accounts on your Instagram stories and tag them, leave thoughtful and supportive comments (it truly brightens their day!), utilize their swipe-up links if you *are* planning to shop for recommended products, disable ad blockers on their sites, mention them to your friends and family, and more. Chris Loves Julia offers an excellent post detailing these free support methods and their impact. I would also wager that in the coming months, we might encounter some rather unusual advertisements on otherwise reputable websites. My theory is that with major retailers scaling back, it creates an opportunity for other, perhaps more unconventional, brands to experiment with new or “weirder” ads in spaces that were previously unavailable. I encourage you to approach these with patience and understanding, as it’s almost certainly not a deliberate choice on the part of the website owner, but rather an ad space needing to be filled.

So, there you have it. I *wish* I could shout some of the upcoming news from the rooftops, and I genuinely dislike being vague, as I’m terrible at keeping secrets! But please, stay tuned, friends. More importantly, I sincerely hope that you and your families are staying safe and healthy. And to every single person out there working tirelessly to keep us all safe – doctors, nurses, grocery store and essential service employees, sanitation workers, delivery personnel, and countless others – “THANK YOU” feels utterly insufficient. Please know that I go to bed every night thinking of you, sending you a warm, socially distanced hug. ❤️

P.S. I read this somewhat rambling post to K before hitting publish, as there are *obviously* a multitude of thoughts swirling in my head right now. His invaluable feedback? I needed to add more about how awesome he is. So, there’s that. 😂
