Unlocking Your DIY Potential: The Pinterest Challenge Fall Edition
The journey of a thousand DIY projects often begins with a single, elusive word: “someday.” For many of us, myself included, this word has become a well-worn excuse, a comfortable shield against the daunting task of transforming pinned inspiration into tangible reality. We accumulate countless ideas on Pinterest, from intricate crafts to ambitious home renovations, all awaiting that mythical moment when time, money, and the perfect tool align. But what if “someday” could be right now?
That very question sparked the creation of the celebrated Pinterest Challenge, and this season, I’m thrilled to co-host the Fall Edition alongside two of my esteemed blogging peers, Katie and Sherry, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the Haven conference earlier this year. This challenge is our collective rally cry to break free from procrastination, to roll up our sleeves, and finally check one of those long-admired projects off our to-do lists.
Embrace the Challenge: From Pin to Project in One Week
The concept behind the Pinterest Challenge is elegantly simple yet incredibly effective: select a project you’ve pinned to one of your Pinterest boards, dedicate the next week to completing it, and then be ready to share your triumph with a vibrant community of fellow DIY enthusiasts. On Tuesday, October 30th, we will host simultaneous link parties across our blogs, providing a platform for you to showcase your hard work, explore projects from the other hosts, and discover fresh “Pin-spiration” from participants around the globe. It’s a grand celebration of creativity and accomplishment, leaving everyone feeling inspired and productive.
With October flying by at lightning speed, a mere week remains until the Fall Edition linkup. This tight deadline isn’t meant to intimidate; rather, it’s a powerful catalyst, encouraging decisive action and focused effort. It pushes us beyond planning into the exhilarating realm of doing.
Choosing Your Perfect Project: Tips for Success
The beauty of this challenge lies in its flexibility. Your chosen project can truly be anything that ignites your passion: a delectable new recipe, an intricate craft, a decorative accent for your home, or a functional organizational solution. The possibilities are boundless, limited only by your imagination and the contents of your Pinterest boards. We only ask that your project be an authentic representation of your creative spirit, not a sponsored post or giveaway. Remember to honor the original creator by linking back to the source of your inspiration, and don’t hesitate to let your unique style shine through!
No project is too grand or too modest for the Pinterest Challenge. Whether you’re undertaking a quick decor refresh or a more involved build, the goal is simply to transform a digital idea into a tangible achievement. To maximize your success within the week-long timeframe, consider these tips:
- Start Small: If you’re new to challenges or short on time, pick a project that feels achievable. A small win can build incredible momentum.
- Gather Supplies Now: Don’t let a missing ingredient or tool derail your progress. Confirm you have everything you need before you begin.
- Break It Down: Divide larger projects into smaller, manageable steps. This makes the overall task less intimidating.
- Schedule Dedicated Time: Block out specific hours in your week for your project, treating it like any other important appointment.
- Embrace Imperfection: DIY is a journey of learning. It’s okay if it’s not absolutely perfect; the joy is in the creation.
Once all projects are linked up, I, along with my co-hosts, will carefully select some of our favorites. These standout projects might even find a new home on my Pinterest boards, creating a delightful full-circle moment where pins inspire new projects, which in turn inspire more pins. Be sure to visit all our blogs and boards to see the incredible array of creativity on display!

My Next “Someday” Project: A Custom Outdoor Storage Bench
During the Pinterest Challenge: Summer Edition, I successfully tackled my gold leaf map art, a project that now elegantly adorns my study-o. This time around, after much deliberation and with countless ideas swirling in my mind, I’ve finally settled on a project that promises both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality: a custom-made outdoor storage bench for my front porch.
This decision feels particularly timely, as my porch recently received a refreshing new gray paint makeover, giving it a clean, snazzy foundation. A well-designed storage bench will not only complement the updated look but also solve a long-standing need for discreet outdoor storage, keeping everything from gardening tools to seasonal cushions neatly tucked away while offering additional seating for enjoying crisp fall evenings.
My vision for this bench is a blend of various inspirations, each contributing a crucial element to the final design. I’ve been sketching plans and refining concepts for over a week, and my power drill trigger finger is already itching to get started:
- Modern Simplicity from IKEA: Much of the foundational aesthetic for my bench draws inspiration from this IKEA design. I admire its clean lines and efficient use of space, aiming to capture that sleek, minimalist appeal while infusing it with personalized touches to make it distinctly mine. It’s the ingenious way IKEA combines form and function that I plan to adapt.
- Robust Construction from Ana White: For the structural integrity and detailed building instructions, I’ll be heavily relying on these comprehensive plans from Ana White. Her step-by-step guides are invaluable for ensuring a sturdy and durable build, and I’ll adapt her measurements and joinery techniques to fit my specific porch dimensions and design preferences, guaranteeing a robust piece that will last for years.
- Comfort and Style from an Upholstered Version: The idea of an upholstered version from Fresh Home Ideas really appeals to my desire for comfort. While a fully upholstered bench isn’t practical for constant outdoor exposure, I envision creating a custom roll-up cushion from weather-resistant fabric. This cushion could provide comfortable seating when needed and be conveniently stored inside the bench, protected from the elements, when not in use.
- Weatherproofing Wisdom from HGTV: To ensure my bench is truly durable and protective, I’m drawing insights from these weatherproof box plans from HGTV. Their emphasis on an external frame and thoughtful construction techniques for resisting moisture will be crucial. I’ll be studying their approach to materials and sealing to guarantee that whatever I store inside remains dry and secure, year-round.
- Extended Top Elegance from Better Homes: The design feature of an extended top, as showcased in this Better Homes & Gardens version, offers a more refined and finished look. Extending the top slightly on either side creates a more inviting seating surface and a visually appealing overhang, transforming the unit from a simple storage box into a comfortable and stylish outdoor bench that seamlessly integrates with my porch’s aesthetic.
- Functional Lid Support from Martha Stewart: Practicality is key, and Martha Stewart’s clever method for propping up the lid on her storage solutions provides invaluable inspiration. A reliable and safe lid support mechanism is essential for easy access to contents and to prevent accidental closures. I’ll be researching and integrating a similar system to ensure the lid of my bench operates smoothly, safely, and effortlessly.
