As a unique twist for today’s Dueling DIY post, I find myself not presenting finished cabinet pictures (a common theme, perhaps), but instead, sharing a vibrant tale from a recent adventure. For the past couple of days, my hands weren’t covered in paint or sawdust; instead, I was immersed in the bustling energy of New York City. The reason? A sponsored event called me northward, providing an unexpected opportunity to combine business with an eagerly anticipated personal visit.
My journey began with a flight into Newark airport, and my dear online friend, Carrie of Brick City Love, graciously suggested I stay with her the night before the event. This meant I was finally going to see Carrie’s home in person – a moment of pure excitement for any long-distance friendship forged through the internet. Little did I know, the universe had a rather dramatic introduction planned for our in-person meeting.

An Unexpected Welcome: A Trip to New York Starts with a Jolt
The journey itself was not without its hiccups, one of the most significant and shocking being an unforeseen car accident. On her way to pick me up from the airport, poor Carrie was involved in a collision with another driver. Thankfully, and most importantly, Carrie was checked out by the ambulance crew at the scene and, apart from a few sore muscles, was completely fine. The other driver was also sent to the hospital with minor bumps and bruises, but her vehicle, unfortunately, was totaled. Observing the scene and talking with authorities, it seemed highly probable that the other driver’s lapse in judgment – running a red light so egregiously that she actually struck and dislodged the traffic light from its base, which then landed on her car – was due to texting while driving. It was a stark and immediate reminder of the dangers of distracted driving.

Now, how’s that for an unforgettable, if somewhat dramatic, first meeting with an online friend? We spent the next few hours navigating the aftermath: dealing with insurance companies, waiting for tow trucks, and ensuring all the necessary paperwork was handled. By the time we were finally free to grab a bite to eat, our stomachs rumbling with a hunger born from stress and delayed gratification, most kitchens in the area were closed. We ended up at a bar, gratefully devouring the only item still available on the menu – some comforting bar pizza. It wasn’t gourmet, but at that moment, it tasted like the finest meal on earth, a true cure for our collective exhaustion and lingering shock.
Unforgettable Hospitality: Carrie’s Warm Welcome in New Jersey
Upon finally arriving at Carrie’s home, I was given a quick tour, naturally gravitating towards her kitchen to see it in person – a professional curiosity for any DIY enthusiast! However, with the late hour and the day’s unexpected events, our main priority was to settle in and strategize for the next day. This trip was a whirlwind; less than 24 hours in town meant I had to maximize every moment, especially since my new job hadn’t yet afforded me much time off. I had never explored New York City before, and with only a few precious hours between my event and my flight home, Carrie meticulously explained the subway system, guided me on how to navigate from New Jersey into Manhattan, and offered invaluable tips for finding my way around the iconic city.
Carrie truly proved to be the most thoughtful and prepared hostess imaginable. The next morning, I awoke to a delightful surprise in the guest bedroom. She had laid out a magnificent spread, anticipating every possible need and comfort. It wasn’t just breakfast; it was a full hospitality experience designed to make my brief stay as pleasant and stress-free as possible, ensuring I was energized and ready for my big day in the city. Her attention to detail and genuine kindness made an already exciting trip even more special.

My First Glimpse of the Big Apple: Columbus Circle’s Enchantment
With Carrie’s excellent instructions and my own experience navigating various public transportation systems, I made my way into New York City the following day with ease. The subway ride itself was an experience, a rhythmic journey beneath the bustling streets, preparing me for the grand spectacle above. I arrived at my event with a little time to spare, allowing me to capture some initial photos and soak in the atmosphere of the city.

My very first glimpse of New York City, as I emerged from the subway, was at Columbus Circle – and it was nothing short of magical. The late spring morning light filtered through the budding leaves, creating a shimmering canopy. The wind, in a movie-like fashion, stirred the leaves into swirling dances around the trees, making everything sparkle. It was a sensory overload in the most delightful way, evoking a feeling similar to the very first breakfast I enjoyed when I lived in Verona, Italy – a moment of pure, unadulterated enchantment with a new place. I had only spent five minutes in this vibrant metropolis, but I was already utterly smitten with its charm and energy.

A Taste of NYC and West Village Wonders
After my event concluded, Carrie met up with me, and we set off for lunch. She insisted we try The Spotted Pig, a renowned gastropub, and swore by their burger – a recommendation I happily took. The restaurant itself was an experience; the ambiance was immediately captivating. I loved the quirky details: oilcloth covering the bathroom walls, the intimate, slightly cramped structure that felt authentically New York, and the myriad interesting items adorning every available wall space. And, of course, a proper pint of beer perfectly complemented the meal and the lively atmosphere, turning lunch into a truly memorable part of my New York City exploration.

With our stomachs satisfied, we began our post-lunch wander, making our way through the charming streets of West Village towards the trendy Meatpacking District. My apologies if my understanding or application of New York City neighborhoods is still a work in progress – I’m still learning the intricate geography and culture! However, the experience of simply walking and absorbing the unique character of each area was profound. The West Village, with its historic townhouses and winding streets, exuded a quaint, almost European feel, while the Meatpacking District showcased a fascinating transformation from industrial past to high-fashion and culinary hub. Every corner offered a new visual delight, a blend of old and new, history and innovation.

Soaring Above the City: The High Line Experience
One of the highlights of our afternoon stroll was walking along the High Line. This truly innovative urban park, built on a historic elevated railway line, offers a unique perspective of the city. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, a perfect spring day that made wandering through the beautifully curated gardens a sheer delight. The High Line is more than just a park; it’s an urban oasis, a green corridor offering stunning cityscapes, public art installations, and a tranquil escape from the bustling streets below. Experiencing the vibrant spring foliage and the thoughtful design of this repurposed space was an ideal way to spend our precious afternoon, absorbing the creative spirit of New York.

New York City, I’ll Be Back: A Love Affair Begins
By the time we reached the end of the High Line, both my phone and DSLR camera batteries were critically low – a testament to how many moments I’d tried to capture! It was then time to reluctantly make our way to the airport for my flight back home. The trip was incredibly short, a mere taste of the Big Apple, but it felt like a comprehensive introduction to a city I knew, deep down, I would fall in love with. I had always been somewhat apprehensive about visiting New York, but not for the reasons most people might think. My fear was not of the crowds or the chaos, but rather that I would love my visit so profoundly that I’d call my mother and declare I was never leaving! Turns out, my suspicions were entirely justified. New York City, even in such a brief encounter, captivated me completely.

The journey home was protracted, with my initial flight delayed for hours at the airport, followed by yet another delay on my connecting flight back to Atlanta. By the time I finally reached my destination, I was utterly exhausted. Yet, despite the travel mishaps and the weariness, I would gladly do it all again in a heartbeat. Those few hours in New York were certainly not enough to get the city out of my system; in fact, they only intensified my desire to return. I’m already plotting my next opportunity to fly back up. After all, my Metro card still has funds on it, practically forcing me to go back before it expires, right? It’s the perfect excuse for another unforgettable New York City adventure!
Gratitude and the Return to DIY
A heartfelt thank you, immense gratitude, goes out to Carrie for her incredible hospitality and for making my short trip to New York and New Jersey so memorable and exciting. My brief but impactful visit has definitely given me the travel bug – badly! While I loved every minute of exploring the city, it’s now time to return to the real world and, more specifically, to finishing up those cabinets. Just one more coat of paint and they’ll be ready to be rehung! Today’s Dueling DIY post update, though lacking in actual DIY, was undoubtedly a special one to share, filled with unexpected turns, wonderful friendships, and the magic of a new city. How was your weekend?
