For many avid home improvers and enthusiastic DIYers, the journey often begins with a burst of inspiration. We envision stunning transformations, meticulously plan every detail, and eagerly dive into the initial stages of a project. Yet, for some of us—myself included, a self-proclaimed compulsive project starter—the path to completion can be fraught with distractions. One moment we’re meticulously sanding a banister, the next we’re contemplating new paint colors for the entryway, leaving a trail of half-finished endeavors in our wake. The dream of a fully realized home often feels just out of reach, especially without the dedicated crew of an HGTV show!
Recognizing this common dilemma, another wonderfully talented blogger and I devised a brilliant solution: a weekly challenge designed to ignite motivation and ensure project completion. We called it Dueling DIY. Our premise was simple yet effective: to hold each other accountable, push through procrastination, and finally bring those long-standing projects to a satisfying finish. It wasn’t just about us; we extended a call to action to our incredible readers, inviting them to link up, join the fun, and benefit from the powerful impetus of a little competitive spirit and friendly banter. The goal was clear: just complete one project already, transforming aspiration into accomplishment.

The Genesis of a Grand Challenge: Tackling the Staircase
When it came time to select our inaugural Dueling DIY project, the choice was unanimous: our respective staircases. This often-overlooked area of the home presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities for transformation. It’s a high-traffic zone, a central visual element, and typically requires a significant commitment of time and effort to update. For us, it represented a daunting yet incredibly rewarding task that had languished on our to-do lists for far too long. As it turned out, the staircase challenge resonated deeply within the DIY community, and we discovered that many of you were already embarking on your own stair transformation journeys at the very same time!
The beauty of Dueling DIY truly shone as our community embraced the challenge. It wasn’t just Kit and I; a fantastic group of fellow bloggers and readers jumped in, sharing their progress and inspiring us all. It was incredibly motivating to see the diverse approaches and creative solutions everyone brought to their own staircase projects. This shared experience transformed a potentially solitary task into a vibrant, collective endeavor.

Embracing the Competitive Spirit: Friendly Banter and Real Progress
From the moment we announced the challenge, Kit and I engaged in plenty of spirited, good-natured banter. What could have been a tedious, solitary painting task became an incredibly fun and engaging competition. We’d share our progress, poke fun at each other’s pace, and offer virtual high-fives for milestones achieved. This healthy rivalry injected an unexpected layer of enjoyment into what can often be a monotonous home improvement project. The playful “smack-talking” wasn’t about putting anyone down; it was about cheering each other on, pushing past fatigue, and celebrating every brushstroke that brought us closer to our finished staircases.

This little competition proved to be exactly the catalyst I needed. For years, the thought of tackling my stairs had loomed large, a project that constantly bugged me but never quite made it to the top of my priority list. Dueling DIY changed everything. I felt an unprecedented level of focus and determination. Seeing the tangible improvements on my stairs each week was incredibly rewarding, and the public accountability to you, my readers, ensured that I maintained consistent progress. My usual habit would have seen me bounce to an entirely new project by now, but the challenge anchored me. While I did allow myself a little flexibility by painting the entryway and living room (they were in the same general vicinity, after all, and their transformation enhanced the staircase area), the magnetic pull of the stairs kept my attention firmly in place.
Meanwhile, Kit’s stairs were also looking absolutely amazing, a testament to her dedication and talent. Even more exciting was the success of one of our fellow linkup bloggers, who not only joined the challenge but actually finished their project completely! Witnessing such achievements, even if it wasn’t my own direct project, filled me with immense pride and joy. It underscored the true power of community and motivation. A huge congratulations to them for getting it done!
Life Happens: Unforeseen Twists and a Hilarious Victory
Just when the Dueling DIY challenge was in full swing, life, in its wonderfully unpredictable way, threw some delightful curveballs at my challenger, Kit. As her blog updates hilariously chronicled, sometimes people adopt donkeys. And then, in what might be the logical next step for an adventurous blogger, they decide to buy chickens online. And then, amidst the charming chaos of new farm animals, they might even contend with fever hallucinations (yes, apparently, in that exact order!).
Suddenly, the very serious business of keeping creatures alive took precedence over a friendly competition that was, admittedly, never meant to be overly serious in the first place. Kit, with her characteristic humor and practicality, found herself needing to put her staircase project on hold to focus on the immediate and somewhat epic task of protecting her new feathered friends from cunning coyotes. And honestly, who could blame her? The image of Kit bravely defending her chickens against natural predators, perhaps in a scene straight out of a classic Looney Tunes cartoon, can’t help but bring a smile to my face. It was a charming, unexpected, and truly relatable turn of events.

Given her new, vital responsibilities, Kit generously announced me as the winner last week. While the competitive aspect of Dueling DIY had reached its humorous conclusion, this certainly didn’t mean the end of my staircase project. Far from it!
The Unfinished Journey: My Commitment to the Staircase Continues
So, what does this delightful turn of events mean for the future of Dueling DIY and, more importantly, for my staircase? Simply put, the competition is officially over. But as far as I’m concerned, my personal project is unequivocally not. I have come too far, invested too much time and energy, and developed too much affection for the progress I’ve made on these stairs to stop now! My initial goal was to finish, and that unwavering commitment remains steadfast. I embarked on this journey to see it through, and that’s precisely what I intend to do.
While the regular, predictable Tuesday Dueling DIY posts might become more sporadic in their frequency, you can rest assured that you will continue to receive updates on my staircase progress. I’m excited to share every step, every challenge overcome, and every aesthetic improvement with you. In fact, you don’t even have to wait long! Be on the lookout for a special bonus post today, delving into the exciting world of stair runners. I believe I’ve found “the one” – a runner that perfectly captures my vision for the space. However, I’m eager to hear your thoughts and insights on its feasibility. This is where you, my fantastic community, come in! I’ll be looking for your honest feedback: give me the full “don’t do that!” or “that looks absolutely awesome!” votes. Your input is invaluable as I move towards the final touches of this rewarding transformation.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Dueling DIY and Beyond
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for following along on this Dueling DIY adventure. Your encouragement, comments, and engagement have been a constant source of motivation. A special thank you also goes out to all the amazing participants who linked up and shared their own project journeys with us. It’s truly inspiring to be part of such a vibrant and supportive DIY community.
The experience of adding a little friendly competitive spirit to a major home renovation project has been incredibly positive and effective. It proved to be the perfect antidote to project procrastination and helped us all achieve tangible progress. Given its success, I fully intend to replicate this challenge format again once my staircase project truly is finished. What will be the next Dueling DIY battleground? Perhaps my dining room, which is ripe for a makeover, or even my long-anticipated kitchen cabinets (oh yes, I have ambitious plans for them this year!). So, who knows? “Dueling DIY: Kitchen Edition” or “Dining Room Showdown” may very well be gracing the pages of this blog in the not-too-distant future.
But for now, keep your eyes peeled for that exciting bonus post later today, where we’ll dive deep into the world of stair runners and I’ll be eagerly awaiting your expert opinions. The staircase transformation ain’t quite over yet, and there’s plenty more inspiration to share!
