Charlie and Stella’s 2020 Pupdate

Every pet owner knows the profound joy and occasional delightful chaos that comes with sharing life with canine companions. Here, on our blog, we’ve often celebrated the ongoing adventures of our beloved dogs, Charlie and Stella. Their distinct personalities and heartwarming antics have woven themselves into the fabric of our family, making their story a continuous source of joy to document. From their early days of cautious adjustment to their current unbreakable bond, their journey is a beautiful testament to the power of pet companionship. Lately, beyond just recounting their charming tales, I’ve made it a point to capture their everyday shenanigans on video, ensuring these precious moments are preserved for years to come, creating a digital scrapbook of their lives.

The moment Stella and her human, K, moved in, it heralded a significant shift for Charlie and me. This period of mutual adjustment, filled with learning and laughter, was something I extensively explored in an earlier Pupdate about Charlie and Stella’s new life together. That post resonated so deeply with many of you that I envisioned a regular series, following up with another installment discussing working from home with our dogs. However, as life often unfolds, my intention for “regular” updates was beautifully sidetracked by new family additions, like Ruby, and various home remodeling projects. Despite the less-than-strict schedule, these cherished dog updates have found a permanent home under the Pupdates tag in our archives, making it easy to revisit Charlie and Stella’s evolving story.

Now felt like the perfect time for a fresh Pupdate, particularly as I’ve become more dedicated to capturing their everyday moments on video. Charlie and Stella are gracefully navigating their senior years; their boisterous “puppy” moments are fewer and farther between, but no less precious. My daily work-from-home routine often includes them exploring quietly outside or peacefully snoozing nearby. For instance, as I write, Charlie’s ears are perked, keenly listening to the distant rumble of the garbage truck – a highly suspicious sound in her world – while Stella remains blissfully buried under blankets, completely unbothered. This gentle transition from youthful exuberance to a more serene maturity has deepened my appreciation for the limited, invaluable time we share with our beloved pups. Every moment feels like a gift, not to be taken for granted.

This detailed account, rich with personal observations, serves partly as a memoir for myself, a collection of memories I’ll undoubtedly cherish rereading someday. I hope it also resonates with those of you who’ve grown to adore Charlie and Stella from afar. The past month, globally, has been unusual, prompting me to draft this post intermittently over several weeks. Our usual routines, like many of yours, have been delightfully (and sometimes chaotically) upended. I weighed whether to address the current societal stresses directly or offer a comforting escape into normalcy. Ultimately, I chose to provide a familiar, uplifting space, believing that if you’re visiting today, you might be specifically seeking the simple, heartwarming comfort of pet stories instead of the daily news cycle.

Starting a new Pupdate always feels a bit like spontaneous storytelling; unlike our structured tutorials, these posts embrace a free-flowing narrative! But let’s kick things off with a universally relatable and often comical topic: our dogs’ sleep habits. Prepare for a generous helping of adorable pictures and a brand-new video compilation showcasing their unique personalities and endearing shenanigans!

The Art of Sleeping In: Charlie and Stella’s Morning Rituals

Mornings in our home reveal a fascinating contrast in canine wake-up styles, especially after K leaves for work. Charlie, our serene “gentle giant,” is a true connoisseur of slumber. Once K’s departure signals quiet, she promptly reclaims her deep sleep, often curled into an impossibly tight ball or, more typically, stretched across the entire foot of our bed, a solid, unmovable presence. My slightest stir, a bathroom trip, or even subtle movements fail to rouse her. She remains utterly unphased, every muscle relaxed. Only when my actions become unequivocally purposeful, signaling a clear descent downstairs to start the day, does she finally stir, often with a soft, protesting groan that perfectly conveys her displeasure at being disturbed from her peaceful domain.

Stella, conversely, once acted as our enthusiastic canine alarm clock. She’d typically wake before me, her tiny body brimming with anticipation. Her wake-up routine was an art form: an exaggerated stretch, often with front paws landing strategically on my neck or face. If that gentle persuasion didn’t work, she’d escalate, nudging intently with her nose – sometimes in my eye or ear – before climbing to my other side, often by stepping on my pillow, which invariably meant stepping on my hair. It was a brutal but undeniably effective method!

Lately, however, a sweet sign of her maturing years, Stella has begun to embrace sleeping in more. Her once-daily “WAKE UP!!” routine has become less frequent. Some mornings, she’ll simply cuddle close as I slowly awaken, her tiny form a comforting presence. Instead of aggressively stirring me, she now gracefully saunters to my side, curling into a ball beneath the covers, patiently waiting until I’m clearly awake. Once I finally rise, our morning routine unfolds: a quick trip outside for potty breaks while I brew my coffee, fill their food bowls, and empty the dishwasher. Then, Stella is carried upstairs for her breakfast. Charlie usually follows us up but promptly retreats to the kitchen for her meal once Stella starts eating, a necessary practice due to a past incident of food aggression that requires completely separate feeding zones for peace of mind.

A Tale of Two Appetites: Charlie and Stella’s Dining Personalities

Mealtime highlights another facet of Charlie and Stella’s contrasting personalities. Their food bowls usually remain accessible in the morning, allowing for grazing. This system works well: Charlie respects Stella’s bowl, and Stella, being small, cannot reach Charlie’s elevated DIY feeder. Charlie is typically a morning grazer but transforms into a fervent eater at night. Stella sometimes takes her time, though her small size and breed history of back issues mean her weight is closely managed, often necessitating a diet more frequently than Charlie. We prioritize careful feeding to ensure her health and well-being.

Charlie’s DIY dog feeder offers comfortable dining.

For such a tiny pup, Stella eats with surprising volume. When she’s at her bowl, the distinct “CRONCH CRONCH CRONCH CRONCH” fills the room. She eats and drinks in small, unpredictable bursts, making her loud chewing and lapping quite jarring. Her food bowl is promptly removed during phone calls; we half-joke she times her loudest chomps perfectly to interrupt. Charlie, conversely, loves water, taking long, satisfying gulps from either of the two constantly filled bowls. Stella, however, sips tiny droplets, often followed by a dramatic, exaggerated cough. Our vet confirms no medical cause; she simply struggles to drink, often appearing to inhale water. This habit frequently earns her extra pets and consoling from K, which, funnily enough, seems to be a strong motivator – she conveniently only coughs dramatically when he’s around!

Outdoor Adventures: The Hunter and the Protector

As observed before, Charlie embodies the “gentle giant” compared to Stella’s feisty spirit. Their outdoor personalities are a study in complementary roles, where Charlie often serves as the watchful protector and unwitting assistant to Stella’s schemes. Should a small animal venture into our yard, they become a comical team, attempting to corner their quarry. Charlie’s impressive size makes her the intimidating presence, often causing critters to flee. Yet, she’s unsure what to do once cornered, sometimes allowing them to dart right past her. Stella, the cunning strategist, expertly utilizes Charlie’s bulk to orchestrate the chase with predatory glee.

Stella is undeniably the “HUNTER” of the duo. This tiny dynamo possesses an innate instinct for the chase, having successfully captured a possum and, astonishingly, a bird – a lightning-fast pursuit from the door before the bird could take flight. Charlie, with less acute senses of smell and sight, typically notices wildlife only once it’s a distant blur, rapidly retreating. This dynamic provides endless backyard entertainment and occasional drama.

A rare, tranquil moment of Stella deciding to chill in the grass rather than embarking on a HUNT.

It’s fortunate Stella is small and tolerant of baths, because she absolutely loves to dig. Her joy is palpable, often accompanied by a mischievous grin when found in a giant hole she’d diligently excavated. I’m wary of backyard erosion, and her digging near the fence line is a constant concern. In fact, her relentless efforts have contributed to the necessity of redoing our gardenia garden beds later this year, as she’s undermined them to the point of collapse. Beyond our yard, Stella finds immense pleasure exploring our neighbor’s dense ivy, navigating the leafy expanse with charming, bouncy hops, a tiny, agile explorer in her element.

The Great Wash-Off: Bathtime Battles and Rainy Day Dramas

Bathtime for Stella, though messy, is a frequent necessity. Her love for digging means she often returns caked in dirt, sporting a proud grin from her latest fence-line excavation. The tub after her bath is always a testament to her outdoor adventures.

Charlie, conversely, despises baths with a passion. The mere hint of one triggers an elaborate evasion strategy: stiff-arming, hiding, and every clever method imaginable to avoid the tub. Once inside, she remains on alert but surprisingly ceases resistance, seeming to genuinely enjoy the scrubbing and massaging. However, vigilance is key; if your hand leaves her back, she’ll attempt an escape, turning the bathroom into a bubbly chaos. Maintaining physical contact ensures she tolerates the wash without turning it into a sudsy explosion.

While Charlie is indifferent to rain, Stella despises it with dramatic intensity. She’ll gaze at K or me with profound betrayal, as if we personally caused the downpour. Her aversion extends to refusing potty breaks, necessitating one of us to don shoes and escort her outside. It’s a frustrating battle of wills – we know she has to go, she knows she has to go, so just go! 😂

Yet, the moment she’s back inside and damp, Stella absolutely loves being towelled off! She’ll zip around with energy, attempting to slide her wet belly across the rug (a habit I gently redirect to the towel). She then patiently waits to be picked up, allowing us to meticulously dry and pamper every tiny paw, transforming a grumpy, rain-averse pup into a happy, dry, and thoroughly spoiled companion.

The Predictable and the Peculiar: Routines and Canine Communication

Of our two pups, Charlie is undeniably more devoted to routine. Both thrive on predictability, but Charlie’s anticipation of “What Happens Next™” is profoundly charming. She adapts to new routines swiftly, and you can almost see her mind working. Once she’s convinced of the next step, little can shift her focus. She *knows*, and will persist, often insistently, until proven right – which she always is. Our nighttime routine, for instance, is “humans eat, walk, dogs eat, bed.” As soon as we finish eating, Charlie engages in her “Vulcan-mind-meld” attempts, telepathically urging us to the next activity with focused stares and subtle nudges.

Stella, meanwhile, has a wonderfully peculiar habit: she often sleeps directly on remotes and phones. If we can’t find a remote, our first check is always under Stella; it’s there 85% of the time. We don’t think she takes them; she just happens to choose them as napping spots. This habit frequently leads to accidental program accelerations, interruptions, or sudden rewinds during our TV time, a charming if inconvenient quirk.

Beyond routines, both Charlie and Stella exhibit a range of simply peculiar behaviors. As you’ll see in the video, their quirks are endless! Charlie freezes when scratched, her body stiffening in blissful suspension. Stella’s expressive ears perform a comical ballet, reflecting her every mood. And Charlie, our endearing goofy girl, loves to wedge herself into the most improbable spaces – between pillows and the couch, or she’ll refuse to lay conventionally on her beds, opting for an off-kilter, partially-on-the-floor position. These delightful oddities are a daily source of laughter, showcasing their unique personalities.

Paws on the Open Road: Adventures with Charlie and Stella

Our new truck has opened up a world of travel for Charlie and Stella, who both absolutely adore it. Every ride is an exciting expedition. Charlie has claimed her own window, eagerly peeking out at the passing world, her nose twitching with new scents.

K chose this truck largely because its doors dip lower, bringing the window ledge closer to lap height. This design is perfect for Stella; the ledge is low enough for her tiny paws to rest comfortably, allowing her to gaze out with ease—a welcome change from my Jeep, where the window was too high. When not captivated by the scenery, Stella finds ultimate comfort curling up directly in K’s lap, a tiny co-pilot enjoying the journey.

We take Charlie and Stella on weekend getaways as often as possible. Last summer, Charlie had her first boat ride with K’s family; while Stella joyfully swam, Charlie preferred to observe from the safety of the boat. We also visited the beach, where Stella fearlessly ventured into the waves with K, while Charlie meticulously dug an impressive hole in the sand, playfully (and annoyingly) flicking sand into our drinks—a true reflection of her distinct personality.

Through our travels, we’ve found certain hotel chains exceptionally pet-friendly. Aloft locations, for example, don’t require extra pet deposits, offer designated walk areas, and often have lounges where you can dine with pups. While summer travel is easier, we navigated a rainy winter weekend in Greenville, finding charming restaurants where Charlie and Stella were welcomed, including a cozy beer hall with couches. During that trip, Stella also acquired a new harness, which she wears with undeniable pride and an extra bounce in her step.

Harmony and Hilarity: Playtime and Deepening Bonds

The playful dynamic between Stella and Charlie is a constant source of amusement. Stella, despite being roughly the size of Charlie’s head, absolutely delights in wrestling with our much larger “gentle giant.” It’s comical to watch Charlie patiently tolerate Stella’s playful “attacks,” a unique testament to their bond.

Having moved in when both dogs were around six, K and Stella, along with Charlie and me, learned to coexist and thrive as a blended family. Stella and I share a sweet bond, while Charlie unequivocally ADORES K. Her excitement when K returns home is truly heartwarming; she goes absolutely nuts! She recognizes the sound of his vehicle turning the corner, her gaze fixed intently on the doorknob, awaiting the tell-tale click. Her joyous leaps are highest at this moment, showcasing her boundless affection.

Another endearing and comical bonding behavior of Charlie’s: if she likes you, she will sit directly on your feet, anchoring herself firmly. If you’re seated, she’ll attempt to clamber onto your lap. Given her substantial size, this maneuver is not only ridiculous-looking but also quite heavy, transforming a simple lap-sit into an impressive display of canine determination. It’s a constant source of affectionate laughter.

Perhaps one of Charlie’s most puzzling quirks is her complete lack of understanding regarding belly rubs. While most dogs instinctively roll onto their backs, Charlie approaches it with baffling confusion. She’ll stand awkwardly over you or contort herself strangely on the couch to grant access to her stomach. The simple concept of rolling over, however, has never clicked for her. It’s truly hilarious, a testament to her unique, charmingly unconventional logic.

Sweet Dreams and Sleepy Sounds: Nighttime with the Pups

One of my absolute favorite moments, a highlight in our latest video, is Stella’s adorable “sleep yips.” These are soft, muffled barks and whimpers she emits while deeply asleep, clearly dreaming of chasing squirrels or chipmunks. I’ve tried for ages to capture these sounds on camera, but she always seems to stop the moment I hit record. Yet, with persistent effort, I’ve finally managed to snag some snippets of her charming dream-time vocalizations!

Aging Gracefully: Random Pupdates and Endearing Changes

This upcoming month, Charlie and Stella both turn nine. With age come subtle yet endearing changes, and one new detail about Charlie has captured my heart: a single, delicate white eyelash. It’s especially noticeable when she’s peacefully napping, standing out like a tiny beacon of wisdom and grace against her darker fur.

This solitary white eyelash has become my new favorite physical attribute, second only to the dramatic “protest groans” she emits when I have to gently nudge her. Charlie, ever determined to claim maximum comfort, often attempts to take over the foot of my side of the bed. When I inevitably shift her, she responds with an audible, theatrical groan, clearly communicating her displeasure at being disturbed from her prime spot.

Speaking of white hairs, Stella, predominantly black, has a tiny smattering of white hairs in random places. These aren’t clustered like Charlie’s distinguished eyelash, often appearing as isolated strands. This frequently creates the amusing illusion that she’s simply picked up a stray hair from Charlie’s copious shedding, rather than possessing her own unique silvery threads—a small detail that perfectly encapsulates the quirky individuality of each beloved pup.

And so, there you have it – another comprehensive Pupdate on the lives and loves of Charlie and Stella! I sincerely hope this delightful overload of canine stories, quirks, and heartwarming moments brought a little extra lightness and joy into your day. Documenting their journey is a constant source of happiness for me, and sharing it with you makes it even more special.
