Sometimes, the completion of a challenging home project can leave you feeling utterly exhausted, yearning for a well-deserved break before embarking on the next task. Yet, there are those rare and exhilarating moments when the exact opposite occurs – a successful transformation fuels an incredible surge of energy, propelling you to tackle even more areas of your home. After witnessing the stunning and dramatic change in my dining room last week, I found myself thoroughly invigorated and truly “on a roll” (perhaps literally, with a paint roller in hand!). It was then that I decided the long-awaited hallway paint job would finally commence. The notion of tackling “one room at a time” felt far too slow for the momentum I had built.
A quick note of sincere gratitude: thank you for all your wonderful and encouraging comments on the dining room paint last week. Venturing into bold color choices can often leave one questioning their decisions, wondering if they’ve made the right move. Your overwhelmingly positive feedback, however, has truly thrilled me, confirming that you all love the new color as much as I do!
The Hallway Transformation: From Drab to Dreamy
Our homes are constantly evolving canvases, and sometimes, certain areas linger in a state of neglect, waiting for their turn in the spotlight. For far too long, our hallway had been one such forgotten space, cloaked in a dated, dark, and utterly depressing tan. This central artery of our home, the first impression for guests stepping through the front door, had become a visual bottleneck, absorbing light rather than reflecting it. It felt less like a welcoming passage and more like a dim tunnel, devoid of personality and cheer. The transformation from this drab reality to a vibrant, inviting space was long overdue, and the energy from the dining room makeover provided the perfect impetus.
Before the Brushstroke: A Dark and Dated Space
To truly appreciate the transformation, let’s revisit the hallway’s “before” state. This image captures the initial phase, just after I had begun the meticulous process of “cutting in” around the edges. Even then, the pervasive, heavy tan color dominated the scene, casting a somber shadow that diminished the potential of the entire area. It was a color that, in retrospect, suffocated light and made the space feel cramped and unwelcoming. It spoke of a bygone era, desperately awaiting a modern refresh.

Embracing the Light: The Hallway’s New Identity
And now, it’s time to bid a definitive farewell to all that dark and depressing tan! Welcome to the newer, brighter, and infinitely more welcoming hallway. The change is not merely cosmetic; it’s a complete shift in atmosphere. The space now feels expansive, airy, and imbued with a sense of calm and sophistication. The lighter hue instantly lifts the entire ambiance, turning a once-overlooked passage into an integral and beautiful part of our home’s narrative. It truly feels like a breath of fresh air, transforming a once gloomy corridor into a beacon of light.

Navigating the Challenges of a Tall Hallway Makeover
While the visual payoff is immense, reaching this glorious “after” stage wasn’t without its unique set of challenges. Painting this particular area was far from easy, primarily due to its towering height and awkward angles. Anyone who has attempted to paint a multi-story entryway or a hallway above a staircase can attest to the specialized equipment and nerves of steel required. This project certainly put my DIY skills and patience to the test.
The Perilous Climb: Painting Above the Stairs
One of the most significant hurdles was navigating the tall wall space directly above the stairs. To reach these elevated sections for precise cutting-in, I had to employ this somewhat scary stair contraption. This specialized ladder setup, designed to securely bridge the stair treads, felt rather precarious at first. The initial moments on it were undoubtedly nerve-wracking, demanding extreme caution and a steady hand. Thankfully, my dad was on hand to act as a spotter, providing an essential layer of safety and peace of mind – ensuring someone was within screaming distance, just in case! With a bit of practice and trust in the equipment, we eventually got the hang of it, and the ladder became much easier to maneuver. This experience underscored the critical importance of safety protocols and having a reliable assistant when tackling such high-reach painting projects.
The Enigma of Natural Light: Color Perception in the Hallway Nook
Another peculiar challenge presented by this hallway, particularly in one of its nook-ish areas, is its almost complete lack of natural light from the second floor. This absence means that the chosen paint color, Benjamin Moore’s Dove Wing, constantly shifts its perception between a soft gray and a warm beige, depending on an intricate dance of light factors. Everything from whether the overhead lights are on or off, the specific color temperature of the light bulbs, the ambient light filtering up from the windows on the floor below, to even whether the guest bathroom light is illuminated, subtly alters the hue. This dynamic interplay of light makes selecting the perfect neutral color even more crucial, as it needs to be versatile enough to look appealing under a myriad of conditions, adapting beautifully throughout the day and night.

Ceiling and Imperfections: The Final Touches
Beyond the walls, I also had the daunting task of painting the ceiling, which is now, thankfully, finished. While I’ll delve into more specific tips on painting a textured ceiling, especially from an awkward height like this, in a future post, the immediate satisfaction of completing it is immense. Furthermore, a few spots on the walls will likely need one final coat of paint, particularly in some of those harder-to-reach areas that proved challenging even with the special ladder. However, for the most part, all the stretching and “yoga” required to lengthen and extend my reach seems to have paid off. It’s a testament to the physical demands of DIY painting! As you might notice, there are a couple of small patching spots where the unsupported drywall gave a little when my full weight pressed against it while on the ladder – an unfortunate but sometimes necessary “cost of progress” to reach those elusive corners. A little tape and some mud should quickly resolve these minor imperfections. The key takeaway, though, is undeniable: this hallway, visible from the moment one enters the house, is no longer the dark, uninviting cavern it once was. It’s now a bright, welcoming passage that contributes positively to the overall feel of our home.

A Seamless Transition: Connecting Spaces with Cohesive Color
While I don’t have an updated picture looking up from the bottom of the stairs just yet, I can give you a clearer idea of that angle by referring to this previous view of the bottom half. Imagine that old tan is now transformed into a sophisticated light gray-beige, providing a harmonious transition as you ascend. That previously patchy mess in the back left corner now beautifully frames my vibrant blue dining room, creating a striking yet cohesive visual flow. And the sliver of the kitchen visible on the right looks significantly less like a construction zone and more like this inviting, refreshed space. Reflecting on these changes, it’s truly amazing to realize just how much progress has been made across the various interconnected areas of the house – far more than I had initially given myself credit for!

The Perfect Hue: Benjamin Moore Dove Wing
The star of this transformation is Benjamin Moore’s Dove Wing (OC-18), a truly versatile and elegant neutral. While Dove Wing is a Benjamin Moore classic, I opted to have it color-matched to Behr paint. This decision often comes down to personal preference for a particular brand’s formulation, ease of access, or simply cost-effectiveness, without compromising on the desired aesthetic. This particular shade is renowned for its chameleon-like qualities, appearing as a soft, warm gray in some lights and a delicate, creamy beige in others, making it an ideal choice for spaces with varying light conditions. Its subtle undertones prevent it from ever looking stark or cold, instead imbuing the space with a comforting warmth and sophisticated lightness.
Why a Consistent Palette Works Wonders
This isn’t the first time Dove Wing has graced my walls. I’ve previously painted my entryway and lower hallway, the upper hallway, and the living room with this very same color. The reason for this consistent application is practical and aesthetic: each of these areas seamlessly flows into the other without any natural stopping points. There are no definitive architectural breaks that would call for a change in color. In such open-concept or interconnected layouts, maintaining a consistent wall color creates a harmonious visual journey throughout the home, making the entire space feel larger, more cohesive, and inherently more sophisticated. It’s essentially the wall version of “The Song That Never Ends” – and if you clicked on that, you’re welcome for the next four days of it being delightfully stuck in your head!
Looking Forward: Personal Reflections and Future Decor
Looking back, I’m not entirely sure what I was thinking when I originally painted the hallway that heavy tan color. The fault is most definitely mine, a clear example of how living in a house for a while truly exposes your own initial design mistakes and evolving tastes. It’s funny how our perspectives shift, and what once seemed acceptable can later feel utterly out of place. Regardless, with this stunning new backdrop, I believe it’s finally time to start gathering some of those awesome prints I’ve been diligently ordering from Etsy and get cracking on creating a beautiful gallery wall. This will be the perfect way to fill all that newly painted, pristine wall space, adding personality and visual interest. Additionally, upgrading the upstairs hallway light bulb to one with a better wattage will further enhance the brightness and true rendering of the new paint color, ensuring the space is always beautifully illuminated.
