More often than not, it ends with me looking like I’m auditioning for a slapstick comedy, trying desperately to prevent the extended monster from toppling over backward. It’s an exercise in frustration and, frankly, quite ridiculous.

Beyond the balance challenges, my exterior home environment adds another layer of complexity. The mature bushes lining the front of my house preclude placing a ladder directly adjacent to the wall. This forces me to position any ladder further out, requiring a longer reach for even simple tasks. Consequently, my trusty shorter ladder, perfect for indoor projects, becomes useless outdoors for anything beyond the lowest windows. This leaves me with only one option: my enormous, incredibly heavy extension ladder – the one that reaches the second story. While capable, its unwieldy length makes it incredibly cumbersome. My neighbors, I’m sure, find my antics highly entertaining as I trudge out with it, drop it to reposition, lean it against a bush to catch my breath, and finally, with a mighty heave, hoist it into place. Despite its evident durability and solid construction, it felt incredibly portable – a far cry from the awkward heft of my old ladder. I began extending the top rungs, pausing when I reached the perfect height to access the area between my top and bottom windows for some much-needed caulking and painting. The ladder felt remarkably stable even when extended, allowing me to comfortably hold it with one hand and snap a picture with the other – a feat unimaginable with my old, top-heavy behemoth.

Stability and Safety: Confidence in Every Step

Working on home projects solo often presents significant safety concerns, especially when climbing tall ladders without someone to steady the base. Despite the Extend-A-Step’s visibly thinner rungs and side rails compared to my traditional ladder, it felt just as sturdy and secure underfoot. While I admit to a slight inherent nervousness with ladders (a lingering effect from my dad’s unfortunate roof fall and shattered wrist during my high school years), the Extend-A-Step instilled a sense of comfort and reliability that surprised me. Unfortunately, I discovered firsthand that these warnings, numerous as they are, are entirely justified. The rungs collapse into each other like a set of Russian nesting dolls. To retract a rung, you simultaneously depress the two large black buttons on each side, which causes the rung above to slide down rapidly into the lower one.

It is paramount to keep your hands completely clear of the space between the collapsing rungs, lest you risk a painful pinch or worse. And yes, you can probably guess that I speak from personal experience. While the ladder feels light and manageable compared to a traditional model, the individual rungs still possess significant weight and descend with surprising speed. This rapid retraction is fantastic for saving time, but it demands unwavering attention to prevent injury. I ended up pinching my right ring finger – no broken skin, thankfully, just a noticeable bruise.

Occasionally, a rung might not slide down perfectly evenly, getting momentarily “hung up” on one side. The natural inclination is to try and guide it. This is precisely when accidents can happen, as the rung might suddenly dislodge and snap down. I found that about 20% of the time, a rung would stick slightly. My solution was to move my hands down to the next rung, carefully positioning my fingers out of harm’s way, and then depressing those buttons. This action would typically cause both the stuck rung and the one below it to snap down together, realigning everything safely. While this is a minor design quirk, it underscores the importance of mindful operation during retraction.

Final Verdict: A Ladder I Can Truly Love

Considering that finger-pinching is a potential hazard even with traditional extension ladders, this minor issue doesn’t deter me. Especially when weighed against the Extend-A-Step’s numerous advantages, it easily fulfills every item on my ladder wish list. For added convenience, it comes with a durable fabric strap to secure the compacted rungs and a protective cover for storage. And speaking of storage, the difference is night and day: a mere 2.5-foot footprint compared to the cumbersome 8 feet of a standard extension ladder.
