Tiling a Bathroom for Kit at Black Feather Farm

Embarking on a home improvement journey can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also a path often paved with unexpected detours and stalled projects. As shared in Part 1 and Part 2 of my Black Feather Farm adventure, my visit with Kit from DIYDiva.net was initially spontaneous, without a strict agenda. However, as any seasoned DIY enthusiast knows, when two passionate renovators gather, a project is bound to emerge. During my initial walk-through of her charming farmhouse, amidst lively conversations about our endless to-do lists, I peered into her upstairs guest bathroom and encountered a sight all too familiar to the dedicated do-it-yourselfer: a project paused mid-stride.

The scene before me was a snapshot of aspiration and interruption. Back in March, Kit had bravely embarked on the ambitious task of tiling her bathroom, a significant step in transforming the space. Yet, for reasons entirely understandable to anyone balancing life with renovation, the work had come to a halt, leaving the bathroom in a state of suspended animation for many months. It’s a common narrative in the world of DIY, where grand plans often contend with the practicalities of daily life, unexpected demands, and the sheer mental and physical exhaustion that comes with doing it all yourself.

I certainly wasn’t in a position to cast judgment. My own primary bathroom has languished in a similar state since being completely gutted, making zero progress towards completion. Life on a farm, with its daily rhythm of feeding donkeys and corralling escapee chickens from the kitchen, only amplifies these challenges. So, instead of a critical eye, I saw an opportunity. With nothing else pressing during my visit, a clear thought emerged: why not lend a hand and help Kit conquer this stalled shower tile project? It felt like a perfect blend of friendship, productivity, and shared DIY spirit.

Transforming a Stalled Project into a Shared Success

The idea quickly gained momentum. Earlier that day, Kit had wistfully expressed how much she longed for a hot bath to combat the biting Michigan winters. The thought of transforming her current unfinished space into a cozy sanctuary was a powerful motivator. Adding to this, I noticed that all the necessary supplies were already on hand – large boxes of tile stacked patiently, seemingly itching to be installed. Kit also confessed to feeling utterly exhausted, a sentiment many DIYers can relate to. This wasn’t just about finishing a bathroom; it was about providing a much-needed break and contributing to her comfort. The path was clear: slip into a comfortable tee, crack open a bottle of beer, fire up my favorite music playlist, and dive into the satisfying work of tiling.

The beauty of DIY often lies in its communal aspect. What might feel like an overwhelming task when faced alone transforms into an enjoyable challenge with a friend by your side. We began by assessing the existing progress and planning our approach. Tiling, while seemingly straightforward, requires precision, patience, and a bit of muscle. Mixing the thin-set to the right consistency, carefully applying it, and then meticulously setting each tile demands focus. The rhythm of the work, the shared laughter, and the occasional strategic pause for a sip of beer created a memorable experience, not just a completed task.

Looking back, I probably should have paid more attention to just how tired Kit truly was. Despite her exhaustion, she gamely stayed with me for the entirety of the first day, deftly juggling occasional work-from-home meetings with the physical demands of tiling. Her dedication was inspiring, a true testament to her DIY spirit. The following afternoon, while Kit was at work, I pressed on, determined to complete one entire side of the shower. By evening, with Kit back home, we teamed up once more to finish the last remaining wall, fueled by determination and, yes, a generous amount of beer.

The Tiling Process: Challenges, Ingenuity, and Camaraderie

Our collaborative tiling marathon was a lively affair filled with much more than just thin-set and tiles. There was a copious amount of beer consumed, punctuated by the occasional expletive when a tile didn’t quite cooperate, and plenty of lighthearted goofing around. These moments of levity are, in many ways, just as crucial as the physical labor, forging memories and strengthening bonds. We started with a vision, and with each tile placed, the transformation began to take shape. The process was a tangible representation of progress, moving from the “before” state of dormant potential to the “during” phase of active creation.

As we progressed, the walls began to tell a story of dedication. Each tile, carefully leveled and spaced, brought us closer to the finished product. We meticulously worked through sections, ensuring proper adhesion and alignment. Tiling isn’t just about sticking tiles on a wall; it involves careful measurement, strategic cuts, and a keen eye for detail. The satisfaction of seeing a blank wall gradually covered in uniform, beautiful tiles is immense. It’s a testament to patience and the cumulative effect of small, precise actions.

Working in unison, we developed a rhythm, one mixing, one setting, or both focusing on specific sections. The challenge of fitting tiles around fixtures and into corners required careful planning and precise cuts, often using a wet saw for a clean finish. It’s in these moments of problem-solving that a DIYer’s resourcefulness truly shines. Every obstacle became an opportunity for collaboration and shared learning, turning potential frustrations into moments of triumph.

Kit, ever the DIYDiva, brought her own brand of ingenuity to the project. Faced with specific challenges in tile placement or cutting, she often found clever, practical solutions that made the process smoother and more efficient. This ability to think on your feet and adapt to unexpected situations is a hallmark of an experienced home renovator. Whether it was devising a temporary support system for a challenging tile placement or finding a creative way to measure an awkward angle, her resourcefulness was invaluable.

In the spirit of sharing our DIY journey, we also utilized Periscope each night to provide live updates on our progress. These sessions, captured for posterity and available in my previous post, offer a candid glimpse into the reality of late-night DIY. Viewers were treated to the entertaining spectacle of two slightly overtired women attempting to coherently discuss tiling techniques while making genuinely weird jokes. It was a fun way to connect with the wider DIY community, showcasing not just the work, but the laughter and camaraderie that comes with it. It highlighted the relatable, sometimes messy, but always rewarding, side of home improvement.

The Almost-Finished Masterpiece: Learning from Imperfections

And then, finally, the walls were covered. The transformation was remarkable, even if not quite perfect. The guest bathroom, once a symbol of a project in limbo, now boasted beautifully tiled shower walls, hinting at the cozy retreat it was destined to become. The clean lines and fresh appearance breathed new life into the space, a testament to what can be achieved with a little dedication and a lot of teamwork.

The sense of accomplishment was palpable. Standing back and admiring the almost-finished work, we felt a profound satisfaction. It wasn’t just about placing tiles; it was about bringing a long-stalled vision to life. The once-bare walls now gleamed, ready for the final touches that would complete the bathroom’s renovation. This stage, where the bulk of the work is done and the finish line is in sight, is often the most gratifying for any DIY enthusiast.

Another view of the completed tiling work

However, as with most DIY projects, our journey was not without its minor hiccups. Wouldn’t you know it, we ended up being short by a single bullnose tile! This common DIY conundrum—being just one crucial piece away from completion—can be both frustrating and ironically amusing. It’s a reminder that even with careful planning, unexpected shortages can occur, often adding an extra trip to the store or a moment of creative problem-solving.

Eagle-eyed DIYers among you might also spot another subtle imperfection: the tile in the left-hand corner doesn’t quite line up perfectly. This minor misalignment was the result of using two different brands of 1/8″ spacers. While both were labeled as the same size, in reality, they created the slightest discrepancy in spacing. This minute difference, over several rows of tiles, accumulated to cause a noticeable shift in the grout lines – a common pitfall when one is, perhaps, half a bottle of wine in at midnight not paying absolute, undivided attention. We mixed and matched spacers on the first two walls, but for the final wall, the one with the shower fixtures, we opted for just one type. By the time we noticed the misalignment, the initial section had already begun to cure, making adjustments impossible.

Ultimately, this small detail is likely to bother only the person who did the installing. The average guest taking a shower would probably never notice. This experience served as a valuable lesson learned in the trenches of DIY: always use the same kind of tile spacers consistently throughout a project. Alternatively, avoid attempting precise work after a few drinks, or simply maintain unwavering focus on the task at hand. Or, perhaps, embrace a combination of these strategies! I won’t judge, as the realities of DIY often involve learning through experience, and sometimes, those experiences include minor imperfections that add character to a handmade project.

The Ultimate Reward: A Cozy Retreat for Winter

Despite these minor setbacks, the overwhelming feeling was one of triumph. We (nearly!) finished it! This means Kit is now a significant step closer to enjoying a warm, cozy bath in her beautifully updated upstairs bathroom this winter. The thought of her being able to relax and unwind in that space after a long day on the farm fills me with satisfaction.

The experience underscored the immense value of a helping hand, the joy of collaborative effort, and the unique bond forged through shared DIY projects. It wasn’t just about laying tiles; it was about partnership, problem-solving, and the sheer delight of bringing a vision to life. I hope Kit enjoys her revitalized bathroom as much as I enjoyed the entire process of working on it with her. This project stands as a testament to the power of friendship and the fulfilling journey of transforming a house into a home, one tile at a time.
