My Four Bright Spots

Life often feels like a whirlwind, a blur of deadlines, travel, and commitments, making moments of reflection all the more precious. As I take a moment to pause and gather my thoughts, I realize the immense value in appreciating the small victories and significant milestones that punctuate our journey. This past week has been a profound reminder of exactly that, filled with a beautiful blend of joy, remembrance, community, and the thrill of new adventures. Join me as I unwrap the tapestry of the last seven days, highlighting four truly good things that have brought warmth and perspective to my world.

A collection of four inspiring images representing good things in life

First: A Heartfelt Journey Home to Wisconsin

The week kicked off with a much-anticipated trip back to my roots in Wisconsin. Though Atlanta has been home for most of my life, my birthplace lies just 40 minutes outside Milwaukee, and the connection to my family there remains as strong as ever. There’s a unique comfort in returning to the places that shaped you, a sense of belonging that few other experiences can replicate. This visit was particularly meaningful, weaving together moments of joyous celebration and quiet remembrance.

A Beautiful Family Celebration: My Cousin’s Wedding

One of the primary reasons for my return was to witness my cousin exchange vows. Weddings are always a wonderful occasion for families to gather, reconnect, and celebrate love, and this one was no exception. What truly captivated me were the flowers—they embodied a minimalist elegance that was simply stunning. In an era where elaborate displays often dominate, their understated beauty was a breath of fresh air, proving that sometimes, less truly is more. The simplicity allowed the genuine emotion and happiness of the day to shine through, creating a truly memorable and intimate atmosphere.

Honoring a Cherished Life: A Memorial Service for My Grandmother

Amidst the celebration, there was also a somber yet peaceful occasion: a memorial service for my grandmother. Some of you may recall my earlier post about her passing a few months prior. This trip “home” provided the perfect opportunity for our family to come together and give her a proper farewell. It was a day filled with shared stories, laughter, and, of course, a healthy measure of grief as we reminisced about her life and the profound impact she had on each of us. Despite the sadness of loss, the gathering felt incredibly peaceful and ultimately, a happy occasion as we celebrated her enduring spirit. Such moments underscore the importance of family bonds and the healing power of collective memory.

Embracing Local Culture: A Brewery Tour

In true Wisconsinite fashion, our day concluded with a tour of a local brewery. This wasn’t just about enjoying a refreshing beverage; it was about immersing ourselves in a significant part of the state’s cultural heritage. Wisconsin has a rich brewing tradition, and experiencing it firsthand, from the robust aroma of fresh hops—which truly smelled amazing!—to understanding the craft behind each pint, was a delightful way to honor our roots. We all agreed that Granny, with her appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, would have thoroughly approved of our day. And, of course, no trip to Wisconsin would be complete without indulging in the local culinary delights. I must confess to having consumed an utterly unreasonable amount of cheese and butter toffee popcorn. And you know what? I regret absolutely nothing. It’s these small, indulgent pleasures that make travel so memorable.

Second: The Power of Community & Home Safety Awareness

The second big takeaway from my week was a powerful affirmation of the incredible community that has gathered around this blog, particularly in response to a recent giveaway. Holy cow, you guysreallywant a smoke detector! This past week truly tested the limits of my ability to manage blog operations remotely. While I was out of town, my phone app for approving comments decided to malfunction for three straight days. This would normally be a minor inconvenience, but it became a significant challenge because I had just launched a major giveaway right before hopping on a plane. Logging in tonight, I was greeted by well over a hundred unapproved comments—a testament to your overwhelming enthusiasm! This experience brought a couple of key things to light:

Overwhelming Response to the Giveaway

  • Clear Demand for Safety: Your eagerness for this giveaway clearly shows that home safety devices, like advanced smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, are not just desirable but essential. It’s fantastic to see such a strong emphasis on protecting our homes and loved ones. This feedback is invaluable, and I’ll certainly make an effort to host more giveaways like this in the future, focusing on products that genuinely enhance daily life and security.

  • A Hilarious, Yet Teachable Moment: A handful of observant readers quickly pointed out my rather significant mistake: I had mistakenly referred to the device as a “CO2 detector.” For those who might have napped during science class that day, CO2 (carbon dioxide) is the gas we exhale, while CO (carbon monoxide) is the dangerous, odorless, and colorless gas that these detectors are designed to detect. I made this error in the title of the post, which, of course, is what gets shared across all social media platforms. And, with family matters taking precedence, I didn’t check comments for several days. My “derp level” was truly expert-tier! It provided a good laugh, and honestly, it’s a relatable blogging blunder. I won’t pretend it’s my last mistake, especially since I’m prone to typing after a beer or two. But hopefully, it at least brought a smile to your face while highlighting the crucial difference between CO and CO2 detection.

  • Extended Opportunities: For those still hoping to enter, there are still a couple of days left! And to increase your chances, my friend Jocie over at One Project Closer is running the exact same giveaway until the end of the week. So, if you’re looking to double your entries and boost your odds, make sure to head over to her blog and click on the entry widget. It’s a great example of how the DIY blogging community supports each other and offers more opportunities to our readers.

Third: Diving Deep into DIY Documentation

My third focus for the week has been immersed in a significant DIY project recap. I’m currently working diligently on the second installment of the laundry room makeover project recap that I began last week. What started as a seemingly straightforward update has evolved into an incredibly detailed and surprisingly long series. This particular makeover was part of an online TV project, which means the level of detail, planning, and documentation required is extensive. I’m determined not to leave out any crucial information, tips, or behind-the-scenes insights, which means this post is shaping up to be quite comprehensive. The challenge lies in condensing so much content into an engaging and digestible format without sacrificing any valuable takeaways for you, my readers. My hope is to have a little more dedicated downtime starting tomorrow evening, after yet another flight, to finalize the details and get it ready for publishing. Documenting these transformations isn’t just about showcasing the “after” but also sharing the journey, the challenges, and the learning experiences along the way, inspiring others to tackle their own home improvement dreams.

Fourth: The Unveiling of a Long-Awaited Friendship

And now for what I believe is the most awesome news of the week, as some of you eagle-eyed followers have already spied! My incredibly witty and equally “shit-talking” internet friend, Kit, famously known as the “DIY Diva” behind the “Black Feather Farm” blog DIY Diva, has been meticulously painting her guest bedroom in preparation for a very special visitor. Did you guess it’s for me? Because IT IS! The anticipation has been building, and the secret is finally out!

From Virtual Chats to Real-Life Adventures

It’s a truly surreal thought. Despite the fact that Kit and I regularly engage in all the typical friend activities—texting about boys, sharing a virtual beer while chatting away, and engaging in good-natured smack talk about who is going to paint a better staircase (cough cough, clearly me), and virtually everything else under the sun—we have, incredibly, never actually met in person. After five or so years of getting to know another human being through screens and keyboards, it seemed only fair that the minor inconvenience of being just a single state away (which, according to my flight itinerary, still involves at least one connecting flight, sheesh!) was more than enough reason to finally bridge the digital divide and visit. So, I am going! This isn’t just a casual visit; it’s the culmination of years of virtual camaraderie and a testament to the powerful bonds that can form within the online DIY community.

Embracing the Farm Life

I am beyond excited to meet her beloved “nugs” (her adorable chickens, I presume!) and donkeys, ruin my shoes tromping around her beautiful Black Feather Farm, and try my absolute best not to get stung by any bees. You know, all the quintessential farm stuff! It promises to be an authentic and immersive experience, far removed from the usual city bustle. This trip symbolizes more than just meeting a friend; it’s an adventure into a different way of life, an opportunity to experience the realities of farm living firsthand, and to create new, tangible memories that have long existed only in our imaginations. Betting you a whole case of beer: it’s going to be pretty damn awesome, a true highlight of the year.
