Primary Bathroom Shower Makeover: The Grand Reveal
Honestly, I love my new shower so much, I might just move in permanently! The feeling of stepping into this revitalized space is nothing short of euphoric. What was once a source of constant frustration has transformed into a serene, spa-like sanctuary. Every morning, this shower isn’t just a place to get clean; it’s a moment of calm, a fresh start to the day, and a daily reminder of what perseverance can achieve.
As I gaze at these stunning photographs, a profound sense of accomplishment washes over me. Where you might simply see a beautifully renovated shower, I see the culmination of countless decisions and meticulous execution. My eyes trace each element: the strategic space planning that maximized both light and height, the carefully selected handcrafted tile, the sleek shower head, the precision of the grout lines, the flawless caulk, the custom crown molding, and the crisp ceiling paint. I vividly recall the “before” – a stark contrast that still lingers in my mind (keep scrolling down the post for a glimpse of its former state!). Renovating a bathroom is undoubtedly a stressful and often messy endeavor, especially when, like me, you take on both the design and the labor for the entire room. There were so many hurdles to overcome that I affectionately started calling it my “bad luck bathroom” – the room that simply refused to be finished.
Finding New Inspiration: Sparking the Design
For a long time, the primary bathroom renovation stalled. Despite my best efforts to push through, I simply couldn’t find that crucial “wow” factor, that singular design element that would reignite my passion and drive the project forward. This all changed earlier this year after an inspiring trip to Chicago with Delta Faucet. I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical initially, wondering if I’d truly find direct inspiration for my specific bathroom challenges. However, as fate would have it, the city’s unique charm provided an unexpected muse. The handcrafted surface of my new shower tile bears an uncanny resemblance to the beautiful, rippling effect of Chicago’s iconic waterfront – a subtle yet profound connection that became the cornerstone of my design vision.
Beyond the waterfront, the way natural light playfully bounces off the delicate texture of the tile also evokes memories of the absolutely gorgeous and painstakingly intricate tile work I admired in some of Chicago’s historic architectural gems. These weren’t just buildings; they were masterpieces of design, showcasing artistry that truly resonated with the vision I was trying to cultivate for my own space.
Returning from that inspiring trip, I had a completely new plan and a clear understanding of what was truly missing from my primary bathroom. The old shower wasn’t just outdated; it was a roadblock to the room’s full potential. It had to go, making way for a design that was fresh, reflective, and deeply personal.
The entire process of removing the old shower, meticulously prepping the space, and finally installing the new elements spanned several intensive weeks. It was a monumental undertaking, fraught with the typical challenges of a DIY renovation. Yet, standing back and admiring the finished product, I can confidently say it was 100% worth every ounce of effort and every moment of labor. The transformation is profound, and the reward of seeing my vision come to life is immeasurable.
What truly sets this shower apart is the choice of tile. Unlike conventional subway tile, the handcrafted variety boasts organic edges and an undulating surface that truly comes alive. It’s designed to reflect and refract light in all directions, especially when the window is open, creating a dynamic, shimmering effect. These pictures, as lovely as they are, simply cannot capture the true magic – the way the tile glitters and dances when the light hits it just right, transforming the entire space into something ethereal and captivating.
To fully embrace the spa-like potential, I even placed a candle in the corner of the tub, just to help me visualize the ultimate relaxing candlelit bath in this beautiful new setting. The thought alone fills me with excitement – I truly cannot wait to indulge in that serene experience!

The subtle interplay between the flowing tile and the crisp fixture introduces a beautiful softness, resulting in a bathroom that feels both sophisticated and inviting. Another element of this master bathroom renovation that fills me with particular pride is the innovative crown molding I added to the very top of the shower tile. Initially, I was stumped by how to seamlessly transition the pronounced edge of the tile and its trim into the adjacent wall. The solution, born out of necessity and a bit of creative thinking, involved flipping a piece of baseboard molding upside down and attaching it to the wall, then installing the crown molding on top of that. This ingenious technique not only made the molding appear even more substantial and impressive but also skillfully avoided any awkward cuts where the molding meets the tile. Even with the new white tile extending all the way to the ceiling, I wanted to ensure the room had enough vibrant color to maintain visual interest while still preserving an overall neutral palette and a sense of calm. Green, while not my usual go-to color, captivated me when I stumbled upon this outdoor leaf print fabric a few months ago. I knew instantly it had to be integrated into a project. The shower curtain, a complete DIY creation, perfectly introduces that touch of organic freshness and subtle pattern the room needed.
