For any dedicated DIY enthusiast or creative crafter, the concept of a group challenge is undeniably appealing. Over the past year, I’ve had the immense pleasure of participating in several collaborative DIY challenges, each a unique opportunity to push creative boundaries and connect with a vibrant community. These challenges often come with a distinctive graphic that symbolizes our shared endeavor, like the one you see below. It’s a testament to the collective spirit that fuels these projects, bringing together diverse talents under a common theme. These collaborations have been instrumental in fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared passion, transforming individual projects into a larger, inspiring movement within the DIY world.
The structure of these challenges is elegantly simple yet incredibly effective. A different host takes the helm each time, carefully selecting a unifying theme that sparks inspiration across the group. Those of us who are able to commit the time then embark on our respective projects, all working towards a common goal. On a pre-determined date, we proudly link up our completed works, showcasing the diverse interpretations of the theme. This process cultivates not only a fantastic sense of accountability, helping us tackle projects that might otherwise languish on our to-do lists, but also transforms into a truly creative exploration. It’s an inspiring display of ingenuity and skill, where each participant’s unique perspective enriches the overall experience. For me, these challenges offer a dual benefit: they provide the much-needed motivation to complete tasks promptly – often the biggest hurdle in any DIY endeavor – and they allow me to marvel at the exceptional talent displayed by my fellow creators. Witnessing the innovative solutions and artistic expressions from others is always a highlight, pushing me to think more broadly about my own projects.

My Journey Through DIY Challenges: Growth, Learning, and a Dash of Ambition
Participating in these group DIY challenges has been a profound journey of self-discovery and skill enhancement. In the past, my feelings about my completed projects have varied wildly – from immense pride at overcoming a complex task to a touch of humility when the outcome wasn’t quite what I envisioned. Yet, this fluctuation in satisfaction is precisely the essence of these challenges. They are designed to encourage ambition, to push us beyond our comfort zones, and to truly test our capabilities. The goal is to see if we can not just complete a project, but truly excel at it, to “ROCK this” as it were. Given that my blogging niche is less about refined woodworking and more about the raw, often messy, and utterly authentic process of “complete do-it-yourself sh*tshow” – as I affectionately call it – these challenges have been invaluable. Each mistake has been a lesson, and every success has been a boost, collectively expanding my general knowledge, refining my practical skills, and significantly increasing my confidence in tackling new endeavors. And, I must admit, without fail, they always ignite a fervent desire for more tools. The thrill of creating something new, even with its inevitable setbacks, is incredibly rewarding. These experiences underscore the beauty of the DIY process: it’s not just about the finished product, but the learning, adapting, and growing that happens along the way. Here are a couple of examples of my past challenge entries:
The journey through these challenges has not only honed my technical skills but also broadened my creative perspective. From simple scrap wood projects that teach resourcefulness to more intricate organization solutions that demand precision, each task has contributed to my growth as a DIYer. The act of sharing these projects with a supportive community, receiving feedback, and drawing inspiration from others’ work creates a powerful feedback loop that propels continued improvement. It’s a dynamic environment where practical application meets artistic expression, fostering a continuous cycle of learning and achievement. These visual examples of my previous work serve as milestones in this ongoing adventure, each representing a completed project and a step forward in my DIY capabilities.
A New Adventure: I’m Hosting the Next DIY Challenge!
All this brings me to a truly exciting announcement: next week, on Wednesday, June 15th, I will be stepping into the role of host for this group DIY challenge! This is a significant milestone for me, one that carries a delightful mix of anticipation and nerves. It means one of two thrilling scenarios will unfold: either it will be as phenomenally successful and inspiring as all the previous challenges I’ve participated in, or it will devolve into a spectacular, entertaining disaster where I learn a great deal from everyone schooling me. Either way, I promise it will make for a highly engaging and memorable post for all of you, my wonderful readers. The first and most crucial task on my hosting agenda was to select a theme – a concept that would inspire and unite all participants.
I’m certainly no stranger to the responsibilities of hosting a creative challenge. I’ve previously co-hosted a popular Pinterest-themed challenge ages ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed the competitive yet collaborative spirit of two Dueling DIY challenges focused on specific areas of my home, one for my staircase transformation and another for my kitchen renovation. (Side note: I truly miss the playful smack talk from those duels and definitely need to orchestrate another one soon!) However, this time, the objective is slightly different. Instead of focusing on a specific room or a broad category, the aim is to establish a singular, inspiring theme that everyone can creatively interpret through their DIY projects. Given my recent deep dive into numerous outdoor projects and my current obsession with all things botanical, the theme I’ve chosen feels perfectly aligned with my creative flow: **LIVING DIY!**
Introducing the “LIVING DIY” Challenge: Bring Nature Indoors (and Out!)
The “LIVING DIY” theme is intentionally broad, designed to encompass a vast array of creative project ideas that celebrate the integration of living elements into our DIY endeavors. Imagine crafting beautiful hanging air plant displays, constructing intricate succulent terrariums, building custom planters for indoor or outdoor greenery, designing charming birdhouses, or even creating practical pet feeders (like the custom one I’ve been eager to build for my beloved Charlie). The possibilities are truly endless, limited only by your imagination and the fundamental guideline: it must be a DIY project that involves something living, with the clear exclusion of people. I specify “not a person” because technically, almost any home improvement project benefits a person, which would broaden the theme to an unmanageable degree. We want to keep the focus on flora and fauna, on projects that breathe life into our spaces. And, on a slightly humorous but firm note, please – no goldfish toilets, okay? Let’s maintain a standard of design and ethics!

This theme is particularly relevant in today’s world, where there’s a growing appreciation for biophilic design and bringing the calming influence of nature into our daily lives. “LIVING DIY” encourages sustainable practices, fosters a deeper connection with the natural world, and adds a unique, dynamic element to traditional DIY projects. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a plant parent, or just someone looking to add a touch of green to your home, this challenge provides the perfect impetus to get creative. Think beyond just pots and soil; consider vertical gardens, custom propagation stations, insect hotels, or even creative ways to display cut flowers year-round. The beauty of this theme lies in its adaptability, allowing for projects of varying complexity and skill levels, ensuring that everyone can find an inspiring angle.
