My Madcap 2017 Christmas Dinner with the Fogles

My First Christmas Hosting at the Ugly Duckling House: A Festive Blend of Renovation Pride, Family, and Happy Chaos

For years, the thought of hosting Christmas at the Ugly Duckling House (UDH) felt like a distant dream, nestled somewhere between completing major renovations and mastering the art of not accidentally burning down my kitchen. If you’ve been following my journey, you might recall the ongoing saga of transforming this fixer-upper into a dream home. And if you’ve ever wondered whether I’d survive my inaugural Christmas hosting duties without calling the fire department, wonder no more! You can always catch up on the UDH transformation here, but for now, let’s dive into the heartwarming, slightly chaotic, and utterly memorable highlights of our first Christmas gathering.

This year, the UDH finally opened its doors wide for a full-blown family Christmas celebration, marking a significant milestone on my long list of homeownership goals. After countless hours of sanding, painting, hammering, and problem-solving, seeing this house filled with laughter, love, and the joyful buzz of family was incredibly gratifying. It’s one thing to complete a DIY project; it’s another entirely to witness your loved ones making memories within the spaces you’ve poured your heart and soul into. The spirit of Christmas truly brought the UDH to life in a way no renovation ever could alone.

Despite the inevitable festive pandemonium that accompanies any large family gathering, I’m thrilled to report that my hosting debut was a roaring success on the safety front. There were absolutely zero accidental fires, much to my relief and everyone else’s peace of mind! The only blaze permitted was the one crackling merrily in the fireplace, casting a warm, inviting glow that perfectly encapsulated the cozy atmosphere we aimed for. It truly was a testament to how far this house has come, providing a beautiful backdrop for new holiday traditions.

Welcoming the Festive Frenzy: Guests, Gifts, and a Pack of Pups

The moment the first car pulled into the driveway, a flurry of excitement and activity erupted. Guests streamed in, arms laden with beautifully wrapped presents and spirits high. The energy was palpable, a mix of holiday cheer and the gentle chaos that comes with reuniting loved ones. Each family member brought not just gifts, but also their unique warmth and personality, instantly transforming the renovated spaces into a vibrant hub of holiday cheer. Seeing the faces of my family light up as they took in the festive decorations and the familiar comforts of the UDH was a reward in itself, making every single DIY struggle worth it.

Of course, no gathering at the UDH would be complete without a healthy dose of canine companionship. And when your extended family collectively owns six dogs, you can expect the festive energy to reach peak levels of delightful disorder. We had a delightful, albeit slightly messy, incident involving a surprise “gift” left on the floor by one of our four-legged guests. While I won’t be sharing any photos of that particular mishap, it certainly added a memorable, if slightly unglamorous, anecdote to the day’s events. Such is the reality of a truly pet-friendly Christmas!

And then there was the fur. Oh, the fur! I swear we had just finished a thorough vacuuming session an hour before everyone arrived, but within moments of the canine contingent’s entry, it was as if a snowstorm of pet hair had swept through the house. Every surface seemed to sprout a new layer of fluff, a clear testament to the joyous romp underway. It was a minor detail, easily overlooked amidst the laughter and the heartwarming sight of so many happy faces – both human and doggo – enjoying the warmth of our renovated home.

Meet the Christmas Canines: Our Four-Legged Guests

To truly appreciate the multi-dog dimension of our Christmas, let me introduce the furry cast of characters who brought an extra layer of joyful pandemonium to the UDH:

Charlie + Stella: The Dynamic Duo

First up is Charlie, my faithful companion, who usually enjoys the run of the house. He’s a sweet, mellow boy who sometimes gets a bit overwhelmed by too many new faces (and paws!). Joining him was Stella, my boyfriend K’s adorable mini dachshund. If you haven’t met K (my not-so-new boyfriend anymore!), you’ll quickly learn that Stella is a tiny package overflowing with personality. She’s undeniably cute, but don’t let her size fool you – she’s got an attitude that could rival dogs twice her stature, especially when it comes to claiming her spot on the sofa.

Buddy: The Pooping Menace with a Heart of Gold

Then there’s Buddy, Mom and Dad’s beloved dog, who earned himself the affectionate (and slightly exasperated) moniker of “The Pooping Menace” during the festivities. Despite his rather unfortunate contribution to the holiday decor, I love him dearly. It’s just a little baffling when a guest, even a furry one, expresses their opinion of your home by… well, you know. “Come on, Buddy,” I thought, “my decorating isn’t *that* bad!” His innocent eyes, however, quickly made up for any temporary flooring faux pas.

Lemon, Lana, and Dobby: The Foster Trio

My sister, bless her heart, has a wonderful knack for fostering dogs, though she’s admittedly a “foster mom failure” – she simply can’t seem to part with them! Lemon (the reddish one) and Lana (the sleek black one) are sisters from the same litter, yet they possess wildly different personalities. Lemon is our resident wallflower, preferring to observe from a distance, often found hiding or making a swift retreat from the hustle and bustle. Lana, on the other hand, is a social butterfly, always ready to greet you face-to-face with an enthusiastic sniff and a wagging tail. And then there’s Dobby, the newest addition to her furry brood. This gangly little man is pure charm, a genuine ham for the camera, striking poses as if he were born for the spotlight. His playful antics brought endless amusement to everyone.

The Glorious Chaos of the First Hour and Beyond

With all the human and canine guests accounted for, the first hour of our Christmas celebration at the UDH was a whirlwind of activity and pure, unadulterated holiday chaos. Doors swung open and closed incessantly as people retrieved presents from cars, corralled excited dogs, shed winter coats, and searched for a comfortable spot amidst the festive clutter. There was a flurry of handshakes, warm hugs, and the occasional dash to address a certain “pooping menace’s” oversight (after washing hands, of course!). Appetizers were enthusiastically devoured, conversations buzzed, and the overall atmosphere was one of joyful, if slightly overwhelming, effervescence. The house, which I had painstakingly renovated, was truly living its best life, serving as the perfect, if slightly over-caffeinated, vessel for our family’s holiday spirit.

Adding to the humorous timing of the day, I had, with meticulous precision, spent the entire morning touching up tiny scratches on the black and white staircase – a focal point of the UDH’s aesthetic. My dedication to perfection was admirable, my timing, however, was spectacularly awful. Within minutes of the family’s arrival, the pristine stairs were once again a high-traffic zone for both eager humans and scampering paws, their efforts leaving behind a fresh canvas of potential new scuffs. It was a classic “DIY enthusiast vs. reality” moment, providing a good laugh and a reminder that perfection is often overrated in favor of cherished memories.

It’s moments like these that make you realize that the beauty of a home isn’t just in its flawless finishes, but in the stories it helps create. The UDH, with its freshly painted walls and newly laid floors, was ready for whatever delightful mayhem Christmas could throw its way. The sheer volume of people and pets entering simultaneously was a sight to behold, a joyous torrent of holiday spirit pouring into every nook and cranny of the house.

Festive Feasting and Relaxed Revelry

After the initial whirlwind subsided, a more relaxed rhythm settled over the house. K, my talented boyfriend, took command of the kitchen, orchestrating our Christmas dinner with impressive culinary skill. He decided on succulent steaks for the main course, and I could tell he was deep in concentration, on a quest to perfect his peppercorn sauce recipe. Keep an eye on the recipe section of the UDH blog; you just might find his perfected creation featured there soon!

While K worked his magic in the kitchen, I had the delightful task of entertaining our guests in the living room. The air was filled with chatter, the cozy sounds of a holiday movie playing softly in the background (anyone recognize that classic on the screen?), and the comforting sense of simply being together. It was a wonderful transition from the early excitement to a more intimate, reflective portion of the day, allowing everyone to truly unwind and reconnect. This relaxed atmosphere was exactly what I had envisioned for our first Christmas in the renovated UDH.

And let’s talk about the cheese. Oh, THIS CHEESE! It’s an absolute must-have for any holiday spread, or frankly, any day. By virtue of my Wisconsin birthright, I consider myself an automatic authority on all things cheese, so trust me on this one. It’s called Humbolt Fog by Cypress Grove, and it’s a creamy, tangy, and utterly irresistible masterpiece. This isn’t a sponsored post, nor is it a matter of state pride (it’s not even from Wisconsin!), but I will passionately advocate for everyone to experience the sheer joy of this cheese. I stuffed my face with it, and I highly recommend you do the same!

Capturing Christmas: Family Portraits and Candid Moments

Family Photos and Precious Memories

My mom, ever the traditionalist, asked me to take family pictures with my “nice camera” – a request I was happy to oblige, though I quickly realized the challenge of impromptu portraiture. In hindsight, I wish I’d set up some extra lighting. The spot in front of the beautifully decorated Christmas tree was undoubtedly the best location, offering a festive backdrop. However, photographing moving, laughing people in front of a light source presents a different set of challenges compared to capturing static objects! Despite the technical hurdles, I’m incredibly glad I managed to snap a few precious photos. K and I, being the busy hosts, had to wait until later in the evening for our turn in front of the lens. My sister and her boyfriend are, as you can see, exceptionally photogenic – they made my job much easier!

And, of course, a portrait of Mom and Dad, with the ever-present “Pooping Menace,” Buddy, making a special appearance. These photos, though imperfect, truly capture the warmth and love that filled the UDH that day, becoming treasured mementos of our first Christmas hosting experience.

We all shared a truly wonderful time, filled with the comfortable familiarity of family. The day was mostly spent retelling cherished funny stories, remembering loved ones who couldn’t be with us, and simply making each other laugh. It was a delightful challenge to capture everyone on camera, as they were constantly in motion, sharing anecdotes, and creating new memories. (My goal for 2018? Definitely to master the art of photographing moving targets!). These candid, lively interactions are what truly define a family Christmas.

A Sweet Farewell and Lasting Impressions

As the evening drew to a close, the joyous chaos gradually subsided, leaving behind a wonderfully comforting mess – the kind that signals a truly successful celebration. We distributed presents, watched as each gift was eagerly unwrapped, and savored every last bite of our delicious dinner. As the hours passed, even the most energetic of our canine guests began to tire, their playful antics giving way to peaceful snoozes. Charlie, my own loyal pup, developed his signature adorable droopy ears and sleepy eyes, a clear sign that it was time to wind down. It was then, amidst the lingering warmth of friendship and family, that we knew it was time to bid farewell.

My first experience hosting Christmas at the Ugly Duckling House was everything I could have wished for and more: cozy, delightfully frantic, and undeniably fun. It was a true test of my newly renovated home’s capacity for joy and a deeply satisfying personal milestone. To see the UDH, once a diamond in the rough, transformed into a warm, inviting space filled with the people I love most, was an unparalleled reward. Every DIY project, every late night, every moment of uncertainty faded into insignificance in the glow of that unforgettable Christmas. It was truly a joy to show off all the hard work that went into making this house a home, especially during such a special time of year.
