Modern Square Napkin Rings: An Easy DIY Scrap Wood Project for Elegant Table Settings

Hello, home decor enthusiasts and DIY lovers! I’m Lindi, the creative mind behind Love Create Celebrate, and I’m thrilled to be joining the contributor team here at Ugly Duckling House. For my inaugural project, I’m excited to share a wonderfully simple yet sophisticated DIY that will transform your dinner table: modern square napkin rings! This project is not only incredibly easy to make but also a fantastic way to utilize those often-neglected pieces of scrap wood accumulating in your workshop or garage.

Transforming Your Scrap Wood Pile into Stylish Home Decor

If your garage or basement resembles mine, you likely have a growing collection of scrap wood pieces – remnants from larger woodworking projects, home renovations, or even small craft endeavors. There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from taking these “odds and ends” and transforming them into something truly functional and beautiful. Recently, after working with some 1×6 boards, I found myself with a generous pile of leftover scraps. Instead of letting them gather dust, I decided to challenge myself to create several new projects, and these elegant square napkin rings quickly became a standout favorite.

This project embodies the spirit of practical DIY: it’s incredibly budget-friendly, sustainable, and yields a stunning result that looks far more expensive than it is. Whether you’re a seasoned woodworker or just starting your DIY journey, these napkin rings are designed to be accessible, quick, and immensely rewarding.

This is arguably one of the easiest DIY wood projects you can tackle, perfect for beginners looking to hone their skills or experienced crafters seeking a quick and impactful addition to their home decor. Let’s gather our supplies and get started!

What You Need: Tools & Materials for Your Modern Napkin Rings

Before diving into the steps, ensure you have all your tools and materials ready. While some tools, like a drill press, offer enhanced precision, a handheld drill can also work with careful execution. The key is to prioritize safety and accuracy for the best results.

  • 1×6 Scrap Wood: The star of our project! Look for pieces with interesting grain patterns. Any similar dimensioned scrap wood can work, as long as it’s thick enough to hold its shape after drilling.
  • Saw: A miter saw or table saw is ideal for making precise, straight cuts to create perfectly square blocks. For smaller projects like this, even a steady hand with a handsaw can suffice, though consistency is key.
  • Sander (or Sandpaper): An orbital sander or block sander will make quick work of smoothing the edges. If working by hand, fine-grit sandpaper (120-220 grit) will be essential for a smooth finish.
  • 1 3/8″ Forstner Bit: This specialized drill bit creates clean, flat-bottomed holes, perfect for the smooth interior of your napkin rings. Its design minimizes tear-out, giving you a professional finish.
  • Drill Press: While not strictly mandatory, a drill press offers superior precision and control when drilling through your wood blocks, ensuring perfectly centered and perpendicular holes. It significantly reduces the risk of splitting the wood or drilling at an angle.
  • Wood Stain: Choose a color that complements your home decor. I opted for a “natural” stain to highlight the wood’s inherent beauty.
  • Polycrylic or Varathane: A clear protective topcoat. This will seal the wood, protecting it from moisture and wear, and giving your napkin rings a durable, long-lasting finish.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Crafting Your Elegant Napkin Rings

Follow these simple steps to create a set of beautiful and functional napkin rings that will impress your guests and add a touch of handmade charm to your table.

Step 1: Cutting Your Wood Blocks

Begin by cutting your 1×6 scrap wood into 2.5″ x 2.5″ squares. Precision here is important for a uniform and polished look. You’ll likely want to create a set of 6 or 8 napkin rings, depending on the size of your typical dinner party. Take your time to make clean, straight cuts. Once all your squares are cut, gather them for the next step.

Step 2: Finding the Center Point for Drilling

To ensure your holes are perfectly centered, draw an “X” across each wood square, connecting opposite corners. The point where the two lines intersect will be your precise center point for drilling. This small step makes a big difference in the final aesthetic of your napkin rings.

Step 3: Precision Drilling with a Forstner Bit

Now, it’s time to drill the hole for your napkin ring. This is where a drill press truly shines. Clamp your wood block securely in place on the drill press table. A crucial tip for preventing wood from splitting (known as tear-out) is to place a sacrificial piece of scrap wood directly underneath your napkin ring block. This backing board absorbs the pressure as the drill bit exits your main piece, resulting in a clean, crisp hole.

Carefully align your Forstner bit so that its guiding point is directly above the center mark you drew on your wood square. With the wood firmly clamped and the sacrificial board in place, slowly and steadily drill all the way through the block. The Forstner bit will create a clean, smooth-sided hole, perfect for holding your napkins.

Step 4: Sanding, Staining, and Sealing for a Perfect Finish

With the holes drilled, the final steps are all about refining and protecting your beautiful handmade napkin rings. First, sand all surfaces and edges thoroughly. Start with a medium-grit sandpaper (like 120-150) to smooth out any rough spots or saw marks, then move to a finer grit (220) for a silky-smooth finish. Don’t forget to sand the inside edges of the drilled hole!

Once sanded, wipe away all dust before applying your stain. I chose a “natural” stain because I adore the subtle way it enhances the existing wood grain without drastically changing its color. Apply the stain according to the manufacturer’s instructions, allowing it to penetrate the wood for a few minutes before wiping off any excess. This process brings out the character and depth of the wood, giving each napkin ring a unique charm.

Finally, seal your napkin rings with several coats of Polycrylic or Varathane. This protective layer is essential for durability, especially for items that will be handled frequently and potentially exposed to moisture. Apply thin, even coats, allowing each to dry completely and lightly sanding with a very fine grit (320 or higher) between coats for the smoothest possible finish. This topcoat will ensure your napkin rings last for many dinner parties to come.
