Transforming Our Kitchen: The Grand Arrival and Installation of Walnut Butcher Block Countertops – Part 2
As detailed in yesterday’s post, the initial days of my aunt and uncle’s visit were marked by unexpected challenges. However, with a little strategic help and a lot of teamwork, Wednesday (our Staycation Day 3) unfolded into a truly monumental day for the Ugly Duckling House. We were eagerly awaiting the delivery of our stunning new walnut butcher block countertops from Lumber Liquidators to the local store, so the plan was to tackle as many outstanding tasks as possible until we received that much-anticipated call. It’s truly astonishing what can be achieved when a dedicated group of people puts their heads and hands together for just a few focused hours.
A Day of Productive Progress: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
The morning was a whirlwind of activity, with everyone contributing their unique skills to push our kitchen renovation forward. My aunt, with her meticulous eye, took charge of painting all the fresh molding destined for the dining room. This seemingly small detail plays a significant role in creating a polished, cohesive look, and her dedication ensured every piece was perfectly coated.

Meanwhile, I set up a makeshift outdoor painting station to apply several more coats to the upper cabinet doors. Painting outdoors is a fantastic way to utilize natural light and ventilation, ensuring a smooth, even finish for a professional-looking result. The fresh air and sunshine made the repetitive task much more enjoyable.

And then there was the garage, a space that had long suffered from neglect. My uncle and Timmy, true heroes of organization and completion, dove into transforming the chaotic one-car “pileup” into a functional workspace. They not only tidied the entire area but also finally completed my long-unfinished workbench. I must admit, I had left it about 75% complete for quite some time, getting sidetracked by other projects (a common DIYer’s plight!). While they certainly had their fun teasing me about the delay, the immense satisfaction of having a fully functional workbench made all the previous procrastination worth it. Now, navigating the garage is actually a breeze!

Their contributions didn’t stop there. They also tackled a few lingering issues, including fixing the powder room light fixture and expertly hanging a new mirror. These smaller but equally important tasks collectively brought a renewed sense of order and readiness to the entire house. These guys were, simply put, incredible. I felt incredibly fortunate to have their muscle and expertise. And, perhaps most significantly for our kitchen project, they efficiently removed the old, tired kitchen countertops. More details on the state of those old counters and the inevitable grime lurking beneath them will be revealed in a future post – because I believe in showing you the authentic, sometimes challenging, reality of owning and renovating an older home!

With the old counters out, even the backyard, where we temporarily stored the debris, started to look a little less cluttered and a lot more like a renovation zone in progress.

The Moment of Truth: Picking Up the Butcher Block
Finally, the moment we had all been waiting for arrived: the phone rang, signaling that our beautiful walnut butcher block had arrived. We immediately headed to Lumber Liquidators for pickup. These blocks are incredibly heavy, a testament to their solid wood construction and durability. My uncle, ever the strongman, initially wanted to prove his “Superman” strength by lifting them into the truck one by one. While I appreciated his enthusiasm, I managed to convince everyone that heavy-duty assistance was a wise choice, saving everyone’s backs and ensuring the precious cargo was handled with care. The quality and heft of the walnut butcher block instantly impressed us, promising both beauty and resilience for our kitchen.

A Nervous Ride and the First Glimpse
The six-minute drive back to the house felt like an eternity, a true nail-biter with our valuable new countertops secured in the truck. Every bump and turn was met with a collective gasp, but we made it home safely! The front yard became the stage for our very first reveal. Unloading the magnificent walnut slabs, we caught our first proper glimpse of their rich color and intricate grain patterns under the open sky. The anticipation had been building, and seeing them finally out of their packaging was incredibly exciting.

Next, it was time for the “dry fit” inside the kitchen. This crucial step involves placing the countertops on the cabinets without any permanent fixings to check their exact positioning, ensure all measurements are correct, and visualize the final layout. Seeing the solid walnut resting in place, even temporarily, was a transformative experience. The natural warmth of the wood instantly elevated the entire space, hinting at the cozy, inviting kitchen it would soon become. And if you’re wondering, yes, I absolutely petted my butcher block. More than a few times, in fact. Its smooth, solid surface was simply irresistible.

Precision Cutting and the Scent of Progress
Up until this point, the weather had been a bit unpredictable, with looming rain clouds threatening to slow our progress. We knew we needed to move quickly with the cutting process to beat the impending wet weather (spoiler alert: it didn’t hold out, but we made significant headway!). Cutting solid butcher block requires precision and careful planning, especially when dealing with custom angles and sink cutouts. I’ll delve deeper into the specific techniques and lessons we learned about making that tricky angled corner cut in a detailed post next week, so stay tuned for those essential tips.
By mid-afternoon, I unfortunately had to leave for class (which, to my surprise, started a week earlier than my course calendar indicated – another unexpected twist!). My uncle, with his impressive woodworking skills, took over the critical task of cutting the corner angle and the remaining pieces for the counters near the stove and refrigerator over the next several hours. It was a massive undertaking, ensuring every cut was perfectly aligned and smoothed for a flawless finish. When I returned home, the house was empty, but filled with the wonderful, unmistakable aroma of sawdust. For any DIY enthusiast or home renovator, that scent isn’t just wood particles; it’s the smell of progress, craftsmanship, and a dream taking shape. It’s, quite frankly, one of the happiest damn smells ever.
Why Choose Butcher Block Countertops for Your Kitchen?
Butcher block countertops offer a unique blend of warmth, natural beauty, and functionality that can transform any kitchen. Made from solid wood strips glued together, they provide a durable and inviting surface. Walnut, in particular, is prized for its rich, dark tones and distinctive grain patterns, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication. Beyond aesthetics, butcher block is a versatile material that can be sanded and re-oiled over time, allowing it to age beautifully and stand up to years of use. It introduces a organic element into modern kitchens and complements traditional designs perfectly. Understanding the proper installation techniques and ongoing care is key to maximizing the lifespan and beauty of these timeless countertops.
