And joining me on this incredible adventure, the one and only, my absolute best blogging friend, Kit:

Kit, a force of nature in her own right, chronicles her captivating escapades over at DIYDiva.net. Much like my own blog, her platform is a vibrant chronicle of the wild, wonderful, and sometimes utterly wacky world of remodeling, mastering power tools, and navigating life as a single individual. Our paths crossed many years ago, coincidentally around the time my ex and I parted ways – a period she, too, was experiencing. From those initial shared moments of vulnerability and understanding, our friendship blossomed. We’ve maintained our bond through a constant stream of texts, late-night Skype sessions, and even epic blog remodeling smackdowns, each challenging the other to new creative heights. It’s a testament to the power of digital connection, fostering genuine camaraderie across vast distances.

Despite this deep, multi-year connection, there remained one profoundly peculiar detail about our friendship: prior to last week, we had never actually met in person. For a relationship spanning mere months or even a year, this might seem entirely normal in our increasingly digital world. However, for a bond forged over several years, through thick and thin, across countless online interactions, it truly highlighted the unique nature of internet friendships. The best explanation? This internet phenomenon is absolutely wild, beautiful, and sometimes, a little surreal. Building such a strong rapport purely through screens truly is a modern marvel, and the anticipation of finally bridging that physical gap was immense.

Over the years, fate seemed to conspire against our in-person meeting. There were several close calls and missed opportunities. Kit was slated to attend a DIY conference in Atlanta called Haven a couple of years back, but circumstances prevented her from making it. Each time, we’d sigh, laugh it off, and vow that “one day” it would happen. That “one day” finally arrived when I realized my family trip to Wisconsin presented the perfect window of opportunity to finally make it happen. After a few short, but undeniably annoying, flights (I’m looking squarely at you, tiny seat 14C, with your lack of legroom and questionable recline), I touched down in Michigan, ready to finally experience life on Black Feather Farm and solidify a friendship that had, until then, existed primarily in the digital realm. The journey itself felt like a pilgrimage, leading me not just to a destination, but to a long-awaited chapter in a cherished friendship.

Stepping onto Black Feather Farm was an assault of wonderful sensory experiences, creating an overwhelming number of photo opportunities around every corner. For a while, I wrestled with how to properly recount all the incredible things I discovered, experienced, and deeply enjoyed during my visit. Should I categorize them? Theme them? Chronologize them? Ultimately, I decided the most authentic way to share this adventure was to simply upload my photos as they populated my phone, allowing them to organically tell the unfolding story of my immersion into farm life. It felt like the truest reflection of how I experienced it – a series of delightful discoveries, each picture a memory, each memory a piece of the larger Black Feather Farm mosaic.

Lunch & Long-Awaited Catch-Up

Kit, ever the gracious host, met me at the Detroit airport, a beacon of familiarity in an unfamiliar land. Our first order of business, even before embarking on the drive out to the farm, was to satisfy our hunger and, more importantly, our need for a proper catch-up. We found a charming spot in Ann Arbor, a vibrant city with a fantastic culinary scene, where we indulged in delicious food and our favorite pastime: storytelling. Years of accumulated anecdotes, shared triumphs, and amusing mishaps spilled out between us. Clearly, some of my tales contained more than a few “WTF” moments, judging by the expression captured when my camera accidentally went off:

That snapshot perfectly encapsulates the joy and genuine surprise of finally sharing these moments in person, unhindered by screens or buffering internet connections. It was a beautiful precursor to the immersive experience awaiting us.

A Warm (and Wary) Farm Welcome

Our drive from Ann Arbor to Black Feather Farm was filled with growing anticipation, each mile bringing us closer to the heart of Kit’s world. Upon our arrival, the welcoming committee wasted no time making their presence known. The “nuggets” – Kit’s affectionate nickname for her delightful flock of chickens – did not disappoint. They immediately scurried towards the car, a flurry of feathers and clucking, as if to confirm I had indeed arrived at precisely the right spot. While their enthusiastic greeting was undeniably charming, I couldn’t help but interpret the look in their beady little eyes as a collective, “…and who the HELL are you???” It was a wonderfully chaotic and authentic farm welcome, setting the tone for the delightful absurdity that often accompanies life with animals.

The Real-Life Home Tour

One of the most surreal aspects of this visit was the highly anticipated house tour. As a fellow blogger, I’d seen countless photos and read detailed posts about Kit’s various home projects over the years. Walking through her house in person felt oddly familiar, a bizarre sense of déjà vu mixed with fresh discovery. It was fascinating to compare the mental floor plan I’d constructed in my head, based on years of blog posts, with the tangible reality as I moved from room to room. Each DIY project I recognized took on a new dimension, allowing me to appreciate the texture of the paint, the true scale of a renovated space, and the subtle nuances that only an in-person viewing can provide. It wasn’t just a house; it was a living gallery of her creative journey, a testament to her dedication and a physical manifestation of her online persona.

Meeting the Resident Donkeys: Doc & Parker

No visit to Black Feather Farm would be complete without an introduction to the farm’s most charming (and surprisingly massive) residents: Doc and Parker, the donkeys. Each tipping the scales at a respectable 250 pounds, these two gentle giants exuded an aura of cool indifference that was immediately captivating. Initially, I approached them with a healthy dose of caution, unsure how these powerful creatures would react to a stranger. However, my apprehension quickly dissolved as they began to interact, braying softly and playfully pestering each other, much like two brothers vying for attention. It was incredibly amusing to watch their antics. And to my absolute delight, I soon discovered that despite their size, Doc and Parker are incredibly affectionate, genuinely seeming to love petting and ear scratches, no matter who they come from. Their soft muzzles and expressive eyes quickly melted my heart, transforming any lingering unease into pure admiration and affection.

A Wild Ride on the Kiterpillar

For those who follow Kit’s blog, you might already be familiar with her beloved, old, but meticulously refurbished golf cart, affectionately (and appropriately) named “The Kiterpillar.” Naturally, Kit, with her flair for the dramatic and a genuine desire to showcase the true essence of rural living, decided it was imperative that we take it for a spin. This wasn’t merely a joyride; it was a proper, full-throttle introduction to the very “FARM part” of #farmlife. Hopping aboard the Kiterpillar felt like stepping into an amusement park ride, but with the added bonus of breathtaking natural scenery and the unmistakable scent of fresh earth.

As we zipped across fields, traversed winding paths, and explored every corner of her expansive property, it didn’t take long to understand precisely why Kit cherishes living here. The Kiterpillar provided a panoramic, exhilarating tour of her domain, revealing some truly amazing views that stretch as far as the eye can see. Rolling hills, lush greenery, and the vast, open sky created a sense of freedom and wonder that’s hard to replicate in urban settings. A pro-tip from the farm host herself: a well-balanced beer helps immensely in maintaining your equilibrium when navigating the uneven terrain of the fields, adding a touch of laid-back charm to the adventure.

Beyond the excitement of the ride and the sheer beauty of the landscape, there was an undeniable, profound tranquility that permeated the entire experience. It wasn’t just pretty; it was incredibly peaceful. The sounds of nature, the gentle rustle of leaves, the distant calls of birds – all contributed to an atmosphere of calm that was deeply rejuvenating. This wasn’t just a physical journey across a farm; it was a mental escape, a powerful reminder of the simple, unadulterated beauty that exists when one disconnects from the constant hum of city life and reconnects with the natural world. It was a perfect blend of adventure and serene contemplation, leaving an indelible mark on my soul.

The First Evening: Friendship, Planning, and a Project Unveiled

As the sun began to dip below the horizon on that first unforgettable night, casting long, golden shadows across the farm, the day truly culminated in the most authentic way possible: two friends simply catching up. With cold beers in hand, we settled in, swapping stories, discussing our blogging journeys, sharing life updates, and reveling in the joy of finally being together in the same physical space. What made the experience even more delightful was our utter lack of a rigid itinerary for the days ahead. We literally “winged it”—pun absolutely intended, given our earlier farm explorations! This spontaneity allowed for a fluid, relaxed atmosphere, where ideas could organically bloom.

And indeed, an idea did bloom. Amidst our relaxed conversations and laughter, a new project began to take shape in our minds, one that was so compelling it immediately demanded its own dedicated post. While I won’t spill all the beans just yet, here’s a sneak peek, a compelling summary of what the next few days miraculously wound up looking like. It’s a testament to the power of creative minds converging, even after years of digital interaction, to make something tangible and exciting happen.
