Charlie’s Countryside Fall Frolics

The past weekend was a delightful blend of cool temperatures, crisp autumn air, and moments of serene reflection. For my beloved city pup, Charlie, it was also an incredibly *exhausting* adventure. This was her very first encounter with farm life – specifically, seeing cows up close and personal, and experiencing the sheer joy of patrolling a vast, fenced-in property. It was a world away from her usual urban strolls, offering boundless sights, sounds, and smells to explore.

To put it simply: she absolutely adored it. In fact, as I type this, she’s still catching up on her beauty sleep, dreaming of open fields and strange, mooing creatures. Her little paws are undoubtedly tired from all the exploration, a testament to a weekend well spent in nature’s embrace.

Introducing K: My Partner in DIY and Adventure

While I haven’t talked much about “the bearded guy” on the blog before, I’ve been happily dating K for nearly a year now. He’s a wonderful mix of funny, nerdy, and boasts a charming southern twang that I’ve come to adore. To avoid the awkwardness of constantly referring to him as “the bearded guy,” I’ll simply call him K from now on. One of my favorite quirks about him is how he pronounces Charlie’s name – “CHAH-lee,” without the ‘r’, which always brings a smile to my face.

K is also the proud owner of Stella, the adorable munchkin dog you might have spotted in my social media feeds. Stella, with her playful energy and love for digging, certainly balances out K’s helpfulness around the house, especially with upcoming projects like the pub shed. While K promises to be a big asset to our DIY endeavors, Stella’s preferred contribution usually involves excavating my garden beds in pursuit of chipmunks. Regardless, our little canine companions add immeasurable joy and occasional chaos to our lives.

A Trip to Americus, Georgia: Family, Farming, and Future Projects

This past weekend, K and I journeyed to his hometown of Americus, Georgia, to visit his parents. These trips often serve multiple purposes, and this one was no exception. Our primary mission involved helping his parents move some furniture, as they’re in the process of building a new home in Tennessee and needed assistance packing up a U-Haul. We also spent time rehoming some of K’s childhood treasures – including a fascinating collection of John Deere farm toys that brought back a flood of nostalgic memories.

Beyond the practical tasks, the trip offered a wonderful opportunity to deepen my connection with K’s family. (Spoiler alert: they are incredibly charming and welcoming!). Another significant aspect of the visit involved acquiring some freshly cut timber. His parents had recently taken down a few trees, and I was eager to salvage some of the wood for various DIY projects, as well as for our indoor fireplace and outdoor fire pit. The cedar logs, in particular, promise to infuse our home with a wonderfully aromatic scent throughout the colder months, making our living spaces even cozier.

Charlie, as mentioned, truly thrived during our countryside escape. Over the past year, K and I have dedicated considerable effort to training her to walk reliably both on and off a leash, preventing her from bolting down the road the moment she’s unleashed. This trip proved our training efforts are paying off beautifully. My clever girl happily explored the entire property by our side, responded (mostly!) when called, and spent a good portion of the evening captivated by the sight of the strange, mooing creatures she’d never encountered before. She ran, sniffed every intriguing scent, and reveled in the freedom of the expansive property so much that she was already hinting at wanting an early nap before dinnertime. Our playful excuse for her early retreat? “She’s an indoor type of dog, you know.”

Considering her profound fascination with the local bovines, I think it’s safe to say Charlie’s Christmas wish list will definitely include a dairy cow stuffed animal. It would be the perfect memento of her unforgettable first farm visit.

Unearthing a Vintage Gem: The Spartan Manor Camper Restoration

With Halloween just around the corner, I have something truly “scary” to share with you! Prepare yourselves for a glimpse into the past – and a potential future project that’s equal parts thrilling and terrifying.

A scary, old, dilapidated camper sitting in a field, hinting at a challenging restoration project.

This is K’s late grandfather’s old camper. For decades, it has sat motionless in this spot, serving as an impromptu workshop and storage unit. We checked the license plate, which dates back to 1987 – the very year my sister was born! Its wheels are long flat, its exterior is a symphony of rust and grime, and it possesses an undeniably spooky aura. It’s certainly a sight that makes you wonder what stories it holds within its weathered walls.

However, despite its current state of disrepair, K believes this vintage camper, which he estimates to be from the 1940s or 50s, holds significant value even in its current condition. He’s determined to restore it, not, as most of our friends have jokingly suggested, to burn it! This decision marks the beginning of an exciting, albeit challenging, journey to breathe new life into a piece of family history. The thought of transforming this relic into a functional, beautiful space is truly inspiring.

A sneak peek inside the old Spartan camper, revealing its current rustic and untouched interior.

When K talks about restoration, he means “restore-ish.” His vision extends beyond mere cosmetic repairs; he aims to outfit it with cutting-edge renewable technology and smart features, essentially transforming a vintage shell into a modern, off-grid capable mobile living space. Having seen incredible camper makeovers before – like this stunning example and this inspiring project – I don’t think his ambitions are entirely outlandish. The potential to blend vintage charm with contemporary innovation is truly captivating.

However, I must admit, looking at its current state, it does conjure images of Jason Voorhees and Cousin Eddie being rather nightmarish roommates. The jokes among our friends have been endless! So, while I’m not officially agreeing to take on this massive undertaking *yet*, if you know of any fantastic Instagram accounts or camper restoration blogs that you absolutely love, please send them my way. I’m eager to gather inspiration and learn from others who have embarked on similar adventures. And yes, I may just convince K to wear a bathrobe and trooper hat to the costume party this weekend, just for fun and thematic consistency.

This vintage camper project, fondly dubbed “Ruby’s Revival,” is truly a labor of love that promises to transform a forgotten relic into a functional and stylish home on wheels. The journey involves countless hours of cleaning, repairing, and innovating, from addressing decades of rust and decay to integrating solar panels and smart home systems. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of vintage travel and the power of imagination. If you’re intrigued by the process, you can check out the video series documenting its transformation.

Charlie’s Ancestry Revealed: The DNA Test Journey

On another exciting note, I’ve finally caved! For a while now, I’ve held onto a dog DNA test kit, a thoughtful gift from my sister. Honestly, I wasn’t overly concerned about Charlie’s specific breed. She’s a wonderfully happy, lovable mutt, and since she was a puppy, I’ve always enjoyed the mystery, letting people guess her lineage without spoiling the fun. The enigma of her mixed heritage felt like a charming part of her identity.

However, K, ever the enthusiast for uncovering answers, brought the kit downstairs the other night and finally convinced me. “Just for fun,” he said, “let’s answer the question once and for all.” And so, Charlie has been swabbed! The kit is being sent off this week, and in a few weeks’ time, when the results return, I’ll finally be able to share the fascinating details of her ancestry with you all. Beyond just satisfying curiosity, knowing her breed mix could offer insights into potential health predispositions, behavioral traits, and even specific nutritional needs, allowing us to care for her even better. Stay tuned for the big reveal!
