Hey there! As the festive glow of the holiday season gently fades, I’m slowly but surely emerging from the delightful post-Christmas haze, replete with a healthy dose of naps that were absolutely essential for maintaining my sanity. This year’s Christmas was a beautiful whirlwind of family, joy, and perhaps a touch of delightful chaos. My beloved furry companion, Charlie, certainly soaked in every moment, though not before she had thoroughly exhausted her playful cousins, ingeniously “borrowed” all their favorite squeaky toys, managed to snag a few delicious morsels of ham from the holiday table, and showered every family member with an overwhelming demand for hugs and kisses. Only after every gift was unwrapped and the last bit of excitement had settled did she finally succumb to a deep, well-deserved slumber.

In our family, a heartwarming tradition has long been established: our cherished canine companions are treated as integral members, often lovingly referred to as “fur-babies.” For many single individuals without children, pets fill a unique and profound space in their lives, becoming true extensions of the family unit. This sentiment resonates deeply within my family, where Charlie, along with my sister’s two adorable dogs, Lemon and Lana, receive the full VIP treatment. They’re showered with thoughtful gifts from my parents, engage in playful “gift exchanges” amongst themselves, and are affectionately recognized with titles like “cousins” or having an “Aunt Sarah” or “Aunt Emily.” While I’m aware that some people might raise an eyebrow at treating dogs with such human-like reverence, it has always been the cherished norm in our household. For us, it’s a natural expression of love and the strong bonds we share with our pets, so I wholeheartedly embrace it without reservation. My sister, in particular, takes this practice to another level, often indulging her creative whims by dressing up Lemon and Lana in various adorable costumes. These sartorial adventures, often fueled by a generous supply of treats, always bring a chuckle to family gatherings, and honestly, if I were in their Santa hats, I probably wouldn’t complain either!

Beyond the delightful chaos of family and furry friends, the holiday season also offered opportunities for cherished moments with friends. We embraced classic Christmas activities, like the delightful task of baking gingerbread cookies. The aroma filling the air was pure holiday magic. However, the most amusing and unexpected aspect of this particular holiday season was undoubtedly the weather. Imagine a balmy 78 degrees Fahrenheit in late December! It felt less like a winter wonderland and more like a late spring day. The thought of grilling outdoors for Christmas dinner was certainly a novel experience, a stark contrast to the traditional cozy fireside gatherings often associated with the festive season. This unseasonably warm spell added an unusually tropical twist to our holiday celebrations, making for some truly memorable moments.

The warm weather during our gingerbread baking session meant we could keep the doors and windows wide open, letting a refreshing breeze circulate through the house. Despite the warmth, the rain was relentless, making outdoor activities largely impractical, save for taking advantage of some fantastic rainy day specials on beer, which provided a different kind of festive cheer. A humorous side effect of the strange weather and holiday spirit was observing cars driving around the city, many sporting festive antlers, but curiously missing one. It seemed many drivers had forgotten about their temporary vehicular adornments and rolled down their windows, inadvertently sending an antler on an unexpected solo adventure. It was a small, amusing detail that perfectly encapsulated the quirky charm of this year’s unconventional Christmas.

Overall, our Christmas was wonderfully mellow and filled with genuine warmth. While it’s always tinged with a bittersweet sentiment since Granny’s passing – her absence is deeply felt during these special times – we all found solace and joy in upholding our treasured family traditions. Each moment, from sharing stories to indulging in delicious food, became a tribute to her memory. Moreover, everyone was delighted with the thoughtful and meaningful gifts received, making for a truly memorable celebration that honored the past while embracing the present.

This year’s gift haul took a slightly different turn than usual. While I didn’t receive a collection of new tools to eagerly hug like ponies, as has often been my delightful tradition, I was absolutely thrilled with the unique and thoughtful presents I did receive. One standout was an awesomely nerdy Doctor Who ornament, which will undoubtedly take pride of place on our Christmas tree next year. It’s the perfect blend of my love for the holidays and my passion for pop culture, a truly personalized touch to our festive decorations.

Another fantastic gift was a set of outdoor LED string lights, designed with charming Edison-style bulbs. I’ve been longing to illuminate my backyard with ambient, energy-efficient lighting for ages, transforming the space into a cozy outdoor haven. These lights mean that next year will undoubtedly bring a host of exciting outdoor projects, giving me the perfect excuse to string them up and create the inviting atmosphere I’ve envisioned. From defining entertaining spaces to simply enjoying tranquil evenings under soft illumination, these lights are sure to spark a wave of creativity and outdoor enhancements. It’s truly exciting to think about the potential for transforming my outdoor living areas!

Perhaps the most practical and exciting gift for my ongoing blogging and home improvement endeavors was a superb lighting kit. This professional-grade equipment will be invaluable for capturing high-quality interior photographs, especially in challenging spaces like my kitchen and laundry room where natural light can be notoriously difficult to work with. Achieving optimal lighting is crucial for showcasing DIY projects and room transformations, ensuring every detail is crisp and vibrant. This kit will undoubtedly elevate the visual appeal of my content, making it easier to share my progress and inspiration with you all. Speaking of my kitchen…

I’ve already started taking a few preliminary photos as the Christmas décor gradually comes down, even though I’m still in the process of mastering the new lighting kit. The difference the recent DIY Roman shade I crafted for the kitchen window has made is astounding! It adds such a polished and complete look to the space, truly transforming the window from a functional opening to a focal point of design. This small but impactful project underscores the power of DIY to personalize and enhance a home’s aesthetic. You can find more updated photos and details on my dedicated Kitchen House Tour page, where you’ll see how this and other touches are shaping the space. In fact, the entire House Tour section of my blog is scheduled for a comprehensive refresh with LOTS of new updates coming in the next month, so stay tuned for a full reveal of ongoing transformations!

Beyond the festive clear-out and photography ventures, a flurry of other cleanup and renovation projects are underway. The removal of Christmas décor is paving the way for the next significant interior design enhancement: the installation of new window casing in the living room. This detail might seem minor, but trim work plays a crucial role in lending a finished, architectural elegance to any space, and I’m eager to see the transformation it will bring to my living room in the coming weeks. I’m excited to share a comprehensive recap of this year’s successes and an exciting preview of the projects slated for the upcoming year. Expect several new blog posts, including deep dives into:
