There’s something undeniably enchanting about glitter and confetti, especially during the festive holiday season. This project taps into that joyful, celebratory energy, allowing you to infuse your everyday items with a vibrant, shimmering flair. Far from being just a childhood fascination, glitter, when used creatively, can elevate even the most rustic materials like concrete into sophisticated, eye-catching décor. For this DIY adventure, I couldn’t resist indulging my love for all things sparkly, resulting in three distinct and equally captivating sets of concrete coasters. Each set offers a unique aesthetic, demonstrating the versatility of this simple yet impactful craft.
Sparkling Concrete Coasters: Three Dazzling Styles for Your Home
Choosing your glitter and confetti can be as fun as the crafting itself! I explored different looks to showcase the range of possibilities with these DIY concrete coasters. Here are the three variations I created, each with its own charm and appeal:

1. Silver Glitter Coasters: Subtle Elegance
The silver glitter coasters offer a refined and sophisticated look. The fine silver particles blend seamlessly into the white concrete, creating a subtle shimmer that catches the light beautifully. This style is perfect for those who appreciate understated glamour and want to add a touch of sparkle without overpowering their existing décor. It’s versatile enough for both festive occasions and everyday use, bringing a quiet sparkle to your coffee table or bar cart. The silver tone is timeless and pairs well with a variety of color palettes.

2. Gold Confetti Coasters: Bold & Festive
For a truly celebratory feel, the gold confetti coasters are an excellent choice. Featuring chunky gold glitter and larger confetti pieces, this design is bold, vibrant, and undeniably festive. The larger elements create striking visual interest, making these coasters pop. They are ideal for New Year’s Eve parties, Christmas gatherings, or any event where you want to make a statement. The rich gold hue adds warmth and luxury, instantly transforming your tabletop into a party-ready display.

3. Mixed Glitter & Confetti Coasters: A Unique Blend
Why choose when you can have both? This combination set merges the best of both worlds, incorporating both fine glitter and larger confetti pieces. The result is a dynamic and intricate design that offers depth and varied textures. While this particular combination might not be my personal favorite, it often appeals to others who enjoy a more eclectic and playful aesthetic. It demonstrates how mixing materials can lead to truly unique and unexpected outcomes, proving that sometimes, experimenting with different elements yields the most interesting results.

Essential Materials and Tools for Your Concrete Coaster Project
Before you begin this fun and rewarding DIY project, it’s crucial to gather all your materials and tools. While making these glitter concrete coasters is relatively straightforward, working with concrete dust requires a few important safety precautions. Concrete dust is very fine and can easily become airborne, posing risks to your eyes, nose, and lungs. Therefore, prioritize your safety by ensuring you have the appropriate protective gear on hand. Always wear gloves to protect your skin from irritants, a breathing mask to prevent inhalation of fine particles, and safety glasses or goggles to shield your eyes. If you have any sensitivities or respiratory conditions, these precautions are even more critical. A well-ventilated workspace is also highly recommended to minimize dust exposure.
Materials & Tools List
- Orbital Sander (helpful for vibrating molds and sanding)
- Sandpaper (80-grit recommended for smoothing rough edges)
- Safety Gear (glasses, hearing protection, breathing mask, gloves)
- Silicone Mold (coaster-sized, typically square or round)
- White Cement (provides a clean base for glitter to shine)
- Glitter or Confetti (your choice of colors, sizes, and mixes)
- Popsicle Sticks (for mixing concrete)
- Small Disposable Cups (for mixing concrete in small batches)
- Toothpicks and Small Brush (for glitter placement and detail work)
- Felt Sheets (for coaster backing, optional but recommended)
- Strong Adhesive (for attaching felt)
Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Own Glitter Concrete Coasters
Time needed: 1 day (including curing time)
These confetti, glitter, and white concrete coasters make a perfect hostess gift or New Year’s Eve decoration! Follow these detailed steps to create your own:
-
Prepare Your Molds with Glitter or Confetti
Begin by deciding on the design for each coaster. For a dynamic, “swoopy” or crescent shape, carefully pour your chosen glitter or confetti to one side of each silicone coaster mold. Use a toothpick or small paintbrush to gently spread and arrange the glitter to achieve your desired pattern. I experimented with varying amounts of glitter in different molds to see how it would affect the final look, which is a great way to discover new effects. A key learning point: if using confetti, avoid piling it too thickly near the edges, as this can cause pieces to fall away when de-molding. Fine glitter tends to be more forgiving in this regard. Take your time during this step, as the placement of your sparkle will significantly influence the finished aesthetic of your unique concrete coasters.
-
Mix Your White Concrete to Perfection
Achieving the right concrete consistency is crucial for smooth, durable coasters. In a disposable cup, add a small amount of water, then gradually stir in the white cement using a popsicle stick. The goal is a mixture resembling thick pancake batter—smooth, pourable, but not watery. This consistency ensures the concrete flows well into the mold while minimizing air bubbles. Be extremely cautious when adding water; it’s deceptively easy to add too much, turning your mix soupy very quickly. Start with a little water and add tiny increments if the mixture is too dry. Mix thoroughly to eliminate any lumps, ensuring an even consistency throughout your batch of concrete.
-
Eliminate Air Bubbles for a Flawless Finish
Air bubbles are the enemy of a smooth concrete surface. After pouring the concrete mixture into your glitter-prepared molds, it’s essential to remove as many as possible. For my first batch of 12 coasters, I manually tapped the molds on my tabletop for several minutes, allowing trapped air to rise to the surface. For the second batch, I experimented by running an orbital sander (without sandpaper) on the side of the table near the molds. The vibrations from the sander proved more effective at bringing bubbles to the surface, resulting in a slightly denser and smoother finish. While the orbital sander method was powerful, for future projects, I might opt for hand tapping again, as it allows for more control and less chance of over-vibration, which could potentially impact glitter settling.
-
Carefully De-mold After Curing Overnight
Patience is key during the curing process. Allow your concrete coasters to dry and harden completely, ideally overnight or for at least 12-24 hours, depending on ambient humidity and concrete instructions. De-molding is arguably the most exciting part of this DIY! The reveal is always a surprise, as you discover how the glitter and confetti have settled and integrated into the concrete. I was particularly fascinated by how larger confetti pieces often remained closer to the surface, creating bold accents, while finer glass glitter seemed to blend deeper, mimicking the subtle sparkle found in quartz countertops. Each coaster will be a unique work of art, reflecting your creative choices and the unpredictable beauty of the materials.

-
Fill in Any Minor Imperfections
Even with careful bubble removal, you might find a few small air pockets or imperfections on the surface of your de-molded coasters. Don’t worry—these are easy to fix! Mix a very small batch of concrete to a slightly thicker consistency than before. Use a toothpick or a fine brush to carefully dab this mixture into any holes or rough spots. While striving for perfection is an option, remember that handmade items often derive their charm from slight irregularities. I was more interested in exploring different glitter and confetti combinations, so I embraced a few minor imperfections as part of their unique character. With a single mold producing six coasters, I made four gold confetti, four silver glitter, and four combination coasters, allowing for diverse styles.
-
Smooth the Bottom Edges by Sanding
Once your coasters are fully cured and any touch-ups have dried, inspect the bottom edges. It’s common for concrete pieces to have slight ridges or sharp points from the molding process. These need to be smoothed down to prevent scratching your tabletops. Using 80-grit sandpaper, gently sand the bottom edges and any rough areas until they are smooth to the touch. This step not only ensures your furniture remains protected but also gives your coasters a more professional, finished look. Always remember to wear your breathing mask during sanding to avoid inhaling concrete dust.
-
Apply Felt Backing for Added Protection
To provide ultimate protection for your surfaces and give your coasters a polished finish, adding a felt backing is a fantastic idea. I had some self-adhesive felt sheets from a previous project that were perfect for this. These sheets typically have a soft felt surface on one side and a strong adhesive on the other, making application simple. If you don’t have self-adhesive felt, you can cut regular felt to size and attach it with a strong craft adhesive. Simply trace the shape of your coaster onto the felt, cut it out, and carefully apply it to the bottom. This small detail significantly enhances the functionality and perceived quality of your handmade glitter concrete coasters.

Sealing Your Concrete Coasters for Durability
The question of whether to seal your concrete coasters is an important one that depends on the type of concrete you’ve used. In my case, the specific white cement I purchased was formulated for outdoor use and its instructions indicated that a separate sealing process was not necessary. However, if you are using standard indoor concrete mixes or if your specific product doesn’t explicitly state it’s self-sealing, applying a sealant is highly recommended. A good concrete sealant will protect your coasters from moisture, stains (especially from drinks), and general wear and tear, significantly extending their lifespan and maintaining their pristine appearance. Look for food-safe or non-toxic sealants if they will be used in contact with food or beverages. Common sealant types include acrylic, epoxy, or penetrating sealers, each offering different levels of protection and finish. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application and curing for best results.
Creative Uses and Gifting Ideas for Your DIY Coasters
Once your DIY glitter concrete coasters are complete, the possibilities for their use are endless! Their festive sparkle makes them absolutely perfect for holiday entertaining. Imagine them gracing your bar cart or coffee table at a sophisticated New Year’s Eve party, reflecting the ambient lights and champagne bubbles. They also make truly thoughtful and personalized hostess gifts for any holiday party or gathering you attend. Wrap a set with a beautiful ribbon, perhaps adding a small tag indicating they are handmade, and you have a gift that is both practical and memorable. Beyond the holidays, these versatile coasters can add a touch of glamour to everyday décor, serving as a chic resting place for your morning coffee or evening cocktail. Consider making custom sets for weddings, anniversaries, or housewarmings, tailoring the glitter and confetti colors to match the recipient’s style. They’re a fantastic way to showcase your crafting skills and spread a little joy!
