Bring Your Deck to Life: Colorful Blooms and Chic Planters

Transform Your Outdoor Oasis: Elevating Your Deck with Vibrant Flowers and Stylish Planters

This week marked a delightful transformation for our outdoor living space. Our deck gained a vibrant burst of color and renewed energy thanks to an exciting array of new flowering plants and beautifully designed planters. It’s truly remarkable how a few carefully chosen elements can dramatically shift the entire ambiance of a deck, turning it into a more inviting and visually stunning extension of your home.

Beyond the immediate floral refresh, this period also coincided with a significant step forward in a much-anticipated project: the construction of our new outdoor sectional. For those who have followed our journey since last summer’s monumental floating deck build, you’ll know that this particular piece of furniture has been a long-awaited endeavor. It’s envisioned as a true centerpiece for our evolving outdoor vision, and the excitement to finally bring this concept to life has been palpable.

However, as is often the case with ambitious DIY projects, our path took an unexpected, yet ultimately beneficial, turn. We completely reimagined the design of the sectional, diverging significantly from our initial shared plans! Just before my departure for the SpringMake conference, my partner K and I found ourselves contemplating a few subtle curves for the sectional. This seemingly minor tweak, in a delightful domino effect, snowballed into an entirely fresh perspective for the entire seating area. This iterative design process is a testament to the dynamic nature of creative projects, where flexibility and openness to change often lead to the most inspired and satisfying outcomes. Here’s a sneak peek at the evolving concept that has us so energized:

That moment of revelation, an internal “YES, THAT’S IT!” echoed simultaneously for both of us. After months of thoughtful consideration and occasional design procrastination, we were suddenly filled with renewed enthusiasm and a crystal-clear direction. It’s remarkable how a single design adjustment can crystallize an entire vision, allowing you to mentally place every planter, umbrella, and decorative accent with perfect clarity. This breakthrough transformed our approach, making the next steps feel not just manageable, but truly inspiring and cohesive.

You might be wondering why I’m delving into the intricacies of our sectional design when this particular post is dedicated to a different aspect of our deck’s enhancement. The reason is simple: I had initially envisioned unveiling the completed sectional alongside a dramatic burst of color from new flowers and planters scattered throughout the space. My planning involved acquiring all these vibrant additions, anticipating that at least a few sectional chairs would be ready for styling and photography by the time the plants were prepped. Then, of course, the design changed! It’s a classic DIY scenario where aspirations sometimes outpace practical timelines, leading to a delightful, if slightly delayed, re-evaluation. While my initial timeline may have been ambitious, the silver lining is that this design evolution has provided absolute clarity on where each beautiful planter and every colorful bloom will now perfectly complement our transformed deck, making the wait even more exciting.

Cultivating Color: Expert Tips for Enhancing Your Deck with Plants and Planters

To bring this vision of a more colorful deck to life, I had the incredible opportunity to partner with Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. This collaboration was genuinely a dream come true, and frankly, my family thinks I’m pretty cool right now for working with such an iconic brand! They provided a generous budget of around $100 for all the plants and planters, including the essential potting soil. While I aimed diligently to stay within this target, anyone who knows the irresistible allure of a well-stocked garden center will understand the delightful challenge. Let’s just say I stayed exceptionally close to that target, a testament to the wide array of beautiful options available!

This particular shopping trip underscored a personal truth: unleash me in the garden section, and my desire to acquire *all* the beautiful things becomes undeniable. The video below even shows some other gorgeous hanging planters I was sorely tempted by, highlighting the vast selection. The experience was made even more enjoyable and creatively successful by bringing K along. His taste in flowers diverges quite dramatically from mine, which proved to be an unexpected advantage. He was the one who gravitated towards the striking orange lilies and cheerful yellow daisies you see, whereas I tend to be drawn to the delicate beauty of smaller, clustered blooms. This collaborative selection process resulted in a far more dynamic and visually interesting combination than I might have achieved alone, demonstrating the power of diverse perspectives in garden design.

We captured the entire shopping trip on video, which was a valuable learning experience for both of us, navigating the unique challenges of filming in a busy retail environment versus the controlled comfort of home. The video not only provides a visual tour of our selections but also includes a fantastic, practical tip on how to keep your newly purchased blooms fresh and vibrant, ensuring they thrive after transplanting. It was a fun opportunity to interact creatively with the store displays and gather inspiration for our deck project.

Strategic Plant and Planter Selection for Stunning Container Gardens

After carefully selecting our planters, the next exciting step was choosing the perfect plants to fill each one. Here’s a valuable budgeting tip I learned from experience: if you’re aiming to stick to a specific budget, consider selecting your plants first. This allows you to then find planters that perfectly accommodate your chosen flora, rather than committing to planters and then trying to fill them. My personal approach was the reverse – I fell in love with nearly every stylish planter from the Better Homes & Gardens line at Walmart. This meant I was then focused on finding enough diverse and beautiful plants to fill *every desired planter* rather than strategically choosing planters for *specific plants*. While it meant a little more creative budgeting and selection on the fly, the outcome was incredibly rewarding, allowing us to incorporate a wide variety of chic containers into our deck aesthetic.

For successful and visually appealing container gardening, I always aim for a balanced mix of vibrant color and lush greenery, combined with varied textures and forms. When assembling larger planters, a popular and highly effective technique is the “thriller, filler, spiller” method. The “thriller” is a tall, dramatic plant that provides vertical interest and acts as a focal point, much like the striking lilies we chose. The “filler” consists of medium-height plants that add volume, mass, and continuous color, effectively filling out the middle of the container. Finally, the “spiller” is a plant that cascades gracefully over the edge of the pot, softening the hard lines of the container and adding a touch of elegance and movement, such as an ornamental grass. This thoughtful combination creates a dynamic, multi-layered arrangement that looks captivating from every angle. Here’s a detailed look at the specific planters and plants that made it into our outdoor refresh:

Our Chosen Planters: Where Style Meets Functionality for Deck Design

  • 2 – 12″ Teal Brookmonte planters: These planters, with their beautiful teal hue and classic design, offer a sophisticated pop of color that complements both lush greens and bright blooms. Their generous size makes them ideal for creating impactful, substantial arrangements, perfect for anchoring a seating area.
  • 1 – 11″ Kennewick planter with stand: The elevated design of this planter adds a different dimension to the display, allowing smaller plants to be brought up to eye level. This enhances visibility, creates varied heights, and adds architectural interest to the overall deck composition, drawing the eye upwards.
  • 1 – 20″ Diamond Blue planter: This larger planter, with its unique diamond pattern and subtle blue-gray tone, provides a substantial base for a more elaborate and layered arrangement. Its size makes it a natural focal point, capable of holding multiple plants for a truly lush display.

Our Selected Plants: A Symphony of Color and Texture for Container Gardens

  • 2 – ‘Shocking Blue’ Confetti Garden (mix of Calibrachoa, Petunia, and Verbena): This pre-mixed collection is a gardener’s dream for ease and impact, offering a stunning blend of complementary colors and growth habits in a single pot. The Calibrachoa provides delicate, trumpet-shaped blooms with a trailing habit, Petunias add lush, often larger flowers and fill space beautifully, and Verbena contributes clusters of small flowers, often with a mounding or semi-trailing habit. Together, they create a continuous, vibrant display that functions wonderfully as both a filler and a spiller, offering an abundance of blooms without the fuss of individual plant selection.
  • 1 – Yellow Gerbera Daisy: A classic choice for instantly cheerful color, the Gerbera Daisy brings large, ray-like petals that brighten any arrangement. Its bold yellow is a fantastic contrast to blues and purples, making it an excellent candidate for a strong focal point or a joyful filler that catches the eye.
  • 1 – Sedum: Known for its remarkable drought tolerance and succulent-like foliage, Sedum offers invaluable textural interest and a range of colors, from vibrant green to reddish-purple. It’s an excellent choice for a filler, providing structure, visual weight, and often small, star-shaped flowers that are attractive to pollinators. Its resilience makes it a low-maintenance addition.
  • 1 – Impatiens: Perfect for adding continuous color to shadier spots on the deck, Impatiens provide an abundance of delicate, vibrant blooms from spring through fall. They are exceptional fillers, quickly creating a lush mound of color wherever they are placed, ideal for brightening up less sunny corners.
  • 1 – Asiatic Lily: These dramatic, upright flowers serve as perfect “thrillers” in a container. Their large, often brightly colored blooms (our choice being a striking orange) create immediate vertical interest and a powerful visual impact, drawing the eye upward and adding a touch of elegance and grandeur to the arrangement.
  • 1 – Blue Fescue: An ornamental grass, Blue Fescue is a fantastic “spiller” and provides unique texture with its fine, arching blades. Its cool, silvery-blue color offers a beautiful contrast to the vibrant flowers, creating a soft, flowing effect over the edge of the planter. It pairs wonderfully with broader-leaved plants and bright blooms, adding an element of sophisticated naturalism.

Of all the selections, the ‘Shocking Blue’ Confetti Garden mix remains a personal favorite. The brilliance of this choice lies in its simplicity and high impact: a single, pre-selected mix was all it took to generously fill an entire 12-inch pot. This not only saved considerable time and eliminated the guesswork of coordinating individual plants for color and growth habit, but also guaranteed a cohesive and spectacular display. These will undoubtedly look fantastic flanking either side of our new sectional once it’s complete, offering a symmetrical burst of vibrant color that ties the whole outdoor space together into a harmonious design.

Even Charlie, our beloved canine companion, seems to approve of the exciting direction we’re taking with our outdoor space! There’s nothing quite like a happy pup to validate your design choices and remind you of the joy a beautiful home brings. (And honestly, I’ll take any opportunity to share photos of his smiling face.)

And so, here we are. While the outdoor garden benches I crafted last year continue to serve as a wonderful, temporary spot for enjoying my morning coffee amidst these burgeoning blooms, each new plant and planter brings me one significant step closer to realizing that cherished dream: sitting out on our gorgeously decorated deck, surrounded by beauty and comfort, and watching our pups play. It’s a journey of continuous improvement, where every small addition contributes to a larger, more harmonious, and deeply personal vision for our home.

This project reminds us that creating an inviting and functional outdoor living area is an ongoing process, full of discovery, creativity, and sometimes, delightful changes of plans. By thoughtfully selecting plants and planters, even when adhering to a budget, you can transform any deck or patio into a personal oasis that reflects your style and provides a tranquil escape. We hope this inspires you to look at your own outdoor spaces with fresh eyes and consider how a splash of color and some strategic greenery can make all the difference in crafting your perfect outdoor retreat.
