Its primary downfall is a complete lack of dedicated function or aesthetic appeal, which inevitably transforms it into an unintentional “dumping ground.” Coats are perpetually tossed onto the bench, the nearby closet remains largely ignored, and anything carried in from the car seems to land here by default. I admit, it’s a habit born of sheer laziness, but it’s a common trap many homeowners fall into. The current setup neither looks good nor serves any practical purpose, contributing to daily frustration and a less-than-ideal first impression.

My backyard has seen its fair share of love and labor over the years. We’ve removed troublesome trees, carefully relocated plants, and constructed beautiful garden beds, all contributing to a gradual makeover. However, I am beyond thrilled to finally announce what will undoubtedly be one of my biggest, most ambitious projects to date: a complete leveling and re-imagining of the entire backyard. The Grand Vision: Leveling, Storage, and Entertaining Zones

My primary goal is to tackle the significant topographical challenges in the yard. This involves renting some truly impressive heavy machinery—a giant toy, as I affectionately call it (eep!)—to strategically move the substantial dirt mound currently dominating the left side of the yard. This earth will be relocated to fill in the depressed area along the back, which many of you might remember me discussing as our persistent “sinkhole problem”. This initial earth-moving phase is crucial for establishing a level foundation across a much larger section of the yard. After redistributing the existing soil, I anticipate needing to bring in additional fill dirt to achieve a perfectly even grade, essential for the subsequent stages of the transformation.

Once the ground is finally level and ready, the next exciting additions will take shape. First, I plan to install a much-needed shed. With our garage being quite modest in size, dedicated external storage for all our garden tools, outdoor equipment, and miscellaneous supplies will be an absolute game-changer, helping to keep both the garage and the main yard tidy. Following the shed, the leveled expanse will become home to a spacious new entertaining area. This will be my ultimate outdoor living zone, perfect for hosting gatherings, relaxing with family, and enjoying the beautiful weather. The existing tiny cement patio, which I’ve previously worked on, won’t be forgotten either. It will receive some fresh updates and be repurposed as a separate, more intimate space, ideally serving as the perfect spot for our grill.
