Kicking Off the Year Right

The dawn of a new year often brings with it a surge of inspiration, a renewed sense of purpose, and an undeniable urge to set ambitious goals. For me, January has always been a powerful catalyst, and this year, my to-do list has taken center stage in my mind like never before. Just a few weeks ago, I openly shared my aspirations for 2015 – a comprehensive list of personal, home, and blogging objectives that I envisioned shaping my year. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind of focused energy and determination. Each passing week has felt progressively more productive, and I’m genuinely surprised and incredibly thrilled to report that my DIY spirit, which sometimes wanes, feels fully rekindled and more vibrant than ever.

As we transition into a fresh month, I find immense value in pausing to reflect on these initial goals. This monthly check-in serves several crucial purposes: it helps maintain the fantastic momentum I’ve built, allows me to celebrate the achievements I’ve made so far, and critically, provides an opportunity to reassess and set new targets if necessary – and yes, there’s at least one significant goal I initially overlooked that definitely needs to be added. I fully anticipate that priorities will naturally shift, leading to evolving goals throughout the year. However, by consistently recapping my progress each month, I not only foster a profound sense of accomplishment – acknowledging that I genuinely *am* making tangible progress, despite moments of self-doubt – but also sharpen my focus on the tasks that still lie ahead. This structured reflection is proving to be an indispensable tool in navigating the complexities of home, work, and personal growth.

Personal Goals: Cultivating Balance and Decluttering for Clarity

My personal aspirations for this year centered on three key areas: effectively separating work from home life (a particular challenge when your office is also your home), establishing robust clutter control, and consciously making an effort to get out of the house more frequently. The current status? I’m hitting these goals with undeniable momentum, almost what you might call HAM.

This past month has been exceptionally productive, and I attribute much of this success to finally severing the pervasive “work-from-anywhere” habit. While the flexibility of working from any room in the house initially seemed like a fantastic perk, it took me nearly nine months to realize that this freedom didn’t necessarily translate into increased productivity. In fact, it often led to blurred lines between work and leisure, making it harder to switch off. The pivotal change was relocating my laptop to my dedicated office space permanently. This single decision immediately brought the focus and structure I desperately needed. Furthermore, I invested in a second monitor for my laptop, a habit from my software engineering days, which has virtually doubled my multitasking capabilities and efficiency. I’m no longer working from my bedroom, which has positively impacted my sleep and overall routine. My eating habits are also improving – a journey in progress, but definitely trending upward (check out a glimpse of my progress). This newfound efficiency means I have more time and mental energy for other enriching activities, demonstrating how small shifts can lead to significant positive ripple effects in daily life.

As predicted at the start of the year, 2015 is definitively shaping up to be the year of ‘less stuff’. While ‘The Great Purge’ of possessions might have begun in earnest back in 2014, the recent installation of some strategic new bookshelves in my office has dramatically accelerated my organization efforts. I’ve discovered a simple yet incredibly effective strategy: dedicating just 15 minutes on a specific day each week (the day varies, keeping it flexible) to simply begin sorting through an area. More often than not, I find myself deeply engrossed, continuing well past the initial 15-minute mark, and emerging with another section of the house thoroughly conquered. The image below, for instance, showcases the results of a marathon cleaning session that included my craft supply closet, Charlie’s impressive hoard of toys (tucked away under the guest bed), and all the packaging from recent deliveries (more on those exciting finds later!). But even on smaller scales, each week reliably sees me discarding unnecessary items and filling boxes destined for Goodwill. This systematic decluttering brings an immense sense of satisfaction, a feeling I’ve affectionately dubbed “The Pride in the Pile.” It’s not just about tidiness; it’s about reclaiming space and mental clarity.

While perfection is still a journey, I’m making significant strides in home organization and decluttering. It’s truly liberating! (And yes, you’re right, it’s ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’).

Regarding my goal of getting out of the house more, I’ve actively branched out, exploring new fitness groups and regularly meeting friends for dinner. While these activities don’t directly align with the “dating” aspect I originally mentioned in my goal list, they are incredibly effective in forcing me to step outside my comfort zone, meet new people, and infuse a healthy dose of fun into my week. It’s a win-win situation, enhancing my social well-being and keeping me active, proving that personal growth often manifests in unexpected, yet equally rewarding, ways. These efforts are crucial for maintaining a holistic lifestyle, especially when working remotely, preventing isolation and fostering a vibrant social life.

Blog Goals: Nurturing Creativity and Expanding Reach

My blogging objectives for the year are clear: achieve more regular posting, engage in small, creative DIY projects to share, and incorporate a few genuine personal updates. The current status? My blog is definitely picking up speed, and I’m thrilled with the progress.

While my ultimate aspiration is to return to a consistent schedule of 3 or 4 posts per week, maintaining a comfortable pace of 2 or 3 posts currently feels sustainable and allows for quality content creation. Consistency is key, and I’m committed to delivering valuable and engaging material. Just recently, I had the pleasure of sharing my creative DIY project for January, a charming needlepoint art piece, and I’m already overflowing with exciting ideas for my next hands-on endeavor. These smaller, achievable DIYs are perfect for inspiring readers and keeping my creative juices flowing. Additionally, the much-anticipated “love story” post is currently in draft form. As it’s a somewhat lengthy and deeply personal piece, it’s taking considerable time to meticulously go through and edit. My aim is to be as honest and authentic as possible without veering into overly sentimental territory, which is proving to be a more delicate balance than I initially anticipated. However, I’m confident it will be polished and ready for publication just in time for Valentine’s Day, and I’m genuinely excited to finally share this intimate reflection with my wonderful audience, fostering a deeper connection.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention this significant goal (again!): a complete blog redesign has been in the works for quite some time now. The most challenging aspect of this project stems from my own technical knowledge; because I understand how to alter backend functionality and implement various design elements myself, I often find myself caught in a cycle of indecision. The process of settling on a definitive layout and committing to it is incredibly tough. Just when I believe I’ve discovered an ideal way to organize content for enhanced navigation and aesthetics, a new idea sparks, sending me down an entirely different creative path. This iterative process, while thorough, can be time-consuming. However, I’m nearing a point where I’m confident I can live with the new design long-term, ensuring it provides an optimal user experience, improves site speed, and is fully SEO-friendly. Once I’ve finalized these critical decisions, the new design will be launched and ready for everyone to enjoy. So, stay tuned for that exciting reveal, as it will significantly enhance the blog’s functionality and visual appeal.

Home Goals: Transforming Living Spaces

My overarching home goals for the year involve a systematic overhaul of several key areas: the kitchen, laundry room, office, dining room, and exterior spaces. The current status indicates a promising start, with much more exciting progress on the horizon.

The kitchen is steadily becoming more organized and efficient, a continuous process of optimizing storage and workflow. My office, as mentioned earlier, has already undergone some truly major transformative changes, which have greatly enhanced its functionality and aesthetic. For a more detailed look into the evolving design plan and specific updates, you can refer to this dedicated post. Beyond the office, I’ve also been diligently working on projects in both the dining room and various exterior areas, which I haven’t had the chance to share publicly just yet. I am absolutely loving the direction these projects are taking, and the transformations are incredibly rewarding. A full reveal for these spaces is coming up very soon, so keep an eye out for those updates! In the meantime, you can catch a little sneak peek of the dining room on my Instagram. These ongoing home improvement endeavors are not just about aesthetics; they are about creating spaces that truly serve my lifestyle, reflect my personality, and bring daily joy.

All things considered, this initial month of 2015 has been remarkably productive and successful. It’s an especially positive turnaround, particularly when reflecting on 2014, a year that certainly left much to be desired. This strong start fills me with optimism and a renewed sense of purpose for the months ahead. What exciting goals have you set for yourself for February? I’d love to hear about your aspirations and the progress you’re making on your own journeys of personal growth, home improvement, or creative endeavors. Sharing our goals and achievements not only motivates us individually but also builds a supportive community that inspires us all to keep moving forward.
