We affectionately call this extensive undertaking “Ruby’s Revival,” and it’s a project that has already captured the imagination of many. It’s truly fascinating to observe how often passersby slow down, their eyes drawn to the unique charm of our vintage beauty. Our primary goal with these custom vinyl decals was not to create an overwhelming marketing campaign, but rather a friendly invitation. We understand that this is a niche interest, and while we’d love for Ruby’s story to reach far and wide, we also know that practical considerations are key. Most of Ruby’s original windows will eventually require replacement or significant repair as part of the full vintage camper renovation process. Therefore, these decals are a temporary enhancement, a charming interim solution to spark interest. However, even for a short-term application, getting the decals right matters. This particular project marked my very first experience applying such decals to any surface, and I quickly learned a few valuable lessons. For anyone contemplating a similar DIY project, whether it’s for a vintage trailer, a car, or even a home decor item, I’m happy to share some practical tips that I picked up along the way:
- **Preparation is Key:** Before you even think about placing your decal, ensure the surface is meticulously clean and dry. Any dust, grime, or moisture can compromise adhesion and lead to unsightly bubbles. Use a mild cleaner and a lint-free cloth, then allow it to air dry completely.

Other excellent options include a flexible putty spreader, or even a sturdy, unused gift card or credit card. Avoid anything with sharp edges that could scratch the decal or the surface.
- **The Hinge Method for Bubble-Free Application:** Start by securing one end of the decal (often the top edge) with painter’s tape to create a “hinge.” Peel back the protective backing paper from the opposite end (the bottom, if hinged at the top), cutting it away. Then, starting from the hinged edge and working your way down, use your scraping tool to firmly press the decal onto the surface. This technique allows you to attach one section at a time, forcing air bubbles out as you go, ensuring a smooth, even adhesion.
- **Apply in One Direction Only:** When using your scraping tool, always work in a consistent direction – for example, from the center outwards, or from top to bottom. Overlapping strokes or changing directions can trap air, creating bubbles that are difficult to remove later. Apply firm, even pressure to ensure the decal adheres thoroughly without stretching or distorting it.
- **Peeling Off the Transfer Tape:** Once the decal is firmly applied, it’s time to carefully remove the top layer of transfer tape. Do this slowly and at a sharp angle (almost parallel to the surface). This oblique angle minimizes the chance of accidentally peeling the decal back off the surface, especially if it’s a thin or intricate design. If any part of the decal lifts, simply press the transfer tape back down, rub over the area with your scraping tool, and try peeling again.
