Easy white washed wood ornaments for a rustic Christmas tree decor

Hello, fellow DIY enthusiasts! It’s Lindi here again from Love Create Celebrate. With the holiday season rapidly approaching, my mind is buzzing with creative project ideas. This time of year truly is my absolute favorite, and I find immense joy in crafting new ornaments to adorn our family Christmas tree. Last year, I shared a popular tutorial for a simple rustic pallet ornament. It was such a hit that I decided to revisit that beloved deer head design and incorporate it into a fresh, new ornament project for this year. The result is a set of stunning, easy-to-make ornaments that bring a timeless, cozy feel to your holiday decorations.

One of the best aspects of this project is its accessibility. You don’t need a specialized woodworking shop or expensive materials. In fact, if you happen to have a piece of scrap 1×6 inch pine board lying around from a previous project – perhaps from building a shelf, a small frame, or even a simple wooden sign – you already have the primary material needed for these delightful ornaments. I recently completed another DIY endeavor that left me with some perfect pine scraps, making this project not only fun but also eco-friendly by utilizing leftover materials.

Essential Tools and Materials for Your DIY Ornaments

Gathering your supplies is the first exciting step in any DIY adventure. For these white-washed reindeer ornaments, you’ll need a few specific tools, many of which you might already own or can easily borrow. The beauty of this craft lies in its simplicity and the ability to transform humble materials into something truly charming.

  • Scrap 1×6 inch Board: Pine or any soft wood works perfectly for easy cutting and staining. Look for clean, smooth pieces free of major cracks or knots.
  • Scroll Saw: Ideal for precise, intricate cuts on smaller pieces. If you don’t have one, a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade can work, or you could opt for pre-cut wood rounds available at craft stores.
  • Drill: Essential for creating the small hole needed to hang your ornaments. A handheld drill with a small wood bit (e.g., 1/8 inch) is sufficient.
  • White Wash Stain: This is the star of the show, providing that beautiful, transparent white finish that highlights the wood grain. Choose a water-based stain for easy cleanup.
  • Cricut Maker: While optional, a Cricut Maker (or similar cutting machine like a Silhouette Cameo) makes adding intricate designs effortlessly, opening up a world of customization.
  • Iron-on Vinyl: The material for your chosen design. Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) comes in a vast array of colors and finishes, allowing you to match any decor style.
  • Iron: To apply the iron-on vinyl firmly to your wooden ornaments. A standard household iron will do the trick, just ensure it has a “no-steam” setting.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your White Washed Ornaments

Now that you have all your materials ready, let’s dive into the fun part: making these gorgeous ornaments. Each step is designed to be straightforward, ensuring a smooth crafting experience, even for beginners, and leading you to a beautifully personalized holiday decoration.

Tracing circles onto a wooden board for DIY ornaments

Step 1: Mark Your Ornament Shapes

Begin by determining the ideal size for your ornaments. A common household item like a paint can lid, a large glass, or even a sturdy cookie cutter can serve as a perfect template. For this particular project, I opted for a paint can lid that measured approximately 3 inches in diameter, creating wonderfully sized circles suitable for ornaments. Place your chosen template onto your scrap wood and carefully trace around it with a pencil. Make sure to space your circles efficiently on the board to maximize your material and minimize waste.

Cutting traced wooden circles with a scroll saw

Step 2: Cut Out the Wooden Circles

Once your circles are meticulously traced, it’s time to bring out your scroll saw. A scroll saw is an excellent tool for making intricate and curved cuts, making it ideal for these circular shapes. If you don’t own a scroll saw, a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade can also be used, though it might require a bit more practice for perfectly smooth curves. The easiest approach to cutting is to first cut the larger wood piece into smaller, more manageable sections, each containing one or two traced circles. This makes handling the wood much safer and easier as you carefully follow your pencil lines. Remember, don’t fret if your circles aren’t absolutely perfect – a slightly irregular shape only adds to the authentic, rustic, and handmade charm of these unique ornaments. Imperfections are what truly give handmade items their unique character and tell a story.

Drilling a small hole at the top of a wooden ornament

Step 3: Drill Hanging Holes

After your wooden circles are neatly cut and perhaps lightly sanded to remove any rough edges, you’ll need a functional way to hang them. Using a drill with a small drill bit (ensure the bit size is appropriate for the thickness of the jute string or ribbon you plan to use), carefully make a hole near the top edge of each ornament. Precision is key here: ensure the hole is centered horizontally and not too close to the edge to prevent the wood from splitting. A good rule of thumb is to position it about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the top edge. This precisely drilled hole will be where you thread your chosen hanger, allowing your beautiful creations to dangle gracefully and securely from your Christmas tree branches.

Applying whitewash wood stain to a wooden ornament

Step 4: Apply Whitewash Stain for a Rustic Finish

This is arguably my favorite part of the entire process – applying the whitewash wood stain! I recently discovered this type of stain, and I’m utterly captivated by its transformative effects. It’s a game-changer for anyone looking to achieve a light, airy, and beautifully textured look on wood. Unlike opaque paint, whitewash stain subtly mutes the natural color of the wood while allowing its unique grain patterns and knots to truly shine through. This creates a soft, almost ethereal finish that wonderfully enhances the rustic charm of the ornaments, giving them a timeless quality. Apply the stain according to the manufacturer’s instructions, typically with a brush or a clean rag, wiping off any excess for an even, translucent coat. Ensure you let it dry completely before moving on to the next step, as proper drying is crucial for the adhesion of the vinyl.

Step 5: Design and Personalize Your Ornaments

With your wooden ornaments meticulously cut and beautifully stained, it’s now time to add the defining personal touch – your chosen design! If you possess a steady hand and artistic flair, you might confidently choose to freehand a design with a fine paint brush and acrylic paints. Alternatively, stencils offer a fantastic and accessible way to create crisp, repeatable patterns on your ornaments. However, for unparalleled precision, intricate details, and remarkable ease, I highly recommend leveraging the power of a Cricut Maker for this step.

Cricut Maker cutting iron-on vinyl for ornament designs

The Cricut Maker has truly become one of my indispensable tools for a multitude of DIY projects, revolutionizing how I approach crafting. For those unfamiliar, it’s essentially a versatile smart cutting machine that acts like a mini CNC for various thin materials, including paper, vinyl, fabric, leather, and even delicate woods. For these specific ornaments, we’ll be utilizing its precision capabilities to expertly cut intricate designs from iron-on vinyl, also widely known as heat transfer vinyl (HTV). This material adheres wonderfully to wood, creating a durable and professional-looking finish.

To make it even easier for you to replicate this enchanting project, I’ve thoughtfully shared my specific reindeer design in the Cricut Design Space, which you can access HERE. Simply open the provided link, ensure your Cricut Maker is connected, and click the “Make It” button within the software. Your machine will then accurately and efficiently cut the chosen design onto your iron-on vinyl. If you opt for a different design, perhaps a snowflake, a monogram, or a festive phrase, remember to meticulously size it appropriately for your 3-inch (or whatever size you chose) wooden ornaments.

Weeding excess iron-on vinyl from a cut design

Step 6: “Weeding” Your Vinyl Design

Once your Cricut machine has completed its precise cutting, you’ll embark on the crucial step known as “weeding” the vinyl. This process involves carefully and methodically peeling away all the excess vinyl material that is not an integral part of your desired design. You should be left with only the reindeer silhouette (or whatever shape you chose) firmly attached to a clear, shiny protective carrier sheet. This carrier sheet is absolutely crucial, as it holds your intricate design together and protects it during the upcoming heat application process, ensuring every delicate detail remains intact.

Step 7: Heat Pressing the Vinyl Design

Now, with your weeded design ready, carefully position the vinyl onto the center of your beautifully whitewashed wooden ornament. Ensure the shiny carrier side is facing upwards, covering the vinyl design. Set your household iron to a medium-high temperature, making absolutely certain that the steam setting is completely OFF. Steam can interfere with the vinyl’s adhesion. Gently and firmly press the iron over the design, holding it in place for approximately 10-15 seconds. You might need to slightly move the iron around to ensure even heat distribution across the entire design, especially if your design is larger than the iron’s heating plate. The consistent heat activates the adhesive on the iron-on vinyl, creating a strong, permanent bond with the wood surface.

Peeling off the clear carrier sheet from the applied vinyl design

Step 8: Revealing Your Finished Design

Once the vinyl has been adequately heated and adhered to the wooden surface, allow the ornament to cool completely for a minute or two. This cooling period is important as it allows the adhesive to set properly. Then, carefully and slowly peel away the clear protective carrier sheet. Begin from one corner and pull back gently. If you notice any part of the vinyl lifting with the sheet, simply lay the carrier sheet back down, repress that area with the iron for a few more seconds, and try peeling again once cooled. When done correctly, the carrier sheet will detach effortlessly, revealing your beautiful, professional-looking vinyl design permanently affixed to the wooden ornament. You’ll be absolutely amazed at the polished finish you’ve achieved with such ease!

Personalizing Your Handcrafted Ornaments

I am absolutely thrilled with how these white-washed wooden reindeer ornaments turned out! The combination of the warm, rustic wood peeking through the delicate whitewash is simply captivating, creating a soft yet inviting aesthetic. For my own home decor, I chose a chic navy blue vinyl for the reindeer designs, as I’m currently decorating with a classic blue and white holiday theme this year. However, this is precisely where your personal creativity can truly shine! Imagine these ornaments with vibrant red vinyl for a more traditional and festive look, sparkling gold or silver for an elegant and glamorous touch, or even a soft pastel for a whimsical and ethereal feel. You can also experiment with a multitude of different designs – think intricate snowflakes, personalized monograms, heartfelt festive quotes, or even tiny stylized winter scenes. The possibilities for personalization are truly endless, making each ornament uniquely yours and a perfect reflection of your holiday style.
