Embracing Spring’s Full Splendor in Atlanta: A Home Transformed by Color
As the vibrant energy of spring awakens, Atlanta truly comes alive, and for our home, this season is synonymous with a glorious burst of color. It’s a cherished annual tradition, though one often fraught with a particular challenge unique to our Southern climate. Every year, I find myself battling the urge to jump ahead, reminding myself to exercise patience and allow the month of March to fully unfold. You see, Atlanta has a playful, albeit deceptive, way of ushering in spring. Typically, by the end of February, we’re blessed with several weeks of blissfully warm weather, lulling us into a false sense of security that spring has well and truly arrived. But this, my friends, is merely a trick – a stealthy, cunning ruse played by Mother Nature herself.
Just when I’ve wholeheartedly embraced the notion that the frosty days are behind us, and my thoughts turn excitedly to preparing the garden beds for new life, that’s precisely when the final, biting gasp of winter reappears. A sudden cold snap, often bringing freezing temperatures, threatens to undo all the premature planting and eager anticipation. It’s a recurring drama in the Atlanta gardening calendar, testing the resolve of even the most seasoned green thumbs.
Do I, however, heed this annual warning? Noooooope, not entirely. The allure of introducing fresh, vivid color to the yard is simply too strong to resist, pushing me to skip ahead of the official schedule. This year, though, I took my cue from a reliable harbinger of spring: the purple phlox. Planted several springs ago, these resilient beauties have become my personal signal, blooming profusely and giving me the green light to proceed with my colorful aspirations. Their cheerful display is an undeniable sign that the time is right to infuse the garden with even more life and vibrancy.

And just as I had envisioned when I first planted them, the creeping phlox have been nothing short of spectacular. They’ve spread with an admirable vigor, filling in the garden bed beautifully and practically blanketing the entire area with a lush carpet of purple. It’s incredibly satisfying to witness a perennial thriving exactly as intended, providing not only stunning visual appeal but also effective ground cover, suppressing weeds and retaining soil moisture. This success truly fuels my enthusiasm for expanding the garden’s palette.
(P.S. As a little bonus for all my fellow plant enthusiasts and aspiring gardeners, I’ve decided to incorporate helpful photo cards like the one above for my various plants throughout the year. These are designed to be easily pinnable, allowing you to save them for future garden ideas and inspiration. Over my years of gardening, I’ve experienced a fair share of trial and error in different parts of the house and yard. My hope is that these cards will serve as a handy resource, particularly for new gardeners seeking easy-care plant ideas and proven successes.)
After eight years of dedicated practice, I must admit, I’m finally developing a decent knack for keeping plants not just alive, but truly thriving. What began as a cautious exploration of gardening has blossomed into a confident pursuit of horticultural beauty. Yet, my ambition doesn’t stop there. Of course not, right? The joy of gardening lies in constantly raising the bar and challenging oneself to cultivate new species and designs. This year, I’m yearning for more than just the familiar delights of my established hydrangeas, the reliable charm of the phlox, and the dependable structure of various shrubs. This season, my sights are set on an undeniable symbol of garden elegance: I want roses.
Transforming the Side Garden: A Breakthrough in Design and Functionality
One of the most exciting new additions, and a project I’ve been particularly anxious to get underway, involves these truly gorgeous multi-colored roses. Classified as “shrub trees,” their unique growth habit and stunning blooms will create a dramatic focal point along the side of the house. These aren’t just any roses; their intricate blend of colors promises a dynamic display that will evolve throughout the season, adding depth and visual interest to an area that has historically been a challenging design puzzle.

For those of you who have been following my home improvement journey for a while, you’ll undoubtedly recall this particular area. However, it might take seeing another picture of its former state to truly jog your memory. This side garden has been one of those persistent, long-term, and somewhat frustrating projects that I just couldn’t seem to crack. It was a dangling thread in my overall home aesthetic, an area that consistently stumped my creative vision.

I’ve certainly given it a number of attempts over the years, trying various plants – including some budget-friendly finds from a sale at a local nursery – but I never truly approached it with a comprehensive, well-thought-out “plan.” The space itself presents unique challenges: it’s long and notably narrow, running parallel to the pathway that separates my property from the neighbor’s fence and leads back to the backyard gate. On the upside, it receives full, unfiltered sunlight throughout the day, which theoretically offers a wealth of planting options. Perhaps this abundance of choice was precisely the cause of my perennial indecision. With so many possibilities, it was difficult to commit to a single vision, leaving the space in a perpetual state of flux.

Last spring, I undertook a crucial practical upgrade for this area by installing a sturdy cement slab designed specifically to house the trash can and recycling bin. This seemingly minor addition was spurred by necessity; as of this year, and particularly with K having moved in, our household’s recycling volume had increased significantly, necessitating a second full-size bin rather than just a small container. The newly poured slab proved to be the absolute perfect size, providing a stable, clean, and organized spot for these essential but often unsightly items.

However, while incredibly functional, an exposed concrete slab with two large bins is not exactly the picture of charm and curb appeal, especially considering the first section of this side garden is visible directly from the street. I had, of course, chosen this particular spot for other practical reasons, which I thoroughly covered back in this detailed post. So, the only genuine “plan” I had in motion for this area began a couple of years prior when I started constructing a frame for a wooden screen. The clear intention was to use this screen to discreetly hide the bins once the concrete slab was finally in place, thus harmonizing practicality with aesthetics.

I am thrilled to report that I finally completed the construction of the wooden screen and successfully installed it in the front section of the side garden. This DIY project has made a truly remarkable difference, perfectly concealing both the concrete slab and the two full-size bins from view. This transformation represents one GIANT leap in the right direction for the aesthetic and functional improvement of this long-neglected garden space. It’s incredibly rewarding to see a long-term vision finally come to fruition, turning an eyesore into an integrated part of the garden design.

And wouldn’t you know it? The moment I managed to conquer one of the biggest, most persistent obstacles my yard has had for years – the unsightly trash bins – inspiration struck with an immediate and powerful force. Boom! The very next week, my long-suffering side garden received the burst of creative energy and clear vision it had been desperately needing. It’s as if removing the practical blockage cleared the way for aesthetic ideas to flow freely, a common experience in many home improvement endeavors where solving a functional problem unlocks a wave of design possibilities. This newfound clarity finally provided the direction for transforming this challenging space into a beautiful, vibrant rose garden.
Just the other day, during a routine visit to Lowe’s, I stumbled upon these truly exquisite roses. What makes them particularly unique is that they are two distinct varieties that have been grown together in a single pot, simultaneously producing both “white iceberg” and “burgundy iceberg” flowers. The effect is simply breathtaking – a harmonious blend of pristine white and rich, deep burgundy blooms all from one plant. They were incredibly fragrant, abundant with healthy buds, and clearly ready to be planted immediately. Seeing their sheer beauty and potential, I became so excited that I bought every single one I could find at the store, envisioning them as the crowning jewels of my revitalized side garden. Their elegant structure and prolific flowering habit make them an ideal choice for creating a striking, continuous display of color.

Over the past weekend, I eagerly set about planting all the roses I had purchased. However, in my excitement, I somewhat underestimated the total number I’d actually need to adequately fill the entire length of the side garden and achieve the lush, continuous look I’m aiming for. I still have a bit more to acquire, but once I gather a few more plants and get them securely in the ground, I promise to share a comprehensive before & after of the entire transformed side garden. The vision is nearly complete, and the final reveal will certainly be worth the wait, showcasing the dramatic impact of these gorgeous new rose additions.
Breaking Ground: Starting Our Very First Vegetable Garden!
Beyond the vibrant flowers and revamped side garden, another exciting “first” is well underway: the establishment of our very own vegetable garden! K has been passionately advocating for us to embark on this project for over a year, and I’m finally on board. Together, we’ve carefully selected our seeds, acquired all the necessary starter supplies, and are now planning to construct a couple of raised garden beds in the backyard. These beds will be strategically located near where the new shed is planned to go, creating a cohesive and productive outdoor living space. This endeavor marks a significant personal milestone for me, as I’ve never actually grown my own food before. While my parents maintained a small garden when I was younger, I didn’t actively participate in its upkeep. Consequently, I’m largely deferring to K’s expertise and enthusiasm, allowing him to take the reins until our seedlings begin to flourish. I must admit, however, that I’ve already found immense enjoyment in the initial stages, particularly watching the little starter pods expand and carefully planting all the tiny seeds. It’s a surprisingly meditative and rewarding process. I’ll be sure to document and share the entire journey, from seed to harvest, once our seedlings are ready for transplanting – a few of them already look like they’ve started to sprout, so that should be in just a couple of weeks!

So, I suppose that makes it two major outdoor projects successfully completed, which, in the true spirit of home improvement and gardening, have been almost immediately replaced with two more exciting ventures. That’s simply the nature of the beast, isn’t it? The journey of transforming a house into a home, and a yard into a sanctuary, is an ongoing, evolving process filled with continuous discovery and new challenges. Besides these garden updates, I also have several other projects currently in various stages of completion around the house.
