Plead The Fifty Percent Off

The thrill of a successful shopping spree is unmatched, especially when furnishing a new home. Picture this: one whirlwind day, one sturdy truck, and the invaluable assistance of two incredibly helpful (and patient!) parents. Our mission? To track down essential pieces that would transform our house into a home. By the end of it all, we had secured an impressive NINE new pieces of furniture, along with a stunning light fixture destined for the kitchen island – an island that, coincidentally, is still awaiting its own discovery! This particular day wasn’t just productive; it was a monumental win for our home decorating journey.

I. Scored. BIG.

While the urge to immediately share every single detail of my recent retail conquests is overwhelming, I’ve decided to practice a little restraint. Instead of an epic, potentially overwhelming single post, I’ll be unveiling each lucky find in more manageable, easy-to-digest segments. This approach isn’t solely for your benefit; it’s also a convenient excuse for my current state of creative exhaustion, preventing me from crafting one exceptionally long post that you might abandon halfway through. Surely, the process of selecting and purchasing furniture is just as captivating for you as it is for me, right? Perhaps not? Well, then, dividing the story truly seems like the sensible choice. Let’s dive right into the first two remarkable additions.

Discovering Versatility: The HomeGoods Storage Bench

Our first stop yielded a fantastic find: a charming storage bench from the clearance section at HomeGoods, priced at less than $50. Initially, I had envisioned a larger bench for our dining room, a concept I explored in a previous post about my dining room dilemmas. However, this particular bench, while not quite meeting the dining room’s scale, proved to be an incredibly versatile piece perfectly suited for our living room. Its compact size and integrated storage make it an ideal spot for stowing away Colby’s collection of toys, keeping our main living area tidy and organized. It’s also fantastic for neatly folding and storing extra blankets, readily accessible for cozy evenings.

Beyond daily utility, this bench is poised to play a crucial role during our upcoming housewarming party in November. Its sturdy design provides a convenient extra seat, ensuring all our guests have a comfortable spot to relax and socialize. The ability to serve multiple functions – storage, seating, and decorative accent – highlights the importance of choosing furniture that adapts to evolving needs and spaces. Finding such a piece on clearance was truly a win-win, allowing us to enhance our home’s functionality without breaking the bank. It’s a prime example of how strategic shopping can yield stylish and practical solutions, proving that quality and utility don’t always come with a hefty price tag. This versatile piece of home decor exemplifies smart shopping and creative interior design.

The Recliner Compromise: Finding Scott’s “Noncliner”

The next item on our list, a piece I affectionately call Scott’s “noncliner,” was actually a significant point of negotiation in our home furnishing journey, as hinted in my shopping list from Friday. The backstory behind this particular purchase is a classic tale of marital compromise in the realm of interior design. Scott, bless his heart, had one unwavering request for our new living room: a recliner. My immediate reaction? A firm “I don’t think so.” He pleaded, and I, in turn, stubbornly insisted, “I still don’t wanna.” The aesthetic battle lines were drawn.

However, the tides turned dramatically when Scott took on the Herculean task of single-handedly installing our beautiful laminate flooring throughout nearly the entire first floor of the house – a monumental effort that truly transformed our living space (and was almost complete!). Faced with such dedication and hard work, my resolve began to waver. How could I deny him this one comfort after such a significant contribution to our home? With a deep, albeit begrudging, sigh, I agreed to embark on the quest for his coveted recliner while he was out of town for a football game. The mission was clear: find a recliner that he would love, and I could tolerate, or perhaps, even appreciate. This pivotal moment highlighted the importance of compromise in home decorating, balancing personal preferences with shared living aspirations.

Bridging Comfort and Style: The Recliner Dilemma

Don’t misunderstand me; I fully grasp the appeal of recliners. I understand the profound comfort they offer, the sheer bliss of kicking back and relaxing after a long day. My reluctance stemmed purely from an aesthetic standpoint. It seems that this heavenly comfort often comes encased in designs that, to my eyes, resemble what happens when you accidentally put a marshmallow in the microwave for too long, then inexplicably cover the expanded, lumpy form in what appears to be sharpei pelts. The typical oversized, overstuffed, and often visually heavy recliner simply didn’t align with the cleaner, more modern aesthetic I envisioned for our living space. The challenge was immense: how to find a piece that delivered on Scott’s comfort requirements without compromising my design sensibilities? It was a true test of balancing functionality with modern interior design principles.

Example of an oversized, traditional recliner

The breakthrough came with this particular chair from Rooms to Go. It’s what I affectionately dubbed a noncliner. Unlike its bulky counterparts, it presents itself as a sleek, simple upholstered armchair, unassuming and elegant. Its secret lies within: hidden reclining powers, very stealth indeed. This design marvel seamlessly integrates comfort and style, offering the best of both worlds without the visual clutter often associated with traditional recliners. It was a true discovery, a testament that modern furniture design can indeed cater to both form and function without sacrificing one for the other. This recliner, with its refined appearance, promised to blend beautifully with our existing decor, finally resolving our long-standing furniture debate and becoming a cornerstone of comfortable seating in our living room.

The Journey to Home: From Store to Assembly

After a thorough test drive in the store, Scott gave his enthusiastic thumbs-up, signaling approval for his stealthy new comfort zone. My part of the bargain seemed straightforward: purchase the chair and bring it home. Or so I naively thought. As it turns out, many large furniture retailers, including Rooms to Go, don’t always have pieces readily available for immediate pickup on site. This presented me with two choices: either pay a $39 delivery fee and commit to being available for a wide window of several hours (or even days) for delivery, or opt for customer pickup directly from their nearest warehouse. My strong suit has never been patience, especially when excited about a new home addition, so I decisively chose the latter. The thought of waiting indefinitely for a delivery truck was simply unbearable, especially when tackling a new home furnishing project.

While I’m sure not all furniture warehouses operate identically, our experience at this particular pickup site left much to be desired in terms of speedy customer service. Upon arrival, we were informed that the wait would be a mere twenty minutes. What transpired, however, was a significantly extended period of over an hour and twenty minutes – perhaps I missed the “hour” part of the initial estimate amidst the bustle. The wait felt interminable, a test of wills, but finally, we departed with Scott’s new chair. To our mild surprise, it came in pieces. Yes, this elegant recliner, a beacon of modern design, required assembly. This unexpected twist in the furniture acquisition process certainly added an element of adventure to our home improvement efforts.

Fortunately, the assembly process was far less daunting than anticipated. Once my parents and I got the components home, it took us less than ten minutes to put it all together. It was surprisingly easy, a true “easy peasy” task that proved the benefits of DIY assembly for some furniture pieces. A few floor protection stickies were applied to each leg, a small but essential step to safeguard our newly installed laminate flooring from scratches. With those final touches, the chair was officially ready for its intended purpose: facilitating long, comfortable naps, endless hours of ESPN viewing, and becoming Scott’s ultimate relaxation station. It was immensely satisfying to see the chair assembled and in place, a tangible result of our combined efforts and a successful resolution to our recliner debate, adding both comfort and style to our home decor.

Smart Spending: Value and Versatility in Home Decor

Reflecting on these first two significant acquisitions, the total cost for both pieces came in at a remarkable $350. This figure is particularly impressive considering it includes a three-year warranty and a specialized leather treatment for Scott’s new recliner, adding an extra layer of protection and longevity to our investment. When considering furniture for a new home, finding pieces that offer both aesthetic appeal and practical value is paramount. I firmly believe both the storage bench and the “noncliner” meet these criteria perfectly, demonstrating that budget-friendly home decor doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or style.

From a design perspective, both pieces are proportional to the size of their respective rooms, avoiding the common pitfall of overwhelming the space. They also pair exceptionally well with our existing couch, achieving a cohesive yet thoughtfully curated look without appearing too “matchy-matchy.” This subtle coordination is key to creating an inviting and dynamic interior, reflecting a sophisticated approach to interior design. The storage bench, purchased at such an incredibly low price, offers an added advantage: if our style preferences evolve or the fabric becomes worn, I can easily recover it without feeling as though I’m wasting a substantial investment. Furthermore, its light color and versatile design ensure it would seamlessly blend into other rooms of the house, should we decide to repurpose it elsewhere in the future. This flexibility is a significant asset in any decorating scheme, allowing for adaptability and longevity in our furniture choices.

These initial finds truly set the tone for our home furnishing journey, balancing style, comfort, and affordability. They represent the careful thought and strategic planning that goes into making a house feel like a home, one well-chosen piece at a time. I’m incredibly excited to continue sharing the rest of our nine finds in upcoming posts, detailing how each one contributes to the evolving personality of our living space and offering more home decor inspiration. Stay tuned for more insights into our journey to create a stylish and comfortable home on a sensible budget.
