Crisp Winds, Chicago Gold

Get ready for an immersive journey through one of America’s most captivating cities! Last week, I embarked on a memorable short trip to Chicago, packed with exciting concerts, extensive sightseeing, and heartwarming visits with dear friends now residing there. I often joke with my Atlanta friends, promising to magically whisk our sunny and warm weather with me wherever I travel. Despite the playful absurdity of such a claim, I genuinely believe I delivered on that promise this time around. It certainly helped that I witnessed the city at one of its most breathtaking times of the year – the glorious autumn season – but I’m absolutely taking a little credit for the spectacular weather. The entire experience was nothing short of stunning.

Autumn splendor in Chicago

Having visited Chicago numerous times before, it had still been about five years since my last adventure in the Windy City. So, when I heard whispers of a concert I was absolutely desperate to see, I immediately reached out to a friend, eagerly asking if I could crash for a few days. And honestly, I don’t recall Chicago ever looking quite this beautiful. The vibrant fall colors, the crisp air, and the city’s unique charm truly aligned to create an unforgettable backdrop. Since sharing travel experiences (even through a blog post) can be incredibly enjoyable and inspiring, I couldn’t wait to share the highlights of this incredible journey with you before we dive back into our regular DIY updates. Consider this your virtual Chicago escape!

Exploring Chicago on Foot: A City Walker’s Paradise

My previous trips to Chicago blur a bit in terms of airport specifics, but I vividly remember my arrival at O’Hare this time. The view from the terminal offered a mesmerizing display of lights and structural art, keeping me captivated until I met my friend at baggage claim. The intricate, globe-like patterns and twinkling lights reminded me of some cutting-edge light fixtures I’ve recently admired. I’m a complete enthusiast for any decor that features spherical shapes or enchanting illumination, so O’Hare instantly won me over with its unique aesthetic.

Coming from Atlanta, a city not exactly renowned for its public transportation system, Chicago’s iconic “L” train felt incredibly charming and efficient. As I spotted its elevated tracks winding through the urban landscape, carrying commuters and tourists alike, I was genuinely impressed. While my friend insisted I’d likely witness sparks flying from the tracks at night – a spectacle I unfortunately missed – I still found myself drawn to the striking contrast between the older, robust steel construction of the L tracks and the sleek, modern skyscrapers that formed the city’s backdrop. It’s a testament to Chicago’s rich history blended seamlessly with its contemporary vibrancy.

My previous visit had been rather light on landmark exploration, so my friend wisely suggested a leisurely stroll through Millennium Park. This iconic urban oasis, celebrated for its public art and green spaces, provided the perfect setting for some classic Chicago sightseeing. Naturally, our tour included a mandatory stop at Cloud Gate, affectionately known as “The Bean.” With countless visitors touching its gleaming surface throughout the day, the polished steel appeared quite smudged upon closer inspection. Yet, this didn’t diminish its allure in the slightest. The reflective sculpture offered spectacular, distorted views of the city skyline and the vibrant fall trees, creating a dynamic, ever-changing portrait of Chicago’s autumn beauty.

During our walks, I stumbled upon this particular building, which, while not a famous landmark, instantly caught my eye. There’s nothing particularly significant about its historical background or grand scale; I simply found its architectural details and overall aesthetic incredibly charming and cute. It was a delightful little discovery, adding to the visual richness of the city’s diverse architecture.

On a personal note, just a few weeks before this Chicago adventure, I acquired a new hat from a local market, and I am utterly smitten with it. Historically, hats haven’t been a staple in my wardrobe, but this one has completely captured my heart – I can barely bring myself to take it off! Prepare yourselves, because you’ll undoubtedly be seeing this fantastic accessory making regular appearances in my upcoming tutorial videos and blog posts. (And to my family, just in case you’re struggling for holiday gift ideas, rest assured, it comes in several other colors!). This hat has truly become an unexpected travel companion and a new personal style statement.

With a carpet of vibrant fall leaves swirling everywhere, each neighborhood we traversed on our city walks transformed into an irresistible photo opportunity. The golden hues, fiery reds, and rich browns created a breathtaking natural spectacle, perfectly complementing Chicago’s urban charm. Every corner offered a picturesque scene, a perfect blend of natural beauty and architectural grandeur. And speaking of those glorious fall leaves…

I know I’ve already shared this particular image, but its sheer beauty demands a second look. Just behold this breathtaking autumn vista. BAM. It’s truly a sight worth savoring, encapsulating the essence of Chicago in its most glorious seasonal attire. The city truly shines when enveloped in these vibrant fall colors, creating a memorable experience for anyone lucky enough to witness it.

Swoon. Call it basic if you wish, but this magnificent display of autumn foliage in Chicago truly gave me heart-eyes. The explosion of color, the crisp air, and the overall ambiance of the city dressed in its fall best was absolutely captivating. It was a moment of pure visual delight that truly reminded me of the simple, yet profound, beauty of nature within an urban setting.

Gazing at the Iconic Chicago Skyline

One of the true privileges of my visit was the unparalleled access to Chicago’s magnificent skyline. Since my friend resides in a high-rise apartment in the vibrant West Loop area, I had endless opportunities to capture some truly spectacular skyline photos. Whether bathed in the golden light of day or sparkling under the night sky, the panoramic view from their vantage point was nothing short of incredible. Each moment offered a different perspective, showcasing the architectural prowess and dynamic energy of the city below.

Among the many architectural marvels, one particular building stood out for its ingenious design. Its unique, curved base is specifically engineered so that as you walk along the riverwalk at ground level, the precise angle of the curve reflects the Chicago River, creating a stunning and seamless visual connection between the architecture and its natural surroundings. It’s a subtle yet brilliant detail that speaks volumes about Chicago’s commitment to thoughtful urban design and its harmonious integration with the environment.

And as you might have heard, during my visit, Chicago was experiencing a rather peculiar and widespread phenomenon: “W’s” seemed to be absolutely everywhere across the entire city! It was an intriguing sight, adorning buildings, banners, and even reflections. One might ponder the meaning behind such a pervasive symbol… what could it possibly signify? A little insider humor for those in the know!

*KIDDING, folks! It’s an homage to the legendary Chicago Cubs and their historic World Series victory! Massive congratulations, Cubbies, on breaking that 108-year drought!

Soaking in the Celebratory Atmosphere of Wrigleyville

There was no way I was going to miss the chance to see Wrigley Field, especially not after the legendary 108-year wait for the Chicago Cubs to clinch a World Series title! The energy in the city, particularly around Wrigleyville, was absolutely electric, a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. While most of my photos don’t fully capture the sheer magnitude of the crowds (I consciously tried to keep strangers out of my shots), I was truly awestruck by the number of people celebrating. It was, quite frankly, ridiculously crowded. I managed to share some video clips on Snapchat during my trip, so I hope some of you got a glimpse of the incredible atmosphere!

One of the most touching aspects of the post-World Series celebration was witnessing Wrigley Field’s outer bleacher walls, nearly every brick of which was covered in heartfelt chalk messages. Many of these poignant notes were written in memory of departed Cubs fans who, tragically, didn’t live to see their beloved team finally win the World Series. It was an incredibly moving sight to behold in person, especially seeing so many children and entire families, all dressed in their Cubs gear, contributing to this impromptu memorial. Since my departure, the tradition of chalk messages has been discontinued for the season, but experiencing what Chicago fans fervently hope will become the birth of a new post-season tradition felt profoundly cool and exceptionally special. It was a beautiful testament to loyalty, community, and the enduring spirit of baseball.

A Culinary Journey Through Chicago: Indulgence and Delights

Let’s be absolutely clear about one undeniable truth of this trip: my face was enthusiastically stuffed with an abundance of delicious food. Chicago’s culinary scene is legendary, and I made it my personal mission to sample as much of it as possible. From deep-dish pizza to gourmet delights, every meal was an adventure and a delightful indulgence that added another layer of enjoyment to my visit. Truly, no apologies for the gastronomic journey!

Yes, you read that right. That entire delicious pizza was ALL mine. A glorious moment of pure, unadulterated culinary bliss in Chicago!

The sublime Chicago weather during my visit was absolutely perfect for al fresco dining in most instances, and that’s precisely what we reveled in. There’s something incredibly special about enjoying a fantastic meal outdoors, soaking in the city’s ambiance. Oh, and I’m discovering a newfound, deep appreciation for Old-Fashioneds – provided they’re crafted with a generous amount of citrus to brighten the flavors, and ideally, enjoyed while watching plenty of football. It was the perfect pairing of sophisticated libations and relaxed entertainment, epitomizing a truly wonderful dining experience.

And finally, we arrive at the pièce de résistance – dessert! My friend playfully commented that I seemed a little “skinny” lately (a topic I actually plan to delve into more deeply in a future post, as there’s a bit of a story there involving this summer, so stay tuned!). To remedy this perceived skinniness, we made a delightful pilgrimage to Bar Siena one evening. Our mission? To indulge in their famous bombolonis – delightful, puffy Italian donuts – and a truly colossal ice cream sandwich. I promise, I did share… a little! The absolute highlight, hands down, was the candied pretzel bites generously sprinkled on top. They added the perfect salty-sweet crunch to an already incredible dessert. #nomnomnom, indeed!

Beyond the Sights: Connections, Concerts, and Cherished Moments

Does the face below look familiar? If you’re a long-time reader or fellow blogger, it should! It’s none other than Ann Marie from the wonderful blog, White House Black Shutters! Typically, our paths only cross at blog-related events and functions, such as the Haven Conference. So, it was an absolute joy and a truly special experience to meet some of her lovely children and spend a relaxed afternoon catching up with her at the zoo. I’m continually amazed and profoundly grateful for how this blog has become a conduit for some of the most meaningful and genuine friendships in my life. I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet Ann Marie, or so many other incredible people, without it. And for that, I am so thankful. <3 These connections truly enrich my life in countless ways.

The primary reason for this entire Chicago excursion wasn’t just to visit friends, but also to catch a live performance by one of my absolute favorite artists, Joshua Radin. This trip served as a much-anticipated make-up for having regrettably missed his concert in Atlanta earlier this summer (I was out of town at the time). I typically don’t make a big fuss over meet-and-greet opportunities, but to my complete surprise and utter delight, I spotted him just as he was making a beeline back to his tour bus after an incredible show. He graciously agreed to a quick photo, and while the excitement is clearly visible on my face, his calm demeanor suggests he’s well-accustomed to such encounters! It was a fantastic end to an already amazing night.

All in all, this Chicago trip stands out as one of the very best I’ve ever had. Traveling holds such profound restorative power for me; it consistently helps me discover a sense of inner peace and serves as a powerful reminder of the vastness and beauty of the world around me, which is always a valuable perspective to reflect upon. There’s so much truth in the popular “pay for experiences, not things” mentality, and this visit to Chicago truly embodied that spirit. More than just a destination, the city even managed to evoke a rare and comforting home-away-from-home feeling, which is an experience I consider truly unique and deeply cherished. It left me refreshed, inspired, and deeply connected to the vibrant pulse of urban life and the warmth of genuine friendships.
