Kitchen Walls All Freshly Painted!

Transforming the Heart of the Home: A Kitchen Wall Painting Saga Completed

There’s a unique satisfaction that comes with completing a major home renovation milestone. In our ongoing journey to revitalize the kitchen, seeing the pantry door finally back in place feels almost surreal. It’s a simple act, yet it symbolizes a monumental achievement: the kitchen walls are officially DONE. This wasn’t just a quick coat of paint; it was a comprehensive restoration that transformed tired, neglected surfaces into a canvas of fresh possibilities.

From Grimy to Gleaming: The Journey of Our Kitchen Walls

The path to these smooth, beautifully painted walls was a meticulous one, involving several crucial steps that any DIY enthusiast tackling a similar project would recognize. Each stage, while demanding, contributed to the overall success and longevity of the finish.

  • Wallpaper Removal: The initial hurdle was stripping away layers of old wallpaper, a notoriously messy and often frustrating task. Patience and the right tools were key to avoiding damage to the underlying drywall.
  • Skim Coating & Sanding: Once the wallpaper was gone, the walls revealed imperfections, uneven textures, and remnants of old adhesive. Skim coating involved applying thin layers of joint compound to create a uniformly smooth surface. This step is critical for a high-quality paint finish, as paint will only look as good as the surface beneath it. Countless hours were spent meticulously sanding and re-sanding to achieve a perfectly smooth, unblemished foundation.
  • Priming: A high-quality primer was then applied. This not only seals the new skim coat but also provides a consistent base for the paint, ensuring better adhesion and a more uniform color payoff. Primer is especially important when covering dark colors or dealing with porous surfaces.
  • Bubble Removal: Despite careful preparation, sometimes small bubbles can appear during skim coating or priming. Identifying and addressing these early on prevents them from showing through the final paint layers.
  • Painting: Finally, the moment of truth arrived with the application of the chosen paint color. This multi-step preparation process truly paid off, allowing the paint to glide on smoothly and achieve a professional-grade finish.

A Dramatic Transformation: Before & After the Wall Makeover

To truly appreciate the transformation, it’s essential to recall the “before.” Our kitchen used to have a very different vibe, one that reflected the trends and choices of a bygone era. The walls were likely a stark contrast, contributing to an overall dated aesthetic.

The Kitchen in 2010: A Glimpse into the Past

Looking back at the kitchen from 2010, with its older cabinets and different wall treatment, highlights just how much a fresh coat of paint and meticulous wall preparation can alter the entire atmosphere of a room. The updated walls now provide a clean, modern backdrop that instantly elevates the space. While this major phase is complete, the nature of home improvement means there’s always more on the horizon. Our upcoming projects include: adding elegant window treatments to frame the light, installing crown molding for architectural detail, updating the tops of the cabinets with custom molding, replacing cabinet hardware for a polished look, and of course, decorating for the festive Christmas season. Despite these remaining tasks, the immense satisfaction of achieving perfectly smooth walls after weeks of battling stubborn surfaces is truly rewarding.

The Perfect Hue: Introducing “Cold Steel” by Olympic Paint

Choosing the right paint color is paramount to setting the desired mood in any room. For our kitchen, we opted for a sophisticated shade called “Cold Steel” by Olympic. To achieve a softer, airier feel that complements the natural light in the space, we had it mixed at a 50% tint. This slight adjustment dramatically lightens the color while retaining its inherent cool, calming undertones.

A surprising discovery during this process was the flexibility offered by major retailers like Lowe’s and Home Depot. I had always assumed that requesting specific tint percentages was a service reserved for pricier, specialized paint stores. It was a pleasant surprise to learn that these big box stores also accommodate such requests, making custom color matching much more accessible to the average DIYer. This knowledge empowers homeowners to fine-tune their color choices without breaking the bank.

The Nuances of Color and Light

This particular shade of “Cold Steel” first caught my eye during a partnership with Olympic paint when I was selecting a color for the dining room. What’s fascinating about colors like this is how they interact with light. For instance, Jacque & Matt from The DIY Village used the same color (at 100% tint) in their bathroom, and while it’s undeniably the same shade, the presence of various blue and green pigments means it can appear quite different depending on the ambient light in a room. This phenomenon underscores the importance of testing paint samples on your walls before committing to a full purchase, as natural and artificial light sources can dramatically alter a color’s perception.

Our decision to use Olympic paint again, beyond just the color, was driven by their impressive finish quality. As someone constantly curious about different paint brands and their performance, I pay close attention to details that might seem insignificant to others. The durability, smoothness, and ease of application of Olympic paint have consistently impressed me, making it a go-to choice for significant projects like this kitchen transformation.

Conquering “Flashing”: An Experiment in Paint Performance

One common challenge encountered when painting over freshly skim-coated walls or patch jobs on drywall is a phenomenon known as “flashing.” This term describes a lack of uniformity in the paint’s sheen, where certain areas – typically thicker spots of joint compound – absorb the paint differently, resulting in duller patches. Traditionally, the solution involves applying a dedicated primer coat to ensure a consistent, non-porous surface before painting. I’ve often relied on a Glidden primer followed by paint to effectively counteract this issue.

However, for this project, I decided to conduct a little experiment. Knowing I would be applying two coats of paint regardless, I opted to skip the additional primer step before the first coat, gambling to see how much flashing would occur. To my genuine surprise, while there was some noticeable flashing after the initial coat, the second coat of Olympic paint completely eradicated it. The final finish was perfectly uniform, smooth, and vibrant, achieving a level of consistency I wouldn’t typically expect from paint without an extra primer layer.

I understand that most people might not delve into such minutiae when choosing paint. However, a core aspect of this blog has always been about curiosity-driven product testing and sharing authentic results. I’ve noticed many brands, like Behr’s Marquee line, make bold claims about single-coat coverage, even over challenging surfaces. My personal experience with such claims has often led to disappointment. This experiment with Olympic paint was my way of independently verifying performance, and I’m genuinely impressed by its ability to deliver a uniform finish in two coats without an intermediate primer for flashing issues. This isn’t a sponsored endorsement; it’s simply a candid comparison shopping result, shared in hopes that it helps you make informed decisions for your next paint project.

The Final Countdown: Adding the Polished Finishing Touches

With the major painting work behind us, our focus now shifts to the critical “finishing touches” – the small yet impactful details that truly elevate a space from good to exceptional. These steps are essential for a professional and cohesive look.

Newly painted kitchen walls, showing areas where baseboards and outlets still need attention.

Our list of immediate tasks includes:

  • Painting the Baseboards: Ensuring clean, crisp lines where the walls meet the floor adds a refined edge to the room.
  • Caulk Touch-ups: Meticulously going over any areas where caulk was applied, ensuring smooth seams and a flawless finish around trim and fixtures.
  • Switching Out Old Outlets: Upgrading outdated, discolored outlets and switch plates not only improves aesthetics but can also enhance safety and functionality.
  • Raising the Curtain Rod: A simple trick to make windows appear larger and ceilings taller, raising the curtain rod for the sliding glass door will maximize light and visual space.

Each of these seemingly minor details plays a significant role in creating a polished, professionally finished kitchen that feels truly complete.

A Bright Idea, Dimmmed: The Light Fixture Dilemma

One of the elements I was most excited about for the kitchen was a new light fixture. I had purchased it a considerable time ago, envisioning it as the perfect accent for the newly renovated space, assuming, of course, that the renovation would be completed much sooner than it was (a common miscalculation in DIY!). However, with the passage of time and an evolving design aesthetic, I’m no longer entirely thrilled with my original choice.

It’s not bad… but it’s not great, either. The current light fixture.

The fixture itself isn’t objectively “bad,” but it doesn’t quite evoke the excitement or vision I now have for the space. I’ve considered various solutions, such as removing the bottom silver component, which is one of the main aspects I dislike. However, with the boundless inspiration available online – thanks, internets, for making window shopping so effortlessly addictive! – I’m now contemplating an entirely different lighting concept. This search for the perfect fixture, along with other exciting plans for the kitchen, will be topics we’ll explore in more detail very soon. Stay tuned for more design decisions and updates as this kitchen transformation continues to unfold!
