Unveiling the Ugly Duckling: Our Primary Bathroom Renovation Journey Begins
When we first stepped into this house, my imagination soared with visions of transformation. Yet, my practical foresight didn’t quite extend to meticulously documenting every “before” angle for a public blog. My initial thought was simple: a few Facebook albums for friends to follow our remodeling adventures. It wasn’t until a dear friend, noticing my incessant chatter about house projects, gently nudged me to share my obsession online. And thus, The Ugly Duckling House blog was born last April. This, unfortunately, means that the truly raw, unfiltered “before” state of our primary bathroom exists mostly in the grainy listing photos and a handful of hurried, late-evening snapshots taken from less-than-ideal angles. These initial images are a testament to the journey ahead, a stark reminder of where we started.

The Grand Revelation: Our Primary Bathroom’s “Before” State
With a fresh new year upon us, and having finally conquered the mysterious world of blog comments (victory!), I’ve made a crucial New Year’s resolution: to capture truly comprehensive “before” pictures for every new project. This commitment explains the upcoming deluge of primary bathroom photos you’re about to witness. My goal is to meticulously document every grubby corner, every unflattering perspective, ensuring that when the “after” finally arrives, it will truly P-O-P with undeniable contrast. We’re not holding back on the reality of this space.
That’s the hopeful idea, at least. Otherwise, I’m merely embarrassing myself with a veritable gallery of my less-than-pristine bathroom. But honesty is key to any renovation journey, especially when you’re dealing with an “ugly duckling” space.

As I shared with you yesterday, the initial stages of clearing out the bathroom have already commenced. The first step in any major renovation is always the decluttering and removal of existing elements, creating a blank canvas for the transformation to begin. This phase, while seemingly simple, is essential for truly understanding the space and preparing for the work ahead.
Strategic Choices for a Budget-Friendly Transformation
The Vanity & Tile: A Foundation to Build Upon

Our plan for this primary bathroom remodel is a blend of practicality and aesthetics, focusing heavily on budget-conscious DIY solutions. The existing vanity, while dark and dated, is structurally sound. Instead of a complete tear-out and replacement, which would significantly increase costs, we’ve decided to paint these cabinets. The chosen color will perfectly complement the beige-gray builder’s tile that, inexplicably, I absolutely adore. This tile provides a neutral yet warm base, and by lightening up the cabinet base to match, our tiny bathroom will hopefully feel significantly larger and more open.
Keeping both the vanity and the floor tile is a major financial win, freeing up precious funds that can be allocated to upgrades in other, more critical areas of the house. Moreover, painting this vanity offers an invaluable bonus: it’s a fantastic trial run. I’m viewing this as a dress rehearsal for the much larger and more daunting project of painting our kitchen cabinets. Any lessons learned, any mistakes made here, will undoubtedly contribute to a smoother process in the kitchen. It’s a strategic step in our DIY journey.

Upgrading the Sink & Countertop for Modern Functionality
Adjacent to the vanity is our current sink – a rather nasty, outdated fixture that is high on the replacement list. I cannot wait to swap it out for a pre-fabricated top from Home Depot or Lowe’s. My ideal choice would feature a sink basin built directly into the countertop. This integrated design would not only provide a nice, sleek, and contemporary look but also offer superior functionality and ease of cleaning. It’s about combining practical benefits with a style that truly reflects my taste, moving away from the builder-grade standard.

A Splash of Style: The New Shower Curtain
One of the few newer updates since I last posted about our broken towel bar is a fantastic shower curtain I picked up from Target a few months ago. It’s a beautiful blend of two distinct grays: one with a cool, blue undertone, and another that perfectly matches the beige-gray of our existing shower tile. This seemingly small detail plays a significant role in tying together the room’s color palette, adding a touch of design cohesion even amidst the chaos of renovation.

What truly elevates this shower curtain are the subtle sunburst patterns, each imbued with a slight bit of iridescence. This delicate shimmer adds an unexpected layer of texture and visual interest, catching the light beautifully without being overtly flashy. It’s a detail that brings a smile to my face and hints at the refined style we’re aiming for in the finished space. Me likey, indeed!

Navigating the Challenges of a Tiny Primary Bathroom
To truly grasp the scale of this project and the challenges we face, I’ve resorted to some rather unconventional photography techniques – yes, I literally stood on the vanity to get these “aerial” shots! This unique perspective, however, is the best way to illustrate just how little space we’re working with in this primary bathroom. Every single inch of wall space will need to be thoughtfully utilized to maximize both storage and visual appeal without overwhelming the compact footprint. Designing a small bathroom demands creativity and smart solutions.

Dated Fixtures and Storage Dilemmas
The Enduring (and Ailing) Medicine Cabinet
This medicine cabinet is a true heirloom, having followed us from our old apartment. I acquired it ages ago from Bed Bath & Beyond, (with a 20% off coupon, naturally!), but it hasn’t exactly weathered the years gracefully. The prominent rings on its top surface are a souvenir from the heat of countless tealights I used during those bygone days when a spa-like bath was a regular luxury, not a distant dream. The only way to temporarily conceal them now is, ironically, to place new tealights directly over them – a truly vicious cycle of cover-ups.

The cabinet’s worn-to-pieces aesthetic is also largely thanks to the persistent humidity in every bathroom it has ever resided in. The constant moisture has created a rather authentic “chippy paint” effect. While this distressed look might be considered en vogue for certain pieces of furniture, the fact that it’s not faux is a genuine concern. I constantly worry about the cabinet doors warping or succumbing to further deterioration due to the moisture, which would compromise its functionality entirely.

Despite its flaws, the cabinet’s shelves provide essential storage space for all my bath products – another collection inherited from my spa-bath days. Should I decide to part ways with this beloved but ailing piece, finding an alternative, equally efficient storage solution for all my indulgent treats will become a top priority. In a small bathroom, every storage opportunity is precious.

Confronting the “French Country Psychedelic” Nightmare
Ugh – that light fixture! It’s another relic of the past, having originally boasted two globes that were so grimy my mother, in a well-intentioned but ill-timed act of kindness, decided to scrub them clean. I truly wish she’d consulted me beforehand because, honestly, I am so utterly ready for this entire fixture to be gone that I haven’t even bothered to dignify this “thing” by putting the globes back on. Apologies, Mom!
Conveniently, this shot also offers an excellent view of the truly hideous wallpaper I am subjected to every single day while brushing my teeth. I’m at a loss to even describe its style… “French Country Psychedelic” comes to mind, but even that feels too generous. Don’t stare at it too long, I warn you, or the little flowers might just start moving around on their own. It’s a dizzying, dated pattern that demands to be replaced.

Looking Ahead: The Promise of an “After”
So, there you have it: a comprehensive, unvarnished tour of every too-tight corner and dated detail of our tiny primary bathroom. It’s now officially posted for your viewing pleasure – or perhaps, your viewing horror, depending on your tolerance for 70s-era design. This unflinching look at our starting point is crucial. It sets the stage for what promises to be a dramatic and deeply satisfying transformation, turning this “ugly duckling” into a functional, beautiful, and modern space.
This renovation is more than just an aesthetic upgrade; it’s a testament to the power of DIY, budget-friendly solutions, and the joy of slowly but surely turning a house into a home. We’ll be sharing every step, every challenge, and every triumph along the way. Your insights and encouragement mean the world as we embark on this exciting chapter. Let ‘er rip, folks! I know she has it coming, and I can’t wait to share the “after” with all of you.
